VOY: Caretaker (Part 2)
The Star Trek universe is a long road, so to keep things moving along home, Iâve decided to no longer split up 2-part episodes and films. This is the first of three posts that will wrap up Caretaker, Emissary, and ST: The Motion Picture.Â
Part two of Voyagerâs pilot episode brings new excitement, new troubles, and new characters.
Are all Talaxians this⊠eccentric?
When we first meet Neelix, heâs scraping out a living as a junk trader, clad in a fur coat that appears to be made up of several different alien mammals, over a confusingly-patchwork shirt (or harness? Or space lederhosen??) with metallic gold accents. Itâs an appropriately mottled look for his line of work, although it definitely looks like it smells weird.
Is that me or you, Mr. Vulcan?
However, we donât get to spend much time with this outfit, as Janeway invites the Talaxian aboard, and Neelix is quick to take advantage of Voyagerâs facilities â including the replicator. After asking Tuvok if it will make him a Starfleet uniform (âit most certainly will notâ), we beam down to the Ocampan planet below to see that Neelix has chosen a suit made of old bus station upholstery.Â
At first, I thought this outfit was both too beige and too chaotic, but the more I look, the more I like it. It actually kind of works with his Talaxian mohawk and spots, and I love that the fabric is just as garish and patchwork-looking as his âjunk collectorâ outfit.. Also, the overwhelming impression of beige may just be due to this planetâs extremely yellow lens filter atmosphere.
The colour palette is âwaiting room neutralâ.
The structure of the outfit is interesting, too. Chunky piping across the midsection creates some nice, futuristic asymmetry, and I love that it continues down the one sleeve in rings. Neelix goes on to knock it out of the park with a matching teal shirt (you can just see the collar peeking out above) and shoes.
This is a man who knows how to coordinate.
Next, itâs time for another new species in the Delta Quadrant: the Kazon! As we get a wide shot of the group of Kazon Ogla, we can immediately see a lot of cream and ochre tones, cut off sleeves, and a single hairstyle that everybody has to share.
And no girls allowed.
Itâs actually an incredible number of unique-but-coordinated costumes. You immediately get the impression that these guys are a rowdy bunch who arenât afraid to get their asymmetrical skirts dirty proving who has the most testosterone. As well, everybody looks great in warm earth tones.
I guess itâs not hard to shop when every single member of your species is an autumn.
Somebody needs to tell them all the belts and gloves are a bit much though.
We just like to feel secure, okay?
Kes also makes her debut in this scene, but sheâs basically wearing a dirty potato sack, so weâll skip ahead. Like her lover Neelix, sheâs quick to accept the Voyager crewâs hospitality, and replicates a new set of duds the moment sheâs on board. Interestingly, she opts for a very Kazon colour palette.
Now whoâs asymmetrical??
Itâs a killer look â layered, colourful, a little bit alien, but also cute. The one-shoulder bodycon tunic is sexy, but the neckline and legs are very modestly covered. Kes is basically Twiggy as a telepathic space elf. As a child watching Star Trek in the 90s, I remember noticing Jennifer Lienâs costumes as Kes more than anything else in the show, and I still aspire to this aesthetic.
I only noticed how gay I was later.
Thereâs also a lot of variation in textures here, between the crinkled summer cotton and contrasting velveteen, which weâll soon see is the style of the Ocampa. What? Oh right! Our people are still missing! Back down to the planet we go.Â
The underground Ocampa lean toward earth tones â although, would they call them that? â befitting their simple, horticultural lifestyle. Like Kes, their outfits are layered and multi-textured.
The Caretaker provides everything we need. Linen, tweed, corduroyâŠ
Unless youâre a bad guy, in which case you wear grey, unflattering robes and a scarf (poorly).
The Ocampan equivalent of sweats and a gym tee.
We also get a really good look at Chakotayâs Maquis outfit in this scene, which will sadly soon be replaced by a Starfleet uniform for good. Itâs a shame, as it looks like someone spent a lot of time working on that leather vest, with its hand-stitched details and tailored fit.
Do you think he brought the holster from home?
Speaking of Maquis drip, BâElanna has some INSANE boots that we only get to see for a split second as she swings her legs off a bio-bed in sick bay. The whole outfit is absolutely deadly, but I would do anything to see these boots show up in more episodes.
