Why isn't the inflexibility of the "walrus" crowd's apparent belief that improbable things simply cannot happen at least equally worth noting? Why have they never considered that they might be wrong about their beliefs?

dropped the walrus vs fairy question on a group of psychologists today and not only did the majority agree the walrus would be more surprising, the one with the strongest background in research responded to the ‘but fairies aren’t real’ argument with “are your beliefs so inflexible that you’ve never considered you might be wrong about what’s real and what’s not?” and honestly i haven’t recovered

#i still can't get over how everyone's like 'but it couldn't have got there without help!' OK I guess it had that then #yes sorry I'm going to be continue to be more shocked by discovering the supernatural exists #than that humans will sometimes conspire to do weird and difficult things -- such as get a walrus somewhere it shouldn't be #like people saying the fairy is no weirder than finding out tectonic plates exist YES IT IS #why is the walrus weirder than hearing about another monolith appeared in Wales (obviously humans did a thing)#it's people! if something weird that couldn't happen without human involvement then. CLEARLY: HUMAN INVOLVEMENT #it's a PR stunt! It's a TV prank show! It's some kind of unethical performance art!#ofc I would still be very startled but I would assume my life would probably go back to normal once I found out what was going on #if fairy: then nothing ever the same again!
