Summary: Joel and Sarah's mom! reader the days he's conceived, written to Bruce Springsteen's The River in honor of his birthday today!

Warnings: Virginity loss for both, piv sex, skinny dipping, not a happy end, if you want the spoiler look at notes at the end. Classmate calls reader a name but its never stated so you can fill in the blank however fitting you feel, but its implied its either a slur or a derogatory word towards women. I come from down in the valley

  It started at 17, just kids. You were like something out of a dream to a teen. Well, a wet dream. You dressed so unlike everyone around him, showing off skin in a way scandalous to the bible belt you were living in. Joel was taught that impure thoughts and sex before marriage was sinful, shameful.

A year later, it didn’t feel shameful with you. 

When you moved here during yours and Joel’s senior  year, you and Joel met at a party and it was all over for him the second he saw you in that pretty black dress that dipped so low… Dark, thick curls spiraled around your head in a halo and beautiful dark skin. Joel was certain you weren’t looking his way even once. Joel wasn’t unpopular by any means, but if he were honest a lot of his circle came from either playing baseball or being Tommy’s brother . 

Tommy was a linebacker on the football team, something much cooler than baseball was. Joel didn’t think himself ugly, he thought he was decent to look at, but his nose got in the way, just planted large smack in the middle of his face. Tommy had similar features, but for some reason they meshed together better. Tommy was also just so much more extraverted, friendly as they came. And none of it was fake, Tommy was genuine and that's why people liked him. That’s why Tommy lost his virginity long before Joel had his first kiss.

When you walked over and struck up a conversation with him of all people, Joel’s eyes nearly popped out of his face.

“Hey.” You told him your name. “I start school next week with y’all”

“”M Joel,” He reached out shaking your hand, a move that made you grin ear to ear. “Nice t’meecha”

“You’re cute, Joel, wanna talk outside?”

An hour later, you and Joel hadn’t spoken to a single other soul. He watched as envious eyes lingered on them, pride swelling in his chest at having the prettiest girl at the party wearing his jacket as you sat on the porch. 

“HEY MILLER!” A teammate of Tommy’s shouts at Joel from below the porch. “Gonna finally score a homerun?”

When you looked at him confused, Joel explained the metaphor. “I play baseball.”

“YEAH AND HE’S NEVER SCORED WITH A GIRL!”

“THANKS DAN I THINK SHE GOT IT!!” Joel shouted to the jeering boy who’d drawn a bit of a crowd. When he turns back to you, you weren’t weirded about him being a virgin still, instead you were smiling.

“I’m a virgin too, don’t worry. Wanna really show ‘em how stupid they look?” You whisper.

Joel laughs, smiling something dopey. “Please…”

Swinging one leg over the porch railing, a move that spread your legs and rode your skirt up. This creates a bunch of loud whooping from everyone except Dan, more people gathering to watch the show. Joel about passed out, ready to fall off the porch and die a happy man. He didn’t, holding onto your leg as you giggled into his mouth at the reactions of everyone around them.

After that, only death could separate Joel from you.

“Hey Miller!” Dan called after him in the hall, but Joel wasn’t interested in talking to him.

That school year had been a wild one to be sure. You joined the cheer team, but admitted later it was so that you could see Joel more, an excuse to talk to him. Joel was absolutely baffled at the concept that you thought you needed a reason to talk to him after he’d kissed you, but sweet nonetheless. 

Dan had tried in vain to steal you out from under him, but to Joel’s surprise you showed no interest. After that, he got mean. Joel frequently found himself telling Dan to shut the fuck up, defending you even though the relationship still didn’t have a name. It was stolen smiles in class, study dates, choosing to spend your 18th birthday with him at the local diner instead of a party.  DIdn’t matter. He wasn’t going to let Dan talk the way he did about you. It’d never escalated to more than a few shoves in the locker room, resulting in being separated by Tommy and your teammate. Their coach said if Dan causes more problems to let him know.

And then, Dan crossed a line. The crowded hallway was loud, people pushing around to get the hell out of school and onto their next event but Joel heard him loud and clear. The hall got real quiet, everyone between Dan and you and Joel hearing with Dan called you, and it was over. 

“Joel…” You warn, feeling him squeeze your hand tighter. “Don-” but he was gone, letting go and lunging at Dan like he was tackling in a game.

