my favourite flavour of cognitive dissonance about dean's character and people's perception of him as queer. the dean skew/omission of sam + fanonical idea of dean is so baked into their idea of the show, the show itself revolves around these ideas and these ideas are within the show, but it's just surrounded by the writers doing a bad job of conveying specifically what they want from the show. to them 4.14 is intentionally conveying something about dean, but the writers simply fucked up the way it's presented to the audience. it's like they're incapable of perceiving it as an exploration of sam and dean's relationship, and, by proxy, incapable of perceiving ideas related to affection as anything but the binary of allosexual or sexual, or compartmentalise sexuality into the existing labels
