apologies if I'm asking something you've talked about before (or are tired of talking about) but I saw you love Suyin and I had a question. I overall really liked her character and her stuff as ZaoFu's leader / thought she always makes interesting choices where I can see where she's coming from, even if I don't always agree with her entirely (like most TLOK characters and good characters in gneral). I found her dynamic with Kuvira to be particularly interesting. I always thought it was a little odd / it didn't sit entirely right with me at the end of the show when she accepts Bataar Jr. back (after Kuvira turns on him, rather than him wanting to change his ways) but remains very cold with Kuvira when she chooses more actively to surrender. Do you think it's lingering anger w/ Suyin feeling like Bataar has been strung along/betrayed -- emotionally protecting her son at the cost of her adoptive daughter? Or something else? I'd be really curious to hear with u think if you have the time and inclination

Thank you for the ask, this is actually something I have wanted to talk about, but haven't ever been able to get around to it. I'll focus on everything happening post Kuvira betraying Baatar and maybe one day do a deeper dive into Su and Kuvira's relationship as a whole.

Ok, so to get the most straightforward answer out of the way, I'm sure that Baatar being Suyin's biological son certainly had something to do with it.

Suyin, while being someone who eagerly accepts others into her family, clearly puts some sort of value into blood relation. She calls upon it when trying to get through to Lin. Suyin grew up with a seemingly strained relationship with her family, and travelled the world to fill that void. She filled that void with Baatar Sr, first building a home, and eventually the family that she always longed for. Baatar Jr is the first child of their marriage, and the spitting image of the man who literally made her dreams a reality. Like yeah there would be a bit of favouritism there I think.

While Baatar was certainly a huge part of the Earth Empire, being Kuvira's right hand man, Kuvira was still the face and driving force of the Earth Empire. She was the one who initiated the idea. She is the one who secures the deals and utilises the cult of her personality to control the masses. Bataar supports Kuvira in her endeavours, but it seems to ultimately be Kuvira who calls the shots.

Baatar is an interesting character, because while he seems to subscribe to the Earth Empire's ideology to some extent, it all is secondary to his own self realisation and his love for Kuvira. He doesn't try to save the project Varrick threatened to blow up, he seems to enjoy messing with Su, Opal and his father, rather than making any political statements. And most tellingly, he immediately folds like a plastic lawnchair when Korra threatens to take Kuvira away from him.

While I don't think Kuvira was in actuality manipulating Baatar, but from Suyin's perspective, Kuvira was the one who first brought up the idea of reunifying the Earth Kingdom. Kuvira is the face of the Earth Empire, she's the centre of the cult of personality, making the speeches and seemingly calling the shots.

Suyin : You must realize what you're doing goes against everything your father and I tried to teach you. Baatar : Son, you belong here. Baatar Jr: Why? So that I could go on living in your shadow? Suyin : Don't say that! Can't you see she's brainwashed you!

Like Kuvira is so clearly one of the most important things to Baatar, so much so that he completely shuts down emotionally.

Like look at him that's a broken man there's not much to even be mad at like he looks like he just wants to lie face flat on the floor in a corner and weep.

And Suyin has had like, a first class view of that broken man. Though I do like that she didn't take that opportunity to talk poorly about Kuvira or to do an 'I told you so' moment.

Baatar Jr: I gave my life to Kuvira and she just fired that weapon at me. How could she do that? Suyin : I don't know, sweetie. She's a complicated person.

Kuvira is also, like, responsible for 4/5 of Suyin's children almost dying. Baatar's betrayal was brutal, Opal got shot out of the sky and the twins almost got the 'two birds one laser blast' treatment.

Like I think this is a big deal to momma bear Suyin. Even Baatar paused when he realised Opal was in danger of being shot by the laser during Operation Beifong.

Cut back to Kuvira's factory. The cannon's turret slides into place, focusing its sights on the town. Baatar Jr. pushes up the lever to fire the weapon and looks through a pair of binoculars. He spies Opal, Bolin, and Juicy near Zhu Li. Baatar Jr.: Opal? No! [Faces Kuvira.] We have to stop the test!

I've said that particularly when we see Su react to the twins being shot down, she looks extremely pissed. Like those are her youngest, her babies, and nr 3 and 4 on Kuvira's attempted fratricide track record.