Surely we can make a uniform exception?
With all the loose ends neatly wrapped up, itâs time for the Voyager crew (and new additions) to start the long trek home. But before we can warp away, Neelix and Kes run to tell Janeway something very important â that theyâve replicated more new clothes.
The bridge is basically a common area, right?
Kes sports an olive green tunic with slashed shoulders that allow the poofy sleeves of a shirt underneath to poke through, over jade green leggings and matching heels. Itâs another cute look, and even more elfin than before, but I think the red-and-orange outfit was more flattering. Neelix has another matching pants and jacket set made out of the ugliest fabric possible, though with an interesting front closure swooping off to one side. Beneath the jacket is a very handsome red shirt, with a sort of kimono-like layered appearance.
Slow your pace a bit, guys, weâve got 70,000 lightyears to go.
â
The Costume Designer for this episode was Robert Blackman. Wardrobe Supervisor: Carol Kunz Key Costumers: Tom Siegel, Camille Argus, Matt Hoffman, Jamie Thomas

Favorite Media of 2020!
There was a large swathe of this year during which I was unable to concentrate on reading (as there probably was for a lot of other typically-frequent readers), so, as a result, I ended up listening to way more podcasts and watching way more TV shows. Not a bad thing, but boy did I read way less books than usual.Â
However, for the first time in a while, the amount of fiction I read was about equal with the amount of nonfiction I read. Last yearâs reading resolution was to read more fiction, so...success??
I did read a lot of phenomenal fiction when I had the energy to do so this year.
Books - Fiction
The Martian - Andy Weir
This book is the hardest of the hard sci fi I think Iâve ever read. Every single aspect of it is minutely researched and calculated. The author literally wrote equations to write this book. The science is insanely impressive and yet...it never loses its sense of humor or humanity in the mix. In fact, theyâre the thing that drives the entire story.
Warlock Holmes - G. S. Denning
Way early in the year I was strolling down the fantasy aisle at the library, when this cover caught my eye. I took one look at it, went âoh, this looks sillyâ and...proceeded to devour the entire series in a matter of weeks.Â
It is very silly. Especially when itâs pointing out something that was silly in the original. Thereâs something so satisfying about Watson immediately answering Holmes with the correct number of steps in their flat when heâs trying to make his point about how most people donât pay attention to things like that.
World War Z - Max Brooks
Every single scenario in here could easily support an entire book. A park ranger whose job it is to contain the yearly zombie spring thaw? HECK YES. Iâd read tens of thousands of words about that. A Chinese admiral who defaults, steals the governmentâs premier submarine, loads it up with the families of his underlings and takes to the sea for years to live in the maritime economy that has sprung up in a world where everyone is trying to escape the shore? That could be an entire movie on its own.Â
Every chapter was more creative than the last and as a huge worldbuilding fan, this book was so, so fun.
An Unkindness of Ghosts - Rivers Solomon
In which a queer, neurodivergent protagonist solves a mystery on a spaceship which is a microcosm of antebellum era politics! This had a beautiful, mysterious, wonder-inducing writing style and it was a joy to peer into the wildly differing minds of every single character.
Books - Nonfiction
Underland - Robert MacFarlane
In every chapter, the author visits a different hole. Basically.
Itâs an exploration of caves, catacombs, mines, nuclear waste facilities and the hidden underbelly of every forest. It was fascinating. And fundamentally changed how I look at time.
Rejected Princesses - Jason Porath
After years of having enjoyed the web entries, I finally got my hands on the first book and was not disappointed.Â
There are the more entertaining entries, of course and the art is as charming as always, but what struck me the most were the more difficult stories. The deeper you go into this book, the more horrific it gets. The author does not hold back on the indignities suffered by the historical figures he writes about. Itâs terrible...but also very, very illuminating.
The Gift of Fear - Gavin De Becker
This book - while maintaining all the essential information in it - could be pared down to one sentence in a sea of blank pages and that sentence would be: trust your instincts. End of story.
But in a world where instincts are either customarily suppressed or going haywire, itâs not quite that easy, which is why Iâm glad there is more to the book.
I picked it up thinking âha ha, betcha canât help a person with anxiety who fears all the time alreadyâ and...what it actually ended up doing was giving me the tools to differentiate between real fear and unfounded fear. And did help with the anxiety quite a bit.
