FAVORITE SHOWS IN POSTERS

Well, we’re back for another installment of this tagged meme, this time for TV shows! I also stole this from/was indirectly tagged by @jcmorrigan. My taste in shows also differs a bit from my taste in movies, as I tend to like a lot of comedy shows with not as many horror ones. I’m not into shows as much as movies overall, but there are some that I am very passionate about so I picked twenty again. So, here we go for part 2, in order:

1. Avatar: The Last Airbender/The Legend Of Korra (2005-2014)

I'm including these as one show since they take place in the same universe and tell a continuation of the same overall plot. Altogether this is probably the best piece of media to ever exist, including movies. It has so many great characters and villains especially and some of the most epic sequences, charming humor and heartwarming moments ever. I've never met a person who didn't like these shows, even people who normally don't like cartoons. My dad, who is biased against animation? He loved it. My mother? She loved it, watched it with her multiple times. My grandmother? Loved it. My ex-boyfriend? Loved it. My best friend? Loved it. I dare anyone not to, and I'm so glad it's making a resurgence since it's on Netflix for a new generation to enjoy.

2. Black Butler (2008-2014)

I never was big into anime growing up and only really started watching anime when I was like 16 and above, but this is one of the exceptions because holy shit is it ever dark and epic. I'm not sure I'd really recommend it for kids, it's more of a teens and young adults kind of anime and that's probably why it's so good, because it isn't afraid to explore dark and mature topics and do it with all of the intensity and gravitas required to do said topics justice. It has lots of great characters, and the story of demons who make deals with children who have a dark side is fun to watch play out.

3. Seinfeld (1989-1998)

My dad was a huge fan of this show so I watched it growing up since I was a toddler and it became a classic for me. I've watched thw hole show through at least 8 times, and I'll never stop because it never gets old or boring. It's also my only comfort show when I'm having a panic attack because of one time a few years ago when I was having a drug-induced psychosis episode and watching it calmed me down, so now it's like the opposite of a trigger and whenever I'm having an episode or something I watch it to bring me back to reality. For that reason it's more than a show to me, it's a medical treatment and I'm forever grateful to it.

4. The Good Place (2016-2020)

The big four shows made my Michael Schur all made it on this post (The Good Place, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Office and Parks And Recreation), either in the main list of the honorable mentions, but this is my personal favorite of the four. It's so funny, quirky, relatable and basically tailor-made to suit my interests. Not only is it an entertaining and wholesome show, but I think watching it helped me come to terms with a lot of things like mortality, ethics, philosophy, religion and my relationships with other people. It gets alot of different viewpoints across and if you're a very analytical and philosophical person like me you'll probably enjoy seeing it all play out. Not to mention, every single character is 'favorite character' material. It's rare you find a show with no filler characters in the main cast, but I genuinely can't choose who is best.

5. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-?)

Another of Michael Schur's shows, this one is just barely under The Good Place and to be honest it was tough to pick my favorite between the two because they're both equally funny. I know it's kind of controversial right now because of the whole law enforcement thing, but I actually think they do a good job of handling social issues in the show and remaining respectful of real-life systemic problems. As for the characters, this is another one of those shows where every single character is gold and I think that tends to be a trend among Schur's shows in general. He produces damn good comedy, and damn good characters. I can't wait to see what they bring next.

6. Rick And Morty (2013-?)

This is unfortunately one of those cases of 'great show, horrible fandom' and for that reason I don't get involved in the fandom even though I love the show. It's a shame because it really is a great show, so funny and, again, such good characters. I think it's a lot more accessible than the fandom likes to claim, so I'm hoping more people will give it a chance and not get put off by the intellectual elitism of the fandom because it does have some of the most entertaining and batshit crazy episodes ever, poking fun of some of the staples of science fiction in media while also poking fun of itself the whole time. Unlike the fandom, the show doesn't take itself seriously and that's enjoyable nowadays.

7. Orange Is The New Black (2013-2019)

While this show is a comedy, it is also a lot of other things and it's probably made me ugly-cry just as many times as it's made me laugh. Well, maybe not as often, but those few scenes (if you've watched the show then you know the ones I'm talking about) made me hysterically sob hard enough to be worth like fifty minor sads. But I didn't even mind because the show is just that good, and it makes you /feel/ something in a real way. Probably because of just how real it gets in terms of telling stories that happen all the time in the real world, sometimes with inevitably tragic endings. But these things do happen every day, and it's important to shine a light on that. It's not just representation for LGBTQ+ but also for POC, the neurodiverse, the poor, and many more. Give it a watch to broaden your perspective!

8. Big Mouth (2017-?)

This is probably the grossest show I've ever seen but by god is it ever funny. Maybe it's because I have an immature sense of humor or something, but I love this show. It definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea and I don't recommend you watch this show with anyone else around because it will get awkward. I think part of its appeal to me is that everyone I talk to who likes it considers it so relatable to their lives growing up but for someone like me who grew up on the autism and asexual spectrum and who was physically an early-bloomer by years, nothing about this show is relatable to me in any way so it makes it all the more crazy and bizarre watching how the people around me must have experienced things. Did y'all really have these experiences with puberty in middle school???

9. Dexter (2006-2013)

I recently heard that this show is coming back for a reboot soon and I'm so excited because this is my absolute favorite drama/thriller show, as evidenced by the fact that it's the highest one on the list so far that isn't a comedy. I love the idea of having a protagonist who is sort of a villain (or at least morally dubious), and the idea of a serial killer who only kills bad people is particularly satisfying for some reason. Maybe because he's the vigilante we all deserve and want in this unjust and evil world of modern times? Idk but the very premise of this show set it up for big things and aside from the ending I think it delivered consistently.

10. Once Upon A Time (2011-2018)

This show took us on some journeys, and you can't deny that. Sure, maybe it didn't always finish what it started and didn't always end in the most satisfying way, but part of its charm is that you didn't care because the experience was just so much fun. They took characters and stories that have been told to death and somehow managed to put a unique and unexpected twist on them, and that alone is admirable. Good twists, good villains, and pretty much every cliffhanger known to man will keep you hooked on binge-watching every episode.

11. RuPaul's Drag Race (2009-?)

A bit different than the other entries on my list in that it's not fiction but a reality competition show, but I couldn't leave Drag Race out because it's just so fucking iconic and perfect. Even when you disagree with the judges or can't stand a certain contestant you'll still be having a good time. It's got the personalities you love to love, the ones you love to hate, and the comedy that's completely meme-able. I mean just how much has this show contributed to pop culture and the internet? More than most of us, henny. I've watched every single season, even the international ones and all of the spinoffs. This show will probably be on for another thirty years when Ru is throwing shade from a hospital bed and I'll still be watching.

12. House (2004-2012)

Some people hate on this show, and I don't get it. I love House. Yes, he's an ass. That's the point. He's supposed to be unlikeable, and that's why I like him. Maybe because I always love the rude, sarcastic, misanthropic jerkass-genius characters for some reason. And I also love procedural shows, so it's a win-win. I also work in the healthcare field so it appeals to me for that reason too, because obviously the whole premise is outlandish which is what makes it funny. Of course it's not realistic for a hospital, so just enjoy the absurdity and don't get too hung up on the details of medical accuracy and professional ethics and you'll be fine.

13. The Office (2005-2013)

The third of Michael Schur's show and the last one that made the main list (sorry Parks And Rec, I love you too but there was just so many good shows to choose from and I saw you last so the nostalgia isn't as strong!) I don't think I need to hype this show up any, it's already a classic and you can't even turn around online without getting hit in the face by a dozen Office memes. You'll have to pry this show and it's relatable characters (especially Michael Scott) from my cold, dead hands.

14. All Hail King Julien/The Penguins Of Madagascar (2008-2017)

Like Avatar/Korra, I also consider this as one show for the sake of this list because it also takes place in the same universe (Madagascar, specifically) and I just couldn't choose one over the other because they're both so perfect. They're funny and I love all the characters (it cut out the weaker links of the Madagascar film series and just focuses on expanding the standout side-characters like King Julien and the penguins). It also delved into some lore, particularly the first show, and even though I didn't also agree with the directions it took (you may have seen me get salty about the ending because I cared too much), I can't deny how much I love it.

15. Bones (2005-2017)

One of the other scarce non-comedy shows on this list, it still has it's funny moments. It's also, like House, another procedural show that involves some medical stuff, but this time on a more scientific and forensic level which is even more interesting. It's nice to see a lead female with Asperger's, too. There's a lot of cop/law enforcement shows where they try to solve crimes, but this one is the best, and I'm saying that as a fan of CSI as well. Don't fight me on this, I'm right. Oh yes, it's corny, it's campy, it's cheesy, but I love every minute of it. Don't watch if you have a weak stomach though.

16. The Simpsons (1989-?)

We all grew up with this show, don't lie. It's been around longer than most people on tumblr have even been alive. Should it have ended seasons ago? Hell yes. But that doesn't take away what the first like 20 or so seasons gave us (there's a lot of argument about when the show jumped the shark, for me it wasn't until much later than the popular consensus). The characters are amazing, but the secret to the show's longevity is that they always return to status quo and there's comfort and nostalgia in that. Bart will still be in 4th grade when you're out there pushing 90. This show is persistent. This show is eternal. This show will outlive us all.

17. Ash Vs. Evil Dead (2015-2018)

Sorely underrated. This show is hilarious, gruesome and campy as hell and I love it. I don't think you necessarily have to watch the Evil Dead movies beforehand in order to get the plot of the show, although it would probably help. In my opinion this show ended way too soon and I'm hoping someday we'll get a comeback because Ash is the reluctant, self-absorbed hero we all need and it's 2020 so at this point there really might actually be a demon-zombie apocalypse and who's gonna save us then if not for the impulsive womanizer with a chainsaw for a hand?

