im reading герой нашего времени in english and while i do not agree with lots and lots of what pechorin says and does. he is after all a product of the 19th century russian imperial core. he is one of the best haters ive ever read. he calls this guy gruzhnitsky his friend from the army and then immediately afterwards he j reads his character for Filth for a full page before executing an elaborate plan to win the affection of the princess that gruzhnitsky wants to marry while not even being into her
#like i really enjoy his character as a snapshot into russian imperial society aside from him being really funny to read#like for me primarily im interested in how the main border ethnic groups are portrayed as characters#characterisation of ukrainians and circassians mainly#as well as just general caucasian and south west empire ethnicities#like the book title being 'hero of our time' the 'of our time' bit really matters because its how a hero looks to those in charge of the#country and its culture at a deeply crucial time for the russian language and its evolution#like pechorin is pretty misogynistic and he makes a comment about being innately prejudiced against disabled people#because he believes theyve lost with the bodily function a piece of their soul#anyway yeah ive been really enjoying analysing it through these lenses#im over halfway through as well!!! yaay
