No Title

Is this where I get to the heart of a so-called wedding journal? The personal stuff, the feelings, that feel really hard to share with others when it seems more appropriate, more expected, that these months are meant to be spent looking forward to wedded bliss?

So, here it is: I wanted to feel independent, financially. I also wanted to feel as much in control of wedding planning as I cared to be.

From the finance viewpoint, I wanted to feel like I was paying for my part of the wedding by myself. I know my privilege means this is even something I have a choice in, versus those I know who are have to cover 100% of their wedding expenses. Mine is 60-70%, with parents covering the rest.

I knew, from the start, about the 30-40%, but I still was not prepared to take so much money from my parents. Frankly, my dad, and the S.O.’s parents, kept paying for things that we had already budgeted for. I was grateful, but sometimes I felt like they were taking away my own desire to pay for my own wedding. Or even worse, that their payment meant it gave them a stake to another part of the wedding and I wouldn’t be able to argue.

I know, I know. Privilege. On my better days, I looked on the bright side and saw this as being able to put the money towards other things, like, giving a little more towards an area that had been under-budgeted, or for unplanned wedding expenses.

As for wanting to be in control: It’s not that I didn’t want help, but that I thought I only needed help on a task-by-task basis. Overall, I wanted to oversee tasks, to always have a handle on all costs and schedules, even if a task had been delegated. It was, and is, so important to me, I put so much pressure on myself. I think I wanted to prove myself to my parents, to the S.O’s parents, and to myself. I don’t know why. I have plenty of proof, from work and non-work examples over the years, that I am capable of organising or putting together events. For the wedding, and completely within my S.O’s and my siblings’ expectations, I set up a mind map, I set up spreadsheets, I even drew Gantt charts haha. I figured out that for each item that was being supplied or serviced by a vendor, you roughly had to (A) Research (B) Decide (C ) Make Order (D) Manage Order. Not that complex, really. I planned to delegate certain tasks, set up temporary WhatsApp groups for communication, do weekly updates with the S.O.

But I struggled, and it’s difficult to pinpoint why any of this would be hard, just that in the end, it is. Making decisions is hard. Navigating disagreement is hard. Navigating uncertainty, getting status updates or decisions out of other people, is hard. Just, trying to do it all without focusing full-time on it, which I obviously couldn’t. The day job, the side job, and the weekends I wanted to preserve. My own introversion, which means even WhatsApp chats, Instagram DMs, count as “interaction”, which I want to feel mentally prepared for.

And look, I know, you can’t follow all plans to the letter. I know. I know my spreadsheets couldn’t always match up to the reality of, say, decisions on Item X which everyone wants to give input on, and last week’s discussion is completely overwritten by this week’s, and the decision will impact Item Y which means we can’t start on it until we settle Item X.

The idea of a “bridezilla” is a joke, maybe even embraced by many brides-to-be in their planning. But now, I think many are just trying to keep costs down and meet their schedules, rather than maximise the lavishness of their weddings. A lot of the time, I had more moments of “can the backdrop be not rustic-themed" rather than moments of “the backdrop absolutely must contain 217 flowers in this exact shade”. (Except maybe with the wedding website, because websites are my jam, and I kept going back to tweak it, to perfect it.)

And family. I’ve come to realise, that a huge part of all this was having to confront my relationships with my parents. The parent I don’t really like arguing with, the parent who was okay with everything until it came to that one thing, the parent who’s hands-off but you must politely ask them anyway to be part of the conversation or else it’s rude. I can imagine this doesn’t sound like a Big Deal to some people, and maybe it’s not? But it is to me. I am the type of person who doesn’t fight with my parents, who avoids making a scene. To put my foot down, for some of these wedding decisions, was very difficult for me to do.

This is where I think one’s experience of wedding planning is personal. I cannot speak for anyone else, not even my S.O’s, who is having to face his own challenges. These are what my complexes and insecurities are like. Control. Family.

Feeling in control, for me, was getting all parties on the same page. Knowing all the costs, keeping them from being inflated by hasty decisions. Making delegations clear, trying to keep everyone involved the right amount, rather than too little or too much. Bridging communications.