The fight didn’t last long, Joel a little better off than Dan was by the time they were pulled apart, which is why the coach suspended Joel for 2 days instead of Dan. They told the coach, multiple students testifying, what Dan had called you but he never go any repercussions. That just makes Joel all the more happy he broke his nose.

You were his after that. Officially. Boyfriend and girlfriend and inseparable. Every game, you were there cheering him on and every night you worked he was there to walk you home. 

When the summer turned warm, Joel decided he wanted to share something special with you.

It was a secret spot, a place Joel grandpa used to take him and Tommy to fish before he passed. They pair had grown up swimming there when they could get their hands on a car in the summer, and it was somewhere that few people knew about. A quiet lake, the perfect place to fish and swim or just relax. Joel managed to borrow your brothers car, people trusting him as he was responsible, unlike Tommy. He even packed you a picknick, making it a nice date. He knew he was romantic as shit. He didn’t plan on what happened happening, but he knew it would be a special afternoon.

The week after graduation in Texas was already warm, the world bright and happy around him as college approached. You and him had plans to move to Austen together, he had gotten a few good grants for low income students and was going to attend the tech school, get into electrician work. He even knew a place where he could apprentice in the city, and hopefully by the time you graduate with your 4 year degree he would have his journeymans. You had gotten an excellent scholarship, and between that and the money saved from the last few years of both of you working, if you guys budgeted well you would graduate almost debt free. Then, find permanent jobs, get a house, get married, have kids… the entire world was in the palm of your hands.

You hadn’t taken the big step, even after 7 months of dating, you were still virgins. You wanted to… but where? On the bottom bunk of the bunk bed Joel and Tommy still shared in the tiny mobile home? Or at your place, where your mom made you keep the door open at all time? Joel certainly wasn’t going to deflower you in the back of a car, he wasn’t a fucking animal. Still, he liked to think what ended up happening was perfect.

“Joel!!!” An excited squeal escaped your lips as he finished setting everything up. There were even a bundle of wildflowers on the blanket he sprawled out on the grass. 

“M’grandpa used to take me  n’ Tommy here ‘fore he died.” Joel explained, standing up and stepping back to admire his work. There was a tinge of longing, reminiscing on those old days, childhood that he was soon to leave behind for a life with you. There'll always be nostalgia, but he didn’t have to fear facing the future with you by his side. He’d do it all in your honor. Joel felt your hand on his back.

“He sounds great, baby.”

Joel smiled. “Yeah, he was.” But he turned to hug yo. The smell of your hair was always something he took his time to appreciate. Throughout these months, he’d learned a lot about taking care of your hair, and absolutely adored the smell of coconut oil. He'd gotten pretty damn good at braiding. Sometimes you’d even put the oil in his hair, and Joel loved the scalp massage too much he was practically purring. That’s how you learned he had a sensitive scalp. Very sensitive.

Got anything to drink?” You smiled, trying to distract him.

He paused for a bit, then finally smiled for the first time tonight. “Yeah, yeah I do.”

Joel pulled out the glasses, iced tea, rum, and sliced lemons; Long Island iced tea.

Joel insisted on holding the ice to your lip as You sipped through your straw and drank his own. Joel was more of a beer guy himself, the guys would never let it go if they caught him drinking this, but for your, he’d drink it. Plus, it actually tastes good. Beer does not.

Now, Joel was Joel again. He laughed along to your stories and shared quips about the guys at the shop as they sat on the blanket he laid out by the banks. He braided your hair back for you, tying it up nice and tight so the river water doesn’t ruin it.

“You ready to swim?” You asked.

Joel grinned “Absolutely. I brought some spare clothes, I figured you couldn’t exactly sneak out with swimwear.”

“Actually…” You stood up. “I was thinking we could just…” You took off your shirt. Joel quickly stood up. “Skinny dip?” 

Joel had felt your tits before. Plenty. You and him had explored things before… but never this. Seeing your breasts in that bra had his mind short circuiting. He was only a man.

You turned to him with a broad smile. “Joel! That’s so sweet” You took him in for a kiss as the opening chords started playing, your dark, naked body pulling up against him.

Joel stood up and gathered your clothes that You had practically stripped off for him, then got dressed himself.

It was that July you told him you were pregnant.

