“what are we?” You stare at Leon, two of you sitting at the campus coffee shop as he blinks at you.

“Best friends? Are we not?”

“I don’t know, Leon. I haven’t felt stability in our friendship in a long time. You haven’t felt like a best friend in a long time.” You stare down at your drink, humming. “I’d like to stop being friends if that’s possible—“

“you’re going to throw away so many years just because you lack—“

“you know that better than anyone.” You bite your tongue, refusing to look him in the eye. “You know that if I can’t find stability in a friendship that I refuse to call them my best friend. You were my best friend. You should know this like I knew everything about you.”

“I know, but it’s just.”

You can feel his eyes on you.

“can’t you look me in the eye one more time?”

“I have not the.” You swallow. “strength. Thank you, Leon. I’d never been so happy being friends with anyone. I’m wishing you well on your future.”

Leon watches as you take your bag and leave, and he suddenly remembers how badly you had cried the first time you had to cut someone you considered a best friend off for the sake of your mental health. He wonders if he’d ever imagine that he’d cause you the same distress one day.

He wonders just how long you had been thinking over ending the friendship for you to have looked so unaffected.

Not that he could’ve known. He hasn’t talked to you in forever anyway.