Which is, y’know, hard enough in a work environment. Maybe that’s what the stress of wedding planning is: the stress of managing your family, without trying to impose work-like dynamics and structures onto them, while also making sure they get things done. On top of that, trying to get your own shit together, making sure you and the S.O. still like each other haha. (I’ll let you in on this. There would be a fight, maybe monthly, initiated by me, because I’m overthinking everything and feeling like I’m losing control. Spoiler: We still like each other.)

From the Tooth to The Long Tail - What We’ve Done and Where We’re Going

Since our launch on September 12, 2017, Tooth and Tail has seen over 100,000 copies sold, a resilient competitive community, 16 major patches with bug fixes, balance changes, and feature additions, numerous award nominations, and a growing mod community.

Looking to the future, we know we have some challenges ahead of us. Our player community is still very active via our discord channel, but the active Steam/GOG player base has been trending downwards. We still have a number of major bugs on the PS4 version. And the Story Mode content is still receiving complaints about inconsistent difficulty scaling. Let's take a quick look at the story so far and then figure out where to go from here!

We launched Ranked Season 2 on December 19th with an MMR system closer to traditional Ranked ladders. Other major developments:

We launched GOG/Steam Crossplay, which is powering development of PS4 to PC crossplay, and hopefully more platforms to come!

We've been featured in four major Steam sales (Winter, Midweek Madness, Lunar New Year, and an IGF nominee sale), a Chrono.gg sale headlined by Total Biscuit, and one major sale on PS4 (Outside is Over-Rated), bolstering our player community. You can bet that there will be more to come!

Campfires, new tiles sets, and a revamped world generation algorithm were added to ranked and unranked play.

Story Mode was completely rebalanced to bring it in line with current multiplayer balance.

ToothAndTailTV, a fan-run channel, casts a massive North America vs Europe tournament, which culminates in a final game matchup of the titans, ChipFromSpace [NA] vs ArbuzBudesh [EU]

What's Next?

With Tooth and Tail starting to enter its "long tail" life cycle, we're taking a broad approach to keeping a healthy player community.

Crossplay We're finally moving towards combining our PS4 and PC communities via crossplay, powered by GOG Galaxy. This means that anytime there is a sale on any platform, the increased player count will benefit all platforms.

Mod Support

Our latest patch (1.1.4: Eat Crow) was largely inspired by a balance mod that our player community put together. I hope that our community can continue to help us balance the game, as well as create and test new features, including new units.

In fact, a new Hedgehog unit is currently being developed and tested by community members. All of Tooth and Tail's assets are in human readable XML files and PNGs, so adding new stuff or modifying existing units is accessible to everyone.

Community Tournaments and Games via our Discord Channel

New Feature -- Standard Seeds in Story Mode

The Story Mode balance still needs quite a bit of work, and I'm determined to make the campaign be something that garners universal praise -- it's very close, but with a few things that can just ruin the experience for some people. So I plan to rebalance things again, and offer the ability to play each map on a "standard" -- and fair -- seed. I hope to add leaderboards to the standard seeds as well.

You all know that I pay a lot of attention to the game's balance and I like to tweak it. Sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the weird. Expect this to continue.