And for my nineteenth birthday

I got a union card and a wedding coat

We went down to the courthouse

And the judge put it all to rest

No wedding day smiles, no walk down the aisle

No flowers, no wedding dress

Everything changed after that, 

Not the love you had for each other, no, not that.

Your parents kicked you out when you told them, and Joel’s family let you move in, kind enough to let you take the couch, until a week later you and Joel were married at the courthouse. You spend your wedding night on the bottom of a bunk bed, Tommy staying with a friend for the night to offer you some privacy.

Life wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t the worst. No trade school, no apprenticeship, no journeymans, but Joel found a union job which was good. You continued working your job at the diner until Sarah was born, the best day of Joel’s life.

The next 5 years would be difficult, late bills and a sick baby, union going on strike, but no matter what, he had you. Always had you, his beautiful girl. Sometimes, Joel would ask Tommy to watch Sarah for a few hours, and he’d take you back to the river, back to where she was conceived. He couldn’t say he regretted it, but when this life brought him his baby. He couldn’t regret anything with you, honestly. Every struggle was worth it for his little family.

It was here you told him about the cancer.

Now all them things that seemed so important

Joel watched as a preteen Sarah swam around the river, Tommy and Joel parked with chairs close enough their feet were wet. Joel supposed she was technically a teen now… but it felt wrong to say his baby was a teenager of all things. 13 could be a preteen, just one more year. He had braided her hair back the same way he always did yours, the memory of which always tore at his chest. There were a few years there he didn’t take her, the last time Sarah had been was when she was 6.

 The chemo had taken its toll on you, but you wanted this last summer with your daughter. Joel had carried you in, your body to weak to stand for long but once you were in again, you were at ease. The water helped you move, taking pressure off your joints and Sarah, as little as she was played gently with you, knowing her mom was fragile. Joel loved how much you loved her, how much Sarah adored you, and it killed him. It killed him to know there wasn’t much longer left. 

Joel watched as you floated, taking in the sun on your skin as Sarah did the same. Two peas in a pod.

You died two days later.

But I remember us riding in my brother's car

Joel didn’t take her again until she was 10. He couldn’t stomach it, so Tommy did, wanting to keep the family place alive.

“You alright, brother?” Tommy asked, cool beer in his hand.

Joel sighed. “Yeah, yeah. Just….” He shook his head, watching as Sarah went under to do a handstand. “She looks so much like her mom, doesn’t she?”

When Sarah popped up again, Joel and Tommy cheered for her in encouragement.

“Yeah, that she does.”

School was starting soon, and Joel would have less time with her, so he was savoring these little moments, just as their family. Just the three of them. Joel still felt you here, present with him in these ways, even after all these years. 

2003 marked 7 years since your death, and every day Sarah grew to look more like you.

My first impression: i didnt like him in the first half of tg tbh but then i when i saw him in re i was OBSESSED i love when theyre insane but yeah now he’s probably my second or third fav after urie ofc 🤞

My impression now: as just mentioned he’s one of my top fav characters. i alternate between having silly goofy thoughts about him and the most soul crushing devastating sad thoughts. i have a weak spot for characters who always come second (urie w takeomi, mello w near…) so yeah i love him

Favorite thing about that character: character design in the manga specifically, also i love when they’re insane also i love when a character constantly comes in second and feels inferior even though theyre doing perfectly fine. he’s so me fr

Least favorite thing: character design in the anime specifically. was so bland compared to the anime. also i’m of the opinion that the re epilogue was a hallucination, but if it wasn’t i think he deserved at least an attempt at redemption. i don’t think he would just be able to give up on himself and live in the shadows without at least a bit of nagging from amon and akira, maybe even kaneki

Favorite line/scene: when he first showed up in re, i was like omg who’s this psycho and then i realized it was takizawa and i was like kicking and screaming (quietly bc it was like 2-3am) bc i was like damn thats so cool of him fr. also when he wrote his testament before the anteiku raid…devastating

Favorite interaction that character has with another: when he was so worried about akira while she was recovering from the injuries she sustained trying to protect her…he seemed so young in that moment idk

A character that I wish that character would interact with more: amon post ghoulification. i would also want to see his reunion with juuzou after everything bc i feel like juuzou would just be like “oh hey long time no see” and takizawa would be like ???