18. Malcolm In The Middle (2000-2006)

Another show I grew up with, I don't think it gets as much credit as it deserves. It has some damn funny episodes and great characters, and it did a lot of the popular sitcom tropes before they were 'cool'. Some other great sitcoms, The Middle in particular, took a lot of influence from this show and it helped pave the way for the future of sitcoms at a time when they were about to make a comeback. If you want a good show about the real experiences of growing up, this is a much more accurate representation of the highs and lows of being an awkward tween from a dysfunctional home.

19. A Series Of Unfortunate Events (2017-2019)

Unlike most people I actually liked the movie version from the early 2000's, and I read the books growing up so I was excited when I saw there was a live action television adaptation of it on Netflix because I felt like they cancelled the movie franchise too soon. I was interested to see how new actors would handle the roles, and I was not disappointed. I wouldn't say I liked either portrayal of the characters better or worse, they both added their own twist to it and this show is a great and loyal adaptation to the books, probably because the author was so heavily involved. He knew just when to stick to the books and when to improve upon what he had done with the benefit of hindsight. This show is basically the books, but remastered.

20. Winx Club (2004-?)

Sort of an odd one out on this list, but I really love this show even as an adult and it may surprise you to learn it is still going on and the most recent season came out last year. They take big breaks sometimes in between seasons, but it's still going strong and in multiple countries. The only thing I don't like about watching this show is all the different and inconsistent dubs since the original show is Italian and each dub only goes for a couple seasons so by the time you get used to one set of voices/names for the characters oyu have to abruptly switch to another, but it's still worth it for the beautiful animation and cool characters (especially the villains!)

(ignoring all the other juicy Deltarune 2 stuff to shove Chara Talks into it lololol)

I haven’t been super active on this blog because frankly I have like, three? looong analysis/theorycrafting posts I’ve been putting off working on and it fills me with shame to log in and see them waiting in my drafts.

But.

With the release of Deltarune Chapter 2, I wanted to talk kinda in general about how I thought it could impact the fandom’s perception of Everybody’s Favorite Demon Baby, and also point out something in specific about the Weird Route that might connect back to Undertale.

Putting it under the cut to avoid spoilers and long-winded ramblings for the unwilling. Includes spoilers for the Weird Route.

(NOTE: may update later if I notice more things for to put in section II. I’d like to make a full list of parallels if I can tidy them up.)

I. Pre- vs Post-Release Thoughts (you can skip down to II if you don’t care, it is genuinely Long and Pointless)

Okay, so first off. I got SO worried like, the day before the new chapter dropped? It hit me that whatever new stuff we got out of this, people would connect back to Undertale, and. Honestly, I really do hate connecting everything back to Chara, because I do think of Kris as their own character and I really like them and don’t want to ignore everything they got going on. But, I am first and foremost a shameless Chara stan and they’re very important to me, so I kinda... did spend a few minutes reeling from all the new DR stuff as its own stuff, and then immediately started thinking about how this would reflect back on Chara in Undertale lol.

But that’s ok for me to do here because this is my All Chara, Only Chara, All The Time blog, so I am gonna only really talk about Deltarune here to talk about them lol.

So yeah, I started getting anxious beforehand worrying about how everyone would take any and all implications and apply it to mean “aha, Chara IS evil!” The fakeout with the pie reveal in the anniversary stream was a big relief, but I still got worried leading up to the release about what could be in it.

Because part of why I’ve always thought that “Chara was genuinely evil from the start” and even “ok maybe not TOTALLY evil, but Chara was still a kinda bad person” were unlikely was, even if you throw out all the other popular Chara-sympathetic theories. To me, both these takes just seemed too below TF’s talent and the way he wrote all his other characters with depth and love; a Chara like the one these theories propose just doesn’t belong in a world created by TF, and the way the Dreemurrs talk about them overall, the way TF made a point of having Chara say they were guided and repeatedly, correctly blame you the player for the destruction in Kill-All, I was sure that he never intended them to ever be as bad as the fandom sometimes tried to make them out to be.

... Like, mostly sure. Like, 80% sure? Because he never ever talks about them, so it’s impossible say for sure, and it is still theoretically possible that “Chara was and is bad” was the cold-ass take he’d intended all along. So yeah, leading up to the release, I started getting antsy that whatever new lore came out of it, either he’d directly confirm “Chara was a villain?” “*cocks gun* Always has been” or there’d be something that’d at least heavily implicate them, or could be twisted to implicate them, as a negative force. More ammo to be used against them in the Chara Debate Circles would be a drag, and outright confirmation of them as a villain would honestly break my heart and I’d be forced to disown Toby Fox, My Beloved Cool Dad.

And, right now? Tell the truth, I’m SO relieved and I am SO happy. And not just because of how much depth and characterization it seems Kris is getting! (imo, because rn I just headcanon them as an unhappy teen desperately trying to keep their new friends going on adventures with them and trying to fight back against the player’s control)

I love how this chapter seems to be TF doing course-correcting based on fandom interpretations. Because Kris just isn’t evil, even if they are a knife teen, even if they are the Knight, they’re just NOT evil and that’s canon, baybeeee; it’s made clear in this chapter and the previous one that they love their family even outside of the player’s control, they care about their new friends even outside of the player’s control, they’re established as a weird creepy kid but no one sees them as scary or evil, they’re just Kris, and even in the Weird Route, TF made a point of hammering in the differences between Kris and the player in the Weird Route: Susie and Ralsei notice how distressed Kris seemed after you have Noelle ice Berdly, Noelle heard a voice that she said wasn’t Kris telling her to kill, and the FUCKING Spamton fight: “Kris called for help... but nobody came” again and again, and then “You whispered Noelle’s name”... you, not Kris.

I know TF has never commented much on fans’ perceptions of Frisk and Chara, or who exactly is pulling strings in different routes. But after all this, and especially after seeing all the little winks and nods to fandom jokes in this chapter (what comes to mind: pulling everyone’s leg by seeming to have Kris attack Toriel with a knife only to reveal that pie theory was right, Susie not liking Ralsei’s real face as much as his shadowed one, Ralsei with a gun getting referenced with the ad, Kris getting a joke fixation with knives after the fans made Chara and Kris have knife obsessions as a joke), and seeing what looks like him try to correct some things (what stuck out to me was doubling down on showing that Kris is loved and valued in their family: lots of fans came away from Chapter 1 thinking that Kris was not valued as much as Asriel, but here we see that Toriel is supportive of Kris’ friendship with Susie, and it’s stated that Asriel is the one who used the crappy controller, not Kris) -

I think while he hasn’t commented directly, while he admitted to being overwhelmed by Undertale’s success, while he tends to be pretty tight-lipped about the lore (whether that’s because it’ll be addressed by future chapters or because he prefers to let fans sleuth it out), this chapter convinced me that Toby does keep tabs on fan reactions in Deltarune, so he probably does with Undertale too and would know about all The Discourse surrounding Little Mx Pink Cheeks (and in turn, popular theories like Narrator Chara... Toby if you integrate Narrator Chara into Deltarune being a borderline creepypasta and have the narrator start talking directly to the characters or to the player or the characters start talking to the narrator I will lose my damn B E A N S).

(Kris and Chara not being demonized and the narrator interacting directly with the characters were the only two things on my wishlist going in, I was fine with literally anything else happening lmao)

I even kinda think he’s going out of his way to separate Kris and the player because we didn’t get it before with Undertale, we still insisted that Frisk or Chara was the one doing it, and he’s even using Kris to show that even if this kid can be scary, maybe even mean, and maybe they’re even the Knight (with their reasons unknown), they’re still not a bad kid, they’re still funny and likable, and they still genuinely love their family and friends - which falls in line with Undertale’s cast of complex but likable people who can be antagonists and make mistakes but still aren’t truly bad people, and imo is a direct response to some people fixating on the idea that Chara was always evil because they seem scary/complicated.

... Which is a long way to say that I came out of Deltarune with my confidence fully restored about TF’s intentions with Chara and Kris. Even if he never comments on Chara directly, now I really don’t think TF thinks they’re evil or ever intended for them to be. Deltarune convinced me more than ever that Chara is meant to be complex, yes, and able to be influenced to do horrible things, but they were never intended to be as malicious or shallow as some fans insist.

TLDR:

Toby Fox read your mean fanfiction where Chara is a bad abusive serial killer no one likes, and he made Deltarune in revenge.

... Hm? Ah, you’d like me to get to the point! Right this way!

II. Undertale, Deltarune, and The Point

While no doubt some will still take the voice Noelle hears to be Chara influencing her to turn her into a murderer (I haven’t gone looking for it yet, but I’m sure it’s already a thing because I know this fandom), since it’s made too clear by the game that they can’t blame Kris for this one, I think at this point that’s just being too stubborn to consider other ideas.

If you believe in the totally made up idea used in so many fanfics that Chara is an evil spirit trying to whisper in Frisk’s ear to kill everyone, literally (for some reason) the embodiment of raising stats, and gets more control over people who have increased LV to take over their body... sure. Could be them, they did talk about moving on to the next world and all. I mean, that wouldn’t really make sense because it’s literally never implied in the actual game that Chara encourages you to kill outside of the Kill-All Run or even wants you to, certainly not as the narrator and we get no hint of them doing this as an unseen, unheard third-party either.

Not to mention they’re NOT literally possessing you because of increased LV; they don’t control you even with high LV in any Undertale route other than arguably the Kill-All, and if you fail the Kill-All and it turns into a high-body count Neutral, Chara suddenly stops using first-person narration and showing up in mirrors entirely even though they were showing themself before, the LV remains the same or even can get raised as high as LV 19, nor do they suddenly take over in any other Neutral runs. We can speculate on why (personally, I’d place this either on Chara’s mindset, such as them sinking into shock from the trauma or becoming more assertive as the player feeds their megalomania, or as a sign of Frisk’s withdrawal, leaving Chara alone in the body to take the reins and act out the player’s orders), but canonically, no, Chara does not take over due to high stats.

