Hi! I'm still getting my feet wet with anything involving the DB fandom and wondered how shipping is usually handled around here? Like all kinds- from those who just stick to purely what's canon, to multishippers, to those into ocxcanon, to those who aren't really into ships- is the fanbase tolerant? Are certain communities more relaxed than others? Shipping is always smth I'm never sure on even if at the end of the day I end up doing my own thing and not bothering anyone

You should always do your own thing and not care what others think. How you enjoy fiction should be totally up to you. (save for maybe some extreme examples like how 50 Shades of Grey romanticizes abusive relationships)

I will warn you - if you want to get involved in the GoChi ship, you have to be careful because some people in the other fandoms (VegeBul specifically) really want everyone to think their ship is the best so they will attack positive GoChi posts and it’s honestly like an endless competition to them.

Make a post unrelated to ships talking about something you noticed about Bulma? In 3 reblogs or less, it can become a “Goku is a terrible husband” argument! But wait, there’s more, if you’re lucky, we’ll throw in an extra “Goku is an awful father and everything Vegeta did wrong has an excuse, including making his Majin-self a GOOD THING somehow!” for free!

And when the GoChi fans push back, the instigators pull the “I was threatened!” card and start playing victim and it’s really really obnoxious. Personally, I’m a creature of passion. I love debates and discussions and if I strongly disagree with you, you’ll know. So I’m in the middle and on top of the discussions and attacks against my fandom all the time. I think it’s possible to avoid it but I wouldn’t know, I don’t try lol. My anon is open and I discuss my love of GoChi openly.

There’s a few of us who are ready to defend the ship with our lives and don’t care if someone feels “””attacked””” by a long post debunking all of their arguments but on average, GoChi fans won’t say anything unless you say something on one of their posts and even then it’s usually just “please don’t say that on my posts. I disagree with everything you said and I don’t like your attitude.”

I will say that there is a section of the yaoi fanbase that’s really scary. There are some fans who will mob and attack people over minor things all at once. I’m not naming names and if some people think I’m talking about them but at the same time know that what I’m saying isn’t true, then congratulations I’m not talking about you and you haven’t seen what I’m talking about. If you try to come in and give excuses/defend that sort of attitude, I’ll be forced to assume that you know you’re guilty of it.

It was baffling to me as a multi!shipper who likes her occasional yaoi that a few Kakavege fans will fight that their ship is canon like it’s needed????? Like - I just want to enjoy it cause I’m a cis-straight girl with no shame and Goku and Vegeta are real hot, right? And based on the tags and their fics I’m pretty sure they just like it cause it’s hot, too, so the aggressive defenses they come with don’t feel necessary. Especially since, like, guys, Goku’s married to Chichi and Vegeta’s married to Bulma. I’m pretty sure KakaVege isn’t canon. Just have your fun ship for whatever reason and leave the canon ships alone.

The TruTen ship which is my “I know it’s not canon but if it were it would be adorable af and I love the image” ship is kinda empty, lol. It runs into the problem of the Seme/Uke dynamic of losing the characters, ya’know - character - in favor of “the one who tops acts like this and the one who bottoms acts like this” and somehow Goten’s haircut is directly connected to his attitude and whether or not he tops and I’m like ???????? But that’s a problem that I see in a lot of fanbases. I started seeing it first in Hetalia.

If you’re a Vegebul fan, congratulations, you are perfect and can do no wrong and everyone leaves you alone to your ship. If you make an anti-GoChi post and GoChi fans come in to defend their ship by way of discussion and debate, YOU’RE in the right and the GoChi fans are the ones who need to grow up.

I’ve seen a couple OCxCanon pairings going around but even though my own character is shipped with Goten, I’m not involved in any sort of community for that so I can’t answer that.

I know there’s plenty of possible ships for Yamcha running around, too, and, same with OCxCanon, I’m not involved with those communities.

The Krillin/18 ship has a problem of people being obsessed with 18 “deserving better” because Krillin isn’t the average idea of an attractive male but I don’t think that’s a constant problem (though I could be wrong). I think it’s just like a mosquito bite when people come in to say “18 totally wants to leave Krillin for Future Trunks!”

Having all these written out makes me realize that the biggest problem is people not realizing that ships are for fun and it’s okay if someone ships something that you don’t agree with or - hell - something that contradicts your OTP. (cough cough - GoBul fans love to demonize Chichi like it’s America’s favorite past time) You don’t need to convince anyone to ship with you to validate your enjoyment of the ship.

And if you make a post saying “I don’t think the ship works” and people come in to try to explain why they think it does then that’s okay, too!

We really need more reasonable people in the community to balance it out.
