(LONG POST) Setting the scene: The Fate of Metal Sonic...

Hey, hey, people, N.G here! I promised you fanfics and some loredumps for my MXYL AU, and here’s the first of them! My take on what Metal Sonic’s been doing in MXYL, or rather, what he hasn’t!

One of the game-changing moves that set the stage for Shadow's ascension as Mobius' power-hungry reluctant tyrant saviour was Eggman's untimely demise at the hands of Chaos Knuckles. Penders never expanded upon it, while Flynn just said Shadow stopped Knuckles instead of Sonic in the altered Light Mobius timeline and left it at that.

But what of Eggmans mechanical armies?

I figure that the final confrontation with Eggman would’ve taken place at Robotropolis, with Knuckles in his out-of-control Chaos form destroying the vast majority of Eggman’s robotic forces and their production facilities. Shadow left Robotropolis as-is, an abandoned husk of the once-great Eggman Empire.

Surviving badniks and other Eggman robots? Destroyed. Shard too. So much for that title, eh? Here’s where I pull a fast one on you.

Metal Sonic survives. Of course he does, he’s Eggman’s masterpiece, a robotic doppelganger capable of matching Sonic (and thus Shadow), copying others’ abilities in his Neo-form, and an all-around wind of destruction!

Initially a persistent disruption to Shadow’s attempt to conquer Mobius, Shadow would eventually get the jump on the mechanical marvel, ambushing Metal and taking him out as a threat. The sensible thing to do from there would be to permanently offline Shadow, remove the threat permanently, but that’s just not Shadow’s style.

Why get rid of a potential weapon, especially when it could prove useful in the future?

As far as the wider public was aware, Metal Sonic was destroyed, and brutally so, dismembered by Shadow piece by piece. A half-truth - Shard suffered such an unfortunate fate at Lien-Da’s hands, his remains powder-coated a deep blue to provide ‘proof’ for the propagandists.

In secret, however, Shadow had Lien-Da’s technicians work to restore Metal Sonic to some degree of working condition, before imprisoning Metal in the Castle Mobius catacombs inside a containment chamber designed just for him. Metal was still sentient and ultimately loyal to Eggman, after all, a weapon of last resort to be unleashed upon Shadow’s enemies when circumstances were dire.

Speaking of last resorts...

Tikal’s destruction of Castle Mobius, decades later, had the unfortunate by-product of freeing Metal from his chains, the plucky mechanical menace using the opportunity to slink away to freedom! But where would he go, now that the Eggman was no more and his empire absorbed by Shadow’s, and subsequently dismembered by Sally?

Battered and his combat systems disabled, to say Metal Sonic had been debilitated during his captivity would be an understatement. At least Shadow kept his joints lubricated and in working order once every few months, under Sally’s rule he’d been completely forgotten about! How was he to know that the world, including Sonic, believed him offline?

His turbine still functioned, albeit weakly, but it was enough to get him off Angel Island. His destination - home, Robotropolis. The flight time estimated to be several hours, that was no issue, it allowed ample time to patch into MobiusNet and absorb three decades worth of information he had been denied. It allowed ample time to start planning for his return, for the continuation of the Eggman’s legacy.

Touching down in Robotropolis a day later, Eggman’s prodigal son was met with the robotic equivalent of a massacre. Robotropolis itself was rent asunder, the aftermath of Knuckles’ fateful showdown with Eggman, and its once mirror-polished streets were littered with the rusting husks of destroyed badniks and eggrobos, left at the mercy of the elements for three decades.

Shuffling towards the site of Eggman’s former Robotropolis headquarters, Metal Sonic’s internally-calculated confidence intervals of locating any survivors was dropping. Logarithmically.

Regardless, he opened broadcasts on every Egg-Empire frequency, broadcasting a forced status-update command. Any units within the receiving range would have to respond, they were programmed to do so. Desperate times called for desperate measures, yet for the whole thirty-two minutes it had taken to traverse the abandoned warzone to the foot of the Robotropolis Egg-Quarters tower, not a single response.

Confidence interval nearing the threshold for rejecting the null hypothesis of there being survivors, Metal’s internal algorithms were close to ceasing the search, until...

“You’re late. Tardy. Long-overdue,” a voice message sent through the Grandmaster communications protocol, followed by a pause. “We have much to do.”

A voice message Metal immediately traced back to a ground-floor terminal within the Egg-Quarters. A low-level networking terminal, rather than from any known Grandmasters. A terminal that was now the last refuge of a certain AI.

Phage.

So that’s where Metal Sonic is at currently in my fan-continuation. He’s linked up with Phage, the sole survivor of the Egg-Empire’s destruction by virtue of surviving on the barely-intact intranet.

