#like he was conducting an orchestra when the invasion started

As per usual youâre taste in classical is đĽ. Not good at putting it to words but the symphony felt vibrant and I enjoyed listening to it all come together. Favourite piece had to be âAdagio â Largo â Moderato risoluto â Largo â Adagioâ made me jealous that I couldnât witness it live đ.
â Penalanon (also seeing the side by side with the conductor on yt , I can see the resemblance lol)
Hehe you don't know much it means to me everytime you tell me you've listened to my reccs!!! <3 Also omg, I would literally die if I ever got to see this one live. I's my absolute favorite right now!! I think though, thankfully, I'll get to hear one of his other symphonies, the 5th, which is also pretty great! He really does look so much like Shostakovich, doesn't he??? So funny.
I love the whole piece dearly, but my favorite is definitely the first movement, because the way it ramps up is so adrenaline filled and makes me feel so much palpable emotion. Also the context behind it, which was what the book I was reading was about(Symphony of the City of the Dead by M.T. Anderson, which I highly recommend!!) It's just crazy to think he was writing the first two movements while the Siege of Leningrad was actively getting worse and worse(thus why it's referred to as "Leningrad.") I think he even marked the original score every time he had to go into the bomb shelter, which is so insane. Knowing that context, the whole first movement makes my heart drop and I can just FEEL the tension he probably did writing this. That repeated melody, which is basically Shostakovich's version of Ravel's Bolero, in the beginning is referred to as the "Invasion Theme," so it's really so easy to picture the approaching of the army, getting more and more tense until it comes to a fever pitch(though you can also interpret this piece as being about fascism/authoritatianism in general, i.e. Stalin and The Great Purge OR Hitler and Operation Barbossa.)
AGHHHH god, and thinking about how when he finally finished it, the city of Leningrad itself(which he thankfully managed to evacuate from before it got too bad) was desperate to play it, even though everyone was dying from starvation. They were collecting literally anyone who could play an instrument to be able to play it, even though it required a huge orchestra and was long as hell. I want to cry just thinking about that premiere, how everyone was so grateful to finally feel human and creative again in some tangible way through music(lol so you can see why I'm so enthralled with this piece.) And the fact they even played it over loudspeakers as a sign of resistance to the Germans !!!! It's a very emotional piece to think about, and I start tearing up every time I listen to it, thinking about all of this. Every bit is packed with emotion so it's hard to even express what parts I like specifically, cause I love all of it! Though here's a fun fact, they almost lost this piece!! Shostakovich and his family were evacuated further East from Moscow, and in the confusion, they lost the score he had composed so far(I think the first two movements), but managed to find it on the train, miraculously unscathed. It stresses me out to even think about.
Also since I've got you here, here are some more reccs >:)
Jazz Suite No. 1 & No. 2 - Shostakovich
These are so whimsical and fun! But they also kinda make me sad when I remember this is the kind of fun music he liked to compose before the government practically beat all the fun and whimsy out of him. But, still, the duality of man, I guess?
Piano Concerto No. 2 - Shostakovich
Spotify link this time, sorry lmao. I wanted to share this recording specifically because there's a lot of signifigance in it. The fact that it's his compositon, which his son is conducting and who it was written for in the first place, and his grandson is the one playing the piano!!! The second movement is especially so good omg
Scherezade - Rimsky-Korsakov
Soooooo incredibly cinematic for its time!!
Symphony No. 3 "Organ Symphony" - Saint-SaĂŤns
I saw this one in concert the other day, so I should link it lol. I'm so happy when the organ gets used, there's nothing like it, it's so loud!!
La valse - Ravel
Ma mère lâOye - Ravel
I've been listening to Ravel the past few days, and wow, his music is so magical so I thought I should link some!!
Dies Irae - Verdi
Piece I am going to tomorrow !! Requiems are so cool, you should also listen to Mozart's, but I'm sure you're familar with some of it. This kind of chorael singing rips at something deep in me
Japanese Suite - Holst
*adding this late so I hope you see it! Literally randomly heard this rn and I had no idea it existed. It's crazy how good Holst is at giving the vibe of something. This was composed while he was working on the Planets, so it still has a space vibe but also reminds me SOOOOOOO MUCH of Inazuma's soundtrack, it's insane. I know it's probably because they're both based on traditional Japanese music, but still, wow. Holst truly is the creator of the modern soundtrack imo.