Fanfiction
Watch Over Me - cakeisatruth
A Bioshock fic from the point of view of a little sister who is learning how to trust and be an ordinary child again. Dark and sweet. An excellent combo.
All That is Visible - Ultima_Thule
An exploration of a minor character in a well researched historical context? Thatâs my jam! How did they know?? A Tron fic about what itâs like to be a female programmer in the 70s.
Graphic Novels
The Adventure Zone -Â McElroys + Carey Pietsch
Yesssssssss! It was a running-to-the-library type event whenever my library got a new volume in. The jokes are so good, the art is so lively and the ways in which they added the details that the podcast couldnât necessarily get across is *mwah*
Trail of Blood - Shuuzou Oshimi
Hoooooooly shit, the art style of this one!! Itâs beautifully detailed and expressive, sure, but the real draw for me was how it changes with the emotional state of the main character. Thereâs this sequence in which heâs consumed with anxiety at school and all of his classmates become blurry and unfocused, until they canât be recognized as humans at all, that particularly sticks with me.
Itâs a horror story about a kid who witnesses his loving mother push his cousin off a cliff for seemingly no reason and is then obligated by her to keep the secret, which is eating him from the inside out. Itâs so good, guys, please read it.
Level Up - Gene Lien Yang/Thien Pham
A story about a kid who is haunted by his late fatherâs desire for him to become a gastroenterologist. Itâs funny and touching and the ending gave me what I can only describe as a feeling of exhilaration. Yâknow that feeling when something unexpected but not out of left field, perfectly in tune with the narrative arc and gut bustingly funny happens, all in the same panel? That one.
Film
Searching
This is a fairly standard thriller about a dad trying to find out what happened to his missing daughter. Itâs also found footage...but not in the usual way, which was what made it so compelling to me. Itâs told through the dadâs phone calls, google searches, social media interactions, news footage, security cameras and webcams. It was such a cool way to tell a story.
Train to Busan
Thereâs a lot thatâs already been said about this movie and I donât think thereâs much more I can meaningfully add to that. Suffice to say that ya gotta take care of each other if youâre going to survive a zombie apocalypse!!
TV Series
My Brotherâs Husband
As close to a perfect adaptation as a person can get (barring the entire conversation in English which was...oof). I was so happy when they took it a step further and showed Kana and Yaichi actually getting to meet Mikeâs family.
Zumboâs Just Desserts
I watched a lot of baking shows this year. Like...a lot. They were my much-needed comfort viewing for the year and this one was my favorite, even over The Great British Baking Show (which I LOVE). Why? Because the pastry chef for whom itâs named makes such bizarre and wonderful desserts and fosters an environment in which the competitors do the same. Iâve never seen anything like a lot of the desserts that make an appearance on this show. Every single episode was an awesome surprise and so help me, this show had better get a third season.
She-ra and the Princesses of Power
Thereâs also a lot thatâs been said about this one, so I wonât say much more. Suffice to say: DAMN. Thatâs how you do an 80s toy tie-in cartoon remake.
Infinity Train
This showâs premise is probably the most unique Iâve seen in recent years. Its balance of comedy, horror and existential dread is also *mwah* I also love how much it trusts the viewer to figure things out on their own.
Primal
A late entry sliding in before the year ends! I finally got to watch the second half of the first season last weekend and it was EXCELLENT. The pacing, the brutal fight scenes, the adorable dinosaur antics, the animation, the quiet moments - *mwah-mwah-mwah-mwah-mwah*
The most emotional moment for me was the part in which the protagonists watch, with sorrow, as the rabid dinosaur whoâs been trying to kill them all night dies an excruciating death.
Also it sets up a fascinating new plotline right before ending in a cliffhanger!! Another one for the âhad better get a next seasonâ list.
Games
Night in the Woods
This is one thatâs been on my to play list for a few years and I was so glad I finally got my hands on it. Itâs like...The Millennial Experience (TM), the game. I felt so seen, playing it. The character writing was fantastic.
