What is a Mortal Kombat?

To get a basic understanding of the series you got 3 canons to work with. You have the Midway games (Original Dev team), you have The NRS reboot (the canon most people are known with) and you got the The New Era ( the one that changed it all).

Classic games

The first game takes place on an Island owned by Shang Tsung, the final boss. The whole premise of why everyone is fighting on an island is because of the Mortal Kombat tournament, which happens every generation, and is a tournament mostly against Earthrealm and Outworld. Basically how it works, is if your realm wins 10 tournaments in a row, your realm gets fused with the winners (but also you can choose not to do that because fuck it). Outworld won 9 tournaments and with this one, one of the biggest villains of the franchise, Shao Kahn, fuses Earthrealm with Outworld and fucks up the entire human race. Our champions, Liu Kang a Shaolin monk, Johnny Cage the actor and Sonya Blade a Special Forces Commander, led by the thunder God Raiden won't let that shit slide. Oh also Kano is here and he's a proper Aussie, ye m8? Anyways, Liu Kang sweeps the floor with everyone, including a four armed hurdling mass of muscle named Goro, kicks Shang Tsungs ass and practically saves the Earth. Bonus fun fact, Scorpion kills Sub Zero because he thought he killed his family and clan and as revenge, he spit roasts him.

MK2 takes place some time after that with Shang looking a little sexier and asking the Earthrealmers to join a second MK tournament. If they don't oblige, they're gonna invade Earth (save that for a little later). Also Sub Zero is back, except not really the one who got killed by Scorpion was Bi-Han, and this is his younger brother, Kuai Liang. Getting back on topic we got some new characters like Jax, Sonya's partner from the Special Forces, Kuai Liang Sub Zero, Kung Lao who's the cooler Shaolin monk and also has a hat that's also a throwing weapon, Kitana, who is the main villains step daughter (sorta), Mileena, who's a test tube baby made by Shang Tsung for Shao Kahn, Reptile, who as you could guess is a lizard, and Barraka, who has Nosferatu's face (but also like, his species is tied to Mileena's creation because she's half Tarkatan. Anyways, some shit happens and Liu Kang beats the fuck out of Shao Kahn.

MK3, instead of being yet another tournament, Shao Kahn says FUCK IT and invades earth with the Outworld armies. Not only that, but the Lin Kuei (Sub Zero's clan) are being turned into cyborgs. All but one of them escaped, that one being Sub Zero. One cop survives New York, Johnny Cage gets killed by a centaur, there's a speedster with swords and fireballs coming out of his face, and boom, bang BING, we got some new characters. There's Stryker the Cop I talked about a few seconds ago, Kabal the speedster because the co-creator really wanted to make a psycho killer flash, Cyrax Sektor and Smoke who are the cyber Lin Kuei, Rain, who appears in like 5 games but only does something in 3 and isn't playable in one of the games he's in, Night Wolf who's a native American, Ermac who uses they/them and Sindel, the biggest bitch in the fucking seven seas. Oh also Bi-Han is back and he's edgy. He now goes by Noob Saibot, which if you read backwards is Tobias and Boon, the creators of Mortal Kombat. No time for that though because somehow Shao Kahn returned after being fisted, Johnny Cage gets brought back to life and Liu Kang kills Shao Kahn once more again, the end.

If that's not confusing enough, we aren't done yet because now we got

3D games

I'm not doing Mortal Kombat 4

Deadly Alliance starts with Shang Tsung and his boyfriend Quan Chi snapping Liu Kang's neck so he can't interrupt them in reawakening Onaga, the king of all scalies and one of the most powerful forces in the realms. And now Liu Kang is a zombie, Raiden kicks Shang and Quan's asses or at least tries. Also we're introduced to Kenshi Takahashi the blind swordsman with a magic sword, and sexy vampire pirate lady, Nitara, more on her later.

Deception takes place right after that, where Raiden is trying to fight the Deadly Alliance (who are literally just Shang and Quan), failing. Raiden dies, Quan Chi kills Shang Tsung which somehow awakens Onaga. Quan can't do piss and trying to fight him, somehow brings both Raiden and Shang Tsung back to life... Okay?? And then Raiden nukes himself and Onaga walks it off. Deceptions protagonist is a little shit called Shujinko, a student of Bo Rai Cho, the same man who trained Kung Lao and Liu Kang. He then gets encountered by Damashi, a glowy ball that tells him he has to help the Elder Gods by retrieving the Kamidogu (which are basically Jewelry that hold the fabric of the universe). And Shujinko, being the gullible idiot he is accepts. And from this point on, the game turns into you fixing everyone else's problems like finding Bo Rai Cho's sodding watch, getting water back from another realm, and beating the shit out of Wesley Snipes. Speaking of Blade we got other sick characters like Kira and Kobra, Black Dragon members and one of them is named after a martial art/movie, Havik who is a klerk of chaos, Hotaru the Policemun, Dairou who's an outlaw loose and runnin', and Li Mei, voiced by Kelly Hu in the latest game. After all that, you find all the Kamidogu, you defeat everyone + Scorpion is the final boss (don't ask me, I don't fuggin know why) and what's your reward? Realizing you've been deceived the whole game and not seeing a final battle between Onaga and Shujinko (even though Shujinko can definitely beat Onaga but fuck it).

Armageddon begins with this schmuck named Argus, an Edenian God who did it with a mortal woman Delia and they had two boys who had to be put in stalagmites because Argus knows the apocalypse is on its way. Thousands of years later, Daegon and Taven, the two brothers wake up. Daegon basically made the Red Dragon clan, named after Caro who's basically Taven's spirit animal and he helps bring about the apocalypse. Taven's character can be summed up to "Who are you? Who's that? Uuuuh..." But that's what I love about him. Anyways, Taven looks for his asshole brother, de-frosts a bad bitch and kicks everyone's ass. Which translates to what Armageddon really is. All the characters choose sides. We get one of the coolest fmv sequences in PS2 history and everyone dies trying to take Blaze's power. Blaze is a demigod-esque creation made by Argus to warn Taven and Daegon about the apocalypse, but also whoever kills him, gains his power and basically becomes the developer of the game. But because Taven is the main character, he has to kill everyone he encounters, a few of those people being one's he was proud to call friends. He climbs to the top, kills Daegon, destroys Blaze and saves the universe, the end.

Netherrealm Era

After Armageddon, Midway shut down, Warner Brothers bought Mortal Kombat and Netherrealm studios took over the franchise and this is where it all went downhill.

Mortal Kombat 9 starts with the end of the previous game. Except it doesn't, because Taven is somehow not here and Shao Kahn walked all the way back to kill him after being carried away by Onaga. Before Shao Kahn crushed him, Raiden sends a message to his past self saying only three things. "He Must Win.". We are now in the first Mortal Kombat except it's HD and Johnny is down bad for Sonya. Sonya is here just so she can find Jax who's lost on the island somewhere, Bi-Han is a bit of a prick and Shang Tsung is the only character in the game who has common sense. Liu Kang beats Shang Tsung, Jax gets his arms ripped off by Ermac, Johnny only gets to win if he has a suit and Mileena gets the most revieling outfit in fighting game history. Kitana and Liu Kang have an on and off thing, Reptile gets bullied (poor thang) and before Kuai Liang can kill Scorpion for killing his brother, he's taken away by the cyber Lin Kuei because Raiden saved Smoke from being cyberized and he says there's nothing he can do (that's bullshit but okay). Anyways, Kung Lao is doing pretty good in the tournament and then Shao Kahn snaps his neck. Feeling horrible by the death of his Shaolin brother, Liu Kang jumps in the arena and fists Shao Kahn. Sometime later, we learned that Shao Kahn survived because they put him in the Soul Chamber, a place in the Outworld arena that heals any and all wounds. He then gets the idea by Quan Chi to invade Earthrealm which completely goes against the laws of Mortal Kombat. And Shang Tsung knows and wants to stop them, but Shao Kahn doesn't fucking care and erased him from existance. they get guns from Kano, and they start blasting. Army can't do shit and somehow, a single cop (Stryker) is able to fight off A lizard man, a fire breathing cat and the only thing in Outworld that knows what pronouns are. Kabal was here too, but only for the first two fights. But he doesn't get his super speed here because he's just an average dude and maybe dating Stryker? I don't know. Anyways Kabal gets roasted by a big buff cat, taken to the Black Dragon and given a respiratory device by Kano that helps him breathe. He's basically Deadpool - the guns + super speed because the magic atmosphere of Outworld gave him that. Don't ask how anyone else got that after going to Outworld, idk🤷‍♀️. Anyways Quan Chi and Bitch-han bring back Sindel and mind control her to do their biding. Meanwhile, our heroes that consist of Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Jax Briggs, Night Wolf, Cyber Sub Zero, Smoke, Kitana, Stryker, Kabal, Kitana and Liu Kang sit and do nothing. The Bastard Sektor walks in and with his Cyber Lin Kuei to tire out the heroes until Sindel arrives, the worst scene in MK history plays because the purple bitch kills damn near everyone and kicks Smoke in the nads, and then Night Wolf, the most forgettable Mortal Kombat character kills Sindel by Hail Mary. Raiden looks for help of Quan Dale Dingle, but he instead of helping, brings everyone who died back as revenants, which are basically zombies but with memories of the ones who died and they are pretty strong. Raiden fights three at once, Kills Liu Kang because he fears Shao Kahn is going to kill him and with the power of the Elder Gods, Raiden goes super Saiyan and does a Kamehameha, killing Shao Kahn. Yeah all of that was one game.