Suyin values her family deeply, and is already distressed that Kuvira initiated the family splintering in two, but now Kuvira is trying to permanently remove Beifongs from the census. Like yeah, I think this would cause distress. Previously, Suyin's anger at Kuvira was due to Kuvira breaking off, political differences, and due to Kuvira being an actual threat. Now Kuvira has actively gone much too far for Su.

I also think that, to Suyin, apologies mean less than you would expect. She seems to have her own system of measuring remorse, be it a bit skewed. She places the same expectations she had for herself, prioritising change over words of apology.

Kuvira's surrender and subsequent apology seemed to not fulfill these expectations, and I can find a few reasons why.

Kuvira: Stand down. This battle is over. I owe the Avatar my life. Her power is beyond anything I could ever hope to achieve. I'll accept whatever punishment the world sees fit. And Su, I'm sorry for all the anguish I've caused you and your family.

I always found Kuvira's apologies very lacklustre, because she doesn't really seem to accept the error of her ways. She speaks mainly of Korra's power, and uses very general terms. None of this really shows that she changed any of her views.

The comics sort of lean into this, because she is very butthurt over not being forgiven for her warcrimes and attempted murders after a few months.

And while the show and comics don't really give us much about Baatar post the war, he seems much more apologetic, not using general terms like 'anguish', but speaking about his betrayal, and doesn't expect forgiveness from the hurt parties.

Baatar Jr.: Mom, I'm so sorry. I betrayed you, the whole family. [..] Wing and Wei will never forgive me. And Opal.

Baatar also does end up giving the group vital information on the colossus, which probably went a long way for him earning forgiveness.

However, at the end of the day, I think that while Suyin was angrier at Kuvira than at Baatar, she ultimately cared for them both. I don't have time to dissect Kuvira and Suyin's relationship in this post, but I do think Suyin did, want Kuvira back at her side, to some extent.

Suyin's perogative is, almost always, her family. And through the show and comics, Kuvira oscilated between family and foe. Part of me feels like Suyin's harshness towards Kuvira was more of an attempt to gauge Kuvira's level of regret. Because while Kuvira apologised several times, she did not seem to regret her actions, not as Baatar expressed.

And, to be quite honest, I also wouldn't be surprised if Suyin were just like. Acting erratically because this is an extremely difficult situation for her. She's trying to balance her roles as political leader, strategist and mother in a situation where her people and family are in grave danger. And while Suyin is good at keeping a cool head, you can visibly see her switching between those different 'personas'.

A lot of what she had built came crumbling down, which is not good as Zaofu and her family play the role of a coping mechanism of sorts for Su. Suyin probably has a lot of anger and upset, and has been thrown out of the balance she has found for herself. She's probably second guessing herself and her parenting.

I really like seeing Suyin being flawed and emotional. B4 is by far the time that gives us that of her. Suyin and Kuvira's relationship is incredibly complex and I'm going to rewatch B4 soon to give it more attention, because I feel like I need to fully focus in it.

Aang being a shitty dad is fine, but it's the way tlok makes Aang a shitty I have a problem with. You're telling me a guy who's entire culture was whipped out and whole family was massacred wasn't overjoyed at the possibility of sharing his culture with his entire family?

Would Aang have given more attention to Tenzin? Probably, them being the only airbenders would have almost certainly fostered a complex dynamic between the two— even to the extent that it would damage the father/son relationship. I think it's also worth pointing out that Aang was raised in a culture without the nuclear family dynamic we see him participarting in with Katara and their kids, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that Aang would fall short of the expectations and responibilities being a typical father figure brings especially when he himself never experienced that dynamic. Especially, especially compounded with the task of rebuilding a struggling world and maintaining peace.

However, do I think he would neglect to show his kids his culture? Their culture? No. Certainly not the extent he did, and especially not when we see how excited he is to share it with his friends in the show. Why wouldn't he be excited to share it with his kids? With all his kids? How the writers of The Legend of Korra make him a bad dad is a complex series of failures not the least of which stem from racism, the unwillingness to even attempt an understanding of multicultural families, TLOK originally being a 12 episode miniseries that then got greenlit for another season and was suddenly taxed with building upon a world that was never intended to exist beyond its original scope, and a fundamental misunderstanding of Aang as a character.

