Noir

thank you!! this is an extremely excellent concept and i must expose myself by admitting that i don't 100% understand what noir is. i used to read and watch a lot of it when i was a kid but i never really understood what made noir noir. anyway. i read the wikipedia article this morning. if i have missed the mark entirely please feel free to let me know.

i'm going to say this takes place in LA

L is a private eye with a little office on the second floor of a really shitty bun/bao shop. he's got a little brass nameplate and everything. he lives in a horrible underground apartment where he is always behind on the rent with a hideous, mean cat he saved from dumpster

light is an old flame he once helped get away with a horrific yet justified crime. light repays him by slinking around and reminding him of just how liquid his morals can be. L describes him as being like 'a cat he'd rescued from the river and nursed back to health, and who's forgotten who had enacted pity on whom.' he is the only person who L's real cat likes. sometimes L comes home and he's sitting on the floor, feeding the animal from his hand

i feel like matt would make a good noir character. anyway. matt is L's assistant. he thinks of himself as being very jaded and of L as being extremely naive but this is just not true; the difference is matt thinks people invariably behave selfishly but L knows people enact cruelty on each other for no reason at all. they do it just for the sake of it, even when it makes their own lives worse.

L, light & matt spend a lot of time sitting in L's tiny office smoking, eating bao and having philosophical discussions while poring over evidence. light is always uninvited but they always let him in

their moral stances are like this. L: people are inherently amoral and will help or hurt each other without meaning. matt: people are inherently evil and will always do the worst thing. light: individuals are inherently bad but humanity is inherently good & can be saved with just punishment

L drinks instant coffee while he's on a case but brews it pour-over when he isn't. he brews it hideously dark but takes it with three creams and three sugars.