Prey
I donât know why I put off finishing this for so long. I guess I wasnât in the right alien killing headspace for a while?? Anyway, the setting is gorgeous, the alien biology is weird and cool, the ethics are delightfully murky and the interconnectedness of the station was really cool, especially in the OH SHIT moments at the end.Â
Podcasts
The Adventure Zone
I tried to narrow this down to one favorite arc, but found that I couldnât do it. I love Balance for its comedy and creative energy. I love Amnesty for its drama and acting. I am loving Graduation for the depth of its world and the way in which the real story behind everything thatâs happened is slowly unfurling. Itâs a good podcast all around. Â
The Magnus Archives
Who obsessively listened to every single season while playing Minecraft in about a month? Surely not me, nooooo. Of course not.
Thereâs also been a lot said on this one, so Iâll keep it brief. Iâve seen things in here that I havenât really seen elsewhere in horror. My particular favorites were the creepy psychiatric hospital in which the horror comes not from the patients, but from the denial of the doctor to believe them about their mental illnesses and every single thing related to the Anthropocene. The one with the Amazonian village made out of trash - CHILLS.

Richard Morrison Realtor Reviews
Richard Morrison realtor in Vancouver is a family owned business. He was formerly an accountant with Deloitte, and it is where he learned the art of selling and buying properties.
The investment industry, he explains, is the only industry that will be around for some time, he says, and while most people today understand its importance and value, there is still a need to learn more about this field. And since Vancouver has become the second largest metropolitan area in Canada, the demand for buying and selling real estate is not shrinking as fast as other cities. In fact, it is expanding.
As a Vancouver based realtor, Richard Morrison is in a unique position to make a living doing what he loves. But as he and his family take in two new additions to their four-bedroom home, and two well-kept horses for sale, his focus is less on helping people buy and sell real estate. He's thinking about it more like a business. He will have to decide how much time to devote to that part of his life.
It has been over four decades since Vancouver's and BCâs economy began to boom. Since then, more people have flocked to the city, attracted by its tax rebate on income, its second largest social program (after health care), and its excellent schools. People want to live here, work here, and raise their families here.
That's not to say the financial state of the Vancouver economy hasn't had any effect on Richard Morrison Realtor's career as a consultant. Vancouver was one of the first Canadian cities to use municipal bonds as collateral for loans. Since it does not use the full faith and credit system as it does in most states, it has to trust the banks that borrow from there. They have seen many a bank collapse over the years, and today, with all of the uncertainty in the country, they are even more cautious.
"Most banks are reluctant to make loans to any business," Morrison says. This type of lending may be temporary, he explains, but the interest rates have fallen drastically. With this more relaxed lending criteria, more local buyers and sellers are finding their way into the Metro Vancouver real estate market.
A Vancouver realtor, like any other person or business, needs to know where to go to sell his or her property. "People find it difficult to come here and buy because they don't know where to go and who to talk to." Vancouver's property listings on the MLS (multi-level list) are huge. There are now almost as many listings in Vancouver as there are listings in Los Angeles.
One of the biggest advantages to buying and selling properties in Vancouver is that there are so many different kinds of people who call the city home. There are new immigrants, retirees, single parents, stay at home moms, realtors, lawyers, doctors, accountants, nurses, executives, tech professionals, artists, musicians, college students, people who are single and are looking for work, and plenty of others.
Many of these different hobbies and careers come into play in the home. For example, a single mom might have an executive office with a work desk and a computer for her professional work. She has her children in the play room with computer game systems and television sets, and in the bedroom, she has her "office," a coffee table, side tables, computer accessories, and her "work space" of clothes, jewelry, and shoes.
Many of the world's elite live in the luxury style housing that is available in Vancouver. There are homes on award winning streets, beautiful master suites, sprawling gardens, and access to the local beaches and parks. And the price of these homes is affordable, with prices starting as low as $800,000.
There are people who can't help themselves, as they move into this "new town," and they bring with them their different cultures, tastes, ethnicities, and lifestyles. and most of the people are happy to mix with all of them.
As a Vancouver realtor, Richard Morrison believes his job is to give buyers, sellers, and renters in Vancouver, and Canadians across the country, as well as the rest of the world, access to the different homes, properties, and services that are available for sale. - and he hopes to do this for a long time to come.