Mortal Kombat X (or as dip shits would call it mk 10) starts with Johnny, Sonya and Kenshi fighting revenant Sub Zero (who's a human revenant because of MKX prequel comic nonsense don't worry about it), Smoke who isn't even playable, Sindel who's a bitch through and through and Jax, who in a minute turns back into a human because of unexplained reasons, but I guess by killing his revenant, Liu, Kitana and Lao who are some. it turns out they were going to the Jin Sei chamber (earthrealm's life force that is pure light) where Quan Chi and his boss, Shinnok exact their plan of taking over Earthrealm by putting Shinnok into the Jin Sei, corrupting it and turning him into a super Saiyan but he looks like a devil, so kind of like a ssj4 thing? Doesn't matter because Johnny learns he has God killing powers and uses them to punch Shinnok in the nuts. Raiden seals him and the rest of the game is now a 20 years time skip. And now we have the next gen of kombatants, called the Kombat Kids by the fans. You got Cassie Cage the mc, Jaqui Briggs, who's basically Jax 2.0, Kung Jin, Lao's cousing who fights with a bow and Takeda, who has whips, bombs and a fuckin lightsaber. Anyways other new characters you have are Kotal Kahn who took over the throne, Erron Black who is the Cowboy and D'vorah, a character that absolutely everyone hates because she kills Mileena, who had a civil war with Kotal for the throne. Also Scorpion, now Hanzo Hasashi kills Quan Chi after learning it was him who disguised himself as Bi-Han to kill the Shirai Ryu out of spite I guess? D'vorah betrays Kotal, Almost kills Johnny but does get wrecked by Cassie who does also have the same God killing powers as Johnny, and he uses them to punch Shinnok in the nuts. Raiden puts himself in the Jin Sei Chamber because Shinnok corrupted it. Raiden purifies the Jin Sei and everyone gets a happy ending. Except Shinnok, who gets decapitated by dark Raiden.

Mortal Kombat 11 is a flawed masterpiece, and that flaw is the multiverse bullshit. So basically, Shinnok's mom Kronika who's like the keeper of time, wants to kill the entire universe because it's not balanced (shut the fuck up, ya bitch). Anyways, we got Geras, who can never die because he's a fixed point in time but is mostly known for pounding ass in the next game, Kollector who is the IRS and I hate him, and Centrion who is Shinnok's sister. There's also he Frozen bad bitch from earlier and her name is Frost, who is like Sub Zero minus but she's cyberized like Sektor and Cyrax who are in this game but unplayable (WHY NETHERREALM!). Anyways while remaking the timeline, Kronika accidentally summoned past versions of Liu Kang, Kitana, Kung Lao, Jade (who was dead but I didn't give a shit to introduce her at the start) and also she has maybe done it with Kotal (LITTERALY oc x canon shit) ((Also Jade doesn't kill D'vorah when given the chance, the stupid bitch)), Jax and a past version of Erron Black, even though he's still alive??, and also Shao Kahn with the coolest design of all time. Also Barraka is back, because I forgot to mention the bug bitch killed him too. Anyways, now we're spending the game beating up but rarely killing beloved characters. The cyber Lin Kuei and Frost and old Jax invade their ship that they use to get to Kronika's keep. Young Liu Kang dies, but Raiden fuses with revenant Liu Kang and that turns Liu Kang into a fake Gogeta, aka Fire God Liu Kang (any of this starting to sound like fanfiction?). Anyways they make it to the island where Kronika's keep is and then, everyone but Liu Kang gets Thanos snapped. Liu kills all the leveled up revenants, Glasses Kronika and brings back Raiden to help him rewrite history.

The MK11 expansion, Aftermath, brings back Sheeva, who is now queen of the Shokan, the same species as Goro and Kintaro (the fire breathing cat from MK9), Night Wolf, Fujin the wind God and brother of Raiden, and Shanga langa ding dong. Fujin, Night Wolf and Shang were all locked away in a place beyond time until just now somehow (just roll with it okay? Okay). The plot of this story expansion is basically, Liu Kang wants to reset the universe, but he can't because he doesn't have Kronika's crown, which is needed to do the universe reset. So our boy Liu takes the two idiots and Shang into the past. I just now realized, Raiden is the only smart person in this game, because he knows Shang Tsung is planning something devious. Liu maybe knows but plays it off. They go back to previous points in the game to get the crown, revive Sindel who says she was mind controlled but later she says she's evil from the start (holy fuck I want to kill her and then myself). They get a boatsman, Kahron, to take them to the keep. In the process, D'vorah kills the poster boy of the franchise (Dominic I will fucking end your bloodline). Sindel gets Shao Kahn, heals his eyes that were sliced out by Kitana, they kill Liu and Lao, Shang reveals that he wants to reset the timeline (Fujin you stupid) , he Soul sucks Sindel and Shao Kahn, kills Kronika, but before he can do anything with Kronika's Hourglass, Liu Kang breaks in, kicks Shang Tsungs ass and reboots the series one more fucking time, which brings us to...

MORTAL 1 KOMBAT (or Mortal Kombat 1

This game starts with Shang Tsung being a failing snake oil salesman because he can barely survive. Then someone who looks like Kronika comes in and he makes this face

Anyway, we're introduced to Kung Lao and baby boy Raiden, who are farmers but also train Martial arts under the belt of Madame Bo, this universes version of Bo Rai Cho and she runs a kitchen, what more could you want with a grandma. Later, the Lin Kuei invade and we get the return of my boy Smoke who now has a Karambit and is voiced by Spiderman. He's Joined by Kuai Liang who is now Scorpion, and Bi-Han Sub Zero, the worst he's ever been i hate him. It's like they took his personality from Mortal Kombat 11 and slapped it over a poor man's imitation. Kung Lao kicks all three of their asses but only because they were pulling their punches. They join Liu who is basically Raiden now, and look for Johnny Cage, who's having a one-sided argument with his wife, and then she leaves and doesn't come back. Then, Kenshi breaks in, wanting Sento, the sword of his family which now lays on displayed on Johnny's wall. They fight, and Johnny beats him effortlessly. Johnny ties him to a chair and interrogates him until Liu Kang, along with Scorpion and Sub Zero walk in, which leads to one of the most iconic moments in the franchise

They want to untie Kenshi, but Johnny doesn't want that and thinks this is a prank, so he tries to play along but ends up being tossed into a million dollar statue, which triggers him and Johnny starts beating the shit out of Bitch-Han. Liu intervenes before Johnny can do his second fatality on him.they all go to the Wu Shi monk academy, where they train for the Great Tournament between Earthrealm and the realm of Outworld (that's LITTERALY what they call it, I'm not joking). Raiden beats them all using the one move he has, advance Cartwheel kick. Winning, Raiden is chosen to represent Earthrealm. And for winning, Liu Kang gives him a lightning amulet, which gives him lightning powers so he can fairly combat the Outworld fighters. Entering Outworld through a portal created by Liu, they are introduced by Kitana, Mileena and the palace guard, so-called the Umgadi, featuring two returning characters, one of which does nothing and the other was just a barrier. The one's i speak of are Khameleon and Tanya, the first canon lesbian in Mortal Kombat who has a thing going on with Mileena. Li Mei is back and... She's voiced by Kelly Hu. No wonder I forget she's in this game all the time. but along Li Mei, we have Shao Kahn, who is now degraded to General Shao, and his second in command, Reiko. I forgot to mention that Sindel is in this game and for the first time in the series, I don't mind her. She's a sweet, caring mother who is actually a mother to both Kitana and Mileena. Shao is now jobbing more than ever, from losing to a farmer, to being wrecked by queen. After winning the tournament, Liu Kang sends Kung Lao, Johnny and Kenshi to look for Shang Tsung, as it's word that he's somewhere in Outworld. The tremendous trio find a colony of Tarkatans, Outworlders infected by a disease called Tarkat, which deforms and debilitates. Shang Tsung is there and plans to harvest their marrow for a cure for Mileena, who as we find out, she has Tarkat. After a few fights, Kenshi pushes Johnny out of the way, as Mileena has gone feral, took some sais of the table, and stabs Kenshi's eyes out. As this happens Shao and tiny ass Goro walk in and take them to Shang Tsung's true lab, the Flesh Pits where Reptile works for him because Shang says he has his family captive. But as it's revealed, this isn't the case, as Shang already killed them many moons ago. This makes Reptile (aka Syzoth) have anger. They toxic gas the place and we get a Test Your Might to survive. They escape, but as they walk through the Living Forrest, they encounter Ashrah, a demon from the Netherrealm killing demons and almost killing our heroes. Also she says Demons funny. Like... DEE-MUNZ!