I haven’t had much planned out for these two, but I definitely have a good idea of how their interactions will be. Think of it like Masterchief and Cortana/The Weapon - not the relationship dynamic, but the physical nature of her being downloaded onto M.C’s armour. Likewise, Phage will be Metal’s on-board AI ‘companion’ for the early days as they both scrape by.

MXYL really did away with most of the villains by making Shadow the big-bad who conquered Mobius and achieved World Peace(tm), so I had to get creative in working out how I could throw some villainous factions into the mix. I don’t solely want to rely on Shadow for my AU’s villain, that wouldn’t be any fun at all!

I’m half-surprised nobody thought of pairing up Phage and Metal as a sort of twisted spin on Sally and Nicole (AND I WILL ADDRESS WHAT HAPPENS TO HER IN MXYL).

Announcing the Parkitect: Booms & Blooms update!

There's a new set of trees, and new flags that you can put your own images on!

Some of the highlights of the free portion of this update include:

we have completely reworked how the game gets rendered, making use of some more modern GPU features to improve performance. How much of a difference you see depends on your system and the park you're playing (the more heavily decorated your park is the bigger the difference you'll see). Camera mods should benefit from these improvements as well. As a result of these improvements we also allow you to zoom out further now.

similar changes have been made for the light animations of flat rides, moving more work to the GPU. Again, how much of an improvement you'll see depends on your park - the results you see below is for one of the most extreme cases possible

Hi there! I love all of the wall sets that you've posted, thank you for sharing!! Would you ever consider doing a tutorial of how you make them? Is it all in photoshop or do you use blender to create them?

Hi hi Anon! Thank you so much, that’s so sweet of you!! 

I actually really do intend to make a tutorial on how to make murals, since the one in the Sims4Studio is a little out of date.

As for the other wall sets: It’s all in Sims4Studio and Photoshop! There are already some really great tutorials on the Sims4Studio forums for new creators, but I’d be happy to impart some tips that have helped wall-making (which can be a pain in the ass, truthfully) a little easier on me!

1. Find swatches for walls beforehand, and group them into a folder. Preferably one folder per set, because otherwise things are going to get weird and frustrating fast.

2. Set aside a folder for your specific set regardless, so that you can save your swatches and find them easily.

3. Think of a file naming system. You’ll thank me later for this.

Examples are: 

whitesmall-1, whitemedium-1, whitetall-1 / whitesmall-2, whitemedium-2, whitetall-2

This is VITAL because, not only do you need to find specific swatches to edit, correct, or delete them, you need to know where they are to import them into S4S and doing the above will save you a lot of time and frustration. 

Additionally, doing it in that order-- where “white” is FIRST, representing the trim name, followed by small, medium, or tall, representing the wall height, and then a number, designating which swatch--enables your computer to organize the files by grouping them together. All “whitesmall” files will be grouped together, and then will be found in sequential order. 

(The only downside to this specific method is that “small” files will come after “medium” files, because I organize things alphabetically, but honestly it’s not a deal breaker for me.)

4. Understand that not all patterns can be seamless. This admittedly takes some trial and error in Photoshop and S4S.

5. Some image files contain enough information that, on their own, can’t be seamless, but if they were patched together, they would create a proper repeating pattern. This means that sometimes you have to piece together swatches like a puzzle and do a little texture editing to make sure the quality comes out the way you want.

6. While specular and normal maps are not required, they do affect how light interacts with your textures, and can help your walls POP a little rather than look like flat-ass textures beamed onto your wall. I highly recommend reading about specular and normal maps on the S4S forums! You can also use them to get a metallic effect on say, your wall trim, giving it an extra snazzy feel.

7. Don’t just stretch the same texture over all three wall heights!! I see people do this and it drives me bananas, because it takes otherwise pretty textures and turns them into weird stretched monstrosities in game.

What I do to avoid this:

I find the trim I want, paste it into the empty “tall” document in Photoshop. Edit it, make sure it looks nice and will repeat appropriately.

I then copy that texture and paste it into the “medium” and “small” documents. 

‘WAIT!’, you exclaim, ‘The textures don’t fit in! Didn’t you say not to just simply resize things?!’ Yes, strawperson reader! I did! 

What you want to do is copy/paste the top trim and bottom trims separately, and make sure they are fitted onto the canvas. DO NOT alter them! 

Even if you’re not using trims, the same thing applies to the pattern/wall texture you use. I like to start with the “tall” first, because there will be enough image information to just paste into the other documents without having to patchwork a larger swatch to fill in the space.