#history lesson and some reccs dlkjfld#guys can you tell I really like the 7th symphony??????#put more work into this than the paper i have to write today lmfao#catie.asks.#I really need a classical music and/or history tag atp

Still getting over a cold.
The Republicans say they have found the man who will give important evidence for impeaching Biden. The plan fizzles and Jim Jordon, cornered, tries to salvage part of the story and starts chattering like a monkey.
Trump considering vice presidential candidates. DeSantis appears on the short list. Even after being insulted he would be made to grovel, to bow down before the cult leader.
But...a bit later...DeSantis says no. He's more interested in the Big Prize and is willing to wait four years to give it a shot.

Note: When I told Dan Block I played "Sinfonia India" last Sunday he came up with a great story about Bernstein conducting it at Juilliard. The student orchestra...Bernstein wearing a dashiki (!)...chain smoking (of course)...and probably a bit drunk. That was Lennie. Bigger than life.
Elaborate dream about a difficult piece I am to play. The music (very hard to decipher) comes with a CD and a blooklet, explaining what the work is about. All of this quite odd and unsettling.
Note: The dream brought to mind Tom Wolfe's "The Painted Word." Content in inverse proportion to explanation.

Other possible Republican vice presidential candidates (now that DeSantis said no): Tucker Carlson, Kari Lake, Vance, Elise... Trump is enjoying this. The ass-kissing especially.
OMG. Alabama Supreme Court has ruled that embryos are children.

Trump wins over Haley (by a lot) in South Carolina. But Haley has not yet quit the race. Super Tuesday is coming.
So hoping to get rid of this persistent cough.
Interesting piece in the N Y Times. It is estimated that 44 per cent of the population doesn't bother to vote. (Do all of the Trumpers vote or are some of them just in for the show?)
Trump makeing speech to Blacks. Says he, like them, is discriminated against. He brings up the mug shot ("Never Surrender") and the indictments. Another appearance shows him kissing the flag. This is beyond bad taste.
Putin's invasion of Ukraine reaches two year mark. Estimated loss of Ukrainian soliders (so says Zalensky): 31,000.

OOC INFO
Name + pronouns: Ace + she/her/it Age: 32 Timezone: CST Ships: Elijah/Cello Solo, Elijah/The New York Philharmonic Anti-Ships: Elijah/Forced
IC INFO
Full Name: Elijah Elise Love Face Claim: Dewanda Wise Age/Birthday: 29/Nov 11th Occupation: The Chelsea Symphony (Cello), Personal Music Teacher (Cello/Violin/Viola/Bass), Always Preparing for a New York Philharmonic audition Personality: Stubborn, guarded, protective, independent, compassionate, nurturing Hometown: North Bethesda, MD Bio: When politics is the family business, there are always heavy expectations on every member of said family. And that old adage is true, image is everything. Even before the invasive nature of social media, proper conduct in every public setting wasnât a suggestion but a written in stone rule. Katherine Thompson and Michael Love both grew up in families that had some hand in the political world. From advisors to lobbyist to congressman. These two families traveled in important circles, so it was no surprise to anyone when Kate and Mike found one another. The match was pleasing to their families, to say the least, they looked good on paper, a couple of lawyers headed for the senate. It was a perfect match, it was just lucky for the pair theyâd actually fallen in love with one another.
The outside view of the pairâs life was picturesque. They married, practiced law at separate but equally prominent firms, before both throwing their hats in the political ring. Michael hated every minute of all of it, but there were those pesky expectations to live up to. Katherine, on the other hand, thrived. She was meant for that world, not simply breed for it. Katherine was a rising political star.