October 24, 2018: 6:19 pm: At the Club-Med terrorist Disabled People Extermination Center I went to today, where fake doctor murder real US American Citizens, they use a online, digital record keeping system as was mandated by the Federal Government some time around 2008. Every time I go to this place for the past four years, they have a "New System" they explain. I have to "update my personal information" every visit, and they never have any record that I was there in the past. Today, the system is called "Ligel", and for mysterious reasons, they  will no longer do electronic prescriptions to the pharmacy. For the past year or more, my visits have been such that a "electronic prescription" or "e-script" they call it, has been done. When they do the "e-script" the fake doctor uses a little black football shaped device that fits on a key ring that somehow generates a new, unique, secret identification code associated with each prescription that he writes. He talked about how the system was designed and set into use on the East Coast of the USA during two of my visits, and explained how the thing gets a new secret code for each "e-script". We are not on the East Coast, i told him... he just shrugged and changed the subject. That was six months ago though. Now, for the past month I am told, they no longer use that system, and they use paper "hard-copy" prescriptions now. I have a feeling that the fake terrorist doctor is pretending to be doing business all over the country, at intervals, such that every two months or so, they get a new "system" that is customary and in use in a particular state, such as New York, where he said the little black electronic device was developed. If this is so, it would explain a lot of grief that I get from a lot of different places. And, if this regional fakery is being done at the fake doctor, then, they would also have to do the same kind of fakery at the Club-Med terrorist Pharmacy headquarters at the Fred Meyer. So, the fake doctor, in league with the fake terrorist pharmacy, seem to be using regionally specific online, government mandated, digital, medical record keeping systems. This activity would cause mass confusion for the kind of national Security agents who don't do field work. It also would make it appear as though I am is two places at once, here in Oregon, and at the same time, in New York for instance. The fake terrorist Club-Med doctor has used at least ten different online, digital, government mandated electronic Medical Record keeping systems over the course of time that I have been surviving the slaughter the past four years. I asked to have a text message sent to me when it's ready, which is normal for them to do. I expected they would wait a few hours like they normally do so I went home. As soon as I parked my car in my driveway, the text came. I looked at the phone, then looked back out the front window of the car... there were about fifteen peacocks in my front yard. The bastards from the terrorist cell called "Sunflower" on Russel road put their fucking birds in my front yard, then contacted the Fred Meyer Pharmacy, told them I was in my driveway at the gate and unlocking it, and the text came in time for  me to see that they "flipped me the bird". The Sunflower Cell uses the Peacocks for terrorist activities because the Peacocks bird call is the same sound as child screaming. They bring the birds to killing events and in case someone being killed is loud and screams, they can make those birds do their bird call by exposing the peacocks with a little bit of Nitrous Oxide, and the bird screams a bird call and that covers up the sound of someone being killed and screaming. So the fucking birds were all in my yard. Also, my car did get sabotaged yesterday. I reported here that someone launched from the creek the other day who was sneaking up to sabotage my car and make it not work. Yesterday, another terrorist came and somehow got the hood open, and filled the power steering reservoir with water up to the top of the filling reservoir. When I went to go to the Wal-Mart, the car would not turn, so I opened the hood and found that there was a bunch of mayonnaise looking foam all coming out of the power steering pump. I just stuffed a bunch of rags in there and soaked it up, then refilled it with fluid, but it is still all contaminated with water and I will have to do that a whole bunch of times to get the car to turn easy. It's part of the persecution aspect of the terrorism. Chip away at the stone service.

What’s Leverage?

To leverage a position means basically that you borrow funds to be able to increase the position size in contracts while using less from your capital/margin. Depending on how you use this tool it can decrease the risk by decreasing the used capital and set funds free for other trades. At the same time, it can increase your chances of getting liquidated.

Important to note: – High Leverage = Closer liquidation price – Low Leverage = Distant liquidation price

Leverage for De-risking means: – to free up capital for trades on several instruments, like hedges – to enable you to keep less of your capital on an exchange in Seychelles.

Myth: Leveraged Trading is tied to expensive fees!

This is bullshit. The fees by BitMEX are calculated by contract size and by order type. If you buy 1000 contracts with 1x for 0.2510 BTC or 1000 contracts with 100x for 0.0028 BTC there is no difference in the charged fees. If you market buy those 1000 contracts, you will pay 0.075% of $1000 in BTC (1 contract =~ 1 USD), no matter if you used 100x or 1x – the fee remains the same. If you place a limit order you will get paid 0.025% of these contracts worth $1000 – the used leverage does not add or subtract anything from the payable fees.

What Is Cross Margin Leverage

Cross-Margin is an advanced form of leverage and a riddle to the most. However, it is easy if you know how it is calculated, but still a tool only to be used by advanced traders.

The usual leverage 1x – 100x is isolated, this means only the used margin is at risk. If you use 0.1 BTC for a trade in an account with 1 BTC the maximum you can lose is 0.1 BTC. Cross-Margin is different as it is not isolated anymore, it uses your entire balance in your account. This means a liquidation equals a completely wiped account. You cannot use liquidation as stop-loss as this means total destruction. If Margin-Cross stop-loss is a must.