danny + sam + tucker are at the mall and theyre making fun of the overly feminine advertisements. tucker sees a line of black lipstick and is like "hey sam this is kind of your color" but before sam says anything danny jsut goes "PSH shes not a GIRLY GIRL, tuck, she doesnt want any lipstick" and sam goes "hahahaha. yeaahhhh". paulina + co are at the same store and the group turns to making fun of paulina for buying out all the makeup in the entire mall. paulina makes fun of sam for being unable to dress herself and being unpopular

tucker + danny head out of town to an academathlete conference -- tucker to compete, danny because jazz is going to the same one and he wants to keep an eye on her (seperate episode premise) -- leaving sam as the "sole protector" of amity park. insert "do you think you can handle it?" [looks over at paulina twirling in a pink dress] "please. i'm more focused than SOME girls."

sam spends most of the week performing mean spirited pranks against paulina. eventually lancer receives an anonymous tip (read: from paulina) about what sams done to her own locker (black spray paint, spiders, etc) and she gets relocated to a new locker while the school fixes the damages.

sidney is haunting the locker, and sam ends up releasing him - but instead of trying to take over her body or anything, the two end up bonding over how much they hate popular kids. sidney apparently used to want to woo this popular girl in his class (her name is barbara), but she essentially spat in his face and mocked him for being such an unpopular loser.

so sam + sid team up to absolutely ruin the popular kids lives and this turns into a violent and destructive prank war. it ends up that the severe property damages land both paulina and sam in saturday detention, where they will be forced to clean the school top to bottom, all on their own.

well, school's haunted. the power goes out and sam + paulina have to work together to figure out how to turn it back on, while the school continues to fall apart around them.

turns out paulina can do backflips and took an electrical engineering summer camp and is actually pretty competent, which blows sam for a loop bc she thought that pink dress girly girls were all pathetic, but THIS pink dress girly girl can also do hypermasculine things, so her respect for paulina grows (but in the wrong direction)

sam recognizes some of the "hauntings" as sidneys pranks and they go to confront him, where hes like. hahahahhahaha you all fell for my elaborate scheme or something. and then hes like sam look i can trap all the popular kids in the mirror dimension and we can be free of those assholes forever but sams had a character grwoth by now and is like "dude thats murder." so they both get trapped. and sidney smashes the mirror.

they think theyre stuck there forever so while theyre trapped there they have a heartfelt talk where sam is like. paulina... i thought u were stupid and girly.... but actually youre very smart and kick ass. youre Not Like Other Girls. and paulina is just like yo what the fuck? is that your criteria for me being a good person is how much i act like you?

anyway barb is also in there. paulina is the only one who can get her to talk bc barb is like. this sam character is rly mean and misogynistic i will only respect a fellow queen. we learn that sidney was never actually a pathetic bullied nerd but in fact he was an asshole who thought he was better than everyone else because he was smart and read books and everyone else was an idiot who liked fashion.

if you want lore; the reason sidney + a bunch of kids are trapped in a mirror dimension is bc amity park (and casper high) were being threatened by a ghost invasion, and sidney invented multidimensional travel in order to save everyone. hes very pissy that people dont regard him as a hero for trapping them in grayscale land. this also foreshadows a later episode where casper high does in fact get destroyed

so I've got a somewhat unpopular opinion and I wanna know if other also see this or I'm just crazy

But ..... Stiles had every right to be the way he is towards Lydia in s4.....

Hear me out. I haven't finished all of s4 yet, it's been hard to watch tbh. So I don't know everything, but I've read a lot of people talk about the hate it because Stiles acts indifferent towards Lydia (except for the special episodes) and honestly doesn't even act like himself.

Well.... did Stiles NOT just go through a very traumatic experience....? The thing is yes I would have LIVED for Lydia being there for him and Stiles leaning into her even more but the thing is... I love Lydia so don't take this the wrong way but... when it comes to Stiles she was kinda bitch about the whole friendship.

Lydia was SELFISH when it came to Stiles. But in the worst ways for Stiles. Throughout the show we see Stiles do absolutely ANYTHING for Lydia. No matter what he would have dropped it all to be there for her. Yet, we also watch Lydia run away whenever Stiles is hurting. Most of s3 when Stiles is struggling with the nogitsune, Lydia is running the other way. She helps yes, but she also runs. I believe it was because she was very connected to Stiles, implied many times, to the point that her Banshee abilities made her very intune with Stiles' pain. I think this scared her, because Lydia was afraid of a real commitment with Stiles.

