ok listen i know rise of the guardians is a pretty quiet fandom at least on here but i need to put all my thoughts together like just get them out bc i cant start a new wip now and i just. need to scream.
im still just like sitting here thinking of what a TERRIFIC character pitch black is. like when you look at his story and his past and like his motivations its just.
you have this man, kozmotis, who loved his family and his daughter so much that when fearlings in the prison began to mimic her he couldn’t fight them off anymore and went in to save her from he thought she was being held. and like from that he basically became possessed by these fearlings that more or less used him as a type of puppet king. so then you have this totally unwilling transformation into something that was quite literally the antithesis of what he wanted to be.
and then you’ve got like the ptich black we see in the movie who’s fully the boogeyman. but here’s the thing. the boogeyman exists in most cultures to indirectly protect children. “don’t get out of bed or the boogeyman will get you” is basically getting a wound up child to stay in bed so they fall asleep at bedtime. “don’t go into the woods or the boogeyman will get you” is a way to keep kids from wandering off and getting lost, or running into predators. this is basically consistent over the majority of cultures.
so the fear. the fear doesn’t always have something baseless. kids who are scared of snakes won’t get bit one, probably. kids who are scared of wasps won’t be around one long enough to get stung. a little fear is HEALTHY. for example, i am afraid of sky-diving, bc of the possibility the parachute might not work. so i will not do something dangerous like leap out a plane for fun, thus eliminating that possibility of harm.
fear’s are also important bc the more you face them, the more you can grow. like public speaking, if you’re afraid the only way to overcome it is by doing it. that’s courage, which is not the absence of fear but rather ‘being afraid and doing it anyway.’
now, does he have a sadistic streak? yeah, he’s a being who feeds off of fear. fear can be cultivated like any emotion, but nightmares aren’t gonna hurt you. you have them, you get scared, and you wake up, same as a good dream. it’s not a fun experience, but unless you’re really suffering from something like sleep paralysis or PTSD, its something that passes. was his goal good or anything? not really. but can you really blame the guy for wanting belief thats a core part of his existence?
fear has its purpose and frankly i think if more of that was focused on pitch really wouldn’t be like a bad guy. like the movie pitch clearly isn’t like a mindless fearling bot, he’s just a guy who i think is trying to make his best way amidst people who don’t want him to be around.