Cross-Margin uses leverage dynamically and is ultimately defined by the position size divided by the account balance. This results in your liquidation price. Cross shows the ROE as if 100x was used.

Using Leverage – The De-Risking Way

Use Case 1: Free Up Capital

This is a nice method of using leverage completely risk-free: If you want to place the above example position of 1000 contracts at a XBT price of ~4000 USD, you’d place the order with 1x Leverage for 0.2510 BTC. Let’s say you go long and the price moves up $50 and you feel safe to put your stop/loss to your entry. Now you can switch the leverage to 100x without any risk! You will have the same profits, but you risk now only 0.0028 BTC for this position and you can work with the rest of it again on other pairs. Or enjoy the extra safety (like if a stop doesn’t execute). You can now lose only 0.0028 in this isolated trade, no matter what happens.

Use Case 2: Create Un-Liquidatable Leveraged Positions with CROSS

Cross has the reputation to be the most dangerous leverage option on BitMEX as it is not an isolated trade anymore and uses your whole balance. This is true – it can burn down your complete account with one major power move. However, it can also offer you the chance of leveraged positions which cannot be liquidated. The key point here is the number of contracts. Simply use the BitMEX calculator to find out how big your position can be, without any or near to no risk of liquidation. This is especially interesting for short positions, as they have a clear bottom (can’t go below zero). Now see the screenshot:

Virtually Un-Liquidatable Position

As you can see the price of XBT would have to reach a price out of imagination to liquidate my short position. With a 5 Bitcoin sized account, I can take easily a 10000 contract sized short position without risking a liquidation. On Cross, the above position would initially deduct 0.2967 BTC from my total margin and once we can bullet proof the trade with stop/loss at entry, we can go 100x if we want, using the same amount of the account. Even if we cannot get liquidated with a position like the one above, setting up a stop-loss is advisable.

Use Case 3: Catch the Bottom with Leverage

OK, this is more of a theoretical use case, a mind game what would be possible. Let’s say we assume 3-4k is the bottom of Bitcoin in the bear phase and we want to ride a long-term position all the way up again. As this is a long position the theoretical option of getting liquidated is there plus we gotta keep in mind the funding rate, – hence this is still very risky. Actually, it doesn’t belong in this post, but I found the thought interesting in theory. We would place a position, let’s say we place an order for 1000 contracts at $3.5k with CROSS enabled and a 5 BTC wallet. Our liquidation price would be $189.5 – so without stop/loss, the complete capital is still at risk theoretically. But if one would definitely want to take that gamble, this would be the way to be. O,n top he could be laddering the 1000 contracts within the 3.5k to 3k range. Once the price starts to move up, he would raise the stop/loss accordingly and once it is at the entry, he could go 100x and could ride a 100x leveraged position all the way up to 100k

Can I open a 50x Trade here?

If you see someone asking such a question or bragging about a high leverage trade, you can call him out as a noob. Why? Because it doesn’t matter and he didn’t get the basic thing:

IT IS NOT ABOUT THE LEVERAGE, IT IS ABOUT THE CONTRACT SIZE IN RELATION TO YOUR PORTFOLIO SIZE.

A person who brags about a 50x or 100x position is whether a) is maintaining oversized super-risky positions how might wick-quidated in the blink of an eye. or b) uses this with a tight stop and fewer contracts according to his portfolio size, which would make him a useless tosser.

Think Leverage Different!

Leverage is not there to offer you a BitMEX Casino, it is there to limit your risked capital. A trader should really never become liquidated – I mean like never, liquidation rate: zero. You

a) always want to make use of trades with a proper risk/reward ratio and b) obviously use a stop/loss for that.

Once you get it doesn’t really matter if you use 5x or 100x as the outcome will be the same if you calculate your position size properly in relation to your total balance.

Mi Band 3 vs Mi Band 2

The 0.78 inch PMOLED screen is quite a big upgrade from the 0.42 inch LED one on the Mi Band 2. As well as obviously being larger and able to display more information at once (more on that later), it’s a little more visible outdoors, though you’ll still need to squint or shade the device to view in the brightest of summer’s days.

