Okay so I went into Heartstopper expecting it to be the exact opposite to what my tumblr dashboard was shouting.
I am very shocked to discover that if anything, my dashboard was being subtle here. I much prefer this way, tbh.
Also I can’t believe the show actually said bisexual (and bisexuality) multiple times. I know technically that’s a light spoiler but it’s so fucking rare even today. I’m an old and crabby lady when it comes to how media portrays bisexuality.
Spoilers for Heartstopper season one.
Nick lives on the edge - taking sexuality quizzes but not going in an incognito window.
I won’t drag the kids too much since they’re teens but I fell out of my chair laughing at the “he’s the straightest” line.
Pfft. Meanwhile Nick is bi panicking over here. Speaking of, like I mentioned, good bisexual characters are still rather rare and a bisexual guy (especially a sporty one) is even rarer.
I’ve seen posts and fanvids say Nick has golden-retriever energy and that is a very apt description.
Also I have watched the scene where Nick comes out to his mum so many times. The first time, the show had me concerned they weren’t going to say bisexual but since they already have, I gave them a chance. Just know this scene has been watched multiple times by me.
It’s still so rare to actually have “bisexual” stated full on.
Also the acting in that scene from both Nick’s actor and Sarah’s actor is amazing. Just everything Nick does - the nervousness, the lead-in and making sure his mom doesn’t misunderstand what he’s trying to tell her. Then his face as his mum hugs him. It’s amazing.
And on Sarah’s end - did anyone else pick up the fact Sarah looks like she wants to interrupt and reassure Nick? But she like physically stops herself (look at her face) until her son has said everything.
And just “I’m sorry if I ever made you feel that you couldn’t tell me that” and the hug she gave him. I don’t even like hugs and that got me.
#ha yes finally#an actual bi character I can get behind#heartstopper#bonus points for Nick being a bi guy and a rugby player#I had Nick for like a second#but if anything happened to him#same goes for Charlie

Heartstopper, an essay by me that probably no-one will ever read. (Spoiler alert, obviously, if you haven’t read or watched the series)
(PART 8)
So it’s been a really long, shit week at work and I never got around to part 8. Frankly, I don’t think I have the energy to write much - I just want to curl up in a ball and watch ‘Heartstopper’ over and over until I feel human again. So here are just some thoughts jotted down without any real structure or expansion
Teachers, Parents, Siblings
Mr Ajayi (Fisayo Akinade) - everyone wishes they had a teacher like this. Always there with an open door and a friendly ear. Willing to give out advice even when it’s not what you want hear. Doesn’t ever push Charlie to tell him more but just creates a really open, supportive environment so that when Charlie is ready he knows that Mr Ajayi will be there for him. Wears the pride flag on his uniform so any student knows that they have his support
Coach Singh (Chetna Pandya) - strict but caring. Looking forward to hopefully being able to see the scene between Nick and her if we get a second season where she talks about meeting her partner through rugby and offering support if anyone gives him shit about his relationship with Charlie
Nick’s Mum, Sarah Nelson (Olivia Colman) - ICONIC. There is great chemistry between Olivia and Kit in the sweet scenes between Nick and his mum throughout. Such tender motherly concern and affection. The kind of supportive parent any kid wants and such a beautiful reaction to Nick coming out: “I’m sorry if I ever made you feel like you couldn’t tell me that!” *hugs* “You don’t have to say you like girls if you don’t” “Oh, I love you!” *hugs*. Love that Joe Locke has on his instagram bio that Olivia Colman is his mother in law - I mean, the dream right?
Charlie’s Dad, Julio Spring (Joseph Balderrama) - protective, sweet, there for his son. Worried about Charlie because he knows how hard things were for him at school last year and just wants his son to know that he is supported
Tao’s Mum, Yan Xu (Momo Yeung) - such a sweetie. I definitely want a cup of tea, thanks Mrs Xu. Just adores Elle and is the biggest shipper of Tao and Elle together (Keep the door open *wink*)
Charlie’s Sister, Tori Spring (Jenny Walser) - great energy and, for lack of a better word, vibe. Always a fan of deadpan. Sibling teasing but with genuine affection, love and care thrown in. Tori knows what’s up: “I don’t think he’s straight” *Charlie and Nick get together* “Called it”. There for Charlie at his lowest point: “And I just feel like maybe I do just ruin people’s lives, and it would be better if I didn’t exist” “You’re not ruining my life!” *sister hug* - such a beautiful, poignant scene and so beautifully acted by Joe and Jenny.
Nellie (Echo) - what a little sweetheart. Emotional support dog. I’m sure Echo got all the love and attention. Joe is totally jealous that Echo loves Kit more. The best doggo who deserves all the pats
Miscellaneous
Supportive friends and the concept of found family - just so important to see represented for young people. Find those who lift you up and make you shine with their love.