In fact, there’s even more evidence against this. First-person narration also exists for fleeing your battles in Undertale, even on Pacifist runs with base stats, 0 EXP, and an LV of 1. Since Chara is established to use first-person narration to refer to themself, is the only one who canonically does so, and is confirmed to be present even in all runs through their name and memories always showing up, it seems pretty likely that Chara can take control to flee battle. That means an increase in stats is not a sign of their presence or control, in Undertale or Deltarune.

The most damning blow to the idea that Chara is the voice corrupting Noelle are the lines in the fight with Spamton I mentioned. Kris called for help, but nobody came. You whispered Noelle’s name. Well hold on. If that’s Chara, shouldn’t it be “I whispered Noelle’s name”? As soon as you’ve officially started the Kill-All in Undertale, Chara starts up their “It’s me, Chara” schtick right away, right there in Toriel’s home in the first area, and if they weren’t the narrator before, they’re beginning to speak through the narration now. If the voice was Chara, surely Toby Fox knows it’d be a way bigger “oh shit” moment if the creepy scary hidden route once again switched into first-person, scaring us the same way he did before when we first saw “It’s me, Chara” and knew something was wrong; unfairly or not, their reputation as a villain is still well established and hinting to Chara’s presence with a simple “I” would drive the menace even further, if he intended for them to simply be a demon that possesses player characters when you grind enough. But it’s still just you. The player.

The Weird Route does even more to help Chara’s case than that. Not only is it made pretty clear that Kris and the player are separate, and the player is the one responsible for corrupting Noelle and making her kill... consider how similar Noelle and Chara are, in the Weird Route and the Kill-All Route.

This “voice” that “guides” them in growing strong, compelling them to kill everyone in order to fight for them, eventually driving them to murder people they know. Chara calls themself “the demon that comes when people call its name”, and you whisper Noelle’s name to have her appear to kill Spamton. Noelle’s conflicting emotions towards Kris and the voice as she is manipulated, as she becomes more violent and sadistic, as she goes into shock; does that not sound like Chara, who flipflops between holding you dear as their partner and wanting to move on to the next world together, to be together forever, and them being disgusted by your refusal to accept consequences and the perverse enjoyment you get in killing everyone again and again? Chara, who clings to their quirky narration for much of the Kill-All, but keeps slipping up, who becomes terrifyingly cold, aggressive, power-hungry, and even sadistic, yet still calls Undyne “the heroine”, still seems to still care about their locket, still has moments where they seem to falter?

Noelle does put up significantly more resistance to the voice’s commands than Chara does, and at least much more visibly shows distress and trauma. I don’t think this is a black mark on Chara’s chara-cter either, or an indication of them being more violent or cruel.

For one, while Noelle is still herself with her own soul, it is heavily implied by Chara, Flowey, and Undertale’s lore that Chara was reincarnated without their own soul, at best perhaps attached to Frisk’s (or yours): as I speculate in one of my currently unfinished theories, while monster souls are made up of love, compassion, and hope and thus Asriel was reincarnated without these qualities, it could well be that human souls are correspondingly made up of their own multiple traits, namely determination, patience, bravery, integrity, perseverance, kindness, and justice; if true, a soulless Chara would be lacking these qualities, which would make them less equipped to resist the player’s commands or to feel as torn up about it.

Also, the player has a hold on them both as “party members” to the player’s vessels, but it is also possible that the player naming Chara and having them directly attached to Frisk also gives them a stronger connection to Chara they can abuse, similar to how Kris and Frisk (as the player’s direct vessels) have much less autonomy than Kris’ party members.

(Fun observation: We know that when the thing controlling Kris forced Noelle into becoming a killer and using her to kill Berdly, Kris was horrified and shaken-up according to Susie and Ralsei. How do you think Frisk felt watching Chara be used to slaughter the Underground and then erasing the world when they’re totally corrupted?)

And lastly... look, Noelle and Chara are both minors, but Chara is significantly younger - a small child compared to Noelle’s teen. I know it’s fiction and strong wills and determination and anime is real and all, but a traumatized young child who died two violent and awful deaths back-to-back, may have literally experienced being a corpse in their own coffin/grave for who knows how long, and then came back ”confused” only to immediately start hearing a voice relentlessly commanding them to kill everyone?? Name: AnneCumberbatch (just call me Anne! She/Her)

Fandoms: BBC Sherlock. I enjoy a smattering of content for other fandoms, but my blog and my writing focuses on Sherlock, specifically johnlock and mystrade.

Where do you post: Ao3, sometimes ficlets on Tumblr and now, apparently, little thread ficlets on Twitter (I newly joined as @theogannecbatch and it’s quite the adventure.)

Most popular multi-chapter fic: For John With Love is my most popular multi-chapter fic. It took me four years to complete and is most representative of my style, perhaps? I personally enjoy seeing myself transition into a more expressive writer throughout the story. It’s a dark johnlock with serial killer Sherlock and johnstrade.

Favorite story you’ve written so far: Hm.. I love my shorter little abstracted angst pieces. So, in my top faves are Pulse, a depressed!Sherlock feat. estranged John and caring Mycroft, Promise, a late night chat turned morning love confession post S4, and To Sleep, Perchance to Dream, a little Sherlock angst bomb. I think those, particularly Pulse, are the ones I think about the most.

Fic you were nervous to post: I think a fic I was nervous about posting... was probably both All we do is hide away back in January and A Sherlock-Shaped Hole this September. All we do was nerve-wracking because it’s a diary POV fic and I’d never done anything like that and I was posting a chapter a day for 38 days. It was quite the journey, but it turned out well, I think. SSH made me nervous because it had been a while since I’d posted a fic of substance. “substance”. So, that made me nervous, to “put to the test” if I was still decent at writing fics. But that also turned out alright, so, that was nice.

How you choose your titles: My titles are either songs that the fic was based on or a reflection of the story. So, my fluff series it’s pretty much based on a phrase or feeling uttered in the series, otherwise it’s just... whatever I think it should be called. Do I regret some of my titles? Yes. Do I regret naming For John, with love that? Hecking yes. But, it is what it is and now I try to name more wisely. Do I also regret A Sherlock-Shaped Hole? Yes. Is it an accurate title? Also yes. So, it’s tricky. - I also love titles. I love having a title for a piece. It feels grounding and reminds me of the focus of the piece. Sometimes, I have to think really hard about it, but other times, they just come to me.

Do you outline: Yes and no. The only pieces I posted that I actually outlined were Bee Socks, For John with love, and A Sherlock-Shaped Hole. Everything else I spit out pretty much as it is. I am a large fan of outlining though. I have pages and pages of WIPs that are outlined, just percolating and waiting for the right moment to emerge as a fic in my brain.

Complete: I’m not sure what this means, but I have around 35 completed fics on A03. Two WIPs posted on there and a cover art. I’m pleased with that so far. Not putting any pressure on myself.

In Progress: I have a hell of a lot of WIPs. I’m currently working on.... my first Mystrade fic that’s very WIP that I’m calling Gorgeous, Beautiful, a little ficlet for a headcanon for another writer who allowed me to write it (untitled), the sequel to All we do is hide away (An End to the Bitter Frosts), a Halloween spooky fic for next year, This Much I Know, and a royal/fantasy?/dark fic called The Son of the King. But honestly, there are probably around 30 WIP projects that I bounce back and forth on. I’m not a steady writer. The one that probably haunts me the most is Bee Socks, but it just spiraled into too big a project (i.e. the pandemic) and so I had to drop it temporarily for mental health reasons. I may pick it back up, or I may just write a chapter summarising what my plans had been. We’ll see.

Coming Soon: Hopefully, Gorgeous, Beautiful will work itself out. And then the headcanon ficlet, of course. Other then that, I have no idea.

Do you accept prompts: I’ve never gotten any prompts, really. I’m not sure. It would have to be within the areas I write in: realism, dark/fluff, no smut, etc. I love writing angst, so if you have a prompt, hit me up and we can chat about it!

Upcoming story you are most excited to write: I’m really excited to write the spooky fic, This Much I Know. I tried to write it in time for Halloween this year but it got away from me and really blossomed into something else. So I’m excited to see what will happen there.

There are so many wonderful stories coming out every day by fantastic writers in this fandom that I couldn’t possibly name one. i’m going with not necessarily my all-time favorite ships but the ones i’ve been reading like crazy lately

stiles and derek, as i’m sure we’re all well aware. those’re my boys. the dynamic they have just cannot be beat; it’s all shades of gray and built rather than plopped down without foundation. derek, who has been betrayed and abandoned and is neglected at every turn by every other character in this universe, and stiles, who - importantly - doesn’t have pity for him but pragmatism: ‘you’re a useful dude, and so i am going to use you regardless of how everyone else would just like to write you off.’ it’s not an immediate, ‘ah, you’re perfect for each other,’ moment, it’s kind of a, ‘shit, dude, that is not a guy you should use because he’s suffered that too many times already and this is bad.’ but only through that does it become less about using derek and more about relying on each other, trusting each other’s judgments, and being the first call rather than the last. i’m so emotionally tied to it because it’s freaking earned and no one is... pure. stiles’ motives aren’t pure, derek’s actions aren’t pure, no one is a one-dimensional hero who can abide by a concept as infantile as good vs evil, they’re more real because of it and i’m more attached to them because of it.