Anyways, she joins the party and they search for Quan Chi, who used to be dead, but is now an escaped cole miner and also black. The way Ashrah knows where Quan Chi is because she has a magic sword called the Kriss, and she uses it to purge evil from her soul, by killing other demons. We then find Quan Chi and his jobber squad consisting of Havik who is horribly lame in comparison to his older version and design from Deception, Sareena, Ashrah's so-so sister, Darius, aka Wesley Snipes' Blade with a dash of A-Train from the boys on the side, and the absolute dog shit tier downgrade of all time, Nitara is back, and nothing that made her cool is here. She isn't cool, her design is mid at best, her head looks like an onion, and the one thing that everyone hates about Nitara in this game, is that she's voiced by Megan Fox. Megan, Goddamn, Fox. Her performance is so goddamn awful that people actually prefer Rhonda Rousey's Sonya Blade from MK11. Anyways enough bitching, because Ashrah, with the help of a Reptile kameo beats the jobber squad, but just too late to stop Quan Chi from making a tornado of souls, which he uses to create Ermac, and then does this "who's mans is this" lookin' pose as he says kill them.

In between this and Ashrah vs Quan Chi and Ermac, Johnny thanks Kenshi for saving his life, and gives him Sento, which he uses to assist Ashrah in the clobbering of Quan Chi. Now they return to the streets of Outworld's capital, Sun Do to look for a way back home. They disguise themselves, run into the Umgadi, get away and now it's Li Mei's turn to shine.

The Lin Kuei infiltrate a palace where Shang Tsung is, but while they are terrible at being stealthy, they aren't in beating Shang and Quan. But In the process, Bi-Han admits he let his and Kuai's father die, just so he can be the Lin Kuei's grandmaster. Smoke waits outside and does nothing till Kuai Liang escapes. And when Bi-Han comes out and leaves a scar on Kuai's face, even then, Smoke does literally nothing. All the characters who had their own parts in the storyline + Mileena (as it's her time to shine). They head to the Fortress where Ermac almost rips off Bi-Han's arms, fight Ermac, but it turns out the soul of Mileena and Kitana's father, Jerrod is inside Ermac...

That came out wrong... Or did it?

Anyways, they break in, Kitana almost fools General Shao and Shang Tsung right before Shang Bang puts on a crown, that awakens the Dragon Kings army and a a fake Sindel kills the queen, but Jerrod, who is still in control of Ermac, takes her soul before it leaves her body, storing Sindel as a part of Mac n' cheese. They head all come to discover that it wasn't Kronika at the intro, but instead was Shang Tsung from another timeline where he won in MK11,

Anyways, 11 Shang, who we will now call Titan Shang, has a plan to rewrite Liu Kang's timeline (the one everything else I just talked about in this entry takes place) and bring absolute fucking chaos with his team of evil time lords. Liu Kang, being the reasonable person he is, summons an army of good time lords and they all fight on the same pyramid that Armageddon's ending took place. For the first time in the entire series, you get to pick your own character for the finale. And based on the character you pick, you get a different variants of characters, most commonly fusions of already existing characters. Finally, you beat Shang and Quan, you get a thanks from Liu, and sent to Madame Bo's, where the Earthrealm heroes enjoy food and tea.

I am not happy about Sektor and Cyrax's change from Cyborgs to power suits.

I am very excited for Khaos Reigns.

But I am not a fan of the redesign of Sektor and Cyrax.

I could care less that they changed their genders. But.... Jade, Sareena, Jataaka, Kia, Skarlet, Cassie & Jacqui and Khameleon were all right there.

I'm all for new interpretations of the characters, especially since this game is all about the multiverse, but MK1 has been building up to Countess Jade and Sareena has this great redesign that's wasted as a cameo.

Also? We have the perfect design from MK11 that they refused to let us play as and the new designs feel like a downgrade

And honestly MK9 did this better. Cyrax resisting automation while Sektor was fully prepared to lose his humanity to be a more efficient assassin. Cyrax gets his redemption in MK11(pointlessly killed because Ed didn't want us to play as him 🙃)

But we're doing this AGAIN for the sake of multiverse bullshit that I'm already tired of.

But what really bothers me is the change in design and going from Cyborgs to Iron Man Suits.

They took away all the depth and tragedy that came with the cyber initiative program and just made it....people in bodysuits...

So much for "gore is an important part of MK"…… Cyber Initiative was one of the biggest body horror elements of MK

It was such a traumatic event that left people scarred for life. The process of having no say in it then getting dismembered and replacing your body with machine was pure horror. Now it's just Iron Man army.

The main elephant in the room, the gender swapping, doesn’t really bother me. But taking away that fact that they’re cyborgs is mind boggling. That’s the main thing Sektor and Cyrax are known for!

It was such a terrifying and important moment in Lin Kuei history and really spoke to the lengths that Kuai Liang went to reform the Lin Kuei. It was one of the most scary and gruesome aspects of Mk, which is what mk is all about. I'm tried of these sterile and watered down versions of these characters.

If I'm being honest, storywise. The "new era" sucks in almost every way. There are good things like redeeming Sindel, Mileena being good and having a proper sisterly relationship with Kitana, Li Mei, Reptile and Ashrah. But everything else? No. Making Kuai Liang Scorpion was bafflingly stupid. Like why couldn't they just have the Lin Kuei and Shirai Ryu be at peace? Liu Kang's new era amounted to changing but the same shit happens anyway.

It just tells the same beats over and over again. It would've been really cool if they actually told a new and different Mortal Kombat with actually different versions of the characters or entirely new characters altogether. But in every way it's just the old story but with at best slight, insignificant alterations and at worst alterations that fail to account for what made the old stuff actually cool and interesting. It should have actually did something with Liu Kang making The Great Kung Lao his champion and that should have resulted with a new story in an early era. But they refused to take risks.

To be fair, NRS can't handle their straight ships either. Like, let's look:

Liu Kang x Kitana - basic at best and bland at worst. Kitana has more chemistry and sexual tension with her best friend than she does her supposed soulmate.

Jade x Kotal - passable. But this pairing was so out of left field and the writers knew it too. So they tried to be slick by shoehorning in that weak-ass "they knew each other in the past" excuse.

Mileena x Reiko - toxic and abusive. But it did highlight how Mileena treats physical and sexual validation as equivalent to love, as well as how truly love-starved she was.

Skarlet x any guy - guaranteed to be toxic or abusive in some way. Plus I continue to side-eye MK11 for attempting to ship her with Shao Kahn (her abuser and unfortunately adoptive father). Like why. Why was that necessary.

Bi-Han x Sareena - this one is personal for me. Their story during the OG Midway era was so intriguing and had a lot of promise. I love a "redeeming one's self through helping another" story and their story hit all the right beats for me. But in this current timeline? They cooked them. Look at what they did to my girl Sareena. They completely wasted her as a character.

Jacqui x Takeda - god,this one hurts. They were my one "straight ship so good that the gays ship it" ship circa MKX. They were so cute and the puppy love was palpable. Then Jacqui's MK11 ending happened. Sis, are you not engaged? Why didn't that come up when she decided to erase herself from history? (insert something here about women having to lessen themselves for men to succeed)

Johnny x Sonya - same issue as Liu and Kitana. Bland as shit. MKX was their most interesting run. Sonya would have never married Johnny if she hadn't gotten pregnant. Sad to say it,but it is what it is.

(The fact that there's this many more or less canon straight ships, but the one singular queer pairing that debuted circa 2015 is enough to set people off really says a lot about how far we still have to go.)

People till this day will deny Taleena. They've been canon for almost a decade. It's just now, in mk1, it's not as discreet. Everyone knows they're bumping purses, but NRS isn't going full force with it. They wrote their relationship to be secretive and scandalous.

(I know damn well Mileena changed those umgadi rules the first day she was empress.)

Also, can we talk about how weird it was that they had Skarlet have some obsession over Shao khan and wanted to be his empress? I love Skarlet, but her writing, specifically that shit is so weird and unnecessary, like you said. Not every character has to be interested in another character, especially like that. Who the fuck writes that, goes over it multiple times and think, "Yeah, this is good."

I also had high hopes for Bi Han x Sareena in mk1. Very disappointed. I don't usually care for straight ships, but this one had potential, and the fact that they're both in mk1, I thought they would proceed with this ship in the new timeline.

I love Jacqui x Takeda, too. Justice for them. Honestly, if they had more time, they'd probably be the best straight ship in Mortal Kombat.

Hanzo x Harumi- Harumi dies (and then the only timeline she alive, Kuai is scorpion)

Kenshi x Suchin- Suchin is dead. Not much is known about their relationship (in mk1, she's mentioned in a few intros. Seems like they used to be something)

Nitara x Erron Black- happened off screen

Shao Kahn x Sindel- Sindel was retconned in mk11 to be as evil as Shao Kahn. Originally, she was forced to marry him. She offs herself to get away from him.

Sindel x Jerrod- They always loved each other until mk11 retcon. Mk1 kind of gave us more content. They definitely love each other in this timeline. It sucks that they're both dead.

Sektor x Bi han (mk1)- genderbent Sektor to make a straight ship.

Kuai Liang x Cyrax (mk1)- genderbent Cyrax to make a straight ship.

Kitana x Raiden (mk1)- Basically liutana.

Ashrah x Syzoth- I don't hate it, but I think they need better development if they continue with this ship in the future. Cause in storymode, Syzoth was depressed and mourning his family. Suddenly him and Ashrah are together? Idk, but if I had just found out my wife and son were murdered and realizing all the shit I did to keep them alive was for nothing, I wouldn't be jumping into a relationship. I just think this ship needs more time to develop. It happened too quickly.