Elijah Elise Love came at the complete wrong time but she was adored, especially by her father, he doted completely. Three years later one little Evelyn Anissa Love completed the brood. Michael took to fatherhood immediately, and it wasnât long before he decided to take a job at a small nonprofit and help support his wifeâs political career by being the primary caregiver to their children. He had finally found his calling, husband and father. Music lessons, dance recitals, elementary school bake sales, he was there for it all, and never made his wife feel an ounce of guilt for missing most of it. He was his girlsâ whole world, until that fateful day when being at the wrong place at the wrong time turned that world upside down and ended a life.
A young Elijah wanted nothing more than to make her mother proud. The loss of her father left such a hole, and  though she was aware she would never be able to fill that space for her mother and sister she could portray the image everyone wanted to see, perfect dutiful daughter. When her mother went back to her office Elijah kept up appearances at school and helped take care of her little sister. At first she was all too happy to do it but over time it became suffocating. The one thing that gave Elijah solace when things got too difficult or her anxiety was too high was music. The girl was a natural with every instrument she tried, a favorite of every private music tutor her mother sent in, but there was something magical about the strings, especially the Cello. It was large and she felt powerful wielding it. Being the perfectionist that she was, Elijah practiced whenever she had a free moment, and that along with her natural musicality made for something like a prodigal experience.
While the widowed mother of twoâs political star continued to rise, her actual presence in her home became more sparse. She always made time for them when it was time for a photo-op, Elijah noted, but her mother couldnât be bothered when it really mattered. Evelyn needed someone to be there and Elijah was it. She checked homework and made snacks for sleepovers, and braided hair for special occasions. At the tender age of 14 Elijahâs Cello instructor presented an opportunity for her to attend Interlochen Center for the Arts. Elijah decided to turn it down, without so much as a mention to her mother, because if she were gone who would take care of her sister? Though it was a choice she began to have feelings of resentment, and though she never took that out on Evelyn, Elijah found small ways of rebelling. She got her nose pierced, died her hair blue, she was certainly not what her mom considered photo-op ready any longer. It also made for a few issues in her school orchestra performances, but when you were as great as Elijah, you couldnât be denied. Â
High school was a continuous battle for Elijah and her mother but eventually, while the teen experimented with looks and hung out with âquestionableâ associates her mother didnât approve of, they found ways of compromising. As long as her mother didnât restrict her music, she would make it work, for her sisterâs sake. In the end she was still that responsible perfectionist who deep down just wanted to make everyone proud, as much as she fought against that fact. Â
After months of rehearsal and a fairly intense application process, Elijah was accepted to Juliard School of Music, continuing her love affair with the cello, and still remaining close enough to home, to get to her sister whenever she was needed. The new found freedom away from the public eye was an awakening for her. New experiences unhindered by persona. She could breath, and she could be asked out by the girl who sheâd been stumbling around for weeks and say yes without the scrutiny and worry of what having a gay daughter meant for her motherâs political career prospects. What a revelation.
Eventually Elijah got her Masters and began playing in the Chelsea Symphony Orchestra, following in her fatherâs non profit footsteps, as well as giving private lessons. Sheâs always dreamed of playing with the New York Philharmonic but always has an excuse as to why she has to put it off, but she has vowed to make her 30th year audition year. Being a serious classical musician who doesnât necessarily look the part both opens and closes doors for her but sheâs found her own vibe and is comfortable in her skin and doesnât believe her music requires her to compromise that⌠so maybe the Philharmonic will accept her crazy curls and all.
Pets: Salem (black cat)
Relationships:
Rachel Berry, Dani Harper, Stevie Evans: Roommates, Elijah gets along with all of them. She doesnât step on any toes, but she may irritate with in apartment practice. Sheâd make up for it with really good homemade whatever their little hearts desired.
Darcy Allen: Surprisingly to some the physical exertion required, Â and the amount of injuries sustained, to be an orchestra musician rivals that of athletes. Darcy keeps Elijah from completely falling apart and sheâs pretty easy to talk to as well.

CyberPunk AU Backstory Drabble - Jaeger x Sirus
Something I wrote in an RP group for Jaegerâs backstory. Seems like every time I rp them Sirus ends up getting the short end of the stick. Content warning for character death, hospital, sickness and general sadness.
