im not usually a fan of modern day aus of sff canons because i feel like the setting is as important to the shape and feeling of the narrative as its characters, and stripping that away by definition loses something of what made the original interesting, but ngl one of the best asoiaf fanfics ive ever read was a modern day au crossed over with rear window. i still find myself thinking about that fic sometimes lmao

#like idk most of the time when i see modern aus of sff stuff im just like... what is the point of this exactly?#especially when the characters themselves are so intrinsically tied up in the setting itself #you can't remove cersei lannister from the context of westeros and still have her be cersei lannister #but that one au... was so bizarrely satisfying to read #i think it also worked because (iirc) they made it a modern day westeros rather than setting it in our world which was very #/chefs kiss/ as a narrative choice #like i remember stannis and davos and shireen celebrating some kind of westeros faith based festival at one point???
