Honestly really glad I read Catherine M. Roach’s nonfiction book “Happily Ever After: the romance story in popular culture”. It’s good literary analysis of a genre, and it helped me identity the particulars of how a given book does or does not work for me.
#Min reads Romances#if I just dislike the characters from the start I can drop the book and pick another#if we get far enough into the plot that I want to see how it works out#and either a lead does something I CANNOT imagine them making up for#or by the time the books ends I feel they haven't made up for their harms to the other lead#or they've apologized but we don't have enough time to see CHANGED BEHAVIOR#that I can't imagine the Happily Ever After lasting in the long run#THAT'S when I want to throw the book at the wall#recently had the surprise at getting mad at the book for this with a SUPPORTING character#like excuse you this fucker coerced multiple people to cover up a scandal#and ensure his title had an heir#and he not only SUCCEEDS#he and his wife rekindle their old romance?#no fuck that
