lawlight: I feel like there’s nothing to say here bc it’s so obvious??? Like they’re so obviously gay and who doesn’t love seeing them be silly gay rivals?? I do think in a canon where L didn’t die they would be end game but idk how we’d go abt it *except* for like just serving time and giving up being Kira and then L and light become a thing (7/10 ship)

Lawlightmane: Shakaoshshhdkd I luvvvv this one bc I luv misa being happy and I also luvvvvvvv poly representation, however I do see light as almost strictly mlm or masculine attracted so I think his and misa’s relationship would be more like “she’s a best friend I wanna protect and keep happy so what better way to do that than being (one of) her bf(s) 🥰” like i think it would be mainly if not only platonic attraction on his side for misa, idk I can just never rlly see light w a girl, anyways I think in all other directions it would be fun and everyone would luv each other and it would be so cute (9/10 ship)

mellodramattic: once again I feel like there’s little to say bc it’s so obvious?? But they’re so cute and I luvv em and I luvv seeing em happy, although I do think they will get w other ppl for fun, I’m not sure if they do it together or if they find sumone one on one, yk however they want to be in their open relationship. mikalight: I think mikalight exists in the canon where L does die, I think he’s almost a dream replacement of L for light. I mean they’re very similar, the black shaggy hair and the sharp attractive figure the strong sense of justice and the (mainly) monotone voice and their grip on controlling their emotions their smarts etc etc. I think mikami is a version of L that light at sum point or another wanted and yet eventually he realized that he liked all of those qualities on L bc L challenged light w them, and light eventually does end up luving mikami for mikami. he still finds mikami to be his type even if he can be a bit of a sad reminder of his dead luv L, but they’ll still grow old together in a nice house (or cell depends on how u see Kira’s reign ending) (8/10)

Light for the ask game please

My otp for them: Misa/Light (x) and Mikalight. If Light never found the death note Mikami and Light would probably be able to have a healthy relationship with each other. They have so much in common.

My brotp for them: Light/Ryuk are a lot of fun together.

Any other ships: Light/Namikawa just for esthetic reasons.

Their best friend: The only person Light really cares for as a friend is probably Sayu even though he gets more and more detached from his family, the further the story progresses.

My favorite AU of them: As in Misa’s case, I like to read fics that explore what he did during the time skip and I appreciate alternate endings as well. Fics about Light’s live without the death note could also be interesting, as long as it isn’t Lawlight.

Would I date them: I should say no, but yes, I would date him.

First impression: Loved him at first sight.

Current impression: I still love him. He’s my favorite DN character. I like greyscale characters in general because they are more complex and relatable than characters you can simply put in “good” or “evil” category. Light made Death Note what it is.

With MikaLight getting to be more popular, I think that the distinction between that ship and Lawlight is getting to be more clear in an interesting way; in my opinion, it entirely depends on what kind of relationship one idealized for Light and for themselves.  The relationship between L and Light is one of competition and conflict, there is instability in the way that they resent each other for their differences in behavior and temperament but cannot deny that the other is the only person they have ever connected with on anything past the surface of their personalities.  It’s all over the place, and I think another reason why it’s popular is because they bring out the best and worst in each other; if often feels like they’re more themselves when around each other, even f they’re both putting up detailed masks and analyzing each other ceaselessly behind the scenes.

Conversely, MikaLight is appreciative, and open in a completely new way.  Misa isn’t a popular ship with Light because of the power imbalance and general incompatibility, but Mikami brings the same “partners,” or even worship-like, dynamic without it feeling so imbalanced or one-sided, despite Mikami’s obvious obsession with “Kira.”  Light and Mikami only directly interact a handful of times, and never in an ideal situation, so lots is left up to the imagination: would Mikami have seen past the Kira persona he idealized to get to know Light underneath?  Would Light have seen Mikami as more than another worshipper, as an intelligent man he could connect and agree with?  MikaLight, from what I can tell, is much more appealing to people who like stable relationship dynamics, ones that are mutually beneficial, rather than undeniably destructive.  If Kira won, the two of them could have become a near-perfect team for a very long time.

A lot of what seems to go into the decision of choosing one over the other is what Light would prefer for himself, since it’s easy to interpret conflict in what he would like in a partner.  He wants to be worshipped, and, while he is annoyed by Misa’s affection, he never seems put off by Mikami’s (this could actually be another reason why MikaLight is appealing: Mikami appears to be an “exception”).  However, with the degree of his intellect and how he cites boredom for a reason why he used the notebook to begin with, he certainly loves to be challenged, and he respects L despite the vast divide between them.  Would Light prefer a more domestic relationship with them challenging

There are, of course, other factors going into this, especially for those who factor situation/plot into their shipping more, but I think this is an interesting tell for what the individual wants in a relationship for themselves, too.

Favourite tropes:

Anything about Light’s more rather chill confidence vs Mikami’s extreme seriousness. Sure, they have some similarities but I think it’s very boring to write them as too much alike. Light is much more casual and funny, especially in the beginning, than the fandom gives him credit for. I like slightly comedic Mikalight

Light and Mikami knowing each other through a case/their work, or maybe even college. I’m not overly fond of any ship that includes Kira!Light (sounds maybe strange, but I’m not much of a shipper anyway), so I’m a sucker for more mundane AUs, actually.

Sounds like a kink - and I swear it isn’t! - but I like when Mikami keeps his, uh, more subservient nature. Mikami is still pretty independent and it’s something you can easily exaggerate, but yeah.

Honestly, Mikalight content is pretty sparse, so I have a hard time finding much about their relationship I would call a “trope” but I like it when Mikami gets to know the Yagami family. All possible dynamics sound quite entertaining to me

Oh, and I also like it when the fic highlights the differences in the ways Light and Mikami grew up. It both very obviously shaped them and I think it can make for a nice contrast or even conflict material.

A small one; I love Kiyomi and I like it when she makes an appearance as well. They are such a funny trio, haha

Least favourite tropes:

Again, non-con. Mikami never was, like, obsessed with Light’s “beauty” or whatever and, no, I don’t want to read about Mikami abducting Light to do god-knows-what.

Very popular trope but… I absolutely hate it when Mikami is like a stand-in for L. Listen, I love L to death and I can appreciate Lawlight under certain circumstances, but making Mikalight about L just takes away absolutely everything I love about that ship. It’s even worse when Mikami is only there to make L look better…

I’m also not interested in dom!Kira and sub!Mikami bdsm stories. I don’t think it’s bad or anything, just not something I find terribly interesting.

Another similar trope: Light treating Mikami like shit and getting away with it because apparently Mikami is too dumb to realise that he’s just getting used.