okay, weirdly, lately..... clark and lex (and after i was just talking about one-dimensional good vs evil characters, lol), preferably with the smallville backstory of once being besties. it’s just like the best of the best when it comes to tropes that do it for me. they’re baked in and, unless it’s an au, unavoidable. epic pining, best friends turned enemies turned lovers (or some variation thereof), a betrayed character (love when that’s lex and it’s post-belle reve), a morally gray manipulative genius who if they are depicted as not having ulterior motives is considered WILDLY out of character, a fucking canonical son made from both their dna, parallel universes in canon, not to mention there’s sex pollen in canon as well with red kryptonite in the mix. (there’s nothing better than fics where clark is dosed so he’ll finally kill lex luthor only to fuck him practically down to his soul instead.) i never even finished smallville and while i was always a fan of the ship, it was sort of more of a ‘ships in the night’ kind of ship, like: oh yeah, i know you *waves as you cross my dash* and nothing more. then i read (and read and re-read and read some more) reconcilable differences and.... there is not enough fic for them out there, friends. there just isn’t, and i’m sad.

merlin and arthur from bbc merlin. again, i really like what’s often baked into this pairing: a scenario that comes up with some regularity is a betrayed or banished!merlin and arthur realizing too late what merlin means to him and having to go after him and prove himself. i live for that shit, okay? i live for the character who seemingly has everything realizing they have nothing without this other person (especially if said person is often mistreated or sidelined in canon - thank you, fix-it fanon!!!!). i never was big into merlin fanfic UNTIL ao3 came up with the ‘exclude’ part of the search function. i don’t want modern merlin pretty much ever and somehow that fandom is about 50% modern aus???? so i never read fic for it because it was so hard to find what i was looking for. literally the day i saw the exclude option, i started reading merthur fanfic. i wish there were more percival/merlin fics (i am SO FUCKING INTO size difference lately and i do noooot have a pair that i LOVE that has that, some that i casually read like jaskier/geralt but none that i can’t live without yet and i NEED IT), especially ones featuring a jealous arthur that endgames into merthur but that’s, er, a bit specific? haha, and i have less than zero desire to write for either this fandom or the one above it sadly.

CURRENTLY WATCHING

okay, well, i actually just finished the shows i was watching: prodigal son, which was like a less avant garde, less horny, less gay, less people-eating version of hannibal. instead of a guy who was too unstable to qualify to be an actual fbi agent and who has a loose relationship with reality and mental health, and maybe also a darker side, and a cannibal who definitely does, both of whom badly want to bang each other, it’s a serial killer father who has a darker side and a guy who was fired from the fbi for being too unstable, who maybe has one of his own, in addition to a loose relationship with reality and mental health. i mostly enjoyed it. i really liked the actors, the morbid and understated humor was hilarious (seriously, some of those one liners, both the delivery by the actors and the offhandedness inherent to them were just perfection), but.... they fridged the love interest (very VERY predictably) and they’re clearly shoving together the only unattached (”normal”) vagina and penis on the show because HETERONORMATIVITY!!!!! (i expect more of you, greg berlanti, tsk.) i’m hoping for more edrisa in the future because she is a fucking GEM (and it’s just SO NICE to see lane on my screen again!!!!), more jessica who might have the best sense of self and humor in the whole dang show, more michael sheen (because i just love the man in anything and everything), and about that finale (even though i saw it coming WELL in advance) i’ll just say: AINSLEY, MY GIRLLLLLLLL!!!!

the other i finished was the crown, season four. this show never really wows me tbh. i watch it mostly for a) the performances and b) my mom and dad, who love it immensely and love to talk about it with me. if not for them i could easily zone out for an entire episode without even realizing it, with all the quietness and sweeping landscape shots, there’s just nothing grabby in there for me. it’s very uppercrust british, y’know? haha. where a comment about your lilac drapes is really a dig about how you’re bringing down the entire commonwealth, which i love to read but watching? it doesn’t really pull me in. the high point of this season for me was gillian anderson’s portrayal of margaret thatcher, just the way she would contort her face was amazing to me, and the episode with fagan because hey, i totally knew about that already (which never happens, lol) and i love that actor from preacher and it was just really well-written and acted. but, overall, pretty much i spent the whole season wanting a violent and bloody and embarrassing death to befall charles, that entitled and cruel little piss-ant, while knowing it wasn’t going to happen. it’s one of those shows i watch where i’m glad i watched it, but i won’t remember any details about it in a week’s time.

and as for what i soon will be currently watching: i’m starting the great tomorrow!

I love your fanfics! And I was wondering do you have any tips for original fanfic writing or just writing fics in general?

wow this actually ended up a lot longer than i thought it would, but here we go!

Original fanfics, hmmmmmm....

What I generally do is base things off of my own personal experience. Like all my iida fics are stuff that happened between me and my husband before we got married. Can’t help falling in love fic with bakugo, that was a previous relationship i had (which there is more to that story). Caught with todoroki..... thats how i got out of a ticket with a cop and how i learned that when i half check someone out and half start thinking about what i would do to that fine man in uniform (curse my uniform kink) that i glare/make a suspicious face. and when he confronted me about what i was doing, ready to write some kind of ticket for whatever i was doing wrong, i was so embarrassed that i blurted out that i found him very attractive and what exactly was on my mind and how i wanted to take that uniform off him.... that has happened with a emt too, i missed the green light looking at his bulging biceps after he rolled up his sleeves to write on a clip board.... he waved and i proceeded to squat in my seat and slam my face against the stirring wheel. escape artist cat was actually a dream i had, someone was taking off my cat’s pretty ribbon collars and putting ugly ones on her and i woke up sooooo mad, but i turned that dream into a romance story (reality kuiper was taking her collars off herself cause she was a brat) Stories about yourself, no matter how small you think it is actually has great potential to become a fic.

its also okay to borrow ideas from other forms of media. I do. example, Silk Maiden, based off of an old batman episode from the early 2000s. its completely okay to do that. I’m not saying copy and paste the exact scenes. Just take the premises and then change it. some examples, like the movie Brave is the Scottish version of Aladdin. the princess who wants to be free and live her life beyond her princess duties needs to get married and she is not having it and wants to change the rules and runs away to find something new. premise is the same but how the story is told is different, one denies every prince and find her own prince in the streets of her kingdom and the other finds a cake that turns her mom into a bear that helps them understand each other and appreciate each other more. a weeb example is isekais. There are sooooo many isekais. japan, Korea, and china are all mass producing isekais right now. the premises are all the same, someone from one world now in another world primarily thanks to magical truck-kun who is probably could be branded as a mass serial killer at this point. I read a lot and i love korean isekai romance novels. I have read an isekai where the character was a villain who then was reincarnated with the memories of her villainous previous life who decided to live her new life by repenting by helping others but guess what? truck-kun came in the form of a airplane crash and she wakes up again in her first life’s preteen body before she became a villain. I’m reading an isekai isekai, author of an isekai met truck-kun and woke up inside the body of one of her characters in her isekai novel. all the same premise but told in a different way. i want to write an isekai for bnha! take a premise and write what you wanted to see happen between those characters if they were in that situation.

same for some fanfics, like you read a fanfic and you like the story that you read but you wished for something more. You like the idea but you wished that it went in this direction or you wanted different types of interaction, its okay to write your own fic with the same premises. i’ve done that. (side note: but if you are gonna base off of it where a lot of the stuff is the same the give the proper credit where it deserves. no stealing peoples hard work) thats what fanfic was originally made for, fans wanted something more from their favorite works or wants something different (Thank you star trek fandom who started all this). I’ve read a lot of villain deku fics and i was craving a specific type of villain fic where “he really isnt a villain but is one but there is a reason why hes being evil cause it is for the greater good cause of deku’s savior complex and border line martyr complex he’s had since he was a child” with a side of “hero/villain romance”, “surprise quirk” and “badass” and a healthy scoop of “bakugo becomes a better person on his own without deku at UA through the power of friendship cause he has that potential without deku’s constant interference”. no one had what i wanted, so i started writing it myself.

also dont worry about being original. you can write a common idea that everyone sees a thousand times a day, like isekai, and people will love it. focus on how you are telling your story, dont put so much effort in being different. actually, common or typical tropes/ideas help make the story more relatable. two books can be equally as good but one person can like book A over book B because they felt more connected to the characters in it. they could relate to the emotions that were being conveyed.

now writing tips....hmmmmm well not everything works for everyone but this is what i do

I write notes down, lots of them. I have notebooks full of notes for my fics. some people can just sit there and start writing, but i like notes to keep me on track and remind me of stuff i wanted to add. Writing it down makes it easier not to forget, cause you are just lying to yourself if you think you’ll remember the idea for later. i got dialogue, scenes, plots, random quirk ideas, diagrams, (12) oc profiles, outlines, lists, and a event idea that i have that i want to do some day, all in my notebook. If you are going to write a long fic i strongly encourage that you do this. Outlines are your friend, they are bones of the story Ex:

I always start off with the key things i want for sure to happen. then i start adding to it. I write out the scene i definitely want to see or i can see clearly in my head. i just keep adding to it till its at least three pages long of just outline that has some images, random dialogue i want someone to say or little summaries of the scene i want.

its okay to jump around when you write. there are some parts that you know you need in a story to help it move a long but it can be boring. so i write one scene that i want to happen next and then i think of what needs to happen to get to that point. like how in hero another name where kirishima shows up unannounced to her apartment and finds out she hoards all his hero merch while not wearing pants. how do you make that not sound creepy and have kirishima be okay with it? by adding bits of how much of a fan she is through out the story! when they first have dinner together i threw in that red riot shirt to help break the ice and that he would then know that she was a big enough fan to buy his merch and that she admires him and that he is an inspiration for her. then later adding that interview where she talks about how she became his fan shows that she has years of dedication to him as a hero. so when he sees all the merch she has, it would make sense to him that she had all of that and not go “huh, will i be able to leave this place if i enter?”

if you dont know it, look it up. research. i wrote a fic before where the reader was pregnant the entire time, i started at two months to birth. I knew nothing about pregnancy on how it can affect your daily life and what it feels like beyond what health class and child development class taught me. So i looked it up. there is seriously so much that doctors look for during those many ultrasounds cause there are so many things that can affect your health and the baby’s and did you know there is pregnancy diabetes? you can become diabetic only during pregnancy, like after you give birth it can go away or stay, the human body is just tripy. but thanks to that research, people who have had children before left comments going “yessss, i remember feeling that” or “god, this was my sister in this scene, it sucks”. Its that relatability i mentioned before that really helps and it makes the story more believable.

