Yes LIFE, I'm ready, let's do great things! No wait I should be doing the laundry!!
Yesterday we spoke about anger and how our should’s and shouldn’t limit our capacity to see what is happening in the moment; we get caught up in the mind chatter and become removed from what is ACTUALLY HAPPENING.  This speaks to an even bigger issue about how our model of the world impacts EVERY ASPECT of our lives when it remains on automatic pilot, unquestioned, unaltered.
If we accept the premise that we all have beliefs, rules, assumptions and expectations that are filtering our experience.  If we accept that they brain has developed short cuts to allow us to function in the world without information overload, and that the beliefs are based on our learning experiences, then it follows that what we actually perceive is LIMITED by our model of the world.  This is obviously the intention behind the short cuts – to not to HAVE to take everything in – but if you are experience results that are not ok by you, then you might want to take a look!!
This is such a profound thing to consider that it is actually very difficult to accept on many levels – that if your reality of the world is not what you want it to be, then you could question your own beliefs, rules, assumptions, and expectations that may be contributing to these outcomes.  This comes with it a high level of responsibility – if you are aware of how you, yourself, are limiting YOU then one could see that it then becomes your responsibility to change what is happening for you.
This is not about blame – we absorb our model of the world automatically as we are hardwired to learn what we need to learn to function in the world into which we are born.  This is not done consciously; however when you do become aware of it, then it now becomes something that you GET to work on – IF you want something different for yourself.
So you could be questioning
What beliefs or ideas do I have about myself/ others/ the world that might be limiting me in my life and my capacity to go after what really matters?
What do I actually believe about myself/ others/ the world – does this even make sense in the now?
What am I expecting of myself/ others/ the world that might be getting in the way of my own happiness?
What rules (shoulds and shouldnt’s) do I follow blindly that may not have ANY relevance to the now?
What do I assume is going to happen in my life such that I don’t even contemplate change or asking for something more?
What are you settling for such that you don’t even give yourself permission to consider the things that REALLY matter to you?
What do you take for granted every day such that you find it hard to capitalise on your strengths, resources and capacities to make something meaningful of your life?
These are hard questions to consider – most people won’t even take a peak as with this awareness comes responsibility – to make a change, to want for something more - to actually stand up for yourself and your life and to go after what really matters.  That is outside the comfort zone -  and most people will not go there as it feels too risky.  Well guess what – nothing great has EVER come from a comfort zone – NOTHING!  So if you long for greatness – greatness in your life – something more for yourself – then it starts with having a peak under the hood of your machinery, so to speak.  Understanding is the first step – only then can we make meaningful change.
So is this you?  Do you want more for yourself and your life?  To experience all that you can out of this ultimately short life that we have all been given.  To take life by the hand and to say – let’s do something awesome today!?  Most people won’t – and if that’s ok – but if it is you and you do want to experience more of your true self then it starts with the questioning!!
So go do it – start asking yourself some questions – begin to excavate what is there – find the diamonds and discard the dust - it’s all there if only you will look.
And remember, Bodhi starts with you

Can you choose courage over fear?
When it comes to the things that matter MOST to you in your life, do you know how to choose courage over fear?  Do you know how to acknowledge that fear is present AND then to continue on to do what matters in your life – knowing that fear is something that is likely to never go away!  Fear may lessen in certain areas when you learn that you are OK, it’s not life threatening, but if you are to live a creative life – one where you are always learning – then it pays to learn how to build a relationship with fear such that it can come along for the ride, but it does not have to STOP YOU!
So understanding a bit about fear is helpful, as fear often responds best to information – we can tune in and see what IS happening rather than what I THINK will happen.  As you see, fear is really trying to protect you – it is perceiving danger on some level – and telling you to get out of there so that you can SURVIVE .  However, if you want to experience anything else in your life OTHER than survival mode – constantly on the run and missing out on doing the things that your heart calls you to do – then we need to learn to how discern real danger from PERCEIVED danger – and then continue to act even when there might be some element of fear.
So this is courage – to do what you feel is most important to you even in the presence of fear.  This does rely, in part, on experience – you do it and learn that you are ok, your brain says ‘oh its actually ok, false alarm!!  However there are some tricks that you can use to get around the fear – or at least to reduce it such that you can see that taking the risk in the first place is worth it – you can see that it is a calculated risk.
So some questions that may help you:
What is the fear?  What is it that you are actually afraid of – even if this seems silly and you logically know that it is not scary – what does fear tell you about this situation.  Be honest with yourself?
Now question – what would be bad about this if it were to happen?  What would be BAD about it?
What would be the worst case scenario?  Question this until you actually feel that the thought matches your level of fear – if it doesn’t match then you have not hit the hot spot – the thought that is actually driving your fear.
How likely is it that the worst case scenario will happen?  Question the odds or the percentage of likelihood that it would or could happen.
Now in the event that the worst case scenario did happen – how BAD would it be REALLY?  On a scale of 1-10 in the order of bad things in your life – how bad would it be really?
And lastly – how would you COPE???  What would you DO if the worst case scenario actually did come to pass?  What coping strategies do you have available to you?
If you perceive that the event is bad, likely to happen and you feel that you wouldn’t cope – then you may not be ready to do this quite yet and there is PROBLEM SOLVING to be done – you don’t have to sit with the fear forever – we just need to begin to problem solve your concerns.
However, it is possible that the above questioning can give you an avenue to get STARTED – it allows the fear to reduce enough so you can get started and then experience will tell you that your fear was exaggerating the ‘badness’ of the situation – you can then learn through your experience that you are actually OK and you can do it!!
It important to remember that when faced with UNCERTAINTY – the situation could be positive, negative or neutral – we are hardwired to ASSUME THE WORST!!  This is of course a safety mechanism – Is this a bear?  Yes or no? Oh lets look on the bright side!!  Well no, of course you are not going to do that – of course you will assume it is the bear until it is proven otherwise and you know that you are SAFE!   This makes sense – but it is no way to live your life.
Just surviving the things that come up in your life is actually NOT A LIFE – it is just avoidance of being hurt and this robs you of all the JOY that you experience when you have taken a risk and prevailed – you have faced the fear and learned that you are OK and in fact better than ever as you are doing what matters to you - and this my friend is LIVING!
So implement this strategy in an area in which you feel fear – in an area that you have been avoiding as it has been too scary to look at – and see what comes out for you. This is your life after all!!
And remember, Bodhi starts with you!
