Colorism
Disclaimer: I am not trying to generalize the whole population of Korea, I’m making an emphasis on SOME. also, I am not trying to go too much in-depth because I myself am not a victim of this so I don’t have much room.
some Koreans act towards South Asians like some white Americas act towards South Americans. I say this because the same things White Americans have said to me about South Americans when then they think I’m white are exactly the same things some Koreans have said to me about South Asians; they are reduced to stereotypes; like tequila drinking-sombrero-wearing-lazy-bums, and Pablo Escobar, South Asians are victims of the same. does this sound familiar? “be wary of Chinese/ South Asian men at night” “I don’t go to India because its too dangerous” “xxx idol doesn’t have the looks we Koreans like” or “she is too pretty to be from xxx country”
but this behavior isn’t just towards other countries, but to themselves as well, how some say stuff like “this person looks from XX country because their so Dark” or have you ever noticed some idols get lighter skinned as the years go by. the little girl I take care of is obsessed with the way she looks and her skin color almost twice a week she tells me “ i wish I had your hair color” “I wish my skin was as white as yours”. it’s not to toot my own horn but I have been complimented on my pale skin color, I have been told I look like Emma Watson or Amanda Seyfried and its like, thanks, they’re beautiful woman but all I have in common with them is the basic eurocentric features light hair, light skin and big eyes. but it just runs so deep, my brother in law “joking” about giving my niece double eyelid surgery, or how my in-laws always say they wish my kids look more like me than my husband. But the worst has been, again, the little girl a care for, we were talking about her trip to the Philippines when she said something like “it was really nice there, but the people are kinda ugly” taken aback I asked her why to what she responds “their skin is too dark” at that moment I am 100% sure you could see my soul leave my body, even the taxi driver looked bewildered. I did my best to explain how skin color shouldn’t be a factor in someone's beauty but I think it didn’t work. sadly some Koreans, like some white Americans only consider those countries if they serve as an ideal vacation stop, nothing else.
again I am not saying all Koreans are like this, but just enough. I don’t have a particular direction I’m trying to get at, I just saw some posts about South Asians talking about something some kpop group did and I started thinking about it. but I do want to call out fans that are always trying to excuse their idols for their ignorance, don’t do it. don’t say things like “ they probably didn’t know” Korea isn’t a secluded country with no internet access, they do know or at least they should know or at least should try to care to know, especially Idols, they travel all over Asia, of course, the should be more sensitive. call them out, tell them they fucked up they have to learn. I do want to clarify that Korea and America aren't the only countries that have this evil, Countries in Latin America like Colombia and Argentina also do the same shit. the times I've seen my old ass uncles say some colorist shit about Peruvians or Bolivians like damn, eurocentrism/colorism is a worldwide plague.