(this is just my personal opinion mainly here feel free to ignore) when it comes to smut, write what you know and not what you fantasize about. im not calling anyone out but i can tell from how someone writes sex that they never had it and they are most likely younger than me. i’ve experimented a lot in my 25 years of life and i find myself going “oh sweetie, thats not how the vagina/anus works” when i read fics sometimes. there are guides online that are very informative and tell you what the feelings are like that you would expect. dont rely on porn too much on how sex works physically, maybe for dialogue. (i think of porn as just live action fanfics for the human mating ritual fandom). its okay to use other smuts as reference tools as well, especially if you dont know anything of the bdsm lifestyle.

beta readers help a lot. if you are unsure of ideas that you have, talk it out with a friend. I sometimes do this for myself or help others with their fics. its actually a lot of fun with a group of people where you just keep shooting off ideas together about stuff and just go all out fangirlling to the point you are rolling on the ground smiling. this can help with writers block or motivate you to keep writing. also having another pair of eyes to look at your fics, not just for corrections but for input on the story can help make it better. someone can see things from a different angle and point stuff out to you, plot holes or things that you can add.

im not sure what else to say other than stuff like format and spacing. sometimes i see people who write too long of paragraphs or there is no clear separation between them. thats killer on the eyes and makes me not want to read at all cause all i see is this wall of text thats just overwhelming. i want to call who ever formatted textbooks cause thats how they do it and it makes it so hard to concentrate on reading and absorbing the info. if i see fics with no clear breaks or long running paragraphs, i usually give up half way cause i just cant do it. its hard to keep track where you are reading and you start trying to focus on it too much that the story is just lost on me. it is hard on people like me who have dyslexia (who ever called it that is just cruel to people who have it cause you can never spell it without spell check and pronouncing it is just ugggh)

I love being shown how much Castiel has changed throughe Jack not understanding the Kool-Aid reference. And the cats line lol. That’s both amazing and poignant.

That’s a log cabin pattern in the cafeteria. Home. Makes me think back on other quilts we’ve seen this season and if “weaving” is the right metaphor for writing lol. I mean, the action of “patching” is synonymous with “mending” or even healing, but patchwork is also a craft with a long, long history in America (idk if quiltmaking is called patchwork everywhere) of taking a few often mismatched fabrics and cutting and sewing into something beautiful. There are generally two kinds of quilt tops— patterns, like we’ve seen so far in this season, which are carefully planned and involve precise measurements, and “crazy quilts” which also require skill but are often more freeform and piecemeal. But both aspire to be beautiful. That’s an interesting way to conceptualize a serial text... as both creating and mending....

That prayer was sweet and not at all what I was expecting.

I get the finger-cutting for Valerie (stealing=sticky fingers) but not for Connor? Tenuous connection still betw lying and writing? It’s evocative of Se7en but the killer seems to have the same MO for all the killings (I attended CSI for a while.)

Okay I finished it. Holy cats do I have some Thoughts about this episode.

What I loved: Revisiting Dean’s anger, BUT the parental mirror here (in retrospect, at least for me) was a John mirror-- all the mothers (exc for Rowena) in this episode are dead. And Pastor Joe didn’t apparently embrace his wife’s faith until she had died, and then his vision was radically different than his wife’s was-- much like John’s reasons for becoming a hunter were vastly different from Mary’s... but much like “patching” this subtext was possibly even more “healing” than having John back in the 300th ep... This was... looking at a child’s anger when they’re in the middle of their own family mythology. Am I implying that Dean’s anger is immaturity? Eh, it’s... unripeness. I have an old meta in my drafts about the heroine’s journey and why Mary’s story conformed to it while feeling totally unfulfilling in her actual character arc and I’m so glad I sat down and examined that rather than finish it. I have a lot I want to say about Cas’ testimony too, but that has to sit a while. ALSO also, Cas has already thrown away his shot by making the Empty deal, right?....

LANGUAGE! Cas saying “I found myself lost” is a bonkers sentence, right? It’s like when people say someone “turned up missing”-- AND it does not have the same meaning as “I realized I was lost”-- you get a double whammy of the connotation “to search for.” I loved loved loved how language was such a big deal in Last Holiday and then again here, I need to rewatch while paying closer attention to Sylvia and things she says... but these two were sister episodes in so many ways, that when I said there was a “lack of narrative mirrors” in Last Holiday, that’s only because the lens for that kind of reading is Gimme Shelter. That is not the first time spn has played with a “coin” or paired structure-- I think the first time I noticed it was Fan Fiction/Ask Jeeves but I was a transfer student from another fandom at the time lol. But of course, we get a huge truth bomb at the end of the episode, and again that splashy cymbal all over lying...

What I got wrong-- Zack wasn’t the killer but he’s fishy as hell-- he stole Sylvia! Is this part of Rowena’s “people generally end up where they deserve to be” except she’s built in an express lane? “Do you need a driver” is that his actual job now? Taking unripe souls to Hell Orientation? What’s up with him being there... the other shoe did not drop. So there is a third episode out there somewhere where this might get wrapped up? The conversation between Dean and Cas can easily be something that happens offscreen, and I don’t think that it would be the first time we miss an “important” conversation, especially since we know roughly what will be said and how it will wrap up-- it’s an “open text” of a sort. Maybe a fanfiction gap lol, I can’t wait for the codas.

Also, the fingers thing being Sylvia’s father’s favorite analogy is where she got her MO, something that I definitely didn’t see, although it fits right in with her father’s slightly pithy character. I think it’s interesting again how we’re playing with threes and fours. Three fingers got cut off but it was apparent that Valerie (valorious one) wouldn’t die until finger #4.... Jack really seems to be our last hope.

Gwenspiration: The Wacky Version Vol. 3 - The Moodboards

So, here I go again parading myself and tooting like there is no tomorrow.

As people still brave enough to follow me on Tumblr will know, I do a lot of moodboards, or at least I call them such. Others call them collages or storyboards or pictures with random text. Either way, for me, moodboards became a neat tool to somehow capture story ideas not yet anywhere near a level that I could write fic about them - or serve as inspirations for fics I am actually writing.

And it gives me opportunity to hoard unhealthy amounts of Gwen and Nik pics, in the name of moodboards. And science. And stuff. Whoozah!

So yeah, in this post, I want to share some of my personal favorites. A lot of them actually, because I can’t decide, really.

I will start off with a group of moodboards which took inspiration from the Marvel universe, since the Marvel universe was my gateway into the more active parts of fandom.

An all-time fave is the Iron Man AU... I mean, what not to love about a JB AU with Jaime as sassy Tony Stark and Brienne as the not-taking any shit from you army doctor, am I right? But yeah, seriously, Jaime *is* the Tony Stark of the GOT universe, and I can’t be convinced otherwise. And neither should be you.

Also, the Iron Man suits just totally fit the color scheme for both, which made creating the moodboards all the better for me. Jaime and Brienne were made for armor, now in medieval or modern times, let’s not kid ourselves.

Another Marvel fave has got to be Captain Westeros. Because if there is a female GOT Version of Steve Rogers, it’s gotta be Brienne of fuckin’ Tarth. This one is really close to my heart because it gave me a lot of feels coming up with plot bunnies for it, and the tragedy of those two people missing each other in time over and over again, always trying to protect one another, only to end up on opposite sides because of the machinations of others... *sigh*

And I mean, one guy loses an arm. The other is blond and strong... I don’t make the rules but this delivers me enough material to re-imagine this as a JB AU... so yeah, I do kinda make the rules after all. Anyway.

Since I realized that this post’s gonna get even looooonger, I decided to make a cut here and put the rest below, so not to have you scrolling for five hours.

Although it’s not the most popular moodboard amongst my followers (you brave people, I can’t parade you enough for staying through the madness lol), I really, really love that Fantastic Four moodboard and the concept behind it. And I just know a lot of effort went into making Valyrian Steel Brienne, which took all of my three computer editing skillz brain cells. But yeah, here again, I liked to play with the idea of them not admitting to their love until shit hits the fan and then they hide behind that because... drama, angst, feels, pining, yadda.

Jurassic Park (aka Valyrian Park) evidently holds a special place in my heart because JB fighting dinosaur-dragon hybrids and kicking ass while being disbelieving about what was bred out in Valyria thanks to some certain someones to rescue Brienne’s adoptive daughter Arya is just... a thing? For me anyway.

More down memory lane, I don’t know how often I watched the LOTR movies, suffice to say it was a lot a lot. We had the extended versions DVDs of the first two and basically it was the one thing to watch when nothing was on (which was the case a lot). Either way. JB in MIddle Earth long after the days of Frodo et al. - why? Because I just loved the idea (and aesthetic) of Jaime as a ranger and Brienne as a knight of Gondor working in disguise. And Hobbipod. I mean, Pod as a Hobbit. Come the fuck on. And Tyrion as an asshole wizard. What could possibly go wrong? This moodboard was very time-consuming as I had to do a lot of edits (pointy ears, tiny up people, smudge Brienne’s face on a lot of Boromir and Faramir images, smudge Jaime’s face on a lot of Aragorn images, you name it). So yeah. No matter its popularity... I dig it. Despite not having read the books yet (I know, shocking), I continue to ogle at the idea and go like: Must. Write. But. Must. Resist. Either way. Mood.