Questions to Ask a Realtor Before Committing to Their Services
A Vancouver realtor's job is to find you the best properties for your specific needs. One of the things you will want to be sure to ask about before you commit to a buyer is if the home is fully furnished. If you do not like the look of the home, you do not have to be in a hurry to move in, but you want to be sure you have a place that you can call your own. This is why Richard Morrison Realtor has placed a few guiding queries below to answer your questions.
Once you do find a home that you feel is right for you, having a good Vancouver realtor will ensure that you get the best price from the seller. In addition, a good Vancouver realtor will guide you through the entire process of buying and selling. They are great at helping you avoid common mistakes, as well as ensuring that you are on the right track in making your purchase.
There are many places to look for a good Vancouver realtor. The most obvious one is the phone book. When you do go to their office, make sure that they have an online presence as well. This will help you find them quickly should you have questions or concerns about how to find them.
Another source of information for finding a good Vancouver realtor can be the local MLS listings. When you use these, the agent will have access to more options. Since this is their area of expertise, they will have all of the listings that they can find.
The Internet is also a great way to find a great realtor. With the advent of social media, you will be able to see the realtor's previous clients. You can then go online and check out other listings in your area to see if you feel comfortable dealing with them.
A third resource to use when looking for a good realtor is the Better Business Bureau. Here you will be able to look up complaints against them. This will give you a great idea of how the realtor you are interested in handling your purchase has been. Not only will you want to be sure that you are dealing with a reputable company, but you want to be sure that you are dealing with a company that is going to work hard to make your purchase go smoothly.
So, now that you know where to look, what questions should you ask? First of all, you want to make sure that the home is listed with MLS. This is where you will get access to the different properties that are listed for sale. You will want to see if the property is currently for sale, or if it is just vacant. This will help you determine the asking price.
Secondly, you want to ask about the selling process. How long does it take to sell the property? Will the seller come out to view the home? These are all great questions to ask.
Third, you want to check to see if there are any liens on the property. This is something that should never be overlooked. If there are, they can be something that you need to work out with the seller. For example, a mortgage or a tax lien could prevent the seller from being able to come out to inspect the property.
Finally, you want to ask about pricing. What price are they asking for the property? Are they in need of a down payment? In addition, you want to ask if the listing agent has any special deals, and whether or not they will be taking on any financing.
All of these questions are important part of the process of buying and selling. All of them will give you a sense of whether or not the seller is as serious as they say they are. Be sure to pay attention to the answers you get and make sure that you are working with a person who really wants to find you the right property for your needs.

Check Out the Market For Metro Vancouver BC Real Estate
Richard Morrisonâs Vancouver realtor who is well known in the industry. He is a member of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver and was recently featured on the local news with a story about an extremely high value of one of his homes. Morrison is also the Vancouver Branch President of the National Association of Realtors and was recently nominated for the "Vacant Store Of The Year" award.
Morrison works with different properties from private buyers to those looking to invest. He has also worked with commercial properties. He believes that there is a great market for buying homes and businesses both. Here are some tips that Morrison offers to those who may be interested in investing in Vancouver real estate.
First, one of the reasons that the market is so good for investors is that there is a lack of inventory in Vancouver real estate. Most investors want to purchase their first property and have access to the types of properties that they are looking for at very low prices. This is great for those that are buying or selling, but may not be ideal for private developers.
Another reason why the market is so strong is because of the desire for families. The rates in this market are much lower than other areas of the United States. There are many properties for sale for below market value, which appeal to people looking to build equity for their children.
Another reason why the market is so good for families is that there are more properties available for the young couples to buy. Also, there are now more options for those looking to buy a condo than there were when this market started. For people looking to rent out their Vancouver condos, this is another reason that the market is so attractive.
Morrison also says that this is a good time to buy real estate because the economy is slowing down. Though, most realtors agree that it is still a good time to buy or sell real estate because the economy has not hit rock bottom yet. This means that there are plenty of properties available for people to purchase.
One of the best benefits to buying a property in Vancouver is that the properties will increase in value. It is almost like having your own piece of property right in the heart of the city, that you may spend a lot of time in. The trend seems to be upward and so buyers are able to get a better return on their investment.
One of the reasons that the market is so strong is because there is a lack of inventory in Vancouver real estate. Most people that are looking to buy properties are hoping to get a bargain. This is especially true for those that are looking to sell their property in the downtown core area.