In the tournament he spared every fighter scorpion interested in his battle skill

Kuai liang and scorpion beat sektor and cyrax. Sub zero saw kuai Liang join scorpion want to annoy both of them and want to challenge kuai liang

In the battle kuai liang almost got killed by sub zero then he used his secret power for he hides for a long time everybody and sub zero was surprised

kuai liang is cryomancer like sub zero the battle was fierce (kuai liang Category is Dual Blades first blade is his blades and the second is his mother blades it looks like his sub zero father blades)

The winner is kuai liang

After the MK9 event Bi-han found out about Kuai Liang's twin brother. Bi-han wants Kuai Liang to join lin kuei but he is not. Kuai liang quit IOA and joined Hanzo (he found out Quan chi was killing his family and his clan) and made a new shirai ryu clan and both of them got married together (also his parents come to the wedding too and reunion between his mom,step father and Bi-han)

After event MK11 The timekeeper in this AU is KUAI AND HANZO

okay, so, I have no idea what the IOA is or what the categories thing is referring to (a quick google shows a uk based data science place which seems wrong, and the only fandom I know with and IOA is Stargate Atlantis and that doesn't have a categories bit) BUT

I do like the idea of the brothers being separated, with one being taken to the Lin Kuei and the other having no idea. With Kuai Liang being so much younger, to the point that Bi-Han didn't even know he had a brother, would change their dynamic significantly, and I don't think Bi-Han would be as protective or accepting.

I also do like the idea of Kuai Liang having a twin and it would actually be really cool if they still had their big sister Lian who is the only one to remember Bi-Han aside from their mother.

Hanzo and Kuai Liang teaming up is always a win in my book, also the idea of Bi-han reuniting with his family at his brother's wedding is so sweet and I love it

Mortal Kombat Bloodline Episode 5 Shirai Ryu

During the war between the Empress Mileena vs ShaoKhan, Dairou Took Splinter Liuchai KungJin and Silver somewhere safe.

Dairou: Come on this Way!

So Dairou use a A Portal gem that Havik Give Him and then Use it to go to the portal and Take Splinter and Silver with Him.

Kano: There's no where for you to Go.

But Unfortunately Kano Knocked Dairou Down and then Kano Tries to kill Him. But Splinter attacks Kano to Save his Brother. Silver grabs a Portal gem and put it in her pocket and tries to save Dairou and Splinter. Kung Jin and LiuChai attacks Shao's Army.

Dairou is Doing Okay Thanks to Splinter for distracted Kano. Silver But Kano Attack Splinter and Silver and Dairou Tries to attack Kano. Kano punch Splinter right to his Stomach. But Then Splinter Started immediately Feeling Nauseous Again.

Meanwhile in Shirai Ryu, Cole is still on the phone to see what's going on.

Mileena Fights really Hard to Fight Against Shao Khan but Shao Khan is Too strong for Mileena to fight Him. So Shao Khan knocks Mileena Down.

Chapter 4

Summary: Scorpion demands a match with Sub-Zero to get his revenge on his family and clan. How will you save Sub-Zero’s life?

You, Lui Kang, Raiden, Jax, Sonya, and Johnny were surrounded by other participants. You stood between Raiden and Liu Kang. 

Raiden looks over to the side and notices one of the guards standing beside Cyrax. He gets another vision, one of Kung Lao fighting against Baraka. He leaves you and Lui Kang as he goes over to Kung Lao. Uh oh.

“Kombatants! The next match will now begin!” Shang Tsung sat atop his throne, looking high and mighty.

A burst of fire suddenly erupts before your eyes, standing inside the fire is none other than Scorpion. You look at him with awe as the crowd claps. That’s fucking awesome. He looks like a total badass. 

Johnny and Lui Kang look at each other, their both wondering who is going to be facing him.

“Scorpion! Specter of the Netherrealm. Resurrected by the sorcerer Quan Chi! Who among you is worthy of this challenge?”

“Where is the Lin Kuei Sub-Zero? He killed my family and clan. I will have his head.” Scorpion looked among the competitors.

Aw shit. Damn it. Bi-Han stay the fuck away. You thought as you internally panic. You can’t lose your half-brother. You haven’t even gotten the chance to speak with him. 

You narrow your eyes at Scorpion. He will not touch your brother. Not if you have anything to say.

“I accept the challenge.” Kung Lao steps forward and throws down the spear.

“Kung Lao.” Lui Kang says his voice laced with disbelief.

“Never mind the Lin Kuei. Now you face a Shaolin.” Kung Lao runs his two fingers across his razor-sharp hat and assumes a fighting stance.

“You will regret your impulsiveness.” Scorpion gets into his fight stance as well.

“So how good of a fighter is your friend?” You whispered to Lui Kang.

“Uh, he could use more training.” Lui Kang was worried for his friend’s well-being.

“So, he’s gonna get his Shaolin ass kicked.” Johnny said bluntly.

You and your new friends watch as Kung Lao and Scorpion fight. You cringe the moment you hear the crack of bones.

“Oh that’s gotta hurt.” You watch in shock as the powers of Scorpion prove too much for Kung Lao.

The fight between Scorpion and Kung Lao continues for a good 13 minutes, however the former soon beats Kung Lao into unconsciousness. “You are not yet a warrior.”

Without thinking, you run over to Kung Lao and place his head in your lap. Lui Kang follows behind you and kneels beside his good friend.

“Listen when your elders speak! You could not win this fight.” Raiden stands on the other side of Kung Lao.

“Perhaps, you should lecture him after...you know when he’s not fucked up.” You narrow your eyes towards Raiden.

How could he say such things to a person, who clearly wanted to prove himself worthy? No matter what anyone says, you thought Kung Lao was brave to face Scorpion and for that he earned your respect.

Scorpion is staring directly at you. He sees how you comfort the man who he defeated. How you scolded Raiden for berating Kung Lao. It was impressive that you would say such things to Lord Raiden not many would.

You sense eyes on you and look up to see Scorpion taking you in. You want to glare at him and tell him to stay the fuck away from Kung Lao and Bi-Han, but you can’t. 

Scorpion had lost his family and clan, he believed your brother Bi-Han was responsible. You understood his pain, more than anyone else here, but you needed to find out the truth. For both their sakes.

You and Lui Kang help Kung Lao to his feet and drag him away. 

“I have defeated the challenger, Shang Tsung! I demand Sub-Zero!”

You have been keeping a close eye on Raiden’s visions. He had another vision only this time it was Scorpion holding the decapitated head of Bi-Han. You gasp as you feared that would be the fate of your brother. No. You have to try. Something. Anything to save Bi-Han.

But first you have to help Kung Lao. You and Lui Kang walk past Scorpion, to find a place where Raiden can heal Kung Lao’s wounds. You place him next to Johnny and watch the fight between Nightwolf and Scorpion. It was an impressive battle but Scorpion ended up taking the win.

“The spirits have forsaken you, Shaman.” Scorpion sees Nightwolf slowly rise back onto his feet.

“An impressive start?” Shang Tsung nods his head respectively.

“You waste my time, sorcerer!” Scorpion raises his fiery fist up in the air.

“Restraint, Scorpion.” A tall, well-built man with red eyes spoke. He was completely devoid of any hair. No hair on his head, face, and chest. He also had a strange symbol on his forehead. You also spotted an authentic amulet on his belt.

Scorpion huffs out a grunt and diffuses the fire in his hands. You raise your brow, finding it strange that the man had such a hold on Scorpion. Your attention is brought back to Kung Lao as he is all healed up.

“Are you alright, Kung Lao?”

Kung Lao registers the sound of your sweet voice. His breath hitches as his eyes meet yours. He’s flirted with many women in the past, but you, you weren’t just any women. You were the type of women who made men want to marry. Your beauty could not rival another’s. In his eyes, you were a Queen.

“Yes, Lady Y/N. I am alright.” He smiles warmly. “Lui Kang and Raiden have already explained your situation to me. It’s an honor to meet you.”

You smile, “Same. Not many would challenge a man such as Scorpion and for that you have my respect.”

Kung Lao eyes widen with shock and happiness. No one has said such words to him. His closest friends and mentors had constantly compared him to the “chosen one” Lui Kang. Even Lui Kang himself, but you, you respected him even though he was defeated.

“You respect him for losing.” Lui Kang asked curiously, it did not make any sense.

“For Bravery. Many would coward upon seeing a man like Scorpion, but Kung Lao didn’t.” You smile and turn to watch the interaction between Scorpion and Shang Tsung.

You are aware of the two Shaolin’s looking at you. However, your smile turns upside down the moment you hear your brother’s name.

“You will fight Sub-Zero soon enough.” Shang Tsung stands up from his throne and takes his leave, with Quan Chi following.

The two Shaolin’s are concerned with your sudden change in demeanor.

Scorpion lowers his head and ponders recent events. You and Raiden approach Scorpion with determination to save your brother Bi-Han.

“Scorpion, I understand your desire for revenge. But Nightwolf is right. There are other ways in which you may find peace.”

“Sub-Zero deserves death.” Scorpion replies back to Raiden.

“No, he doesn’t.” You fold your arms underneath your breasts.

“Defeat Sub-Zero if you must, but do not kill him. I fear his death will give rise to a more treacherous foe.”

