My introduction to you all
So my wife suggested that I should start using tumblr to document my journey through Fasting and living a Ketogenic lifestyle while only eating one meal a day. This is day 14 into this lifestyle and the results so far are great! My journey started 10 years ago when I was overweight and a friend of mine introduced me to MMA (mixed martial arts) I was 21 at the time and weight over 100kg at 1m78cm tall with barely any muscle. I remember walking into the first training session and saying to myself : "Don't give up no matter what" Trust me when I say this... I was a look out of shape that I felt embarrassed for myself... I kept thinking: how did this happen? When did became so unfit? So I made the promise to myself to train and compete in 1 amateur fight. At the end of the workout I went to speak with the coach and told him, I want to compete! What do I need to do? His words where: for starters you need to cut weight, how much do you weight? He asked me and I replied over 100kg (looking at his eyes and reading between the lines I got the message of: yes you need some serious weight lo before that happens boy) He replied, someone of your weight would have to compete at heavy weight but the guys there are huge monsters. You will need to drop down to lightheavy weight which is 85kg. I said, ok so how do I do it? And in that moment I got the best and worse advice in my life. He told me to start running 30m everyday (for someone that knew nothing about exercise I just took his word and so I started, everyday religiously I would run 30m then row for 30m then bike for 30m thinking that I am over achieving and thinking this is healthy and the right thing to do. Without knowing any better it got the job done in 4 weeks I was down to 85kg! And with so much to learn I asked again, whats the next weight class down? He said 75kg which is middleweight. By this time I had made friends with the guys at the MMA. One of them trained for strongman competitions, one was a Powerlifter and another was Bouncer of a local nightclub, all of which would weight train at the gym facility from the leisure centre we would all train MMA at. So I started hanging out with them and training with them, learning how to squat, deadlift, clean and jerk, bench press etc... I also noticed that they all did cardio only after weight training (Which now I know why) Another 4 weeks go by and I am at 75kg. Again thinking this was too easy. Reason being I had been under eating for over 2 months at this stage plus doing a ton of exercise. I was weak and not building any muscle, I was just becoming a "skinny fat person" I always thought if I lost weight I would get a 6 pack but that couldn't be further then the truth. My daily meals would consist of 1 banana, 1 salad of tomatoes and lettuce plus 1 or 2 fish fillets and a couple of eggs.( This I got from my friend who was cutting weight for his 1st fight and I took something that was meant to be done short term and I took it to the extreme and made it long term) My sister came to visit me during Xmas and I had dropped to 65kg which was the next weight class down (Lightweight) and she said that I looked unhealthy and anorexic, she said that I should start weight training and put some size on. My first fight was 12 weeks away. At this stage I was sparing on a weekly basis both stand up and rolling. Unfortunately I got my shoulder dislocated while rolling in a friendly spar. Once a shoulder pops out it becames very easy to get dislocated again. I had to gave up on the training plus the gym for weeks. I was still committed to be good and successful at something, if it wasn't going to be MMA then powerlifting became my next aim. As soon as I recovered I started training again, this time focused on Personal bests every week which became very addictive I must say! Watching your body grow and getting stronger is an awesome and empowering feeling! The bad side of this was my ego... Which got bigger and bigger every week with the focus on the weights going up instead of learning the correct techniques and proper form... Unfortunately once again I injured myself while squatting 170kg at 75kg bodyweight. Needless to say it was too much weight too quick for my lowerback... once again I had to give up on powerlifting and give my body the time to repair the damage that I had inflicted. Once I recovered I started bodybuilding instead which allowed me to train with proper form, and stay injury free for the next 3 years! I put on 10kg of pure muscle, I was 85kg and more muscular and stronger then I had ever been before! I was happy and everything was going well in my life! I even had plans to compete in a Mens Body Beach competition! However another setback was around the corner, this time through no fault of my own... I was a passenger in a car and on a cold winter night the vehicle spinned on ice and we ended up in the fields upside down... I injured my back and neck as a result of this and fell into a depressive state, lost my job as a result and started seeking confort in food. I went from being fit at 85kg to 115kg in a matter of months. This was the heaviest I have ever been! This all happened in 2014 Fast foward 4 years, I got married and we had 2 boy ( I had 1 boy and 1 girl from previous relationships and my wife had 1 daughter from her previous relationship) Being a father of 5 and about to be 6 reality hitting in the face like a ton of bricks, I had lost all my confidence, I couldn't play with my boys and I would never bother cooking for me, the take away restaurants and fast food restaurants were much attractive options to me at this stage. With the doctor telling me that my cholesterol levels were so high I knew I had to do something if I wanted to be around to see my kids growing! I knew I could not do a 360 degree turn from where I was so I did my research. I came accross intermittent fasting. After watching hundreds of videos on the topic I thought ok so I'll start with 16h of fasting and eat whatever I want in 8h... Yes whatever I wanted which included kebabs, Chinese, Macdonald, burguer king etc you get the picture... The first day was horrible I was the kind of person that would eat the first thing I could see when I got out of bed. I made myself wait to 4pm to have my meal because I knew that me and the wife would more then likely order some takeaway for our dinner. And so we did... I made sure I ended my meal before midnight. Fast fo ward 4 weeks and I go for my weight in... I had lost 7kg and I was so shocked, how did something so simple such as restricting my eating window could have such a profound effect on my physiology and mental health, this gave me confidence to take my next step! I thought what if I run and or join the gym? And so I did 3 weight training sessions a week plus 3 running session a week and 4 weeks later I had lost another 7kg! People started to notice and complementing me on my weight loss. I started noticing how much more energy I had to play with my kids etc... Then I looked for the next step which was the warrior style of intermittent fasting which is 20h fasting a day and a 4h window. At this stage I had exercised my discipline towards respecting my fasting windows. Another 4 weeks and I dropped another 7kg. I was down to 95kg at this stage and pretty happy with my transformation. However still no abs to be seen :) I know this might make me sound or look gain however its more of a mental target that I set out to achieve much like the promise to compete in MMA for example. I always set myself a goal to strive for! Being 95kg I stalled my weight loss, so I looked for my next step... I came accross OMAD (ONE MEAL A DAY) 23h fasting 1h eating So I started doing that and eating like an animal on my 1h window. I think I lost 1kg in 2 weeks or so and I was not happy with that so I decided to challenge myself to do a 7 day Ketogenic one meal a day. I have vlogged on a daily basis on my Facebook page this journey and I lost 4kg in my first week and I am now at the end of week 2. So this is where I started, what I achieved, the setbacks the mental health problems and how I am working to overcoming this. My page on facebook is called intermittent fasting warrior Thank you for reading
