One thing I find interesting about severance in the tv show is how unpopular the process is. In most "Don't Create the Torment Nexus" type stories the general public is on board with the torment nexus, or else unaware of what exactly the torment nexus is. But in the Severance tv show, the concept of severance is Very unpopular, with most of the public becoming hostile or shocked when finding out that the main cast has undergone severance. So, why does severance exist? I do not think it is a coincidence that of each of the revealed backstories we get a man who is drowning in grief for his dead wife, a man who has constantly failed to find a job and support his family, and a woman who is trying to save her family's exploitative company. Lumon exists through preying on vulnerable people and exploiting them, and through the rich and powerful being fine with exploiting others for their benefit. I think that rather than a story that's just "Don't Create the Torment Nexus (idiot)", we are getting one that more explicitly says the "torment nexus" is just injustices are the endpoint of exploitation inherent to our society, and if we want to stop these grave injustices from popping up, we need to create a society that protects its vulnerable and is not built on exploitation.
#severance#severance spoilers#idk i hope we get to see more of the outside world and how severance interacts with everyday life and non-severed business#severance analysis#also#obviously “don't create the torment nexus” media is a criticism of the current societies injustices through a hypothetical endpoint#but most of the time it is very 1 to 1#like in the handmaids tale book sexism leads to essentially slavery of women#or in 1984 where a need to keep power leads to a whole world controlled by three fascist governments#but Severance tv show seems to be leaning towards more of a “no one is free until everyone is free type message#i mean they have brought up grief and racism along with capitalistic abuses#and i wouldnt be surprised if homophobia#sexism#or the us military got more of a spotlight next#and all these people that hate severance and yet still seemingly support the capitalistic society that lead to it#you dont have to be propagandized into loving an injustice to support it#and leaving any group vulnerable can lead to exploitation popping up in a seemingly unrelated area of society#like mark's grief leading to capitalistic exploitation#because everything is connected#ok im done yapping
