Those are usually days he talks to family or friends, hearing from his older sister about the state of their parents’ marriage, his younger sister about the latest idiot she dumped, his friend Will or cousin Richie about someone who’s told them they deserve to go to hell for being who they are. Sometimes it’s when he himself is having a bad day, either a student isn’t putting in enough effort or he’s frustrating himself with his own shoddy practice. Somehow, Sylvia always knows, and that’s when she comes to curl up on his stomach while he couch surfs at night.

Now that he has El in his life, though, he has a human to confide his deepest secrets in instead of his cat. Still, because his girlfriend doesn’t live with him, Sylvia gets to hear the most. It’s nice to know that she’s judging him but won’t talk back.

Mike flops onto his bed and promptly registers that he hadn’t made it that morning. Gross, how am I gonna convince El that it’s a good idea to move in together if I can’t even make my own bed?

Considering this, he thinks about the rest of his apartment. He lives on the second floor of a duplex, the upright piano he gives lessons on sitting in the room right off the staircase. At the end of the hall is his bedroom, which has a large window in it and is, objectively, the best room in the house. This, coupled with the anxiety he’s felt since morning when he decided that today will be the day he asks El to move in together, catapults him out of his bed and into the bathroom, taking his dirty clothes with him to the hamper. Mike takes the quickest shower he’s ever taken, totalling a whopping three minutes under the water, then rushes back to make his bed the neatest he’s ever made it. He shoots into the piano room and does his best to pick up after his teaching method, although the room looks almost the same after he leaves it. He then makes a running jump over Sylvia, who hisses angrily and turns to look at him as he starts furiously washing dishes.

“Stop looking at me like that,” he says. “I’m cleaning up so if we come back here it’ll be good to ask El to move in.”

A harsh lights up on the sweaty faces of Paul and Marianne, stumbling now into their much-too bright apartment. Paul leans a shoulder against the door frame, and slides down slightly, watching his wife trip over the disassembled crib in the center of the living room. In the corner, Marianne braces herself against a leaning nightstand and fumbles with a small electric lamp until it casts a dim yellow glow up against her face, darkening the wrinkles there.

“Now?” Paul with his hand on the light switch.

“Yeah.”

Paul flicks off the overhead lights. The room, which should only ever be barely lit, appears much smaller now in the low lamplight. These long opaque shadows drape over the dusty coffee table and its books, and the sofa with its arms destroyed by cats now dead, and the pictures on the wall which Marianne does not look at. This place is full of habits. From the little ritual with the light switch, to the way Marianne tilts the lampshade by some imperceptible angle and casts her face with less offense. Even the conversations: all the same dialogue rehashed again and again, night after night, ever since some long gone premiere, when stage light did not butcher them.

Her face was young, but stretched tightly over too much bone. She had bright red hair that erupted and flowed down to her shoulders. Her name was Ilana. Marianne imagined herself saying the name, though she would not dare to do so out loud. The young woman had not had her bathtub recaulked, or at least that’s what she said, many many times. She was Jewish and spoke with an affect that Marianne recognized and loved in a way she could not understand.

“I haven’t recaulked it. I really should have recaulked it. Oh god.”

She retreated into her apartment, leaving the door open as an informal invitation. Marianne stepped into the doorway, but could not bring herself further. It was too bright. There were mirrors on nearly every yellowing wall, alternated with posters of Ilana in various states of peril. Her stockinged leg emerging voluptuously, miraculously, from a pit of green, surging snakes. Backed up against a stone wall in a torn lionskin chemise, fending off a lion. In a tight red bathing suit, a dark murky hand wrapped around her leg, swimming upward from a dark undersea trench to the bright open sky only a few inches above her outstretched fingertips.

Ilana reappeared from the bathroom, and noticed Marianne staring at this one.

“Oh they’re all crap. I don’t even know why I keep them around.”

Her concentration broken, Marianne realized that she had stepped well into the bright room, and for a moment could not recall exactly why she was there. Had she tripped and fallen over something, she might have remembered. Her habits did not live there.

“I’m an actress.” Ilana laughed unconvincingly. “Or I used to be. You don’t really act in horror flicks, you know? Oh you just kinda scream a lot and wait for some fella to save ya. Pays the bills, I guess.”