Another reason that the market is so strong is because there are more properties available for the buyers to buy. There are condos available in the area that people are not able to purchase in the past. This gives those who are purchasing to buy properties a great option to choose from.
Morrison says that there is a great demand for homes in Vancouver as the market is still very competitive. There are many buyers who are in the market for a new home and they are not going to wait until the last minute for it. This is great for those that are looking to buy a home.
If you are looking to buy a home or sell a property in Vancouver real estate, this is an excellent time to do so. There are a lot of properties for sale. There are also many opportunities for investors to make money if they are willing to work hard and put forth the effort to get their business off the ground.
For a new home to be built, the federal government does offer tax incentives to encourage people to build new homes. There are other incentives that can be obtained from the city of Vancouver to improve a property that is not up to code. standard, so it is in the buyer's best interest to look around to see what options are available.
Luxury Homes in Vancouver, BC
Vancouver luxury homes are excellent examples of world-class architecture. They have the look and feel of a home in Europe, as well as the distinctive charm of the great cities of Europe. They are called Vancouver condos because they are residential properties, like apartments or houses, which are available to people living in the surrounding area, without the need for them to be tied down to one location. Condos are a great way to invest in the future of your home, whether you want to rent it out, live in it for years, or even build your own little village on the property.
Homeowners in Vancouver enjoy living in a beautiful city that has been described as "The Beverly Hills of Canada". It is also the dream setting for many young couples who are drawn to the beautiful sandy beaches, world-class entertainment venues, and peaceful ambiance of the city.
For these reasons, Vancouver homes and condos are the perfect investment for those looking to move to Vancouver, BC. In addition to the fantastic value in the market, there are also a number of facilities and amenities in the area, including international hotels and shopping centres.

Sunday, they went to Emma and Antonioâs house. The place was pretty and it had a little but beautiful garden. Henri was there too. All they spent a nice morning talking cheerfully, well, everybody but Lars, Mei thought that it was typical of him. Also, she could notice that it looked like he disliked Antonio, because he talked to him in a very cutting way. But she didnât say anything; Lars was living the same situation with her brothers. And that felt like another irony of life.
âWould you like to go shopping with me one day?â Emma asked her before they left.
âSureâ Mei said.
Lars was happy that they were good friends, and he wished that Mei was kind with him too.
Since that party, his friends didnât stop talking about her; they thought she was funny and smart, and completely different from his ex-girlfriends. Besides, she was such a talented writer; they started reading every single of her articles. As if he didnât know it. He had already read them. Yes, she was talented, and smart and funny; he knew it. And it was the worst because he wanted to forget that kiss.
Lars had never felt as insecure as he started feeling. He compared himself with the other men he knew. Well, he wasnât funny as Mathias, or kind as Matthew, or charismatic as Henri, or even cheerful as Antonio. He was just a serious bitter man, whose only attractive was his money; he knew some of his ex-girlfriends were interested just on that.
Never in his life had he felt that pathetic. He wasnât good at relationships. He liked his past girlfriends enough to want to see them every day, he gave them presents, they went to expensive places and social events, they talk about⊠well, not very important matters, and suddenly, everything changed and they broke up, sometimes because they were tired of his aloofness, or because they realized it wasnât love. But what was love in the first place? He didnât believe in that, it seemed a fantasy for teenagers.
Honestly, he felt attracted to those women because they were beautiful and confident; they were the ones who asked him out. And kiss them wasnât bad, but he actually never knew he could feel something like what he felt when he kissed Mei. Lars didnât want to underestimate them, but somehow, he thought Mei was different: she wasnât impressed for what he had, she was honest, too honest in his opinion, and even though her family had money, she had a job.
How to impress a woman like that? His tricks didnât work on her, these were the exactly things Mei refused to accept. He wanted to kiss her again, and hug her, know everything about her, talk about stupid and serious matters and make her laugh. All kind of things he wouldnât do in a normal situation. He observed the ring he had already bought. She would be his wife, but not because she loved him.
âMr Janssen, Miss Wang is hereâ his secretary said happily.
âThank youâ
Mei went into his office; it was a very nice surprise for him. But she looked concerned.
âWhatâs wrong?â he asked worried.