The battery has been increased from 70 to 110 mAh, and Xiaomi claim that leads to 20 days battery life. That’s a reasonable estimate, but only if you don’t have constant notifications or very frequent heart rate monitoring. With heart rate measurements being taken every 10 minutes, I was getting through about 5% per day. When I enabled notifications for nearly everything (and that’s a lot of emails), it ate through closer to 10% per day. That’s still a solid week, even with the most energy consuming things enabled. 20 days estimate for most people is definitely possible.

The device itself is ever so slightly bigger to accommodate these changes. Place them side by side and you probably wouldn’t notice. However, it’s different enough that you’ll need to buy a new band, as it won’t fit in the old ones.

The physical button of the Mi Band 2 has been replaced by the fully capacitive screen. This leads to one very welcome new feature: IP67 waterproof rating, up to 50m. You can shower, swim, or hangout poolside without worry.

Setup (in Chinese)

The review model we received was in Chinese, and at the time of this review, there is no English option available. That said, it doesn’t really matter. The Mi fit app is completely in English, and the Mi Band device itself is easy to understand with simple iconography. GeekBuying have informed us that the International edition will be available later, but this Original edition will also have a firmware update in mid-July to enable English and Spanish language options. Only the packaging will vary: the device itself will be identical once the language setting is changed.

If it wasn’t obvious, this means “connect to your phone”. Also of note: the icongraphy for “phone” shows a notch in the top and no physical buttons. A sign of things to come, perhaps?

The only daunting part of setting a device up in Chinese was the initial welcome message when we turned the device on. It translates as “connect to the app”, which means download the Mi Fit app, logging in or registering an account, then adding a device. However, even after adding our Mi Band to the app, another message asked us to “open the app and update”. Even with the aid of my Chinese speaking wife, we weren’t sure precisely what that meant given that the app was already open. It turns out we needed to force close the app, and open it again. This triggered the required firmware update. From then, all the options are set using the (English) Mi Fit app.

Note: there’s also a NFC version available, which costs twice as much. Don’t buy that. It’ll only work within China using Mi Pay accounts, not Apple or Google Pay. In the US or UK, the NFC likely won’t function at all.

Navigating the Mi Band

Even in Chinese, navigating the Mi Band menu structure is really simple thanks to some obvious icongraphy, with one exception, which we’ll talk about in a moment. Here’s an overview of what you’ll find:

Main screen: time and date, as well as steps (if configured to show this). The Chinese characters display day of the week.

Status screens: steps, distance travelled, calories burned.

Heart rate tracking: manually initiate a reading by holding down the button.

Weather: today, tomorrow, and the day after. This shows high/low temperatures, and a summary icon for rain/sun etc.

Utilities: stopwatch, find my phone (looks like a phone with a magnifying glass), change watchface (a t-shirt, for some unimaginable reason), and model/version info.

Notifications: up to 5 stored which you can scroll left and right to view.

Scroll up and down to cycle through the first level screens. If the screen has more information, you can scroll left and right to access the other pages. Otherwise, selections are performed by holding down on the capacitive indent button at the bottom of the screen.

To be honest, it’s all rather obvious as long as you’re not the sort of person who will panic at the sight of a foreign language, particular one that consists largely of squiggles. The only thing I wondered about was the t-shirt icon. Clicking through to that gives you a choice of three basic “watch faces”, only one of which includes step count summary. Hold down on the button again to make your selection.

Fitness Tracking

Your steps and a basic classification of activity (light walking, standing, light activity) will be automatically recorded, but for any other kind of specified activity, you’ll need to use the app to initiate the session. The default activities are:

Outdoor running

Treadmill running

Cycling

Walking

All of those will record your route using the GPS in your phone (except for treadmill running); continuous heart rate monitoring (with a configurable alarm for maximum heart rate); and will give period updates through your phone’s speaker on how fast you were, how long the previous kilometer took, and how far you’ve travelled in total. Curiously for a device that’s waterproof, swimming is not one of the defaults.

A range of other activities can also be tagged, but for some reason these are accessed through your profile tab, in a section called “Behavior Tagging”, rather the standard activity tab. These include things like standing, eating, and having a bath. You can even add a custom activity, like “Wasting time playing Fornite BR”. For most people, this level of granularity is clearly far too much, but those interested in the concept of quantified self will find it fascinating to track their entire day.