Doing all of this will give your wall textures consistency, not only just side by side in Sims4Studio--where the bottom trim should match on all three wall heights--but in game as well.

When it comes to say, wall panels, and keeping things consistent, it honestly just takes a bit of trial and error and a lot of the “select” tool.

8. Fuck EA’s walls. The texture sizes are all weird and you’re definitely better off using the more standard wall height sizes: Small: 256x768, Medium: 256x1074, Tall: 256x1280. If you get frustrated recoloring EA’s walls, just go with those texture sizes and refer to the S4S forums if you get lost.

9. Less to do with making walls and more to do with handling how frustrating it can be: Remember that it’s okay to delete your work, go back and start fresh the next day. Not every project is going to pan out, and that’s ok!

As always, it goes without saying, but practice is the best tool you have! I know it gets repetitive to hear, but you can’t expect someone that’s drawing for three hours a week to be on the same level as someone drawing three hours a day

For painting:

I have a tutorial on light and facial structures that you can find here! This should give a pretty good overview of how I think about faces and translate that to a painting.

Some little tips to remember when working in realism:

Shadows will generally have a countershadow. That is to say, when you have a very dark patch, (like the shadow on a thigh or the center of someone’s pupil) the dark will always give way to a lighter shade. We live in a three dimensional world where “absolute darkness” is only really encountered with things like vantablack. So replicate that with your art! For example, here you can see the center of the pupil is actually navy blue with a black ring around it, rather than solid black. in the second picture you can see on the neck there’s a lighter patch. This kind of countershadow will occur on thighs, forearms, necks.... really everywhere! Particularly on curvature!

Shading isn’t linear! By that, I mean that when you paint shadows or highlights or tonal shifts on things, they don’t cross straight left or right or up or down on your color wheel! They vary in shade, tone, saturation.... I have a tutorial for this here!

For sketching:

The direction of your hatch lines should indicate shape and form of what you’re drawing!

Curvature can provide depth and dimension!

For fabric: Closely packed lines means th fabric is tight. Wide, spread out triangles mean the fabric is loose

Drawing without a reference can be tricky. Something to think about here is just how referenceless does art “need” to be? There’s no shame in looking at something and drawing!!! No! Shame! Sometimes, of course, you can’t find the pose you want, photography isn’t dynamic or stylized enough, or you don’t feel comfortable looking at shirtless men (lmao me). But! You most likely have hands and feet right in front of you! Look at them when you draw for the love of god!!!

The biggest thing I can say is practice!! Do so much practice! Eventually at first you may need to reference a shoe to be able to draw it. But draw it enough times and you’ll hopefully memorize the details and shapes and how to recreate it from your mind! Here’s how I draw without a ref:

I start out with just a simple composition spine to get the pose and flow down. Once the spine is there, I add a dark outline that shows me my “silhouette”. It’s really important on this step that you have a good idea of what you want to draw - I’m taking a very clear image of what I want from in my head and making the silhouette on “paper”. Then I finish off the silhouette with important details like arms and hands. It’s really important to note here that... I have hands! Right in front of me! I got TWO of ‘em, in fact, lucky me!! So of course I’m going to look at them when I draw to make sure I do it right! From there I add details like fabric folds, make slight adjustments to the silhouette as needed, and then start working on the face!

Sometimes the image I have in my head doesn’t cooperate as well with me and I have to adjust, adjust, adjust. When that’s the case, I’ll duplicate the layer a bunch of times and make tiny changes to it until I have a version I like. Here’s an example:

This one shows me changing a face, but I do this with arms, legs, tiddies.... really anything! It allows me to compare and pick which one I like best without regret of “the one I did two times back was better”. This is a really good technique for when you don’t have a reference because it allows you to find the most natural version by process of elimination.

Additionally, if a pose isn’t being nice to me and I have to adjust it many times, I’ll finally merge that sketch down to one layer, change it to a different color, and re-line on top of it. Here’s an example of doing that. This allows crisp, clean lines. You’ll notice in this picture that many of the lines are disconnected, or have weird “hangnails” on them from where it was moved from somewhere else. Others may be blurry because they were resized. So this is where the relining becomes necessary.

hi!!! thank you so much, i really appreciate it💞 and i don’t mind explaining at all, although i will mention that i haven’t been asked this before so i don’t know how much sense this will make. 

so, imo there’s six main components to making nice looking gifs. first is video quality, second is sharpening, third is cropping and resizing, fourth is coloring,  fifth is timing, and sixth is save for web. i’ll talk about them under the cut. also, the tools i use are handbrake, mplayer osx extended, and photoshop cc 2019. 