-------
Breathe. Just breathe.Â
Jaeger could feel the tightness of his chest and throat cutting off the circulation to his fingers and causing the pins and needles of panic to make his hands and arms go numb. Breathe. Just fuckin breathe. Heâs okay. He has to be okay. The voice in his head was on a loop of scattered panicked thoughts while in his mind's eye he could see Sirus collapsing over and over on repeat. That slow motion tumble out of Jaeger's hands and into the floor to cough like heâd been unable to breath.Â
Theyâd been trying to make it to the bathroom to get the man a much needed shower after being bedridden for what felt like days. God...Sirus had been so sure it was just a hangover...then the flu or something similar...Then heâd coughed on the way. That wheezing rattle would haunt Jaegerâs dreams he was sure of it. There had been so many little red spots in his hands. It wasnât a good sign when there was blood like that. But what did it mean?
Jaeger could feel the bile rising to the back of his throat. If heâd gotten Sirus to the hospital sooner. If they hadnât been so stubborn...Would he have been okay? Would Jaeger not be pacing the waiting room on the verge of a break down? He wanted to scream. To scream and throw the ugly designer chairs that peppered the waiting room and set fire to all of their dated wrinkled magazines. To rage and rage until the fates themselves realized their mistake and fixed it. For a moment he thought about going out for a smoke but the idea of missing out on the doctor the moment they came to fetch him kept Jaeger rooted in place.Â
The doctor stepped through the door, clipboard in hand and a stern expression. âIâm not going to mince words, Mr. Fuchs. This is...Like nothing weâve seen in a long time.â
 November 6th
The hospital room stank of antiseptic and bitter medicines. All around them top of the line monitors and machines blinked and quietly trilled out a variable orchestra of data collection conducted and composed into one full piece by the ever steady metronome of Sirusâs heart monitor. He lay on the bed, the crisp white pillowcase making his long red hair look like a crown of flames around his head as he slept. His complexion was sallow and waxy seeming. All of his former muscle tone having started to waste away from being confined to bed.
It had been three months since he came here. Three whole months and not a goddamn thing had come of it. Jaeger sat in the chair beside the bed, staring blankly at the wall lost in his thoughts. The diagnosis had been rapid cell death brought on by some kind of rare genetic disease. The technical parts of it all had gone over Jaegerâs head as it was explained to him by the doctor but he had felt his guts turn to ice hearing words like Hope for the best and prepare for the worst or Weâre doing the best we can butâŚÂ After many nights of heavy research and coming to the same answer Jaeger felt even more confused and frustrated. It seemed no one, at least no one he could find, had seen or heard enough about this kind of condition to treat it.Â
Sirusâs body was being constantly regenerated by the nanobot swarm theyâd released into his bloodstream but his original cells were just not strong enough to keep up with the disease. Jaeger had started to grow scared. Honestly and truly scared that his fiancĂŠ was never going to leave this place.Â
The thought lodged itself around his heart like an ugly cynical serpent and squeezed so hard he felt his breath catch in his chest. He couldnât cry. Not in this place. Starting to get up from the chair, the object shifted and Sirus stirred slightly on the pillow. âJaeger? Baby youâre still here?â He croaked his voice a heavy dry rasp.Â
âOf course Iâm still here.â Jaeger pushed his emotions back down into his chest and forced a smile, reaching for Sirusâs hand and squeezing it. It felt so cold and the rough places where his fingers had calloused from his guitar were starting to grow soft again. âIâm not gonna just leave you in hereâŚâ It was a selfish thing at the core of it. Jaeger kept telling himself he was being noble. That he didnât want to leave Sirus alone. That he was sure his fiancĂŠ needed his support. No matter how much of that was true; it was vastly outweighed by his own desire to not go back to their empty dorm. To have to spend the day fighting his own mind and knowing no matter how much he wanted it Sirus wasnât going to come through the door.Â
âDid you even sleep?â Sirus frowned, struggling to sit up some against the pillow.Â
âYeah babe..I slept. You were asleep too but I slept.â It was a lie and not a very good one. Jaeger moved to help Sirus sit up and tend to his smaller needs like the bedpan and getting him water. The solid food was refused at first but then reluctantly forced down only to be thrown back up. It was steadily growing to become routine. A horrible thought that hung over the room with suffocating realness. Jaeger settled back into the chair watching the nurse make their rounds and coming in to check on Sirus after hearing the man vomit into the bedpan. This was...life now.