Record exactly how long you stand for

Heart Rate Monitoring

Using an optical sensor, the Mi Band 3 will automatically track your heart rate during fitness activities and during sleep, but can also be configured for continuous heart rate monitoring at set intervals of 1, 10, or 30 minutes throughout the day. I set mine at 10 minutes to get a complete daily picture of fluctuations, as I assumed optimistically that anything strenuous I did would be for longer than 10 minutes at a time.

Whether the data is reliable or not is hotly debated. My only point of comparison is a cheap blood pressure monitor, which seemed to line up, but the accuracy of which could also be questioned. I’m not a doctor and I wouldn’t rely on this for serious heart problem monitoring, but the numbers obtained lined up with whatever activity I was doing, and seemed sensible.

On rare occasions, the heart rate sensor can fail. It works better if the band is on tightly, so you’re advised to tightly it up before an activity if that data is important to you. Generally I found it reliable, as you can see from the graphs above, there were only a few times when the sensor just couldn’t get a reading, probably because the band was too loose, or twisted round my arm.

What I drew from the information is that I don’t do nearly enough exercise to get my heartrate really up to aerobic levels or higher. I probably didn’t need a fitness tracker to tell me that though.

Sleep Tracking

Making use of the accelerometer and heart rate sensor, the sleep tracking provides an overview of your total sleep and attempts to classify how much deep sleep you enjoyed. Again, exactly how reliable this data is–particular the sleep classification–is debatable. The sleep and wake times lined up with reality though, and according to Xiaomi, I generally sleep better than 99% of people, which I’d tend to agree with.

Without wearing an EEG at night, the sleep tracking is about as good as you’re going to get from a fitness tracking wrist band.

App Notifications

The larger screen is certainly better at displaying notifications than the Mi Band 2, but it’s still not ideal. You can fit enough Chinese characters on here for a full sentence or two, but English words are less efficient. Slack messages, for example, displayed the fact it’s a Slack message, who it’s from, and the first five to ten words of the message. Email subject lines were cut off half way. You could scroll right to view the rest of it, but if it looks important you’ll probably just take out your phone anyway, which somewhat defeats the point.

But the McLaren Senna’s got game. It represents nothing less than weapons-grade performance engineering from a company with decades of experience at the highest levels of motorsport and a reputation for creating extraordinary hypercars.

McLaren Automotive engineering design director Dan Parry-Williams describes the Senna as a mashup between the P1 and the recently launched 720S, combining hardware and intellectual property from both. In simple terms, the Senna’s core structure and powertrain are derived from the 720S, and the braking system and the hydraulically modulated, computer-controlled, height-adjustable suspension are evolved from P1.

The Senna’s mid-mounted 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 features a new air intake and carbon-fiber plenum, unique lightweight cams and pistons, new sensors that allow higher combustion pressures and temperatures, and two high-flow fuel pumps. It develops 789 hp at 7,250 rpm and 590 lb-ft from 5,500 rpm to 6,700 rpm, increases of 78 hp and 22 lb-ft over the 720S engine.

Those are big numbers, especially for a car McLaren knows will likely accumulate more miles on the track than it will on the road. “Track mileage is hard on engines,” concedes Parry-Williams. “If we weren’t worried about durability, we could just keep pushing the power up, but I think we’re close to the limit of what we can get out of this engine with that kind of duty cycle.”

The engine drives the rear wheels through the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission used in the 720S, but it’s tuned to deliver faster shifts. McLaren claims the Senna will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds, but we’ve just had a 720S post a stunning 0–60 time of 2.5 seconds in our instrumented testing, so that number might be on the conservative side. Even so, spec-sheet mavens—who’ll also note the Senna’s 211-mph top speed is identical to that of the 720S—will no doubt ask the question: Why pay an eye-watering $958,966 for a car that at first glance seems no quicker than the $288,845 720S?

Two reasons: low weight and high downforce.