So yeah, I grew up watching these movies a lot, too (I grew up watching a lot of TV, period). And when Gwen was cast as Captain Phasma, I got a lot of JB juices flowing as a result. Mehe. I found it was a fun idea to play with, to basically *kill* Phasma so *Brienne* can come into play and assume her identity. And a rundown Jedi!Jaime who’s lost faith in himself and everything else safe for his partner in crime/resistance is just... I needz. So you gotta cope with it. I still adore this concept a lot even if others may not. :)

This one’s just... gah. Feels. And I really liked the color scheme lol. And I watched Horse Whisperer A LOT. Because of feels. And horses. And Honor is a horse and he deserved better than be barbecued at Highgarden, dammit.

The No Reservations AU definitely has to be in this post because I live for this dynamic. Brienne taking care of the girls, not knowing how, though, constantly doubting herself while always trying to be perfect and composed, not just in life but on the job as well. And Jaime being the laid-back guy who’s just a darn good chef but may carry his own baggage of problems that keep him from his happy ending story is just... mah jam.

This one was a lot of fun to do because you don’t really think about Erin Brockovich when you say Brienne of Tarth in terms of character. But when you scratch away the boob jokes and the differences in where they come from, what you find are two hard-working women who fight for justice, so I found that close enough. And it was excuse enough for me to go down the lane of biker!Jaime because... dayum.

Music and Lyrics is an all-time guilty pleasure romcom of mine. It’s so light and easy and I kind of love how everyone is basically a bunch of awkward losers. All the more perfect for Jaime as a singer (we need that in our lives after the infamous video Nik was in to sing to us about global warming...) and Brienne as the unexpectedly gifted songwriter. What I like about the moodboard per se is how the color scheme turned out because it’s all warm and bright and... makes me happy.

Very much in contrast to the former stands this one. I still love the overall mood of it and I dig the story idea because I dug both The Prestige and The Illustionist because they presented something dark yet very different, which made it all the more appealing to put into a moodboard for me. While not the most well-known moodboard of mine, I keep going back to it time and time again to basically lust at all the illusions and magic and drama. And blue butterflies.

What is there not to love about a Pacific Rim AU for JB, am I right? Right?! JB ain’t just compatible when it comes to the Drift, yo, that’s all I’m gonna say. Reasons why I like the moodboard a lot is that it’s very different, flashy colors, gigantic robots, and I was mostly alright with how the edits turned out. It is tough to get images that fit the angles, yo.

Jumping back in time once more, I really adore this one even though it’s not one of my popular moodboards. I dug the fusion of elements from Cinderella Man while granting Brienne as the female lead more space to develop as a character and make her a badass sniper nurse who is about to get her doctor’s degree. And Jaime doing anything to make it work because he owes her a debt (and his love) by boxing his way to their shared life is just... nice.

Another supposedly lesser known moodboard is this one, though I really adore it for its premise and the amount of work I put into it (all the giffing and moodboarding). I also found use for that image of Gwen with what looks like the veil of a nun, which was probably what had me inspired in the first place lol. The plot bunnies revolve less around Se7en and more the novel El ùltimo Catón (2001) because it has a nun solving a mystery revolving around Dante’s works. But Se7en gives us the Seven, which is a delicious parallel too hard to ignore. For me at least. If only I knew how to write crime, dammit.

Now, to move more into the serial (smooth transition from serial killer to serial TV shows, I know, I know) way of life, here is some moodboards inspired by TV shows (although some have since gotten movies which I also took inspiration from... yadda):

Childhood memory galore. I spent many weekends watching The A-Team with the whole family. When the movie came out, I was happy about the feels it gave me (and the “you spin my head right round” scene still cracks me up more often than it should). Either way. I found it absolutely necessary for Jaime to be Face, for Tyrion to be Hannibal, for Bronn to be B.A. and cuss at everyone and everything and Brienne giving us the strangest genderbend of a Howling Mad Murdock. It added some angst, which I always need because I am a thirsty hoe for it. In case no one noticed yet. Ha.

This one is very remotely inspired by The Bletchley Circle and the Imitation Game (because both feature encryption and one features Charles Dance already, yo.) I just really dug the idea of Brienne being so good at this because she is such a straight thinker but being underestimated because “she a woman.” And of course her not being done just encoding messages but getting into action, very much to the dismay of the stupid soldier wanting to defend the bae from harm. What could possibly go wrong? Right. A lot.

Then. Elementary. Let me count the ways in which I love that show... ALL THE WAYS. And I really dig it as a JB AU. I have so many thoughts and feelings, I can’t even begin to tell you. I especially had my fun basically making Jaime Sherlock without making him really Sherlock because that guy was the one who taught him how to be an investigator before disappearing and fucking up his life for bad. And Brienne as the army doctor turned sober companion turned private investigator turned love interest is just too delicious to ignore.

Pants down I mean hands down, this may be the actual favorite (currently) amongst them all for the plain reason that I also grew up watching that series and still watch it and keep obsessing about it. Ever since Discovery launched and has since given me both joy and grief, I found myself intrigued by the premise of a JB Star Trek AU where Brienne would be standing *with* the Klingons during the war around the time Discovery takes place, and Captain Jaime Lannister having lost far too much to this war already to truly trust anyone, even less so a woman who ran to the Klingons, for what it seems.

You would not believe how many ideas I have for a fic based on it. You wouldn’t believe that I basically have a sequel to that fic already in mind. And you would definitely believe, knowing me, that I am nowhere near writing that fic. But a fangirl can dream and moodboard, right? The moodboard was such a fun way of going about it, not only for the edits but because I could sneak some secret Klingon messages in there. :)

Now, on to the last part, which are the moodboards not inspired by movies or TV shows primarily but really just spewed out of my wacky, wacky brain:

This has a special place in my heart because it combines military and the traumas it comes with for JB and.... the aesthetic of farming. And both finding a kind of peace they didn’t know they were looking for as they struggle to adjust and find their way back “to normal” after the horrors they have both seen in war. And did I mention the aesthetic? And Jaime in plaid? All dirty and sweaty? Do I have to say more?

Why this one? Because it combines angst and romance and falling in love twice because DESTINY. And paintings. I love me my artist AUs. So that was my go at it, combining it with the “mystery” to be uncovered about what history Jaime and Brienne actually share as he tries to put his memories back together. Also. This moodboard gave me opportunity to try out new filters and create JB paintings. :)

This one’s gotta be on the list since I also added the Horse Whisperer. Now it’s Dog Whisperer Jaime and Brienne who won’t give up on her dog who’s seen some shit in the warzone (as did she, but Brienne will put it all aside for her doggish best buddy, of course). While it’s not a very popular moodboard of mine, I really enjoy the premise of it and how the dynamics can so easily change between the two of them if you see it in comparison to the Horse Whisperer AU. Also. I just really think Jaime is a total pet person.

Another lesser known moodboard, I’d assume, but I really dug the premise of it (still do), and it was intriguing to do some edits to make Jaime’s hand *truly* golden lol. With people having developed strange mutations which aren’t nearly as much fun as they are in Fantastic Four AUs. What I liked about it was the idea that Brienne would have a kind of mutation/ability that links to the mind, since she is such a physically strong fighter that she may rather rely on that than on her own mind, fearing that she cannot control that with discipline the same way she can train her body with it. What unites the two is their strong wish to protect the people in their care, in a world on the verge of collapse forcing two unexpected allies together (okay, I totally expected it, but they didn’t). Either way. Much love for this one. :)

Aaaand the last one (not of all the ones I made but the ones I picked for Gwenspiration). I really, really, really adore this one because I was so happy with how the aesthetic turned out and how the colors all match. And I dig the premise. Like holy moly do I dig it deep. Jaime and Brienne both serving in military, but on different fronts, and almost accidentally ending up writing each other letters? I mean... the PINING. And Brienne having to decipher Jaime’s chickenscratch. Yeah no, but for real. I just love the idea so much. That they are both committed to the cause while also yearning for a home, for peaceful times, for sweet, sweet love. And them meeting up and acting like stupid teenagers, only for drama to keep hitting because. It’s eh me angsty Wacky.

Either way. I dig the premises of a lot of my moodboards (in fact... basically all of them or else I wouldn’t be making them, I guess). Ok, this is kind of a rant on the creepypasta fandom because it's kinda trash.

So... I'm somewhat getting back into the fandom because I do really love the stories. I was looking up Ticci Toby since he's one of my favorite stories, and I went in his fandom page. First mistake. The only reason was because I was curious about what his birthday was. I looked at his personality traits and one of them was waffle. WAFFLE... The entire fandom has created a completely fanon Toby that is entirely different from canon. In canon, he's a snarky, sarcastic bastard. In fanon, however, he's a happy-go-lucky sunshine child who's obsessed with waffles. This is one of the main reasons why I got away from the fandom in the first place because the people in it (not all, and I respect the good ones in this fandom) go this kind of thing to the characters, completely changing them. Also, on this fandom page, I looked at the comments. Second mistake. I cant even describe some of these people, so I'm just gonna quote some of the comments. "Since I have heard about Ticci Toby, I really want to be a creepypasta too. And since I'm a creepypasta-fan, I hear voices in my head and I'm talkin' to myself. Can somebody tell me: I'm gonna be a real creepypasta, or I'm just completely insane? I like blood too... hahaha, go to sleep" ... WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS COMMENT?!?! First off, you do realize that they're serial killers and fictional, right? Or no? Because from this comment, you seem to have 2 brain cells. And the voices are probably just them being obsessed with him as a character. And it's real cringe since they quoted another creepypasta, Jeff the Killer, and thought they were becoming a real creepypasta. They fictional hon, sorry.

Another quote from a few people,

"He dead that he kills people because that they say how much tics he has he has 0 (I have a crush on him) hehehe"

"What do you mean 'he dead'"

"I'm not stupid I love him!"

"I love him too so back off!!!"

...I cringed so much just reading that. Again, they are fictional serial killers. It's almost as bad as those people who idolize Ted Bundy. And also, did you learn proper grammar as well?