Let us begin with our steed in question: - Lightly smokey copper bay warmblood: [ selle francais x holsteiner ] - Long star on his face and dainty little amounts of pastern white - Roached mane with minimal forelock so he looks like a velociraptor - 100% constantly at the ready to kick someone in the fucking face - Well known for whipping people in the face with his tail He'd absolutely be a sporty warmblood very much crushing the 5 star eventing scene. He's bougie and sensitive and ornery. His best discipline is cross country he's got the speed, stamina, and agility, second is show jumping as he sometimes gets a bit cramped in smaller indoor arenas, and then dressage. He isn't bad at dressage he's just prone to throwing a fit when something upsets him, like he will yank the reins out of your hands if he gets annoyed with your direction or if someone's phone starts ringing he'll stop dead and look around to see who it was so that they'll feel embarrassed lolol. And as good at eventing as he is it takes him like 45 minutes to wake up so if you don't prepare early, you WILL be late.

He's the sort of horse that makes you question who owns who in this situation because if his needs aren't perfectly met he will yell and scream until someone comes to attend to him.

Bonus: Custom embroidered blanket because he will still serve tactical fashion even as a horse and also he hates getting dirty.

I really love aus and things where characters are more an amalgam of all their iterations than a static single thing. Where the characters become like people not just because of how much depth they have but based on how much and what part of someone or some work you’ve engaged with. That’s part of why I love fandom as an extension of this mindset because now the internal differences in perception of a work or character becomes tangible when a fan creates fan work with their own interpretation. While all fandom has this tendency to branch and web, the fact that multiverse stories give an internal logic that justifies noncanon stories being equally true allows so much more creativity to flourish without a reason to hold up canon above all other interpretations

- this is one of my most recent drs i’ve been scripting and not gonna lie the main reason i’m shifting here is because of my man 🤭 he cosplays gojo... so you probably know as to why but besides the point, i was raised a nepo baby and younger sister to meghan thee stallion. i am a content creator, influencer (duh), fashion designer and i live with my s/o in the upper east side of new york🗽. i scripted that my first shift will be during christmas eve because who wouldn't wanna experience the city that never sleeps during the festive season and with your partner 😩 it’s gonna be the dream. i have a mad crazy friend group but i love them all because we’re so hot, cool and sexy. i did script that megan’s parents are still alive in my dr so let’s not worry about that. 💀 i dreamt about this dr a couple of times actually and about my s/o 😍, a couple of my friends. really looking forward to this dr.

Observations, surprises, and learnings

Mostly canon pairings: Almost everyone depicted canon romantic and platonic pairings. Only 7 romantic ships were non-canon pairings, and they each had only 1 work. Not a single one was gay! 😢 (Which is motivating me to finally write that Wentworth/Brandon fic for next year!)

Mostly core Austen fandoms: I expected a lot more works from non-Austen fandoms, given how often I see people draw and write Regency AUs for every fandom under the sun, as well as original works, and given how many people from non-Austen fandoms I notified about the event! Also, not a single work was submitted related to a modern Austen adaptation, like Bride and Prejudice, Clueless, or Lizzie Bennet Diaries. I’m not disappointed by any of this, just surprised.

Very few gifs: While I love the 4 new gifsets made for the event, I was disappointed there were only 4, considering how many Austen gifsets I see made for Period Drama Appreciation Week, for instance, and how popular Austen gifsets are on Tumblr. Next year, I will make a concerted effort to contact more gif-makers. (And if you have any you’d love to see join, tell them about this blog! I only just found out about @regencysource yesterday, curses!)

Creativity boost: Several people told me that this event inspired them to start writing again after a block, or post a fic for the first time, or finish a fic they were stuck on. This was so wonderful to hear that the event boosted creators in this way! It made me so very happy. ❤️

Prompt interpretation: My goal with the prompts was that they be somewhat Austen/Regency-specific but not the standard, obvious choices like balls, dancing, proposals, etc., because those wouldn’t be very inspiring since they’re so common already. It was a joy to see the different ways that people used the prompts. For instance, Bath the place vs bath the activity, or literally hunting animals vs figuratively hunting men. And even the folks who used modern AUs found ways to make the very dated prompts like cravat and calling cards work! Bravo on everyone’s creativity!