May 9th
It had now been nine months since Sirus had been admitted to the hospital. Jaeger found himself spending more time there than he had in his dorm or even his own home. He slept there most nights when the nurses felt too sorry for him to kick him out and theyâd all started to know him by name.
At the very least Sirus had kept his spirit. Through it all that was the only thing that had remained the same. He kept pushing. Kept agreeing to the tests, the experiments, anything that might get him well no matter how invasive or painful. He wanted to live. He wanted to get through this. Unfortunately all the tests seemed to come back the same. Nothing short of a miracle was going to stop this.Â
It was a miracle Jaeger kept hoping for. Heâd never been religious but he found himself sending little prayers to anyone out there who was listening. PleaseâŚ.He canât go out like this...We have too much left to do. But if the universe was listening it was turning a cold shoulder. Heart heavy Jaeger made his way to Sirusâs room carrying his guitar case. The collection of medical equipment growing ever larger and more complicated by the week around the narrow hospital bed. âHey babe~â Jaeger greeted with all the enthusiasm he could muster, a wide fiery grin on his face. âHow you feeling?âÂ
Sirus raised his head, lifting the oxygen mask slightly to lean up for a kiss. âBetter.â He muttered.Â
As Jaeger gave his fiancĂŠ the requested kiss he wondered to himself how theyâd gotten to this point of lying to each otherâs faces. âHappy anniversary babyâŚâ He whispered as his throat clenched to choke off his voice. For a moment they both just stared, Jaegerâs eyes full of unshed tears and Sirusâs blazing with an unspoken donât. He didnât want the pity. He didnât want the tears. He wanted them both to keep being strong. He was going to get out of this bed. He was sure of it. Sitting up with a shaking push of his arm, Sirus tilted his head at Jaegerâs guitar. âAre you going to play for me?âÂ
âAh, yeah.â Jaeger swallowed and nodded as he wiped his eyes. âLet me just tune it up. I wrote you something.â
Softly he began to play and sing, a gentle mellow tune.
âDistance and space,
Stars donât feel any of our history.
Theyâre too far away to feel any of this pain.
You are my starlight baby and you take me away from this place.
The sky may be black now, but donât you cry.
Itâs just a new canvas and weâre gonna fill it
With every good thing we ever felt.
Make love to me baby.Â
Your heart beating against mine.
Weâre going to make this black sky light up
Brighter than the city at night time.
Distance and space
Don't matter in this history.
Cause you and me are only stars baby.Â
And your light takes me far from this placeâŚ"
 October 20th, 2147
There have been a call in the night. A shrill unwelcome sound that had jolted Jaeger from his uneasy sleep in his dorm bed. Heâd only meant to rest his eyes. Itâd been a quick trip home to get a few things and then come right back, but heâd been asleep for hours and now the hospital was calling him. Sirusâs blood pressure had dropped dangerously low in the night and heâd flat lined for a moment. His heart was growing weak and now...after a year and some months it was becoming blazingly clear this was going to be the end.Â
Jaeger cursed himself for leaving at all as he sped down the road back to the hospital, pushing his bike as fast as it would go and weaving in and out of traffic. His eyes stung and his throat burned as the numbness started to settle into his extremities again. No. He thought against the storm raging in his mind. You canât have him. Heâs not ready. Iâm not ready.Â
He wasnât sure who he was talking to but it didnât matter; it was all he could think as his steps pounded up the stairs of the hospital and down the halls to Sirusâs room. Iâm not ready. Iâm not ready. You canât have him yet. Iâm not ready.