Hon, it's gonna take some heavy dreaming to even try to accomplish this. Most people just dont realize that the stories are meant to SCARE YOU!! You aren't supposed to have a crush on them, that's just stupid.

I know this turned into a huge rant, but oh well. The creepypasta fandom is such trash though, mainly because of these fangirls ruining the characters. The characters from the stories are supposed to be scary. They kill people. They aren't some hot hunks that can sweep you off your feet.

What begins as a transforming love between Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak in the summer of 1965 quickly derails into something far more tumultuous when Dean is drafted in the Vietnam War. Though the two both voice their relationship is one where saying goodbye is never a real truth, their story becomes fraught with the tragedy of circumstance. In an era where homosexuality was especially vulnerable, Twist and Shout is the story of the love transcending time, returning over and over in its many forms, as faithful as the sea.

Excuse you!!!!! First of all, anon, if you ever call yourself that again I will find you on your birthday and I will take from you that which you love the most. If at any point I happen to say something that rings true or seems even vaguely insightful, that is a product of practice and experience and has nothing to do with natural aptitude! Literally I have been trained for more than a decade to read things as a career, and I’m still slowly learning how to do it better!

It is, of course, also a product of even less remunerative forms of practice and experience-- that is to say, too much time in fandom. Even in that regard, there’s still more for me to learn! But it’s really fun to think about how each fandom has its own distinct ecology, how each subsection of that fandom operates under a distinct microclimate, and how each country (or linguistic community) has such different norms of engagement YEAH THAT’S RIGHT THE THIRD ITEM IN THIS LIST DOESN’T COME WITH AN ENVIRONMENTAL METAPHOR

I think that’s the problem with fan studies academics who aren’t actually knee-deep in the filth of fandom, but are just... distantly fascinated by fandom; they’re trying to draw global conclusions by aggregating disparate sets of local phenomena, because they haven’t run up against how heterogeneous fandom is on the ground level. I mean, sure, there are trends! There are waves! But sometimes people do arrive at the same thing via wildly different paths, and having seen that makes me reluctant to come to any kind of conclusion (other than only very tentative suggestions). So everything I say here should probably be read as you picture me shrugging so noncommittally that my shoulders shoot up past my ears. (Thank you very much for reading v v v)

Gosh I love Hatoful Boyfriend SO MUCH. I have to confess, though, that this is one of those canons/fandoms where my love is composed mostly of the emotional memories that I have from the process of playing the game, not of any recall of actual factual details! I did play it and a short bit of Holiday Star, but I didn’t actively seek out the fandom or any fanworks, and I think that allowed a lot of the plot to ebb from my brain over time. But, I mean, it’s like 95% still there! I’ve only forgotten some of the intricacies of the BBL route!

Hatoful is a MIRACLE. It is an IMPROBABLE CONFLAGRATION WITH GREAT CHARACTERS and it would surprise absolutely no one who is familiar with my terrible track record with character preferences to hear that my first instinct was to make a beeline for Shuu. Not even exactly because of AH MY SERIAL KILLER PARTRIDGE DOCTOR LOVER feelings, but more-- I just really needed to see what he was about??!? And then it turned out that what he was about was Ryuuji Kawara, which (it would also surprise no one to hear) I was INTO. You know what I was also into?? That bit during the epilogue where Kazuaki turns up pushing Shuu’s wheelchair and Sakuya is like ?!?!?! APPLYING ETHICAL GUIDELINES TO EITHER OF YOU IS COMPLETELY FUTILE. Like what kind of convalescence interactions are Kazuaki and Shuu even having during this time!! They are both SO INCAPABLE OF RELATING TO EACH OTHER IN WELL-ADJUSTED WAYS that I was charmed in the way that you are charmed when you see something so intractable that it defies understanding. I just want them to have hilariously maladaptive cohabitation routines where they are both SO SERIOUS about themselves and the entire rest of the cast is just like ????!?!??!?!?!!?! WHY IS THIS HAPPENING

I ended up talking a lot about Shuu, but I really do love all of them so much. They are all so special and if I started shouting the names of characters I loved I would just end up shouting all of them! It’s debatable whether Shuu is even my favorite, because Okosan exists... as does Anghel... and Yuuya... and Azami... and Sakuya... and... SEE THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS AFRAID WOULD HAPPEN. Anon you are a blessing for sending in this ask and you should tell me your feelings about Hatoful too!

Oh my god I hope that in this AU Josh is Troy but that the plot is split in half instead of converging so that Josh is just running around having important epiphanies and going through crises and falling in love with whoever Gabriella is, but it’s happening entirely in the background while Simon and Markus just engage in one elaborately convoluted set piece metaphor after another about Markus discovering his sexuality. At the end of the movie they meet up and Josh is like “Guys so much has happened, I don’t know where to start” and Markus is like “Okay! Well Simon and I are an item now” and Josh is like “...That’s too big a thing, you were supposed to be the side plot”

I realize that “I Don’t Dance” is from HSM 2 but honestly that is a sequel that is FAR SUPERIOR to the original!!!!!!!!!! (Insert 15-minute monologue here about how I think “Bet on It” is one of the funniest pieces of cultural output that humanity has ever produced.)

WEEKEND AO3 UPDATES!

What are you reading this weekend? Need some titles? I am behind on quite a few and I have even more in my “to be read” list, but some of my old and new favorites updated this weekend, close to this weekend, or will update tomorrow, so here are “Pandora’s Picks” if you just don’t feel like getting out this weekend and want some reading time! Some are doing extremely well and some of this fics for whatever reason are not making it onto people’s radar.

What is my taste in fiction? Well, like a lot of people, it is VARIED. That means you can’t really link this list together as one category. I’ll try to say a few things about why I like each one and the category and age group I think it’s appropriate for. That sounds horrible because I know I read every smut book I could find when I was a teenager, but believe me when I say now I wish I hadn’t read some of them - some were above my understanding and others were kinda scary and turned me off sex. Since Tumblr has a wide range of readers, I’m trying to bear that in mind when recommending stuff.

So let’s begin:

SKYWALKERS by Wissixwe updated! This is the sequel to Strategic Alliances, which I recommend reading first, but it can work as a stand-alone. Teens and up can read this. There are sex scenes but not graphic. There are original pairings with new characters. The writer is very creative and intelligent and does a lot of world building, so if you dive into sci-fi deep, this is your kind of fic. SKYWALKERS is canon divergent (since TLJ came out) and Luke is a strong heroic character. And he has a girlfriend!! (Original character). Leia is beautifully written as well. Honestly, she writes Luke is the way I wish he’d been done in TLJ. Reylo is also done really well in this. There are so many quirky characters in this and so many cool concepts like bending space, and then there is the lyrical writing style of the author. If you want a fast a dirty read, skip it, but it you like original concepts and beautifully crafted sentences, this is your author. I look for her to be published one day.

Vampire’s Kiss by DragonWhiskers updated this past week and is moving toward the finale of this part of her “Monsters Are We All” series. This popular author has a pretty large readership, but I don’t know if everyone has discovered her yet. Her style is erotic writing, and therefore I would say this is an 18 and up fic; the rating is explicit. This is a Gothic read with a Vampire Kylo Ren that is sort of Crimson Peak meets old style Gothic Horror romance with a sultry dance toward....doom? death? Ecstasy? We don’t know yet!

A Secret Between Us by Terapid updated. This is a new fic rated Mature, so I’d say 18+, and this will be a short work completed in 6 chapters (but they are long chapters). Set after the Last Jedi. “Despite Rey’s best effort, the Bond with Kylo Ren strengthens. Making matters more complicated, Kylo has learned to manipulate her environment—putting the whole Rebellion at risk.” Love the way this author combines action and sensual/erotic romance with Reylo, and there’s always a twist with his stories. I like his Kylo because he’s very strong and aggressive but is also protective toward Rey. I love all his stories, but this is a fun one because it is set after TLJ and it has 4 out of the 6 chapters completed, so the payoff is nigh.

Praxis by CoraRiley will update tomorrow! This is a relatively new fic about halfway done, and this is definitely 18+, Explicit, Serial Killer Kylo AU in which Rey is kidnapped. Dub-con. READ THE TAGS FIRST. If this isn’t your thing, just skip it. Again, this one is not for everyone, but if you can handle Dark Kylo and smut and you like a thriller vibe on top of it, this is your fic. No happy endings are promised, but then again it could be fine. We don’t know! I don’t know! It’s driving me NUTS!!!!! Augggh!

Unbidden by Perry Downing updated. If you don’t know about this one, you’ve been hiding under a rock, probably, or like me, you floated around AO3 your first year and never caught her other works! This is set entirely post TLJ - she works hard at it and she started this fic immediately after the movie came out. Once you start reading, you get hooked! It’s tagged as Explicit, and there are graphic sex scenes but they are also pretty tastefully done. I’d say 18+ but she’s very good about giving a heads up when there are sex scenes and her stories always have a happily ever after to them, so if you don’t want to be worried about any dark twists, you are totally safe with her fics. They are very comforting to read, and she’s very psychological in her examination of Kylo and Rey. If you liked Thwarted, you will like this one! Have some tissues handy, because she is an expert at writing mother/son scenes and other sensitive issues in this saga that will grab your heart and give you “all the feels,” as they say. It’s also not without suspense.....I’m keeping a worried eye on Hux and what he’s up to!

The Desert Rose by LastMouseLeft has updated. This is a new work by her - you may know the name from her WIP, A Gift For the Emperor . Both are rated Explicit, so I would say 18+ for sure. A Gift for the Emperor is one of my favorites and is more like a dreamy fairytale, lots of description, and a great love story that is still unfolding. The Desert Rose is one she just started and I don’t know much about it yet except it has Kylo Ren as a A Jinn, something I had thought was made up, but is part of folklore. Creative concept - AU where Rey is part of his harem and Kylo has the magical powers of a Jinn. ORIGINAL is my first thought on this one. Again, 18+, as I don’t know how explicit it will get but it is tagged. It might be your thing and it might not be...I’m giving it a try!

