do you ever. Can’t figure out which translation to read. So you say fuck it. French time.
#honestly it feels like an inconvenience but everyone is like wow that’s kinda a flex#and I’m like. listen. I could read this book so much faster if I read it in English#but alas I wanted the more period language and place details while keeping the lesbians#I’m reading count of Monte cristo#I was reading the English project Gutenberg translation but some people on Reddit were talking about it might be slightly abridged#and the robin buss translation is easier to read bc it’s more modern language. but she cuts out some little details that I like to have#like one guy quoted the beginning where she says ‘the watchtower’ rather than ‘notre dame de la garde’ and like#I like that flavor! give me the flavor!#but she doesn’t censor the lesbians!#so here I am translating words that I don’t know like ‘wick’ and ‘gloomy’ constantly bc I decided to read in FRENCH like a PRETENTIOUS BITC#but also none of the English versions mentioned that this one lady has thin lips so#worth it to hear dumas call her a thin lipped bitch#also learning that his grandmother was a slave and he was black and then reading this is like. damn the main characters are super black#why are there all these white guys in the adaptation#(I know why)