Marianne looked at the girl in the bathrobe that must not have been hers.

“How old are you?” Marianne tried not to look like she was staring. She was not doing a great job.

Ilana gave her a light and airy laugh, one that she had memorized and committed to habit. It was a laugh for men, one that confirmed that she was alive and there and no more. Marianne was familiar with the laugh. She would catch herself laughing this way sometimes, mostly when no one had said anything to her in a very long time. She had first heard it from her own mother, usually at funerals. It was passed down this way. It was not a young woman’s laugh. Something horrific had happened.

“You’re very um…very beautiful.” Marianne said quietly, not quite sure even if she had said it.

Ilana turned and walked back into the bathroom. “Yeah they draw you real good for the posters.”

After she left the young woman’s apartment, Marianne did not tell Paul about the girl and the posters. He would have gotten stuck-up the way he did about people who made money that way. When he asked about the ceiling, Marianne told him about the old man who lived above them who overwatered his plants. The actress had her bathtub recaulked and there was never any more water or any reason for Marianne to see her again. In fact, Marianne never went back to that room and that girl surrounded by her performance of fear, swaddled in a bathrobe that must not must-not-must-not-must-not be hers.

Paul reappears with two glasses and sits on his wife’s lap, burying his face into her neck.

“Nearly cut my pinky off just now.”

Marianne takes a sip. She used to hate drinking, always thought it was ugly.

“I was gonna put a flower in your cup, and I uh, really this is what I did, I took one of the roses you didn’t want to bring to the party, figured they wouldn’t last too long anyway seeing how old they were when we bought ‘em and I figured you wouldn’t want them and seeing as we didn’t bring ‘em to the party and all and-and-and I thought I’d put ‘em to some good use, you know? You know? And anyway I wanted to be sweet to you. I was gonna put a flower in your cup. Oh god. But I nearly cut my whole hand off.”

He sinks deeper into her lap and she rocks him back and forth, one hand on the back of his head, and the other around the glass she raises to her lips. Their bodies together cast a round tumoral shadow growing in the lamplight, and she sips her drinks. Water drips from the ceiling.

A knock at the door. Paul slinks off of Marianne’s knee and down on to the floor, where he sinks so low that he can watch the fleas crawling up errant stalks in his carpeting. Marianne lets him fall, knowing that her husband’s abject horror had never been a dependent sign of anything concrete. He would go into convulsions when the sun went down. His fear was as constant as his drink, which he still had in his hand, and which Marianne kept her eyes on, fearing too that if she were to look up at the door that someone, or something, would be knocking. Another knock. Marianne rises, knocking Paul to the floor, where he reaches up a hand that grasps nothing. He looks up at her, every essential part of him failing to see her there.

As she crosses the room, Marianne tries her best to tidy up for a guest, picking up tiny pieces of broken glass and flower, dragging the child-sized mattress frame to one corner of the room, and flicking on the overhead lights before opening the door.

The girl has changed drastically over the month. Her gown has many holes in it, and falls gracelessly off her arms like the feathers on a waterlogged bird. Marianne hardly recognizes her but for her eyes, which are still full of something impossibly wide, red, angular and glowing.

“Mind if I come in? Landlord’s running over with the key. I locked mine in my room if you can believe it. God what a night. I’ll die if I don’t get any sleep.” Marianne makes way for the young woman, who walks into the room like she would on to a set, only with a slight hobble to her step. Marianne would remember it as a fine performance.

His eyes still adjusting to the light, Paul squints at the young woman crossing towards him. It would be too much to say that he recognizes her, only that she makes him very afraid. He wishes he were a bug. He raises his glass.

“How do you do, miss?”

Paul smiles widely and notices the sweat on his forehead for the first time that night. He spreads his arms out, revealing the fraying undersides of his jacket. The girl can see right through to his undershirt.

“You’ve come to get me? I suppose.” He laughs wildly, spilling his drink everywhere. “Well I’m not going out without a fight. No you’ll have to drag me out of here. God.”

But Marianne is already guiding the girl to the kitchen.

“If you were good, you’d shut up. Come on dear. Let me get you something to drink.” Marianne says, leading Ilana into the kitchen.