Rainbow motif - some of my favourite examples include: Nick and Charlie’s first meeting (camera catching the light), Tara and Darcy’s kiss at Harry’s party (lights from DJ + confetti), Tao and Elle’s sports day moment (camera catching the light), Nick and Charlie’s beach date (rainbow behind the train station), Alice Oseman drawing Nick and Charlie on the train (rainbow on her back pack)
Graphic novel elements - used to provide insight into the characters emotions/feelings throughout e.g. hearts (yes Elle, you do love Tao); butterflies (yes Tao, you do love Elle), flowers, leaves, sparks (just hold his hand, you know you want to); framing (pink for happy fantasies and black for darker imaginings). Love that even though the storyline is stretched out and rearranged a little bit (to add drama and to add a bit more realism to Nick’s journey of self discovery) there are still so many scenes that are practically shot for shot from the web comic.
Music choices - what an incredible soundtrack. The music really suits the style of the film and always helps to create the right atmosphere instead of detracting/distraction from the fabulous actors. The whole cast seems especially supportive of Baby Queen who wrote ‘Colours of You’ specifically for ‘Heart Stopper’ and who’s other music is featured throughout.
The realisation that I have the haircut of a teenage boy and I’m not even mad about it. Not a rugby lad although I do enjoy an oversized sweatshirt from time to time.
This was still really long. Sorry
Everyone deserves happiness and our differences should be celebrated!!!!!! <3
P.S. If Stephen Fry is the principal of the all boys school, does that make Sandi Toksvig the principal of the all girls school?

I love learning about people’s ocs! 🖊 for Raccoon or Heartstealer
Raccoon’s personality starts and ends at butch Mudwing (still working on her, rip) so I’m gonna talk about Heartstealer!
I mentioned this briefly in another ask, but Heartstealer’s an spy/assassin,who specifies in poisons! She was primarily sent on missions involving finding out information and rubbing elbows with the aristocracy of Pyrrhia (so a little more cloak-and-dagger shenanigans than Deathbringer). She retires pretty young though, and starts an apothecary in the Mud Kingdom instead, as well as selling poisons and other nasty things. She’s Deathbringer’s younger colleague/childhood friend/sister/rival(???) Their relationship is a little complicated. She’s a kickass lesbian who knows like 50 ways to kill a dragon without drawing attention to herself.
Appearance-wise, Heartstealer is vvv pretty by Nightwing standards! She’s definitely not a small dragon by any means, and is slightly short and plump, with strong arms and legs and a long, sweeping tail. She has semi distant Skywing ancestors, and her scales have a dusky red undertone to them. She has v pale blue eyes and tends to wear ruby earrings and jewelry. I’ve been meaning to commission art for her from @canonkiller cause their style would be so perfect for her hhhhhhhhhhh, go check them out if you haven’t already their art is off the charts cool)Her name is a little bit of a joke, on one hand it represents her beauty, but also she literally steals people’s heartbeats by killing them lol (In hindsight, maybe Heartstopper would’ve been a better name)
Heartstealer’s got some identity issues. A lot of her life has been spent doing manipulative, traumatic work that’s taken its toll on her. She’s had to wall off a lot of parts of herself to do what she does, and has gotten very good at putting on assorted fake personas depending on when she needs them. At the time she meets Viscacha in their story, Heartstealer is trying her best to adapt to normal life, without the stress of being constantly sent away on missions. Manipulation is hardwired into her, and she struggles to not slip into old habits when talking/interacting with other dragons. Outside of that, Heartstealer is charismatic and intelligence. She’s very perceptive, sometimes bordering on paranoia. Heartstealer has a weakness for the finer things in life, and is very much the kind to spoil herself whenever she can with treasure and fancy food. Outside of her job, Heartstealer isn’t actually very flirty at all, and isn’t afraid of getting her hands dirty or doing hard work. She’s very determined, and good at getting shit done when she needs to.
Her relationship with Viscacha is really a big point in her story, they’re both similar in a lot of very big ways, namely with how they approach relationships and trust. Neither of them come from very stable lives, and it takes them quite some time before they even reach the state of being comfortable friends, realizing they both love each other romantically is an even bigger hill to climb. Viscacha helps ground her, her no-nonsense attitude and honesty help stop Heartstealer from getting carried away with her own paranoia. And in turn, Heartstealer helps Viscacha with her grief and acts as a steady force in her life that stops Viscacha from becoming absorbed in her own web of negative emotions.
Heartstealer also acts as a mother to Sunrise (Viscacha and Polynya’s daughter). Heartstealer is actually pretty good with kids, and Sunrise makes her happy. She’s eager, and genuine in a way a lot of adult dragons aren’t, and Heartstealer encourages her passions and supports her emotionally in ways Viscacha is incapable of.
I have bits and pieces more on Heartstealer, but I feel like this is getting long enough, and a lot of that stuff is either things that don’t make sense to put here or are better said when talking about other characters. I hope you enjoy, Heartstealer, Viscacha, and Polynya’s story is one that really matters to me, and is really sweet. Sorry about how long these have taken to write, I’ll try to move faster in the future