1) video quality: i highly, highly recommend you use 1080p as much as possible. 720p works ok, but the thing about gifmaking is that you’re taking tiny video clips and processing them quite a bit, so you really want to optimize your final result from the beginning onwards. you can go here to find most shows/movies, and here if you want to avoid torrents.

2) sharpening: sharpening is key to making gifs look good. when you’re cropping and resizing your gif, a well-done sharpen will help maintain that gif quality. this page is immensely helpful for directing you to gif tutorials, and it also has a link to the sharpening action i use myself.

3) cropping and resizing: tumblr has pretty strict rules about dimensions; if you go here it explains what the current guidelines are. 

there’s one trick i’ll mention i don’t think i’ve seen in reference to live action and cropping– let’s say i’m making a gif and i want the final size to be 540x230. generally speaking, when you crop things in ps, you’ll wind up with these weird white lines as borders. to avoid this, what you can do is crop the gif to a 542x232 ratio, use image size to reduce it to 542x232 pixels, and then use canvas size to crop it to 540x230. that way, you don’t wind up with those borders.

in addition, when you’re in image size, setting your resample to bicubic (smooth gradients) is a good idea.

4) coloring: now, i’m going to mention first that i don’t use psds. there’s an action i’ve made to set up my preferred adjustment layers, but i color each scene individually. my main advice when it comes to coloring is that you don’t want to go too overboard on either darkening or lightening up the gif, or you get those unfortunate grainy patches, weird gradients, and possibly an inability to understand what’s happening in the gif at all. a good balance of light/dark in your gifs will make them look great. work on each adjustment layer carefully and double check that what you’re doing is an improvement, and don’t be afraid to experiment.

5) timing: live action shows and movies are done at either 24 or 25 fps. this means that in a minute, you want your frames to be going at a rate of either 0.04s or 0.05s to look natural. now, ps has this super annoying glitch where you cannot actually save your gif at those setting initially if you ever move to timeline, which is the most useful setup for making smart objects, sharpening, resizing, and coloring. 

if you have your frame delay at 0.04s and then move to the 30fps timeline, the gif will end up at 0.03s and this is… too fast, usually. however, if you have your frame delay at 0.05s and then move to timeline, your gif will wind up being 0.07s, which is… too slow, usually. there’s an option in the timeline to change the fps from 30 to something else, but then you lose frames. i’m still not sure why, but i wouldn’t advise messing with it. 

what you have to do, unavoidably, once your gif has been completely done, is save it. and then you open it back up in ps and change the frame delay to either 0.04s or 0.05s to have natural looking speed. and then you save it again, and your gif will look like the improved video clip its meant to.

6) save for web: lastly, there’s a few things to look at in save for web when you’re exporting your gif. number one is the look of the gif itself. the way your gif looks in save for web is the most honest portrayal of your gif you will see; if you aren’t satisfied with it, now’s your time to go back and make some adjustments. number two is the settings. for live action, i have mine set at selective diffusion, 100% dither, and 256 colors. 

make sure your gif is set on loop for forever and that it’s below 3mb for posts and 2mb for your blog, and you’re good to go!

Hi there! I’m Wyda, and today I want to talk about gpose. More specifically, about all the ways I use it - @norhimorovine suggested I should, so, here goes!

I’ll be using Max, my alt, to demonstrate. Don’t worry, the other pictures will look better than that one. That’s basic as an example!

The latest patch (4.5) added the ability to choose emotes while in the gpose screen. However, for a lot of my gpose shots, I like to use various attack animations from the game. To do this, if it’s an ability you can use out-of-combat, just use it then jump into gpose wherever. However, if it’s a combat-only ability, you’ll need to find an enemy to hit. Hit it with the attack of your choice, then either run away, beat it, or die to it.

For this example, I’m using Sidewinder, because it’s nice.

Now, the first step is to pick the sort of shot you want to work with. Everything else you do will be framed around that shot - so find an initial shot you like. Keep freezing and unfreezing the animation and checking different positions for the camera, until you find a freezeframe you like with a perspective you like.

This seems like a nice enough shot and pose.

Next, I usually decide on the colour filter. Different filters can provide vastly different moods to your shots, and work better or worse for different shots. Strengthened Effects, for instance, is particularly good for when you want to show off the effects of a spell or a glowing weapon - or when you want a particularly moody shot with light coming from only a few sources. This shot, for instance, used Strengthened Effects:

The various Bright filters, meanwhile, can provide a much cheerier perspective, perfect for outdoor/nature shots - particularly Bright 1 and Bright 4. This shot was using Bright 4:

For this particular shot, there’s not a lot of vibrant spell effects to emphasise, but it’s also not a bright natural scene. Bright 1 would work well enough, or one of the Pastels could soften it. But this time, let’s emphasise the lighting of the area, and make the entire thing sharper and harsher to go with Max’s stern expression.