The women gasp at the carnage. Wet whitish-pink rose petals cling to every piece of linoleum, some peeling and falling off the counter and on to the floor or into the sink. The stems still float in the vase on the counter, though they’ve been drowned, the skin bursting blackly with edematous swelling and lesions. There are petals in every cupboard, and in every drawer. The window above the sink is open, the pus-yellow curtains clinging to the humid windowsill, which is covered in leaves. There is blood too. She could never convince her husband that flowers could be overwatered, that in fact it was the over-caring, the nurturing element, that could kill them. She will never forgive him for that.

Ilana reaches down to the floor to pick up a piece of glass, but Marianne snatches the girl’s wrist, smiling too widely for it to mean anything at all really.

“Sweetheart you’ll hurt yourself. You don’t worry about that. I’ll clean it up. I would just like to…what would you like to drink? We have milk, I think.”

Ilana smiles at her. Marianne tried not to notice the lines on her face.

“What is your husband drinking?”

Marianne can feel her smile faltering, a weight dragging it down. Her eyes fall to the young woman’s breasts, though her gaze penetrates to the blood-stained floor beneath her. Marianne does not break character. In fact, she saves the performance, keeping her smile drawn end-to-end across her face. She reaches up for a glass, and hands it to the young woman, before reaching over the sink and drawing the curtains closed.

Your earliest memories are of sitting at your father’s feet, halfway under the table, tiny fists clenched around a toy car as men who seemed larger than life roared at a television across the room, money changing hands. The plum colored carpeting of your living room caught the wheels of your car, but the tile of the place where your father leaned over the counter and wrote checks in his tightly looping script was better, even though you were told off when the toy’s tiny plastic wheels left marks on the walls. By the time you stopped running, when you couldn’t have run any more, the monster was gone- where and since when you couldn’t have guessed. It was there, slumped against the wall of an abandoned strip mall full of shattered glass and trash trapped in dying weeds, that your mother came to you for the first time.

Fortuna smiled, and you were caught between laughing and crying, between confusion and anger, dark humor and utter exhaustion.

Going to Lupa was a better alternative than continuing to try your luck with your father, who had increasingly begun to pretend you didn’t exist. Camp Jupiter, where you weren’t chased by monsters and disappointment, was better than peeling linoleum and empty stares. The Romans welcomed you with open arms- a son of Fortuna was a good sign, a good addition to any legion, a source from which to take good favor as if it were nothing. When war came knocking, and the demigods stormed Mount Othrys like so many child soldiers, you were there. You’d thrown yourself into training, trying to dig out a place for yourself by your own merit, but you’d never be as gifted with a sword as a child of Mars, as tactically minded as one of Minerva. When you were there at the defeat of Krios, watching people you’d known for years be wounded, die, you were there as a lucky charm.

Your mother was beloved, feasts were held for her, and yet when you looked at the tattoo that held her symbol it was with a resentment that was unshakable. As the lines under your tattoo signifying your years in the legion multiplied, you surrounded them with art snaking up and down your arms that had nothing to do with your mother or the other gods and goddesses whose children were nothing but pawns in a greater game. You smothered the implication of your loyalty with flowers and vines, animals and symbols. But you didn’t bother to smother your cynicism. And all people saw was the outstretched, kind hand of luck regardless.

Kit has never been shy about his distrust of the gods. As far as he’s concerned, the entire pantheon is full of dysfunctional and manipulative egotists, and the Romans are tragically deluded in their devotion. Even before he discovered the truth of his parentage and all that that meant, he was already skeptical of luck- the thing that just so happened to be his birthright, and utterly inescapable. That his childhood was so consumed by the fickleness of fortune made him bitter from the start- when he arrived at Camp Jupiter as a long-legged fourteen year old it was with tired eyes and a prematurely jaded attitude.

His bitterness made him ambivalent for years, but since he’s gotten older it’s morphed into something harder. To let himself be buffeted around by the whims of his mother and the rest of the gods and goddesses is to let them win. Kit is no optimist, but he’s fighting for something better regardless of the fact that losing seems inevitable. He’s driven by resentment, and it could very easily be his downfall.