Ignoring Raiden’s words Scorpion says, “I will have my revenge.”

“You know what?” You unfold your arms, to clench both of your fists.

You hear Raiden’s telepathic thoughts warning you not to anger this man before both of you. For your sake and Bi-Han’s.

You take long, slow steady breaths. “Spare Sub-Zero’s life, please. Do not kill him. Raiden can request that the Elder Gods return the Shirai Ryu to the realm of mortals.”

Scorpion looked between both you and Raiden for a moment, his eyes lingered on you a bit longer until he nodded.

You sigh with relief, oh sweet sweet Suzan. I’m so scared at the thought of losing Bi-Han, I can’t even swear right now.

You immediately realize Raiden had already walked off to meet with Lui Kang and Kung Lao. The two Shaolin’s await your return to their side. They all but beg you to stay away from Scorpion, but you can’t at least not now. You had to get to the bottom of what happened to the Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei.

You flash him a nervous smile. He doesn’t smile back. He watches you for a moment longer, but then he turns his back.

“You know I get it. I understand how you feel.”

Scorpion stops but doesn’t turn. You walk up to him and hear the thoughts of Lui Kang and Kung Lao telling you to get away and run.

“You know Nightwolf is right about many things.” You sigh sadly, you don’t exactly like bringing up your past, but if this was a way to get Scorpion on Earthrealms side then you would do what you have to. Not just for Bi-han, but for Kuai Liang, Tony, and Earthrealm. “You are not the only one whose people have been victimized. Would you care to join me for a stroll, away from prying ears?”

Scorpion nods and walks with you, you tell him all about how your family’s bloodline had been hunted down, all because they desired the Soultaker sword. How your mother was wronged. How she was killed by the Red Dragon clan.

“Do you no longer cling to the past?” Scorpion had listened intently, he hated how the Red Dragon clan took your mother away from you. You were just a child.

“No. I still find myself wishing the outcomes were different. What more could I have done to save her?” You have to suppress the tears from coming down. “Honestly, a part of me does want retribution. Not for honor or justice, but…for revenge. To see them suffer. To watch there empire burn.” You stay quiet for a moment, until you speak again. “But then I realize. If I do seek revenge…what would that get me? My mother won’t come back. I will only end up losing myself…my soul.”

Scorpion wanted to scoff, but he didn’t. The more he spoke with you, he realized you and he were from different worlds, yet you both shared similar pain. He once lived with a clan of assassins and you lived a somewhat-normal lifestyle outside of Mortal Kombat. Now, you both were thrown into the battles of Mortal Kombat, to reveal Earthrealms fate.

“Is that why you asked me not to kill Sub-Zero? For my soul?”

“Part of it.” You smile sadly.

Scorpion raises his brow, “Part?”

“Sub-Zero is my half–brother.” You look into his eyes, seeing shock and anger.

“Half-brother?”

“Yes, he and I share the same mother. His father left my mother and took her sons away so they could join the Lin Kuei.” You explained, hoping to diffuse his anger.

“So you told me all of this just to save Sub-Zero. He murdered my family, my soulmate and clan…”

“We don’t know that. You’ve only heard one side of the story. Quan Chi could be lying to you.” I ball my hands into fists. “Let me talk to Sub-Zero and I promise you I will find out who killed your family.”

Scorpion’s eyes widen, he had just met you and yet you were willing to help him find the true killer of his family and clan. Why? What could you possibly gain from this aside from saving Bi-Han? Could Quan Chi be lying? Would you lie to him?

“I give you my word Scorpion. I will find out who killed your family. I may not have been able to save my mother, but I…”

“And If Quan Chi is right?”

“Then you’ll have to kill me, because I will not let you harm my brother. And if you do, you ruin any chances of having your clan restored.”

Scorpion nods, as his anger diffused as he remembers the agreement with Raiden. “How will you find out…?”

“I’m telepathic.” You smirk. “Just don’t tell Quan Chi. Don’t need that asshole to ruin any of my plans.”

“Very well. You have my word I will not tell Quan Chi and… I will spare your brother’s life.”

“Thank you.” You bow respectively. “You know how incredibly lucky you are? You have an actual chance to have the Shirai Ryu return to the living. Wow. Fuck, I wish I had that option.”

“For your mother.” Scorpion walked with you as you both headed back to Shang Tsung’s throne room.

You nod, “Yea. For my father and stepmother too.”

“Did the Red Dragons…”

“Oh! No, they died in a car crash.” You look down to the ground.

“I’m sorry for your losses.”

You shrug, “Why you didn’t kill them. It’s life. It happens. Now all I have left is Tony, Sub-Zero, and my other half-brother I have yet to meet.”

Scorpion looks at you carefully, you had lost so much and yet that loss didn’t make you into a vengeful woman. In fact, it made you kind, caring, brave, and strong. All you truly desired was to save the last living members of your family and for that Scorpion vowed to protect you.

His took notice of the tattoo on your forearm, “What of your soulmate?”

“What?”

He nudges his head towards your forearm. 

“Oh. This. I have yet to meet him. I don’t know if I want to, to be honest. My life has been rather complicated and to involve him...” You shake your head. “...Its best if I avoid him all together.”

Several kombatants are standing around discussing things with one another. You and Scorpion walk into the throne room together, both of you see Cyrax and Sektor huddled together.

“I understand there are benefits to the Grand Master’s plan…” Cyrax speaks with Sektor. “…but his plan goes against Lin Kuei principles.”

“We are Lin Kuei, Cyrax. We will obey the Grand Master’s commands.”

You roll your eyes upon hearing two Lin Kuei members. You huff a grunt and from the corner of your eyes, you see Scorpion looking at you. “What?”

“You do not like the Lin Kuei either?”

“What? What makes you think that?”

Scorpion shrugs, “Perhaps it’s the way you tense upon seeing them.”

“I do not tense.” You scoff playfully.

“You’re tense right now.”

You relax your shoulders and glare your eyes at Scorpion. “I’m starting to regret befriending you. Woah! Hey, where are you going?” You follow behind Scorpion as he makes his way over to Cyrax and Sektor.

“It means giving up our free will…our souls. It will turn us into…” Cyrax is interrupted by Sektor, who points out Scorpion’s presence with you in tow.

“Scorpion.” Sektor voice is laced with disgust.

“Your inferior clan is dead. Soon you will join them.” Cyrax holds his head up and threatens Scorpion.

“Excuse me, wannabe ninja…” You stand beside Scorpion and send a deathly glare at the two Lin Kuei members. “…if you don’t have anything nice to say than keep that fucking mouth of yours shut.”

The three men are surprised to hear you say such a thing. Sektor glares at you while Cyrax finds it humorous. He laughs and holds your chin with his two fingers. “How cute. Didn’t know Scorpion found a replacement?”

“Do your best to keep your bitch on a leash, Scorpion.” Sektor told Scorpion.

Bitch! He called you Bitch! You cracked your knuckles. “Oh. It’s about to get real!”

Before you can pounce and hit the bastard, Scorpion beat you to it. He grabbed Cyrax’s wrist and removed his hand from you. “You will keep your filthy mouth shut and keep your blood soaked hands off, Y/N!”

Cyrax pushes Scorpion backwards to which he immediately goes into a fighting stance.

“A challenge! Scorpion versus Cyrax and Sektor!” Shang Tsung announces with Quan Chi standing beside him.

“Your obsession with Sub-Zero ends here.” Cyrax goes into a fighting stance.

Before you could stand beside Scorpion and offer aid, Kung Lao grabs ahold of your hand and pulls you to stand next to him, Raiden, and Liu Kang. The three of you watch as both Sektor and Cyrax are defeated despite being formidable warriors.

“I will have my revenge, but I will not kill Sub-Zero.” Scorpion looks over to you and Raiden. Both you and Raiden smile and nod.

“Will not? Or cannot?” Sub-Zero walks into the throne room.

You groan mentally, Come on. Seriously!

“You.” Scorpion seethes as he stalks towards Sub-Zero.

While everyone watches the intense interaction between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, you had read Scorpions thoughts. 

Oh hell! I need to stop him before he does something he might regret. You thought.

“The Shirai Ryu are dead. You will suffer as they did.” Scorpion seethes.

“To hell with your clan.” Sub-Zero insults back.

“No…to hell with you!” Scorpion goes up in flames and grabs ahold of Bi-han, teleporting him somewhere else.

You try to find a way to get to Bi-han when you heard Quan Chi’s thoughts, he wanted to antagonize Scorpion and see him kill Sub-Zero. You quickly sneak past the other kombatants and just as he is about to teleport you grab ahold of his belt undetected.

You are teleported to a place that looked like hell. You look over Quan Chi’s shoulder to see Bi-han beaten into submission.

“I have avenged my family and clan.” Scorpion speaks over Bi-Han’s unconscious body.

“This is your retribution?” Quan Chi walks closer to Scorpion and doesn’t realize you behind him. “Scorpion. Kill him.”

“I…I will not. He has been beaten.” Scorpion looks at Bi-Han and can’t find it in himself to kill him. Not after his conversation with you.

“Have you forgotten?” Quan Chi shows Scorpion a vision of an entire village up in flames. The Shirai Ryu clansmen are cut down by a hail of arrows. Others are decapitated and murdered by the Lin Kuei clansmen. Among the horseback riders is Sub-Zero.