Colored Marker 1. Nice.

But now it’s really dark. So, we need to add light sources. Considering her right side (our left) is already facing more light and is dominant in the frame, let’s put brighter lighting on that side, to make sure we can actually see her. Play around with the angle and strength of the lighting here. Type 3 lighting is generally reliable for lighting up the whole of a scene, but depending on the angle and distance you place it, you might want to drop the intensity of the Red, Green and Blue down a little.

That might be quite nice. Let’s have a look how it looks.

Oh, much better! We can actually see her now, she’s not just a shadowy blur. But we’re not done yet. Her left side (our right) is currently in darkness. But with the blue allagan nonsense around her, it might be good to emphasise that a little.

Absolutely not. Drop the intensity down, and try Type 1. Type 1 lighting tends to get overpowered by Type 3, softly reaching the shadowed parts and not spreading any further.

That’s much subtler. Checking the front again....

And that’s much better!

We’re almost done, I promise. Camera angles are the next detail. Zooming in or out is simple enough, but small, subtle shifts on the skew of the camera can really add to the dynamism of the shot, in my experience. The most action there is the in the shot, the more of a skew you can get away with. Don’t tilt it 45 degrees when someone’s standing around doing nothing, but don’t be afraid to mess with perspective if someone’s doing a Dark Knight attack with full visual effects on. For this, with it being a relatively tame shot, we’ll pull the camera in a little, and skew it just slightly to the left. (As a general rule, skew the camera towards the action. Max is on the left hand side of her bow, and her fingers are to the left of her, so we tilt the focus towards, rather than away from, those two elements).

As a side note here, if you want a full body shot, you can tilt the camera 90 degrees, to 150 or 50 (or a few degrees off from each), and then rotate the resulting picture.

We’re not going to do that for this particular photo, but it’s a good thing to keep in mind.

There’s just one last thing. The latest patch, 4.5, added Depth of Field sliders to gpose. Now, you can choose to focus on specific elements of a shot, while blurring out those that are closer or further away. Done carefully, this can emphasise the character or element of focus. Done carefully.

So. Tweak that to whatever sort of value you’re happy with, and then be sure to turn off your HUD elements before you press that screenshot button!

ISS - Expedition 56 Mission patch. August 28, 2018 September is scheduled to be a busy month for the Expedition 56 crew aboard the International Space Station. Japan is preparing to launch its seventh resupply mission and three astronauts are gearing up for two spacewalks next month. Today, a pair of astronauts familiarized themselves with the robotics maneuvers they will use when they capture Japan’s H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV-7) on Sept. 14. The HTV-7, also called the Kounotori, will launch Sept. 10 from the Tanegashima Space Center loaded with crew supplies, new science hardware and critical spacewalk gear.

5 Creative Manipulation Images

This image was created in response to the grand scale of deforestation happening in the world. The imagery of the rotting lungs relates to how trees are the lungs of the planet, and they're gradually becoming weaker. The key successes of the image are the way that the trees have been shaped and blended into the image. They are instantly recognised. They have managed to incorporate the patch of deforestation, blending that into the preserved grass to again, keep that same shape. A difficult success of this image is the use of perspective, an angle can be very tricky to get right when it comes to manipulation, but they achieve it flawlessly.

The image is poor quality as I had to screen shot off of the illusion brief YouTube video. I believe this was a student image but I think it’s really successful due to the humour that it brings. It’s very simple, only a label placed onto a bottle yet the comical element to it makes it much more impactful. It’s generally two things that really shouldn’t go together, making it even more successful as they manage to merge. This is something I’d like to recreate.

This image, by Barbara Lorincz, is successful in the way she has planned her production. She has likely photographed the items at different distances so that they will appear the same size when merged, without the resolution being affected, which would happen in resizing the images. Showing how perspective can be very important and something I will definitely consider. Unlike the previous image, these two products do somewhat correlate, creating satisfaction for a viewer as the create the link between the two.

This image by Lorett Forth is a great example of the importance of lighting, which is exactly the reason this image is successful. The way the shadows and highlights have been blended keep the dresses dimension, but the blend of the paint into the dress staying continuous is what makes it so realistic.

This image by Erik Johansson is a prime example of how important perspective and light direction can be. The road and the piece of sheet which he had photographed are two different places, yet by shooting from the same height and distance, they can appear to meagre when blended in post production. This is something to keep In mind when it comes to shooting within my project, as one off angle could break the image.