Entwined as his future is with the gods and goddesses as well as his fellow demigods, it’s only a matter of time that his derision of the divine sparks with someone’s quick temper. His distrust is so invasive that he’s wary of any help the gods try to extend to anyone, regardless of the situation. In terms of character growth and development, this could definitely change, but his reasons for accepting the call to arms in this quest are decidedly not born of any loyalty to his mother.

cultivated contention: I’d like to explore Kit’s interactions with the Greek demigods relating to the feud and separation that the gods created between the two groups. For him, it’s just another in a string of manipulations and lies coming from the careless pantheon, it’ll be interesting to see how he responds to this once his knee-jerk reaction to be friendly with the Greeks just to spite the gods wanes.

fundamental differences: In a world so concentrated in the godly, Kit defines himself through his distrust of the gods. I’d like to see him befriending someone who’s on this quest for all the right reasons despite this completely different worldview.

in the end, all there is is luck: Exploring Kit’s response to any sort of intervention or aid from his mother would be very interesting. Depending on the situation it could be philosophy-shifting.

I don’t remember what it feels like to live without pain. At 15, I began feeling aching, stabbing, and burning sensations in my lower back and down my legs. Swallowing a few Aleve didn’t help—in fact, nothing did. If I sit or stand for any period of time, or lift something heavy or fall, I pay for it, sometimes for weeks or months. I’ve slept on the kitchen linoleum, because the carpet felt too soft to stand.

For 17 years, I went to doctor after doctor, undergoing scans, physical therapy, and just about every “alternative” treatment that promised relief. Despite some amazing doctors and the expensive tests at their disposal, they could never see anything wrong, so I never got a diagnosis.

That is, until a couple of years ago, when a routine CAT scan finally caught a structural problem with my spine. Because of that, I qualified to have a spinal cord stimulator, an electronic device used to treat chronic pain, implanted into my back. Although I was scared to go under the knife, I was more than willing to become a cyborg in order to find even partial relief. And this type of therapy might also be able to help some of the 100 million Americans who suffer from chronic pain.

According to a 2011 report from the non-profit National Academy of Medicine (formerly known as the Institute of Medicine), chronic pain affects 1.5 billion people worldwide. That’s 20 percent of all humans on Earth, more than those with heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined, according to Abbott Laboratories. And in many cases, doctors can’t pin down a culprit.

“When neural circuits all work, it’s like a symphony,” says Dr. Allen Burton, medical director of neuromodulation at Abbott. “But sometimes, somebody inherits a bad gene, or gets injured, or something nobody knows goes amiss.” As a result of this unknown cause, certain neural circuits might start firing over and over again. Our brains think this repeated signal indicates a continuing problem. “All of a sudden, instead of having normal sensation, you have pain, or a terrible ongoing sensation that won’t go away,” Burton says.

There are many kinds of chronic pain. Sometimes, as in my case, pain pills really do help, but for other conditions, opiates just aren’t as effective as other options. So the medical establishment, and their patients, have long sought more effective pain relief without them. A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) is one of those treatments.

A SCS works by overriding the pain signals your body sends to your brain. My doctor, Raimy Amasha at Austin’s Capitol Pain Clinic, put it like this: When someone hits their funny bone, almost universally, they’ll reach over to rub their hurt elbow because it creates a nice sensation that distracts from the ache. “Your brain can only focus on so many things,” he says. “When feedback is going to the brain, the body focuses more on that pleasant feeling and essentially pushes out the channel of pain sensation.”

Chronic pain affects 1.5 billion people worldwide. That’s 20 percent of all humans on Earth, more than those with heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined.

When a recent study examined data from opioid-using patients who received an SCS, it found that subjects who removed their system went on to take higher average daily doses of opioids than those who continued the therapy. Although this particular study comes from Abbott Laboratories, the same company that produces spinal-cord stimulators, less-invested sources are also optimistic.

“This is a new frontier for treating spinal cord injuries, in terms of being able to bypass the damaged area and restore capabilities and function,” says neurosurgeon Ali Rezai, Associate Dean of Neuroscience and Director of the Neurological Institute at The Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center.

