Idea for a story

so like, au where no one else has powers, but the bakers’ situation...isn’t entirely unheard of? remmy adores irene as his best friend and gets along with kardala well enough that irene trusts him to keep her from wreaking total havoc and so they’re roommates. i mentioned in a post abt crossovers the idea that kardala arrives when irene falls asleep, and vice versa, and this leads to a roommate that is awake 24/7 and “hey irene did you pick up milk?” “did you ask me last night when i was kardala, or yesterday when i was irene?” “...[sigh] last night. i’ll go get it.”

they eventually have to split rent more when kardala gets irene fired from (another) part-time job and this causes them to bring in a new roommate – nadiya – who is much less than pleased about the situation, but she’s paying for her doctorate herself and needs this conveniently-priced-and-located apartment. kardala still calls her a demon. nadiya ignores this and insists that, goddess or not, i’m not washing your dishes for you. what, do you not know how to wash dishes? can you not handle cleaning the bathroom? are you scared of the vacuum?

remmy and irene are both very grateful. buddies or not, remmy wasn’t great at getting kardala to do things she didn’t want to.

i feel like there are unpopular opinions around kardala, but i haven’t seen them. i’m a fan of irene being separated from her culture while having a piece of that culture literally living inside her bc i love stories about reconnecting with your roots, which i think is the direction her character is gonna go?

for some reason today i was driving home, and i had a thought a bazillion people probably have before me:

why in the ever loving fuck would the first response to the apocalypse be ‘let’s take the top scientific minds + politicians and hide them somewhere safe’

like, let’s play the scenario out. 

okay, they survive. most of the world is fucking it’s raining like molten metal and alligators from the sky onto the ruins of civilisation and the vague remnants of humanity...

how many of those politicians or top scientific minds would be able to live long enough to use their skills?

I mean. Can they plunge a toilet? Grow crops or even basic plants? Can they build the tech they normally use for their research? 

Do they know how to make clothes? Waste management, in a hands-on way, not just overall planning for a third party to deal with all the accumulative rubbish/shit? Can they work out how to rig up showers? 

Like, can any of them make fire without a lighter? Who can pick out which foods are safe to eat and which are poisonous if you have a bunch of robotic engineers in a room? Even if you have doctors, who would synthesise the medical equipment and medicines and sterilisation machines?

Who knows how to make/print books? Does anyone have animal handling skills? Snake-bite first aid capabilities? Anyone cut hair without looking like they just scalped a barbie doll? Can you make shoes? Anyone know how to deliver a damn baby or what herbs are safe? Who has experience with like, washing clothes by hand? Or camping or shit like that? etc.

The minutiae of the situation, really.

And this doesn’t mean ‘trap a bunch of people with specific skillsets to be fucking servants’ like, plumbers, janitors, cooks, etc. Either everyone’s equal or the survival-skilled people will go live elsewhere and laugh as the ‘world’s top minds’ starve bc they can’t work out how to open a tin can without a certain tool... you know what I mean. 

It’s just, what’s the point of preserving politicians, and top scientific minds, if they don’t have the skillsets to survive to use that knowledge. Or their abilities are technology specific. Tech that might be destroyed or unable to be used (may require power sources no longer functioning)? Who knows how to cook? Like, bread is basic, who can make it out of the survivors?

Think about random stuff like that.

Every survival show like, plane crashes or zombie apocalypses always conveniently have that one doctor + dude good with a gun and etc. but realistically, if there’s a bomb shelter full of smart people with highly specific skills/specialities... and at least half have no idea how to cope with basic things, stuff they’re used to other people doing for them without realising (eg. labs are cleaned by janitorial staff, garbage picked up by waste management staff, meals are made by a third party -perhaps cafeteria staff or you leave the lab to buy from a cafe, you order your shopping online and it’s delivered without you needing to even sign for it, etc.)

you think im kidding but let me tell you, as an historical reenactor, even basic city people will flip their shit/lose their minds at the very concept of Fire and Cooking on it. There was a year we had chickens, grown ass buff dudes ran shrieking, and kids had no idea what they were... or that eggs came from them. and these are basic, everyday people, just a step removed from having to do or think about such things bc of their location. now imagine a very rich person, a politician who just so happen to have staff for everything (eg personal assistants who do all the hard work), or a professional highly engaged in their work who just sort of accepts that people are there to do the ‘lesser work’...

let’s be real, those people exist.

you can live in fully-serviced apartments, after all, someone cleans for you. you send your clothes for washing/dry cleaning. meals can be ordered to your door. garbage just... goes. need something? order it online. don’t want to eat at home? go to a restaurant where someone will cook for you, serve it to you, and smile through any of your abuse bc they can’t afford not to deal with your shit.

Another thing comes to mind. How fragile are their inflated egos?

I mean, that one person who thinks anyone in a lesser role is inferior? Or has been praised a shitload and lost touch with reality? They don’t play nice with others. Imagine a bunker full of them. Then they get hungry, thirsty, dirty, tired, someone tells them they’re a fucking twat and it starts a child-like name-calling disaster... and sadly, there’s no kindergarten teacher in the bunker to teach them to share, care and how cooperation works.
