Ok my 2 cents on a certain phenomenon on tumblr dot com that I’m rewriting on now that my anger has dissipated
I won’t get into the importance of blocking, reblogs, commenting and whatnot there are plenty of posts short and long regarding this matter. I do want to talk about is how some people follow “content creators” solely for the content and unfollow once said content has decreased or they make personal posts
Look the internet is your space to cultivate for yourself but if you’re following someone who writes, draws, animates, makes gifs etc on the website known for being a in-real-time-diary in the guise of blogging— you have no right to be upset about them posting anything other than “content”. There is something inherently about seeing certain blogs as content creators that implicate you’re dehumanizing them. Seeing them as these machines who spit out fics and art and whatnot for you. And thus comes the illogical reactions or unfollows, hate asks etc once they post anything that isn’t content
There is something called basic decency. Not everyone can emphasize with a snap of fingers, I would know. But it’s not hard to teach yourself how to emphasize and put yourself in others shoes- or idk… simply respect someone for being human, just like you are. You don’t need to know what goes in a persons life to show them respect, treat them with kindness and decency- because again, it’s called basic decency for exactly that. Just as it is every humans right to be fed, housed, to live for simply being human- regardless of their personality, views, their way of talking and acting.
Creators here are not entitled to explain to you in great detail why they haven’t drawn art on a daily basis recently or why they haven’t finished that one fic they started a month ago. Nobody owes anyone an explanation and even if they did, you don’t get to judge. Everyone has their own hardships, what only stings someone can kill another- that’s what life is! Being human is! Everyone has their own experiences, despite our core similarities and essence, we are all unique on our own. There’s no need for misery Olympics or forcing someone to talk about topics that make them distressed
So again, sure, it’s up to you how you create your own online space but if you’re harassing someone or unfollowing for their content- or lack of it, for switching to a fandom or character you don’t care for, for suddenly going silent or a shift in their entire blog; you’re a coward and a killjoy and it’s as simple as that. Sometimes you guys need to grow up and not push people- respect them as they’d to you for the sake of it, no malice or interior motives. It costs you 0 to be kind and it’s as simple as it is. You don’t like something? Ok sure just block and go on maybe but also if you’re mad about people yapping on the yappler website it’s on u man just so u know
Once fandom spaces and works creators put out stop being treated as “products to be consumed” and appreciated as forms of art as they literally are (again: writing, drawing, music…), I believe we will heal and reach a better place as a whole in fandoms and on the internet. It starts with you and evolves as a community, so stop being a killjoy and be kind to people and to yourselves.