That’s not to say that electrical stimulation will completely eliminate opiate use. While these drugs can cause debilitating addictions, withholding them from the people who need them most can induce incredible damage. My pain has sometimes been so great that I needed opioid medication to prevent me from sobbing and writhing and allow me to get out of bed in the morning. But needing help to control my pain does not make me an addict.

Still, doctors have been reluctant to prescribe the medication I needed for several reasons: I seemed too young to require such strong treatment, my pain got worse at night when they couldn’t see it, and I tried to maintain a positive affect (because, as a woman who grew up in the South, I was raised to smile and be polite—even when I feel at my worst).

Even with a prescription, opiates are far from the easy answer. On top of the odyssey of finding and funding health insurance, I have to pay hundreds of additional dollars to get my urine tested three to four times per year. Many states require these random reviews to demonstrate that prescription opiate users are taking their medication correctly. While Texas, where I live, doesn’t out-and-out require urine testing, it does legislate that doctors periodically “consider” doing so—and any physician who declines “must document in the medical record his or her rationale for not completing such steps.” Every patient I know is undergoing urine testing.

It costs far more than that to see my pain doctor monthly, which I must do in order to walk away with a prescription—even if my condition has not changed. And the landscape is bleak: Pain clinics are closing in droves, but nobody is accepting new patients. That means people like me have to drive hours to reach our monthly appointments.

For many, it’s not practical to get rid of opioids entirely. But it sure would be nice to be able to reduce my reliance on them, when and how my doctor and I decide.

That’s where my all-important CAT scan came in. In July 2015, Amasha told me that the two most important things on my scan were lumbosacral radiculitis and lumbosacral spinal stenosis. The bones of my spine rub against and pinch the nerves that lead to the rest of me. That causes throbbing, burning, and stabbing sensations.

For the first time in my life, I finally had a name for what was causing this pain. Even better, I eventually realized that these results put a spinal cord stimulator on the table as a real option.

Before getting a long-term implant, we had to make sure it would work for me. First, I had to do three lumbar injections of steroids to make sure the stim would be placed in the right spot. Then I got to take a trial run with the stimulator technology.

This was a try-before-you-buy treatment. Using X-ray fluoroscopy to guide a hollow needle, they insert electrodes into the space between bone and spinal cord, positioning this trial lead over specific nerves they think are causing the pain. The wires exit the body and connect to an external battery.

Doctors tape everything down very well, caution you not to shower (apologies to my husband), and give you a controller and a weird corset-like brace to hold everything in place. Then they send you home to see if it helps. I asked Timothy Deer, president and chief executive officer of The Center for Pain Relief in Charleston, West Virginia, about my chances. In his experience, someone with my diagnosis has about a 70 percent chance of the trial alleviating pain; however, he said if it did help, the odds are more like 90 percent that the actual surgery will work.

Still, I cautioned myself not to hope too much. Spinal-cord stimulation isn’t the first treatment to use electrical currents for pain relief—it’s not even the first or second I’d already tried. A very simple version of this technology, called a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) unit, is available over-the-counter. (Some entrepreneurs have even created a specialized TENS unit to tackle menstrual pain.) Unfortunately, none of these less-invasive electrical techniques worked for me—electroacupuncture (where an electric current is run between acupuncture needles) was the only treatment that seemed to help at all, and even then, the benefits plateaued too quickly.

So I started my stim trial. For the next week, when I noticed the pain breaking through, I pushed a button. Instead of the pain, I felt the weird pulse of electrical current in my nerves.

Unlike my previous electrical experiences, this device actually drowned out my pain. It sent regular waves of electrical pulses through my nerves in a pattern called “tonic stimulation.” The most commonly used type of waveform technology, this feels like a continuous buzzing, or the tingles of a foot that’s fallen asleep. That’s not the most pleasant sensation, but I would trade suffering for vague buzziness any day.

Once my medical team knew a stimulator could help me, they pulled the wires out of my spine and we began talking about which product would work best for my specific issues. Abbott, Boston Scientific, and Medtronic are all manufacturing this type of device, each with its own pros and cons.

Each model has the stim itself in the spine, connected via a small wire to a small battery pack that doctors place under the fat of the hip. (I can actually reach back and feel the wire running under my skin.) Some of these battery packs can recharge wirelessly about once a week. Other models eschew rechargeables in favor of a cell that won’t need to be replaced for seven or eight years. Who knows what the pain-management landscape will look like then?

