my friend put together a group of people interested in forming a housing co-op and we had our first meeting today!! and wow, we definitely have the connections and know-how and expertise in this group to make it happen :D
what this means concretely is that we are going to wrestle with the federal and provincial and municipal governments for the next decade to get funding and permits and such. but like, there's a very solid chance we will get a building to live in by the end :)
#we have to have 75 apartments to get federal funding and buildings in our neighborhood are not that big so we gotta build one#but yeah there are several potential lots in the neighborhood that the city could acquire and give us#and the current administration really wants to take credit for social housing without doing any work so. we can take advantage of this#one of the people in the group works at the neighborhood tenant's union so she was the one explaining everything to the rest of us#also everyone in the group was on the same page in terms of values and goals#like community anticapitalism accessibility etc.#and also making sure conflict resolution mechanisms are in place and that it's as democratic as possible#also one guy brought up the need to make sure this doesn't become a cult and y'know what valid concern#like a co op isn't necessarily that far off from a commune so. setting out to avoid such pitfalls from the outset seems like a good call lol

like so I was catching up with one of the 2 friends I wanted to do a podcast about disability anarchism with and they told me that our other friend has moved back into town so the idea is live again. does it sound like. good to you? like 3 queer disabled people with a range of disabled experiences (in terms of visibility, stage of diagnosis, type of health problem, areas of life it affects, etc) talking about the intersections between disability justice, anticapitalism and antifascism, and activist cultures?
my pal is diabetic and they've got interested in doing this again partly bc like. they were diagnosed a couple of years ago following like a year and a half of ill health and they've found that the diabetic community they're finding is........weirdly apolitical? (which is WILD right? bc it's literally one of the most iconic Pay To Survive disabilities it's SO tied to capitalism and power like how do you. not get radicalised by that?) They're also a seasoned climate and queer rights activist and have a Lot of opinions on the ways that leftist activism can be contradictory and exclusive when it comes to disability and health.
and our friend is a very very cool person is all I can say. they are a multiply disabled poet, playwright and activist who just holy shit they do amazing work. I have known them less long than the other friend but I enjoy their company so much, they're a really funny and insightful person with a depth of life experience which they bring to everything they do.
and I would also be there. bringing my usual brand of Loud Opinion Having.
we're contemplating like. maybe one of us could prepare a presentation on a topic each week (like cyberpunk and the corporate capture of the body, or the language trap, or the myth of laziness, or activism and access clash, or the desire for clear cut labels and diagnosis where none exist) and the other two could interject and add on as needed. and then the three of us could discuss and build on those ideas. I'm thinking like 30-45 minute episodes?
idk what the audience is - whether we'd want to try and include some more 101 stuff to help people engage, or whether it's more for people who are already on board with the basic concepts - but I think it would be fun to try and I also think. possibly useful to some people. people have talked about finding the way we talk about ableism and disability justice to be illuminating (albeit a bit overwhelming) so I think if we could figure out a decent preparation and editing process we could make it a bit less Much and a bit more easy to follow (we are all Weird Brain people in a similar direction so we do tend to make big intuitive conversational jumps, which we'd need to work to avoid)

Posted @withregram • @wokescientist Capitalism, aspirations, ambitions, dreams & goals - how we do dream BIG while never losing sight that no one is free until we are all free? Dream of liberation, not luxury ✖️Does your self-worth & self-esteem hinge on being better than or superior to your fellow human beings? We are all socialized such that it does. Do you gain validation from having more material possessions, titles, awards, or “political knowledge” than other folks? We’re socialized to think that “better than” means innately more worthy. Beyond being able to have basic security to survive- my ego can’t drive my aspirations 🌹 I’ve grappled w/ this to make more humble, collective choices rather than capitalist ones even if its appealing, socially acceptable or simpler. There was value in me aspiring for more when I had little to nothing, but I know now that that aspiration was for basic security & stability- food, water, shelter, community. I never need to aspire to wealth & superior status to be safe. Aspiring to possess more hurts me & everyone cuz our liberations are tied • • • • • #anticapitalism #anticapitalist #abolition #abolishcapitalism #abolishthestate #anarchism #anarchist #anarchy #mutualaid #leftist #leftists #neoliberalism #wekeepussafe #decolonize #decolonizeyourmind #decolonizethisplace #decolonizedminds #decolonizeyourbookshelf #unlearnandrelearn #unlearning #unlearn #houselessnothomeless #solidaritynotcharity #revolutionnow #abolitionnow #abolitionist https://www.instagram.com/p/CbF-XU4B-HF/?utm_medium=tumblr

I firmly believe in living the revolution into being. So often it seems like people don’t know what to do to make the world a better place and ppl often give answers like vote, donate to causes, get out there and protest! But then there’s backlash bc not everyone can do those things and their efficacy is dubious.
You have asked and asked and begged the government to feed the poor, and they have not done so. But you can feed your neighbors, right? You and your neighbors can all pitch in to buy groceries, including pantry staples that will be cheap and last you all awhile, and plan to cook a meal together however often you can manage. This is cheaper, reduces food waste, reduces the workload of cooking and cleaning, brings you closer to the community, gives all of you better access to sufficient and healthy food, and most importantly ensures that you and your neighbors get fed! Maybe you live in a good desert, in the time being is there someone who has a car and could go to get communal groceries every now and again?
You can practice library socialism in your community to make sure everyone has free access to things they need. Not everyone in your neighborhood needs to own a drill, you don’t need a drill that often so why not just share a few between you?
What about the clothes that you no longer need anymore? It’s expensive to buy kids new clothes since they just grow out of them, just swap with neighbors instead.
You and your community have much more power over your municipal government than you do the larger government, get your friends and neighbors together to complain about whatever local issues you’re facing. You want a plaza, more benches, etc? Get some friends together and ask.
Mutual aid is fantastic, and I’m glad people are doing it! But it really does work best at a community level. Do you go to school or a place of worship? Those are great places to organize mutual aid. You can also organize mutual aid online, even within your community.
See how so many folks are trying to unionize right now? You can do that too. Talk to your coworkers about unionizing, get in touch with your local IWW chapter, they can help you unionize. This also puts you in community with your colleagues.
We need child care, yes! Can you set this up in your neighborhood? When are people free to look after a few kids? Are there perhaps people in your neighborhood who are unemployed/retired and can look after the kids? Maybe there’s a disabled person in your neighborhood who can’t work a capitalist job and maybe it’d be difficult for them to look after that many kids alone, but between them and maybe a retired couple and/or a stay at home mom or two you’d have a pretty solid mini daycare for free.
Same with maternity care, elderly care, care of disabled people. Maybe someone is going to be out of work for awhile and without a pay check. Can you and your community pitch in to support them?
If you do these things effectively for awhile, maybe you’ll find that fewer of you even need to do wage work. You’re providing for people directly, and every person has to depend on each other rather than on the government or our capitalist overlords.
I feel like when we talk about social change and anticapitalism, so many of you forget the importance of the communal aspect. I get that talking to your neighbors can be daunting, but you’re not in this alone and it’s worth doing, they probably will help you. They don’t even really have to be leftists themselves, you don’t have to convert people, you just have to talk to them. People do this kind of thing anyway, unintentionally all the time, I’m just suggesting that we do it intentionally and on a grand scale. It helps everyone. It also brings you closer to how you might live in a post-capitalist world. You’re not going to end capitalism by playing by their rules, and if you do what will you do then? Practice communal living where you can now instead of waiting for capitalism to end first.