Lydia clung to Stiles every time she needed the emotional support, the shoulder to cry on, the hand to hold. But when he needed it? She was hardly there for him.

Stiles also made it very VERY clear his feelings for her, and Lydia was never one to be shy about her feelings in past relationships. I do understand it being different because they were best friends, but that wasn't it. Lydia just didn't want to admit her feelings for him. She was afraid of committing because she didn't want to get hurt

In s3a Lydia does not kiss Stiles because kissing him would hold his breath. She kisses him because he's in pain and she doesn't know what else to do but she can't stand watching him hurt. Lydia loved him, and as confirmed in s6a, she realized it in that moment.

Lydia realized she loved Stiles in s3a. Yet she chooses to be with Aiden, a guy she says on numerous occasions is not a good guy and she doesn't want to be with a bad guy. We also find out through Stiles (also implying how close they were in s3 and makes my heart hurt that we didn't see it all) Lydia talked to Stiles about Aiden. She talked to the boy who she loved, who she knew loved her, about her freakin kinda boyfriend. Because they were best friends yes, but it also had to hurt to be Stiles. Sitting there, listening to the girl who've loved since a kid talk about the guy she chose over him.

And then Stiles meets Malia. I honestly don't think Stiles even liked her that much at first. But she cared about HIM. Malia showed Stiles the kind of commitment and love that Stiles never received.

Stiles was giving and giving and giving and and never receiving. That's who Stiles is. He was the giver, and everyone always took and hardly gave back. Geez thats a huge reason why he even became the nogitsune in the first place! If Scott or Lydia or Allison had stopped for 5 seconds and said, "hey Stiles so these nightmares maybe we should help you before things get bad" but instead it was Stiles helping everyone else and him just grinning and bearing it.

So yeah, he chooses to be with Malia. Why shouldn't he??? She literally tells him in s4 premiere that she would never leave him. Stiles is TOUCHED by this, as if he didn't know what that was like. He the looks back at Lydia and at first I was like "ew he wants to see if she's jealous" but then I realized ... he was probably thinking "would Lydia care that much about me?" And Lydia's reaction is once again, running from feelings and acting like she couldn't care less.

What I'm saying is Stiles deserved better than what Lydia was giving him. She was stringing him along, no intention of romantically being with him, so he chose someone who would choose him too. Could this have changed if Malia never came in the picture? Maybe, but also irrelevant because should not have to wait on being happy because Lydia wasn't ready for a relationship yet.

I am a hard-core Stydia shipper, don't get me wrong, but I love that Stiles chose someone who chose him rather than waiting around for Lydia to decide when she would kiss him again and then give another excuse like "oh it was for you."

Stiles choosing to be with Malia was GROWTH.

Lydia acting jealous and hurt when he chose Malia over her is valid, but I also find it so frustrating because she had Stiles for sooooooo long. That look Stiles gave her in the car, when Malia said she'd never leave him? That was Stiles STILL making it clear that he would date Lydia in a heartbeat if she just SAID something. But she chose to look away.

Stiles simply tried to graduate from Lydia's lap dog and ya know what? Lol it kinds worked. Yes they became distant for a little while but I think that's for the best. This showed Lydia how much she really loved and needed him, and it grew Stiles as an independent human that learned to love and respect himself (and vice versa).

I also think this s6's original intentions probably going to be actual progress in relationship between the two. If Dylan hadn't had to be gone for so long, I think s6 would obviously had a constant Stiles and I think we would have seen new Stydia moments where they were both single and ready and go from best friends to something so much more. But sadly, we didn't get that opportunity, and I also think the show did an amazing job with what they had to work with.

I also appreciated that they showed us through s6a how much Stiles did mean to her, and showed us Lydia finally fighting for Stiles like he always fought for her. It was what Stiles DESERVED.

First impression: ok so when i first watched fma when i was like 13 i went in completely blind knowing absolutely NOTHING about it so like, al comes in, massive suit of armor, and i'm expecting him to have like a deep burly voice and then he talks and it's this little kid voice and it threw me OFF. besides that i thought he was just a tad boring

Impression now: I love al SO much you have no idea, both versions of him. i really love his persistent kindness and politeness esp as a contrast to ed but also his ability to be super like snarky and passive aggressive? he's just not a typical shounen hero. in 2003 he's literally SUCH a complex character and it drives me crazy really to think about it.

