Inuit and speculation of hidden community aside, there were absolutely saami in norway outside of finnmark. This map is by Hans Ragnar Mathisen who used a ton of historical documents and resources to create this map of sΓ‘pmi/sameland.
Been thinking bout how if a fandom is obscure on here, then people in that fandom tend not to post ab it bc "no one else would get it". Like, obscurity breeds obscurity ig, so there are prolly more fans of stuff out there than we can know. Actually new idea for this post: every time you see this post, make a quick post ab your least known fandom/interest
#like maybe the inuit thing came from the saami who went to alaska during the famine?#just in reverse? idk#the last research i did on the black death was like 20 years ago i am certain there have been changes#research is complicated when you have places that changed names because of plague or absorption into a different place#or your kommune got eaten by sweden or the dialect and language changed etc#but there are saami place names as far south as fuckin more og romsdal#which isn't even technically northern norway#it is the northernmost kommune in western norway#whether going further southward would have been desirable is another question#like there is absolutely debate about whether the southern saami population was there since the iron age or whether they expanded in#either the viking age or the 15-1600s#and whether they were there in the iron age then either died off or left and then came back in the 1500s#and some of the latter is suggested by the population reduction from svartedauden but there is also arguments there based from middens and#from lack of writings that support that#there is definitely a gap#but to say that nobody is studying it isn't right either