Forces Intertwined by Marla_Singer21 has updated a couple of times in the past few weeks. This is a story you may have started and forgotten about since she took a break from writing it but has returned. I’m going to have to reread it, but it was one of my favorites when I first got here in 2016. “Great interrogation room scenes” was my first thought. So yes, 18+ and Explicit again. Lots of sexual tension and it was building toward a great plot. A sexy read...

The Escort by grliegirl I’m giving a shoutout to even though it is a completed work I’ve posted about before! This Pretty Woman/Reylo crossover AU has hit 800 kudos! I just saw that, and I wanted to say Congratulations! She is someone I saw often in the comments and clicked on her user and saw this story, so I read it and REALLY enjoyed it. If you liked the Pretty Woman film with Julia Roberts, this is written in the same vein only with Reylo, great sex, humor, and an uplifting feel throughout the story and after. If you need a pick-me-up mood booster, read this one. Rumors are there may be a sequel in the works? Here’s hoping!

NON-REYLO MENTIONS:

Hanging from a Cross of Iron by Juulna has updated! This is set in the Marvel universe and I’m hearing raves about it! If Tony Stark and Bucky captivate you, this is a great fic to settle down with written by a fantastic writer! This is on my list to read after I get caught up with the movies! I’ve read her fics in the Reylo category and Reylux categories before, and she blows me away with her writing ability. Definitely an author to subscribe to. Tagged as Explicit, so I’m thinking 18+ here as well.

Jadeite by DarkPhoenix24 updated. This is for Mara Jade fans or Reylos who are ready to read about a different pairing. I LOVE this and tragically because of the fandom usually wanting only Reylo, it’s largely unnoticed. I freaking LOVE this plot! Mara Jade (I never read the Legends books, but now I know who she is) was frozen in carbonite and ended up in the world post TFA. She is without a doubt one of the most badass characters I’ve read about. She’s paired with Kylo Ren in this, but it is a slow burn, and you will see Rey and Leia and the others in this, but on opposing sides. She is remarkably creative and again, ORIGINAL. You won’t find anything else like this on AO3. If you do, tag me, please! What’s more, the Emperor is back, and frankly since Snoke was disposed of so quickly with no revelations, I like having a Big Bad where I know the background. This is a FUN READ!!!

Is The Batman Adapting Hush?

What is he hiding under there? That is typically what the denizens of Gotham might ask in a Dark Knight movie about the Batman himself. But in the new The Batman trailer, the audience are the ones left to speculate about why we never see the face of Paul Dano’s the Riddler, who is only referred to in the new sizzle reel footage as a “serial killer.”

With his taped on mask and oversized glasses, Dano’s Riddler initially looks like something out of a David Fincher movie. John Doe meets the Zodiac Killer. Yet the more we’ve seen of him—and from how the new The Batman trailer even hides what appears to be the Riddler’s face during an interrogation scene—I’m left wondering if there’s a reason for all the mystery, especially in light of the ways this film is clearly inspired by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee’s Batman: Hush, a 12-issue comic book story arc from the early 2000s. As one of the seminal Riddler and Catwoman storylines from the 21st century, Hush is often cited as a favorite among Batman fans. Now in the wake of the new trailer released at DC Fandome 2021, we’re left to guess if writer-director Matt Reeves is among them.

But first have another look at that trailer:

The Sins of Whose Father?

The biggest clue about the parallels between the new film and Hush comes during a moment in the trailer when Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne—and notably not Batman—stumbles upon a riddle that might also be a crime scene. Shirtless and devoid of his Dark Knight attire, Bruce is filmed from an overhead shot standing in a literal riddle. The Riddler apparently has an axe to grind with all of Gotham’s elites and civic leaders, and so he’s written multiple names in chalk on the floor alongside corroborating photographs. “No More Lies, Colson,” refers to Peter Sarsgaard’s district attorney, who might meet a fate worse than Harvey Dent judging by how one of The Batman’s big set-pieces clearly takes place in a courthouse. “Mitchell” and “Savage” meanwhile refer to Gotham’s mayor and police commissioner, respectively.

But then there’s that last opaque riddle. “The Sins of My Father??” is written on the floor, with a chalk line leading directly to a question mark in the center of the room where Bruce is standing. Notably, there are no incriminating photos accompanying these scribblings. Is the “father” referring to the Riddler’s parent or the Batman’s? Given one of them is (presumably) Edward Nygma and the other Bruce Wayne, the son of Gotham’s last richest city elder, it’s pretty easy to guess. Thus this teases several things for comic book fans:

The Riddler has beef with Thomas Wayne.

The Riddler knows Batman is Bruce Wayne, with this scene looking like it could be in the Batcave.

The Riddler has personal reasons for wanting to kill Batman.

This would certainly explain the hostility of the Riddler’s messages to Batman in the new trailer, which instead of a funny play on words can be as blunt as “see you in hell.” At another point in the trailer, he promises the Batman that he’ll be “black and blue, and dead all over” before this story is over. All of which echoes the criminal conspiracy in Hush.

The Hush Connection

In the Loeb/Lee comics, the Caped Crusader stumbles into a criminal conspiracy involving the Riddler and a character he never knew was his enemy: Thomas Elliot, aka Hush. On the page, Elliot and Bruce were childhood friends, at least in Bruce’s mind, with Elliot taking after Bruce’s father and becoming a gifted surgeon. That is until Elliot fakes his death at the hands of the Joker, getting Batman to mourn his passing. In actuality though, Elliot entered into an elaborate plan with the Riddler, who through complicated means had finally deduced that Bruce Wayne is Batman. As it turns out, Elliot also had a lifelong grudge against the Waynes because when he was a boy, he attempted to murder his own parents by sabotaging their car. But Thomas Wayne, the other gifted surgeon and Elliot’s namesake, was able to save the life of Elliot’s mother—resulting in Elliot being unable to inherit his parents’ fortune for decades to come.

It’s a pretty absurd motivation, but it provides the impetus for a mysterious masked villain who hides behind bandages and who engineers Batman’s downfall, including by collaborating with a slew of the Dark Knight’s classic rogues gallery who make cameo appearances. Yes, Penguin is among them.

Interestingly, Hush has been adapted before in several mediums, but it’s never been done exactly the same as in the comics. In the Batman: Arkham games, Elliot/Hush features in a subplot across two games where it is revealed he used plastic surgery in order to look like Bruce Wayne and steal his fortune (which has roots from a different comic storyline). Meanwhile, and perhaps more intriguingly for The Batman, a 2019 animated film released straight to video by DC Animation combined the characters of Hush and Riddler, with the latter still figuring out Batman’s identity and then creating the Hush persona to lure an unsuspecting Batman and Catwoman into his new, more violent game without riddles.

While we doubt Reeves is turning to a direct-to-video animated film for inspiration, it does provide a recent example of the creative impulse to rework Hush into a Riddler storyline that jettisons Elliot’s soapy motivation for vengeance. Although that doesn’t mean you couldn’t create another involving the Waynes. Plus, the Riddler isn’t the only major rogue from Hush who’s prominently featured in The Batman trailer.

The Batman / Catwoman Connection

Beyond the Riddler, there’s also another significant element from Batman: Hush, which is clearly influencing The Batman, just as it did The Dark Knight Rises, the Arkham video games, and more or less all modern Batman media: the relationship between Batman and Catwoman, Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle.

While the characters have always had a playful flirtation since Catwoman’s first appearance in Batman #1 (1940), their relationship constantly remained at least vaguely antagonistic. She was the villain with a heart of gold, but Batman always had to put her behind bars or let her escape. That changed in Hush when Catwoman basically became an intermittent partner to Batman. Selina still occasionally moonlights as a cat burglar in the comics, but she more often than not has become Bruce’s confidant and ally in modern lore—and eventually his bride. This all started in the issue of Hush where Bruce dared to take off his mask in front of Selina Kyle. That was the moment where Catwoman fully transitioned from the realm of “villain” to that of antihero.

Since then Bruce and Selina, as opposed to “Batman and Catwoman,” have often been colleagues working together as much as against one another, an element Christopher Nolan certainly embraced in the most recent solo Batman movie. Technically, Nolan even married Bruce and Selina before comic book writer Tom King did the same (kind of).

It remans to be seen whether Zoe Kravitz’s Selina will be as cleanly heroic in The Batman as Catwoman is in Hush, but the new trailer shows her often without her mask and in Batman’s company, including in one shot that appears to be set in a subterranean lair. Could that be Pattinson’s version of the Batcave? Also like the Catwoman of Hush, Kravitz’s Selina is visibly shaken by the sight of how violent Bruce can get while beating a criminal in a rage (which occurs on the page after Batman mistakenly believes his friend Thomas Elliot has been murdered).

This is not to say that The Batman will be a direct one-to-one adaptation of Hush. But just as Nolan drew heavy inspiration from Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s Batman: Year One on Batman Begins, and inspiration from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s The Long Halloween on The Dark Knight, it seems like Hush could be having a major impact on Reeves’ The Batman.

The new film is a story that involves many of Batman’s larger rogues gallery, like Hush, and an adventure that seems to dive into Bruce’s family history. And the primary classic rogues most entangled in its narrative web? Catwoman and the Riddler. There’s even a scene of Batman going to a cemetery in both stories, wearing a very formal black attire… perhaps there’s an old clue he needs to dig up in The Batman?

All of which brings me back to that basic question about Dano’s Riddler: Why are they hiding his face, even when the serial killer (or someone working with him) is being interrogated by Batman behind plexiglass? There’s a nefarious game at play in The Batman, and at least one of the players appears to be staying very hush, hush about his role in it.