You stepped closer seeing all that had transpired, this was the reason why the Lin Kuei and Scorpion were at odds. But, it made no sense as you delve into the minds of Bi-Han and Quan chi you were able to realize the truth.

Bi-Han regains consciousness and sees the vision’s before him.

“Your clan. Your family.” Quan Chi showed Scorpion another vision, Scorpion’s wife/soulmate and infant child huddled in the corner of their home. The baby’s wail of terror breaks your heart and sends a chill up your spine.

The door opens to reveal your brother Sub-Zero with his sword in hand. He’s unmoved by Scorpion’s wife’s tears as he brings down his blade. Blood is splattered against the walls along with the petals of a rose worn in his wife’s hair.

“NOOO!” Scorpion yells with pure rage as the vision fades.

Bi-Han badly injured is up on his feet, holding his hand up in mercy. “That is not me!”

Consumed with rage, Scorpion rips off his mask and reveals his skull enveloped in flames.

You knew then that nothing would be able to stop Scorpions rage, but you had to try and defend your brother, even if it were from Scorpion himself. You didn’t care about the consequences. All that mattered was Bi-Han’s safety.

You step out from behind Scorpion and Quan Chi, you then quickly rush over to stand in front of Bi-Han. Perhaps, you could try and reason with Scorpion. Only a fool would think to do such a thing.

Seeing you standing before Sub-Zero, Scorpion looks down at you. He can remember the conversation he had with you, but his rage had all but consumed him. He took a step forward, only for you to raise your glowing green hands.

“Move aside.” He growled.

“No. I told you before if it came to this, you would have to kill me too. I will not let you kill him.”

“He killed my clan! My wife! My son! He deserves death.”

“If Scorpion truly wishes to avenge his family and clan, then he must kill Sub-Zero.” Quan Chi looks at you. “Who are you to deny him that?”

You narrow your eyes at Quan Chi, “Someone who knows the truth, you liar. When all you have done is use Scorpion’s wrath to your advantage.” You look over to Scorpion. “Remember the promise you made to me and Raiden. You kill Bi-Han and that promise goes away.”

Scorpion takes a moment to think it over. You take careful slow steps towards him.

“Please Hanzo. Don’t kill him. I told you I would find the truth and I have….”

Scorpion looks up and you can see the flames in his eyes dimming.

“Truth? What truth?” Quan Chi spoke from beside Scorpion. “Enough of this! Kill the girl and Sub-Zero, so we can be on our way.”

“I gave you my word. I stand by that.”

Hanzo nods and places his mask back on. You sigh with relief as you don’t have to fight against Scorpion.

Back in the throne room of Shang Tsung…

All the kombatants stand and talk amongst each other as they have no idea if either Sub-Zero or Scorpion will come back alive. Kung Lao and Lui Kang were both worried for your well-being, they had no time to stop you from teleporting away with Quan Chi.

Scorpion reappears in the throne room, he steps aside to reveal you supporting Sub-Zero.

You look up to see Raiden giving you a nod of approval. “Alright Bi-Han, let’s get you to my room so we can patch you up. I don’t think this place has an infirmary.”

Lui Kang and Kung Lao both ranted about how dangerous and careless that is was for you to sneak past them and teleport away with Quan Chi. They followed you out the room and continued their ranting. Raiden just shook his head, his two students were completely smitten with you and concerned for your well-being.

Sub-Zero listened to the never-ending rants of Lui Kang and Kung Lao. If he wasn’t struggling to walk, he would have kicked both of their asses, just to get them to shut up. He looked down at you and could nearly see a vein pop in your forehead.

Once you reached your bedroom chambers, you immediately closed the doors behind you. You could not hear another word from Lui Kang and Kung Lao.

Behind closed doors of your room, you placed Sub-Zero down on the bed and began tending to his wounds. The look on your face, resemble to that of his mother.

“A little advice, do not insult Scorpions family or clan. In fact, just stay away from Scorpion.” You moved around your room to grab all the necessities you need to bandage Bi-Han. “Fuck, if I not been there you would have died.” You mumbled the last part to yourself.

Bi-Han winces as he struggles to sit up from your bed. “I thank you….” He didn’t exactly know who you were or why you decided to save him.

“My name is Y/n.” You return to the bedside with your equipment in hand.

“I didn’t teleport to you. I snuck up behind Quan Chi and grabbed onto his belt.” You wring the soaked rag in your hands and begin to wipe all the blood of his chest.

“So you have mastered stealth. Impressive.” He grunts when you cleaned around his wound. He grabs ahold of your wrist to temporarily stop you from bandaging him. “Why did you interfere? Why did you save me?”

You narrow your eyes, “What you wanted to die?”

“It would have restored my honor and...”

You glared at Bi-Han, “Honor? There is no honor in dying because you lost a match. You are a fucking idiot to think so. Clearly you did not get our mother’s intelligence.” 

You rose from your position and paced around the room as you continued to rant angrily. “Not many get a choice whether they live or die and you want to die. Be fucking grateful that you are alive…”

Sub-Zero watched as you ranted and paced around the room. Despite your age, you were clearly wiser than most your age. But then he caught onto one bit of information that you ranted angrily about. What did you mean by “our mother.” It was then he pieced it together. This whole time he wondered why you looked so familiar. Why you looked so much like his mother.

“You are my sister aren’t you?”

You stopped mid-ranting and looked into his eyes. You looked like his mother, but your eyes were not hers.

“Yes.” Your shoulders become less tense. After a moment of silence, you speak again. “Our mother would not want this life for you. To easily throw your life away when all she tried to do was give us a life of normalcy.”

You move to sit on the bed, your back facing Bi-Han and your eyes casted downwards. You scoff to yourself. “Who am I to talk? When I’m forced to do the same. If only she can see me now. She would be ashamed…her sacrifice would have been for nothing. She…”

“Sacrifice?” Bi-Han leaned forward despite the pain he was enduring. “What do you mean? Our mother is alive…isn’t she?”

When he receives no response from you, he places his hand on your shoulder. “How?”

“The Red Dragon clan killed her. They… wanted the soultaker sword.” You rise from your position and move to the door. “I’ll get Raiden to come and heal you. It was nice meeting you Bi-Han.”

Before Bi-Han could respond you had left out the door. He could see you concealing all the pain underneath. How just the slightest mention of your mother changed your demeanor. He realized then you had witnessed her death.

Mortal Kombat Onslaught: Noob Saibot (Bi-Han) & Scorpion (Kuai Liang)

For those unaware, MK1!Scorpion showed up in Mortal Kombat: Onslaught mobile game, as he needed to travel to this timeline to do a special mission for Fire Lord Liu Kang. Through the story mode we could see people’s reaction to the newcomer and their confusion of course is understandable.

So we have Sonya (Special Forces):

Cyber Cyrax who literally went ERROR because the Kuai Liang’s voice did not match who he was:

AND THEN WE HAVE NOOB SAIBOT, WHO WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS INTERACTION WITH THIS NEW SCORPION, WITHOUT MISSING A BEAT SAYS WELCOME TO THE NETHERREALM, BROTHER

and like always Bi-Han need to introduce himself, because Kuai Liang has a problem with recognizing his brother (an understandable problem considering everything that happened in their respective timelines). Say what you want about older Sub-Zero, but Bi-Han, somehow, always can recognize Kuai Liang, no matter who he is and damn, that is so heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

I don't think comparing Kuai Liang in other timelines is a good comparison. For one, previous Lin Kuei were slaves of Sektor and brutalised in body and mind. They weren't Kuai's enemies willingly. Even then, Midway Kuai took years, maybe a decade to return and free them when Sektor was already weak. In NRS, he doesn't think of saving them till much later. Beating the Cyber Lin Kuei was easy because you just needed to kill Sektor.

MK1 Kuai is up against flesh and blood who chose to hurt him and his loved ones not because there was a program onto them. And he has been away for months now and only just getting some resources. He and Tomáš could do nothing. For now.

Comparing Kuai Liang to his previous incarnations, to me at least, seems like a natural thing, because to whom else should we compare him? To Hanzo, grieving the loss of his wife and son and extermination of the whole clan? After all MK1 Kuai Liang’s character arc is based on the younger Sub-Zero’s story from original and alternative timeline, just in a new way and with addition of different Scorpion vs Sub-Zero’s legacy to bear.

The Lin Kuei were raised from young age to be killers, the same as they are in new timeline, this time just under the blessing of good guys. Having no choice but continue father/family's tradition? Check. Having doubts about Lin Kuei's morals and goals and rejecting it? Check. Being hunted for leaving the clan? Check. Taking an action against "corrupted" Lin Kuei? Check.

(Also, those who hunted MK1 Kuai Liang too may not wish his death or harm, but they do as ordered, because obedience and loyalty is what they swear to Grandmaster and Kuai Liang choose on his own to not obey. Like, from their perspective, Scorpion is traitor while they are the good, loyal members and duty demands to take action against the traitor, the same as duty demanded from Kuai Liang to stand against Bi-Han. The Cyber Lin Kuei or new Lin Kuei are still just pawns in the war between Kuai Liang and the Grandmaster.)