All the information felt a little overwhelming. “Because of the opiate crisis, we’re going to see more spending by investors to enhance our field farther,” says Deer. “The whole field of pain relief is better right now that it’s ever been.” That also means I had an abundance of SCS options.

After two months of research, I finally chose Abbott’s Proclaim system for a few reasons: First and foremost, my insurance covered it. It lasts up to 8 years before the battery dies (only 15 percent of SCSs have this option), it can safely go through an MRI scanner, and it accepts remote software upgrades. That means I won’t have to undergo surgery each time the technology improves. Plus, it lets you control your spinal stimulator through an iPod! (And if the iPod fails, they give you a comically large, U-shaped magnet to use as a last-resort “off” switch.)

But there was a final factor that elevated the Proclaim: It could apply a so-called burst waveform that I kept hearing the FDA would approve “any day now.” This pattern would allow me to avoid the buzzy, tingling sensations that had been the SCS norm. According to Amasha and my Abbott rep, burst stimulation better mimics the way your nerves naturally send and receive signals to make their current feel like nothing at all.

“In the last two years, neuroscience has made more progress than in all of recorded history toward understanding neural circuitry, how thoughts are processed, and different brain-disease states,” says Burton. “This burst stimulator fits into that progress: We’re right on the cusp of taking the knowledge that these scientists are getting and translating it into treatments that help people.”

Surgery day came and went, followed by a few days of recovery. Finally, I returned to Amasha’s office, terrified but hopeful, to have my stim turned on for the first time. There, my husband and I met with our Abbott representative, expecting to experience the tonic waveform I’d used in my trial.

“Would you like to try the burst waveform? It just got approved by the FDA,” he said, adding that I’d be the first person in the Austin, Texas area to use this technology. He pulled out an iPad and started tapping away at his Clinician programing app. Within minutes, he had turned on my stim and handed me the sixth-generation iPod Touch that would, from that point forward, control the tech in my back. (I immediately dubbed mine the SpinePod.)

You know how you feel when you drink a shot of espresso, or your Advil kicks in, or you stand up straight and square your shoulders? Imagine that sensation of relief, but confined to your lower back. Turning on the burst stimulation in my device makes me feel like my foundations have shifted to a more secure footing. It feels like nothing—but a nothing that pushes the pain down.

Other painkillers distance me from the pain or cushion me from it, and that’s valuable. But it’s always lurking behind me. This isn’t like that at all. Unlike with the other treatments, there’s no promise of future agony. The SCS folds my pain up like complex origami, creasing and accordioning.

More than one year later, the SCS continues to banish much of my pain. The only side effect was that it also improved my mood—more than could be explained by just a lack of pain. The week after I began to use my spinal stimulator, my husband commented, “I don’t know if it’s the Burst or not, but you seem calmer than I’ve ever seen you.” According to a study assessing the Burst waveform, “It is specifically capable of influencing the affective/attentional components of pain.” In other words, the effect on my mood is real.

But in my delight over the effectiveness of the SCS, I’m still well aware that I’m incredibly lucky to have this pain treatment option. My doctors happened to see something on a CAT scan for the first time ever; I found a good pain-management doctor who really listens to me and treats me as an equal; I had pretty good insurance (a huge concern, especially for women and people with preexisting conditions); and all the tests and trials drew to an end right as the FDA approved the burst waveform. Most of all, my family and I had enough money. I got to try out all those treatments, pay for the diagnostic injections, and purchase the back brace, cane, and absurdly expensive medication I needed. Insurance covered the six-figure stim, but I had the resources to meet my ridiculous deductible before that happened. Many people lack those resources.

Even for me, the battle is not over. Since this surgery I’ve actually had another disc herniate, complicating everything. My spine isn’t cured, and I still hurt all the time. But the pain is far more controlled, and I can function much better at my current level of discomfort. Since getting the stim, I got married, started a new part-time job advocating for people in chronic pain, and I feel like I can cautiously, but realistically, try to plan a life. For the first time in a long time, tomorrow looks better than yesterday.