Favorite moment: there's so many great Al moments but there's this one scene in the manga i think? where ed had been beating up shou tucker and al pulled him off of him and tucker was still talking shit so al gave him this like death glare and said something like "hey if you don't stop talking I'll fuck you up" and it was just such a sudden moment of intensity and it subtly spoke MILES to al's character and personality

idea for a story: idk maybe his travels in xing? a story about him basically getting to live his life and make up for lost time since he lost basically his entire adolescence to the whole armor situation

unpopular opinion: i actually don't think he'd ever settle down and have kids like ed, he seems like just the type to be good with kids but not WANT them. i think he spends his life as like the cool uncle and that he takes after hohenheim more in that respect. in general i think al is more like hohenheim than ed is (v unpopular opinion i believe)

Rebeccaaaaaa she's the unpopular girl, just started school and doesnt know shit about it after being homeschooled almost her whole life. Has a little crush on Estella, but Estella "Doesn't" notice her. (Estella just thinks of her as some pretty girl who isnt worth her time) Rebecca usually keeps to herself, is usually gossiped about. Estella never gets involved, but whenever she'd get asked about it, instead of defending Rebecca she just says "I hardly believe any of the rumors. She was homeschooled, not taught in witchcraft or satanisim. Or whatever else everyone's saying. Everyone should really calm themselves, if they were so worried about what people thought of them when Rebecca started going here then they should get that in order first before ruining Rebecca's social life. God. You all have to grow up." So, not necessarily a defense but also not an insult. Rebecca still finds it sweet.

Mark is a neerrrrrrd 80s main character. Minus the popular love interest and yearning 😩 And also if the main character had a god/superiority complex.. he's bullied the most other than Gregory, mostly by Damien n Christophe. Girls don't like him, guys don't like him, he really only had Pip and Rebecca for a while. Pip because he's overly nice to almost everyone and wanted to befriend Mark immediately. Usually during lunch Mark sits with Pip and Rebecca. Mark has to hear about Damien all the time from Pip though, so that's annoying.

Uh I know that Pocket is TECHNICALLY a foreign kid but idk shit about him and dont really think about him but he's Estella's cousin and often hangs out with her since he doesn't really have a friend group. He's also really good friends with Pip. BUT since this is a horror au he dies off early

After theyre all friends some stuff happens yada yada yada Gaymien realizes he's pan and has a crush on Pip, Estella takes Rebecca out for a makeover , Christophe gets severely injured because this is a horror au as well, Damien and Pip make out at some point-

Kinda thinking of this as if it was stranger things or something so i definitely want there to be like... a series of bad events. everyone thinks everythings cool and fine and whatever and there are moments where our group kinda just get to chill n' be kids. idk i just want there to be a falling out in the group and then they all realize they need each other or something dumb like that

also for some fun chill moments we can have estella and rebecca walking around holding hands and laughing n' stuff bc they love each other idk idk

and after the falling out when they all join together again estella is the first to see some scary stuff but she was also the first to drop everyone except damien and christophe (because of her mother) and so she blames herself and doesnt think she can go to them and just has to deal with it on her own

eventually she tells damien who immediately tells pip who immediately wants to get the group together again

everyone's (the cockswolds) are reluctant to hang out again because of the way they were just forgotten so easily, but they go anyway. because of the horror stuff. they both are pissed at estella though

at some point estella gets badly hurt and rebecca saves her and starts nursing her back to health

estella: why are you... why are you doing this. dont you hate me?

rebecca: i'm doing it because i actually care for you, idiot.

damien and estella come out to each other first. well- damien doesnt really come out he just tells her how confused he is and they hug it out and estella tells him she's a lesbian and they both talk a little while longer and decide that breaking up would be the best idea

Steelbeak is my 2nd favorite villian from DWD. He was a more cool headed villian with style, charm and sarcastic. A very spy fitting villian and he just offers this good counter to Drake who is much more short tempered. And I like the way the DWD version talks and carries himself. Like this guy is cool and he knows he's cool. Even the music for him is just so good.