And yes, I’m aware the new game is different, the same way an alternative timeline was to his origin, so I don’t expect a full copy of events. Especially since MK1 Kuai Liang is not a lone figure on the run against his former associates anymore. You say “he has been away for months now and only just getting some resources. He and Tomáš could do nothing. For now.”, but as the intro dialogues claim, he and Smoke aren’t hiding and doing nothing. They are active players in the war between Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei, as they A) recruited and train their own army (clan members), B) try to hunt down Bi-Han themselves and C) promise to deal with Lin Kuei’s threat to Outworld and Earthrealm countless times. So if you say “MK1 Kuai is up against flesh and blood who chose to hurt him and his loved ones” then well, I don’t see any regret or restraint from his side either. He is ready to burn down Lin Kuei and reshape it to his liking and values, so fighting against his supposed people (blood ties?) doesn’t seem that troubling for any brother - except Tomas, who would want brothers to reconcile rather than fight to death. 

And let's not forget that Kuai Liang already assumed Cyrax and Sektor would support Bi-Han over him, but that does not explain how two warriors (so far not officially related to ruling family) could so easily “detrohizing” a legal heir. Especially, if he confronted Lin Kuei as Tomas thought he should after defeating and capturing Bi-Han in the main storyline. Kuai Liang being born Lin Kuei does not mean he must have that close and loving relationship with his people in the first place but he still has a legal claim to his homeland and father's legacy. So why there was no one to back him up besides Tomas? Though it is worth to note he blames Bi-Han for “corruption” of them more than members of Lin Kuei itself. But that is sadly one more thing not explained by NRS at all. At least for now. The same as with previous timeline, I think we could argue if Kuai Liang cares for Lin Kuei people as a whole or just for Lin Kuei as principle but I’m afraid we would need to wait for next game(s) to see how he interact with Lin Kuei beside Bi-Han (and Tomas). 

There is also a vital contradiction between story mode and Kuai Liang’s ending, as the letter states he and Tomas were hunted down by Lin Kuei right away after defeating Titan Shang Tsung while Liu Kang claims: 

"As you know, Bi-Han and his Lin Kuei have abandoned their roles as Earthrealm's guardians. His brother Kuai Liang has agreed to build a new clan, the Shirai Ryu, to take its place. I must go aid his efforts."

which raises a question, did Liu Kang aid him and provide protection when Kuai Liang and Tomas were at the most vulnerable against Lin Kuei’s wrath or not? Because the game and intro dialogues imply Scorpion has way more allies, resources, firepower and chance to strike back at Grandmaster than original Kuai Liang had.

Ultimately, each fan has their own expectations in regard to storyline, themes and characters’ development. Personally, mine haven't been met so far but I’m sincerely happy for anyone that enjoys the changes and I hope the expanded story will please them too. After all, we can always agree to disagree while having our own interpretations of source material 🙂

i've chewed thru lots of your lin kuei posts and i really love the info compiling/research/analysis you've done. after reading thru parts of your analysis on retirement within the lin kuei vs how defecting or leaving is punishable by death, what do you think of mk1's recent little lore drop that madam bo was lin kuei earlier in her life?

Madam Bo being once a Lin Kuei is so far one of my favorite additions to MK1 lore! She is a hilarious character but also so nice to hear about another female Lin Kuei out there.

Within the new timeline, with Lin Kuei being protectors of Earthrealm instead of assassins, I think it makes sense the members of the clan could retire in peace though I'm not sure if "retirement" is a right word? Madam Bo still performs duties assigned by Liu Kang, to whom Lin Kuei also reported just before Bi-Han went rogue. If anything, she came directly under orders of Fire God to train and take care of future champions - and doesn't that speak a lot about trust put into her? - so maybe because her new duties and long-termed undercover mission would interfere with the clan's duties, she renounced them with the consent of the Grandmaster, especially if Fire God personally asked for her assistance?

At the same time, MK1!Bi-Han makes a big deal about bloodline (or it is more about the supernatural abilities?) and because he and Tomas do not share blood, he does not consider Smoke a true Lin Kuei even if he wasn't completely ignorant of him as a brother. And sure, it could be just Bi-Han being a cold jerk but then Kuai Liang mentioned Sektor and Cyrax are loyal to Bi-Han and isn't it a bit suspicious that those two are loyal to the brother that refuses to acknowledge "outsider" as Lin Kuei?

(And this is one of the most standing off difference between old Lin Kuei and the protectors of Earthrealm, as the assassin clan welcomed people from other countries / ethnicity like Tomas (Europe) and Cyrax (Africa) and no "native" member made a fuss about them being born outside China or looking differently? To be honest, this is a pretty surprising change and I won’t lie, I’m a bit concerned about Cyrax here, as Tomas lost his European roots?)

So, if Madam Bo was once a Lin Kuei, I do wonder if there is any familiar bond between her, Bi-Han and Kuai Liang (and Smoke), especially since she seemed pretty familiar with Bi-Han non-verbal communication beside the obvious truth? You know, how she laughed after Bi-Han scoffed at Kung Lao's remark why they need more training if they beat down Lin Kuei?

I'm still not familiar with all new lore / characters intros, but so far I think if Fire God Liu Kang asked Lin Kuei for Madam Bo's assistence, there was no reason why the Grandmaster would refuse request of his, (at least technically speaking) superior.

For those who didn't know it yet, the Madam Bo as Lin Kuei bit of lore comes from Scorpion vs Kung Lao intro:

The writers must've forgot Bi-Han existed because after Kuai beat him, he vanished from story mode. It's odd given Shang and Quan Chi were willing to fight for the sake of the world but Bi-Han won't? Seriously what the hell happened to him after Kuai beat his ass because the next we hear of him is in the endings after Titan Shang is killed. Was he sleeping or something lol?

To be honest, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung were present at the Big Revelation scene and since Titan!Shang Tsung openly showed his contempt for them both, they switched sides as a result of it. I wouldn’t say they fought for the sake of Earthrealm per se, more like for their own survival and also out of spite for Titan!Shang Tsung. Bi-Han however was most likely imprisoned at that point in story, as the last time we saw Kuai Liang couldn’t leave Su-Zero behind, because he would aid Shang Tsung

but couldn’t carry on to Lin Kuei either, as the clan or more precisely, Cyrax and Sektor would choose corruption (Bi-Han) over anything else.

So logically thinking, Scorpion most likely carried his brother straight up to Liu Kang, as this was the best option he had. Leaving Bi-Han behind or letting him end with Shang Tsung or Lin Kuei would only double the danger threatening Earthrealm and Outworld.

Liu Kang chose to reveal his true role as Keeper of Time to gain allies (Sindel and her subjects) because he understood they needed to attack as soon as possible to stop Shang Tsung and Quan Chi from using soul stealers. It makes sense he did not ask Bi-Han to join that mission, as Sub-Zero couldn’t be trusted to not turn against them during the fight. After the revelation scene, there were more pressing matters to keep Liu Kang focused on, so it makes sense he did not try to persuade Bi-Han, while the rest of fighters were presumably far away from wherever Sub-Zero was holded at that time to try it either.

My best guess is to assume it is less why Bi-Han didn’t choose to aid Liu Kang and more that he was out of loop, and he wasn’t given a choice.

(And during the battle between Titans/Champions, was there any "normal character" included anyway? I would need to watch all versions of the ending, but I got the feeling that the battle was solely about the Titans/Champions?)

There is also Smoke's comment about Lin Kuei refusing to aid them, which I suspect is the reason for confusion why Bi-Han didn't fight for his and his clan' survival, the way Shang Tsung and Quan Chi did.

The "Bi-Han has corrupted them" does not necessarily mean Bi-Han refused to help and the clan obeyed. It could be, at least to my understanding, that the clan approved Bi-Han's new course of Lin Kuei's future. Now, does this comment mean Kuai Liang and Smoke returned with Bi-Han to the clan (a very weird choice), instead of actually keeping him imprisoned? Or rather they did try to reason with their folks and were in return turned down?

Frankly, I'm less surprised by the lack of Bi-Han at the end of story and more that no Lin Kuei were seen there beside Tomas and Kuai Liang. And well, Scorpion could lie that Bi-Han is injured but safe at Liu Kang's Temple and that he, per Sub-Zero's order or chain-of-command, will lead Lin Kuei in his stead. But then maybe it was safer to assume Lin Kuei is another potential threat to the mission than risking the safety of the whole Earthrealm because of foolish hope they won’t betray? In all fairness, the fact that Bi-Han in such a short time managed to undermine the old-centuries tradition is a pretty interesting implication about the political mood among Lin Kuei.

As for authors’ choices alone… I think it is less that they forget about Bi-Han and more that they simply didn’t have an idea how to utilize his character at this point in the story. Bi-Han’s betrayal was needed as an excuse to introduce Shirai Ryu into the story and refresh the Scorpion vs Sub-Zero rivalry but outside that? He is not given much importance so cutting him from the final battle was probably the safest course of action.

How I would change the rebooted Mortal Kombat timeline

The new timeline is good, but there have been some mistakes. So this is how I would change the new timeline if I could

Mortal Kombat 9

Make it clear that Taven beat Blaze, but Shao Kahn killed Taven. Have Kahn include it to his rant to Raiden. “Not even the sons of Argus and their quest could stop me”

Give Bi-Han personality as Sub-Zero. Show that he has complete distrust in Sektor and his father. Show that he had love for Kuai Liang. Show that Cyrax was Bi-Han’s only friend. Bi-Han who is feeling guilt from the Lin Kuei’s cowardly attack on the Shi-Ri Ryu, Bi-Han plans to leave the Lin Kuei feeling the organization has lost all sense of honor. To this he takes a contract from a mysterious party for the head of Shang Tsung. He joins the Mortal Kombat, using his cryomancer abilities intending to kill the sorcerer and run from the Lin Kuei.