A truly fanatical—and not inexpensive—attention to weight reduction (see below) has peeled away the pounds: McLaren claims the lightest version of the Senna weighs a feathery 2,641 pounds without fluids. Call it about 2,900 pounds, gassed and ready to go, and the Senna is at least 200 pounds lighter than a 720S. Simple physics suggests that weight advantage, combined with its grippier, specially developed Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires and latest-generation CCM-R carbon-ceramic brakes, means it should be significantly nimbler into, through, and out of corners than the 720S.

But wait, there’s more. Selecting Race mode lowers the front of the Senna 1.5 inches and the rear 1.2 inches to optimize the carefully designed aerodynamic floor’s angle of attack on the airflow. This, the active aero blades tucked in the gaping apertures under the headlights, and the giant active rear wing towering over the Senna’s low-slung hindquarters help deliver a staggering 1,764 pounds of downforce at 155 mph. The computer-controlled aero blades and wing also automatically trim themselves to maintain that level of downforce right through to 211 mph. Under brakes the aero blades bleed off downforce at the front of the car while the rear wing moves to increase downforce on the rear axle, ensuring balance and stability.

McLaren engineers claim the Senna generates the highest downforce of any road car in the company’s history: 40 percent more than a P1, to be precise, delivering 30 percent more lateral grip though corners. “We’re looking for a car that’s agile and stable,” Parry-Williams says. “That’s the great thing about active aero—you can have both.”

The Senna’s on-track mission is simple: to turn a faster lap time than the P1. In addition to superior grip, the Senna has a 400–500-pound weight advantage and a slightly superior weight-to-power ratio: 3.67 lb/hp versus 3.77 lb/hp (those lithium-ion batteries in the P1’s 904-hp hybrid powertrain are heavy). So it’s safe to assume McLaren can hoist the “Mission Accomplished” banners even before we put our in-house hot shoe Randy Pobst behind the wheel of the Senna to challenge his own P1 lap time at Laguna Seca.

McLaren Automotive design director Rob Melville says he approached the Senna almost as if it were a piece of military equipment, designed purely for purpose, celebrating its uncompromising focus on track performance. “My approach to aesthetics is to understand the problem we’re trying to solve with the design of the car,” he says. “I don’t force an aesthetic onto a project. It should be as a result of answering those questions.”

There isn’t a line on the Senna that runs from front to rear without passing through a functional intake or vent. Viewed from above, the teardrop-shaped central form of the 720S’ cabin and engine compartment is surrounded by four sheer-sided and sharp-edged pods that are designed to optimize the airflow around the wheels and along the sides of the car. “We need quite square corners on the car because these are powerful in terms of generating the aero that we need,” Parry-Williams says. “You can fight against this stuff or embrace it.” The Senna gives it a giant bear hug. You want pretty? Buy a Lamborghini Huracán.

The uncompromising design approach brings other benefits. Improving airflow along the sides of the car and into the rear ducts allows for simpler, lighter, single-skin doors that feature what will become a signature design element of the Senna—glass panels. Made from aircraft-grade material, the panels make sitting inside the Senna an absolutely unique experience: The road is right there in your peripheral vision at all times, emphasizing how close you’re riding to the tarmac.

Whereas the exterior of the Senna is all aerodynamic flamboyance, the interior is stripped back minimalism. If you see carbon fiber, it’s structural, not decorative. To help save precious ounces, few interior surfaces are covered. Even the gas struts that hold the doors open have been left in plain view. The fixed-back seats are simply thin, carbon-fiber eggshells with seven separate, strategically placed pieces of foam attached. (They feel surprisingly comfortable.) The gear selection buttons are housed in a small carbon-fiber binnacle attached to the lower inner edge of the driver’s seat.

Whatever the Senna driver is likely to need in the heat of a hot lap is close to hand. Compared with the 720S, the central touchscreen and vehicle-setting controls have been moved higher and angled inward. The less important stuff, such as the power window buttons, has been moved to a roof-mounted pod.

Just 500 McLaren Sennas will be built, and all have already been sold, with about a third of them coming to the U.S. Is it the ultimate track rat? Well, Porsche’s stunning 911 GT2 RS currently holds the Nürburgring Nordschleife road car record with a blistering 6:47.3 lap. But the alpha-dog 911 has almost 100 fewer horses than the Senna, weighs at least 200 pounds more, and generates 43 percent less downforce at top speed. You do the math.
