Fashion, a Mosaic of Culture

I’ve noticed that a lot of my posts, at least my most recent ones, here are very history and background oriented. I’ve found that I enjoy digging up the histories of types and pieces of clothing. It’s interesting to know exactly where these common things come from, why we wear them, and why/how they became so popular. At the same time, knowing and awareness comes to me as a form of respect. Researching these things, taking the time to dig, is my why of appreciating the privileges of dress I’m given today.
I’m thankful I can sit next to a cardboard cut-out of Chris Pratt (whose shirt seems to say ‘Grab Becky’ for some reason) making slightly squinty smile face in my bright coral pink sweater (because Maryland can’t decide if it’s spring yet) and blue slacks. And while I don’t feel the need to know every last little thing down to each individual thread about what I’m wearing, the little research I’ve done makes me appreciate that a lot of history went into that sweater and those trousers.
(Side note: Though I am sitting next to Mr. Pratt, I was actually at the theater to see Kong, Skull Island. Go see it, go see it, go see it! I’m sorry, Pratt, but I think we all know where my heart truly lies.)
So, we’re going to try a little exercise. I’ve selected a page from a March issue of Vogue and we’re going to do an investigation of each item of clothing.
Y’know, just for funsies!
Let’s get started.
I chose this page because it has a pretty complete list of what each model is wearing and because we have three subjects, we have a lot of variety.
So, we’ll ignore the $8,900 price tag of what’s pictured and start with Jane Moseley.

Tunic
While I can’t find the exact Chloé boutique tunic they’re referring to, a tunic is generally defined as an upper body garment that is very loose fitting and often extends to or slightly beyond the hips. They are made with or without sleeves and are sometimes belted.
I’ve found sources that place the origins of the tunic in Syria which “shared” its weaving proficiency and unique wardrobe selections (ex. The tunic) with Egypt after its conquest (wars taking place between the 2nd and 3rd centuries, BC).
Others cite many versions of the tunic appearing in parts all over the world. There were the evolutions from the Greek and Roman Chiton, the long sleeved tunic for the Celtics and Germanic peoples who had much colder weather to deal with (this was also picked up by the Romans), and then also the Kurta of the Sub Indian Continent which is still worn by women today and is known for detailed embroidery.
Tank Top
The ooshirts blog’s post aptly titled, ‘The History of the Tank Top’ reveals that the ‘tank’ in tank top came from women’s bathing suits of the 1920’s.
‘Tank’ was another name for ‘swimming pool’, so the swimwear pictured above was called ‘tank suit’. The similarities in cut is what inspired people to carry the ‘tank’ on to a top.
Up until the 1970’s, tank tops were strictly used as undershirts, providing a layer of light fabric to absorb sweat and to protect the outer clothing. Finding the origins of the tank top or the singlet (always happy to insert random British counterpart words) is actually a little difficult – particularly because every other search result is about the kind of ‘tank’ that’s made of metal and shoots a really big gun.
(By the way, I would love to see what Gucci would do with a tank in a Vogue ad.)
The closest I can get is the ‘vest’, which as a sleeveless garment is a distant cousin of the tank top. As a piece worn under a coat, the first mention is owed to Samuel Pepys, famous for his diary which gave a firsthand account of many major events under the reign of King Charles II. Pepys recorded the following in reference to a change in dress code in King Charles’ court:
“the King hath yesterday, in Council, declare his resolution of setting a fashion for clothes … It will be a vest, I know not well how; but it is to teach the nobility thrift.” [Pepys, “Diary,” Oct 8, 1666]
In other word, King Charles II was hoping the vest would temper a Court that was indulging in exaggerated, extravagant dress.
Pants
I actually already talked quite a bit about pants last week. Instead of repeating myself, I will politely ask that you go check it out if you are truly interested.

Plaid
Dictionary.com defines plaid as “any fabric woven of differently colored yarns in a crossbarred pattern” or “a pattern of this kind.”
While I could investigate the jacket, though I feel that was also touched upon in the last post when I talked about suits, I think it’d be more interesting to talk about the origins of the pattern, the past of plaid.
We’ll start by correcting the misconception. The appropriate name for this criss cross of colors is ‘tartan.’
Tartan
From ‘A Brief History of Plaid’ by the Smithsonian Mag, the word ‘plaid’ actually refers to a type of heavy traveling cloak that would have the tartan patterns. The names became confused when the pattern was picked up in Britain and the U.S. As many already know, tartan has Scottish origins with the specific colors and patterns referring to particular clans. Because dyes were regionally bound, colors of tartan became regional symbols.
For example, from the Wikipedia entry on Tartan:

The Bikini
From Time’s ‘History of the Bikini’, the two piece women’s swimsuit actually goes back to 1400 B.C. Greek and Roman art depicts women participating in sports while wearing bikini style outfits.
However, the modern bikini didn’t start to evolve until the 1940’s when fabric and material rashioning forced bathing suit manufacturers to get creative and risqué, exposing more and more of the midriff. It wasn’t until 1946 when French engineer, Louis Réard officially invented the bikini that we recognize in modern day. The smaller than small bathing suit was named after the Bikini Atoll where the U.S. Military was performing nuclear tests. The inventor was hoping his invention would be just as explosive when it came onto the beach.
Though Micheline Bernardini, a nude dancer, was the first to wear the two piece suit, the bikini was banned throughout the 1950’s, deemed inferior to the more sensible and modest one piece. However, French actor, Brigitte Bardot is credited with bringing the bikini into popularity during her career in the late 1950’s. The swimsuit took off from there like a nuclear explosion.
I could probably write full essays on how the summation of these three outfits came to be and the variety of societies and cultures that contributed to them. The main thing that strikes me however is the variety included here that still works so well together. An splash of Scottish culture, a pinch of French and English, some Roman, some Greek – and this is only a light example of how much cultural history can mix in a single outfit.
It’s one of my favorite things about fashion. Pieces and styles from all over the world are borrowed, shared, taken for inspiration, etc. and as it’s been put together in these (not to be corny) great mosaics.
With the world as inspiration, its history, its great multitudes and varieties, there really is no limit on the combinations, the art that fashion can achieve. Fashion is one of our greatest celebrations of diversity and multi-culturalism and I think that’s pretty neat.