Mileena is seen at the beginning of the game with Kitana and Jade. Kitana and Mileena were raised together as children. They believe each other to be sisters. Mileena’s costume would look like Kitana’s, just in purple because her over-sexualization was just unnecessary. When Kitana discovers the truth of her sister, she confronts Shao Kahn and when the truth about Kitana’s own parentage is presented, Kitana is captured, but it’s not just Jade who wants to save Kitana, it’s Mileena. They grew up as sisters and despite being created in Shang Tsung’s flesh pits, her loyalty is not with her father or Shang Tsung, it’s with Kitana. They missed a grand opportunity in this timeline. “let’s just make them enemies again with no emotional attachments” and when saving Kitana with the forces of light, Kitana returns the love for her sister. Family doesn’t end in blood, it’s a bond and love. Both Mileena and Kitana promised after Shao Kahn is defeated, they would rule Edenia and Outworld together and bring both realms peace. So Mileena being good until Sindel kills everyone is something that is needed. Mileena survives Sindel’s attack and is devastated and snaps and blames Raiden. So in the events of Mortal Kombat X, Mileena has no choice but to choose to hunt for Outworld’s throne, Kitana was her world and now she’s dead. Rain, Tanya, and Skarlet are loyal to Mileena. She wants to use Shinnok’s amulet to save Kitana, but Rain manipulates her to use it against Kotal Kahn

No Cyber Sub-Zero. Turning Kuai Liang into a Cyborg did nothing for him. Even his arcade ending was utterly pointless. SO what I’d change is along with Smoke, Sub-Zero would escape automation. He would unleash an ice storm that freezes all the robots holding him and as he is about to escape with Smoke, Sektor throws a blade at Smoke that gives Sub-Zero his iconic scar. Throughout the game he has his Mortal Kombat 3 outfit, an outcast from the Lin Kuei. We would see Sub-Zero fighting Sektor and finally his brother, Noob Saibot.

Mortal Kombat X

The Kombat Kids are handled better

We would be given the option as Kung Jin to free Kung Lao from his revenant state

Mileena’s forces kill D’Vorah and Kotal Kahn. Mileena would confront her now revenant sister and fail trying to save her

Frost does not stupidly attack Scorpion, instead Frost is sent with the Kombat kids. She is playable and has an arc. Does she betray her friends and Sub-Zero for power or does she fight for Earthrealm and Sub-Zero, we would see Frost choosing to fight for good and for her master

MK 11 story

Since  there are already MK11 storymode / cutscenes out on net, of course I couldn’t help myself and watch. For now, this is more like chaotic rambling than any serious meta, but I really need to get all the emotions out so, beware spoilers:

Things I like and/or wish were more exploited

RACISM/SPECIESISM IN OUTWORLD what always was a big part of storyline but rarely were talked or pointed out. We see this with Tarkatans, who were always treated as animals / slaves / beneath the Edenians or other Outworld cultures. I liked how Kitana and Jade (who in MK9 called/treated Baraka like dog) changed - or at least started changing that. The fact princess Kitana and Baraka worked against Shao Kahn reminds me one of old MK comics, what only adds points of awesomess.

Also, I freaking love how MK11 gives Outworld cultures so much details. Tarkatans (among them females too), people of Kotal with their masks and painting and all. SO GREAT! Oh, and the people watching fight in arena, cheering all the bloodness and not giving any fuck who will win and become the new khan XDDDD

Scenery. Everyone is So Beautiful. Also, nice to see old arenas, including Shang Tsung’s Island :3

KUAI LIANG AND HANZO HASASHI’S TEAMWORK :3 :3 :3 I just can’t! I love it so much. The way they work in sync with each other and their banters, SO BEAUTIFUL ;3 Also, people’s reaction at seeing them / hearing about them on good terms. So much fun! My favorite little things is their meeting before mission to destroy Cyber Lin Kuei and Sub-Zero making sure Hanzo is looking in right direction to see entrance he is actually talking about XD

ALSO, KUAI LIANG AND CYRAX. Cyrax once again breaks my heart :( Please, someone let him have his human body again! I wish there was younger, human version of Cyrax then, if just to see the epic scream match between him and Cyber Sektor XDDD Once again, Cyber Cyrax proved he never should be in command of C.I. Project; give him a free will for like few seconds, and he will be willing to blow up all cyborgs including himself :(

I’m gonna tell more about Sektor, Noob and Frost while rambling about things that irked me more or less, but let me tell you this: I start think my meta about Sektor and Bi-Han’s relationship may be actually valid thing. Also, all of them are right now the trio of black sheeps of Lin Kuei which makes this little scene

quite... heartwarming? Taking care of each other - even if just for pragmatic reasons - hits me hard cause no one really care now for Frost, Sektor and to some degree, Noob (Kuai cares, sure, but in story mode he says they share the same blood but are not brothers) :(

OLDER JOHNNY! God, I love this version of his character :3 Also, the way he deals with his younger self :D :D :D :D

Generally, I liked very much all the interaction between younger and older selfs and all family feelings :3 This reminds me MK movie (1995)’s quote, how Mortal Kombat is not about death but about life and hell yeah, MK11 brings a lot good emotions.

Wonder what happened to Erron, to change so much from his younger reckless(?) self to more calm, loyal(?) to Kotal self. Even Johnny pointed something along the lines.

For once Raiden does not fuck up stuff and his relationship with Liu Kang ends on good terms. Nice.

Kung Lao’s remarks! Haha, I missed his sense of humor. Shame there was no Jinn to share sarcastic humor...

The talk about Cassie kickings Shinnok’s ass cause she has some magic in her while Jax/Jacqui needed to use magic item to beat godness makes me wonder how Jacqui is doing, the normal mortal between all those fighters with special powers (Cassie & Johnny and their magic, Takeda & Kenshi with reading minds and so one). I wish we could see more about this.

Here are things that irked me more or less.

The inconsistency between games.

I know, messed up timlines and all, but for example, Sektor as Grandmaster and his supposed crimes. Destroying Shirai Ryu & having deal with Quan Chi wasn’t Cyber Sektor doing, but his father, the Grandmaster from Sub-Zero Mythologies. I don’t like how Sektor is now blamed for stuff he wasn’t in position(?) to do back then. He is messed up evil, but please stop making him a scapegoat for everything that went wrong with original Lin Kuei >_<

Wasn’t Jax already out of military in MKX?

I’m not sure about Kotal’s backstory too, the supposed Shao’s betrayal and being given to Shang Tsung, as “ laboratory rat”. I’m pretty sure MKX gave different story, in which he was Kahn’s loyal general once who simply put Outworld’s good over serving Mileena.

Also, the thing that pisses me off for good is the whole Jax’s wife died so he can’t deal with grief and/or wish Jacqui did not serve as soldier so he is working (for some time) for Kronika. Eh. I’m so dissappointed with this one. Killing older!Sonya does not help the feeling but frankly, why not use Sonya’s death as motivation and have two combined tragedies/family dramas into one, since Briggs and Blade-Cage are one big family? I mean, Kronika was talking about Jax’s fear that something bad will happen to Jacqui on duty which makes sense, because this connect the game to previous one and all. But it makes me sad there is little connection to Sonya’s death. Okay, maybe I need to rewatch the cutscenes to get better perspective about this plot.

MK11 in my opinion also lack the great friendship between Cassie and Jacqui seen in previous game. I get it, really, there is so many stuff happening and both girls have family crisis to deal with and all, but there is something off about their relationship and that upsets me a lot :(

The treatment of Noob Saibot, Sektor and Frost. The first two were in game solely to be beat down while the way everyone give up on Frost so fast makes me really sad. I’m supposed to believe that Kuai wish to redeem his brother (in Sub-Zero’s ending) but does not think twice about Frost? His precious student? Not to mention that once again Frost plays the villain. I wish there was second Frost to stand up with her mentor against Cyber Lin Kuei/Kronnika. Or at something that could judge how much her claims is delusion and how much truth. Did Kuai really failed her so much? :(

Also, where the hell is Smoke and Sindel? The dead queen at least was mentioned by Kitana and Shao Kahn and, if I remember correctly, wraith Jade. While there is no mention of Smoke??? :( Okay, there is, but in intro. Thanks Noob, for once you were uselful XD

Frankly, the lack of Takeda is also something I wish was changed. His presence would add a lot weight to discussion between Scorpions, what makes Shirai Ruy. The younger version felt those new students of grandmaster Hasashi aren’t worth (cause no real blood ties to original clan members) while Hanzo disagree. Takeda, as an example of great skills and loyalty to clan/Hanzo could be nice addition. Lack of Jin upsets me too :( And Syzoth :( :(

And this is really minor thing but why the hell Noob Saibot would tell Jacqui and young!Jax his former name? Like, fine, Jax knew, but why he didn’t just call himself Sub-Zero? What would made much more sense.