Entering the room he nearly pushed over the nurse in his rush to get to the bedside. âSir you canât!â She called only to be stopped by the doctor on hand and motioned out into the hall. Jaeger fell to his knees on the sterile concrete floor next to the bed and grasp Sirusâs hand. âBaby...Baby...câmon...you canât ...I-â His voice pitched up in a harsh hard crack. âCanât âŚ.Without youâŚ.âÂ
He was fading fast and he knew it. Sirus turned his head and mouthed something unintelligible under the oxygen mask, his eyes sad but accepting as he curled his fingers in Jaegerâs. âWhat? I canâtâŚâ Jaeger leaned in his ears desperately straining to catch it as Sirus repeated himself.Â
DonâtâŚ.let it stay darkâŚÂ
With one final breath that fogged the inside of the mask and the deafening tone of the flatlining monitor...the sky of Jaegerâs heart fell into pitch black night.

PR: Shock And Awe soundtrack (Jeff Beal)
MUSIC.FILM RECORDINGS AND VARĂSE SARABANDE RECORDS TO RELEASE THE SHOCK AND AWE â ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Original Music by Jeff Beal (July 13, 2018â Los Angeles, CA) â Today Music.Film Recordings and Varèse Sarabande releases the SHOCK AND AWE  â Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and on CD July 13, 2018. The album features original score composed by Emmy Award Winner Jeff Beal (AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL: TRUTH TO POWER, HOUSE OF CARDS).
âLegendary director Rob Reiner used archival footage of George W. Bush, Colin Powell, and Donald Rumsfeld, to chilling effect, much like Oliver Stone did in JFK,â said Beal, who was greatly influenced by John Williamsâ work on the aforementioned JFK.  âI imagine that SHOCK AND AWE is a bit of homage to his work; orchestral, harmonically complex, and using the tropes of âpatriotic musicâ trumpet, brass, drums, but with a sense of loss, gravitas and ache.â In 2003, the White House administration made a case for the invasion of Iraq. The facts didnât add up, and only one team of journalists got the story right. SHOCK AND AWE is the true story of these journalists, and what it is like to hunt for the truth when the stakes are life, death, and American democracy. âOur film celebrates the real life journalists heroes who were striving to debunk the false information of Saddamâs âweapons of mass destructionâ used to justify the 2003 Iraq War, in the wake of 9/11,â Beal described. âEven though our film is essentially a docudrama, it also plays very much like a political thriller ala ALL THE PRESIDENTâS MEN and I wanted to write a visceral, suspenseful, and emotionally invested score.â Given the strained relationship between the press and politicians the past few years, the message of the film became very timely.  âRob started making SHOCK AND AWE before the 2016 presidential election, By the time we were in post, Trump had won the presidency, and we all felt the message of the film was even more important and relevant, given the current debates about âfake newsâ and objective facts. A five-time EMMYÂŽ winner, Bealâs approach is a favorite for more sophisticated works.  His TV credits include HBOâs ROME, CARNIVĂLE and the Netflix series HOUSE OF CARDS. His documentary work includes BLACKFISH, WEINER, THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES, AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL: TRUTH TO POWER, Oliver Stoneâs THE PUTIN INTERVIEWS, and BOSTON the recently released documentary about the history of the Boston Marathon.  Jeffâs upcoming projects include the documentaries THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING (directed by Nathaniel Kahn) and GENERATION WEALTH (directed by Lauren Greenfield), and the upcoming series GRAND HOTEL on ABC. Recently, Jeffâs performing, conducting, and composing worlds have begun converging.  He conducted The National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in the premiere of HOUSE OF CARDS IN CONCERT (represented by Columbia Artists Management), with further performances in Miami, The Netherlands, and Denmark. He also led the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra for the premiere of BLACKFISH live-to-picture and conducted the Boston Pops Orchestra live for the premiere of BOSTON. In May several of his pieces were performed including âThe Salvage Menâ by The Apollo Chorus (Chicago), the Brooklyn Youth Chorus premiering his piece âThe Fire Brandâ at BAM, and Oregon Ballet Theatre premiering the ballet Terra, choreographed by Helen Pickett. Castle Rock Entertainment, Vertical Entertainment, DirecTV Cinema present SHOCK AND AWE, currently viewable via DirecTV and opening in theaters on July 13, 2018.