âWe need to talk⊠about⊠hmm⊠the proposalâ she said quietly.
âRight now? Donât you prefer another place? Iâll go home in a minuteâ
âYes, if you want, I donât care, we just need to talk about thisâ
She waited for him and then, they went to his apartment, the only safe place they actually had.
âNow, tell meâ
âWell, I think you should propose soon and in private. I donât want to do this in public, you know?â
âI have no problem with that. But I havenât bought the ringâ he lied. âWhat if I give it to you tomorrow or itâs so soon?â
âNo, tomorrow is fine. Thank youâ
The next day, they met again. She thought it was a very beautiful ring, he was happy to know it. And they announced their engagement. Their parents were surprised and they were ready to become related. But this time, they couldnât decide the next step. Mei and Lars did it in their own way, avoiding that ridiculous spectacle.
Her friends were excited when she told them the news. Some days before meet him, they didnât stop talking about him, she was tired of hear about that handsome lawyer who was such a prince. She wanted to tell them that actually he was more like the dragon in this story. And at the same time, when she was alone, she caressed her lips remembering that kiss.
Feliks and Monique gasped when they saw the ring, then someone asked:
âAre you pregnant?â
âOf course no!â
âItâs a joke, dear. You have been together for like⊠six months? You two are really in love!â Feliks said laughing.
âBut, we respect your decision, and like we told you, he seems very responsible and matureâ Lien added.
âSeriously, we are happy for youâ Monique said hugging her.
Larsâ friends were happy too. Mathias gave some money to Matthew who smiled triumphant.
âSorry, but I thought youâll be the last to get marriedâ Mathias said
Lars just looked at them, and shook his head. To be honest, he wasnât mad, it was funny to be friends with those two, and also he thought he wouldnât be the first of them in getting married.
Anyways their parents organized a party to celebrate the future husband and wife. He asked her to arrive together. When he saw her at the other side of the street, he had a strange feeling and his heart beat fast. Then, he saw her talking with a guy. That man hugged her and she looked so happy to see him. Lars was disgusted, he approached and put his arm on her shoulders, she looked at him surprised.
âLars, I was about to go to your officeâ she said.
âI finished work earlierâ
âItâs great. Well, Mark, this is my boyfriend Lars. And Lars, this is Markâ she said with a fake smile.
âNice to meet you, but in fact, I am her fiancĂ©â he told him.
âNice to meet you too. And congratulationsâ
Then a young woman approached and said hi. She talked with them for a while. Mark took the womanâs hand.
âIâm glad to see you again; we have to go. Our little Thomas is waiting for us. Byeâ.
When they left, Mei moved away from Lars. She didnât talk to him until they arrived to her parentsâ house. She ignored him, almost all evening. He took her by the arm, but before she could complain about his rude attitude. He just said:
âWho was he?â
âA friendâ
âHe seemed⊠niceâ
âYes, he is. Not like certain personâ she said bitterly.
Then some people, especially their friends, asked them to kiss. They looked at each other; this will be their first kiss in public. He looked at her in the lips; he didnât think twice and kissed her as if he was afraid of losing her, he needed her. Mei didnât know what to think. When they separated, he couldnât look to her in the eyes.
âI am sorryâ he murmured and left. Â
He felt so stupid, acting just because of his jealousy. He looked for cigarettes, but he remembered he was trying to stop smoking. He was embarrassed and angry with himself. He wanted to kiss her but not in that way. Not if she didnât want. After several minutes, she found him.
âIâve been looking for you everywhereâ she said concerned.
She took his hand, and both walked in silence. Then she stopped and said:
âLars? Are you alright?â
âYes, I amâ
But no, he was so confused, the only thing he wanted to do was to escape with her, being just the two of them, and find out why that woman made him feel that way. He couldnât, and he felt sad.
What he didnât know was that Mark and Mei were friends since college; they just went on a date once, and they realized they like each other just as friends. In fact, he had always been in love with Tiffany, and she loved him back, and now, they were happily married and had a child. Mei was really glad for them.
Mei wanted to tell him that, but she thought she didnât have to explain anything. Lars wasnât her boyfriend, and even if he was. She didnât know he was so possessive; she wasnât one of his properties. He had to understand it. And that kiss⊠it felt real.
After that, Lars decided to apologize, but he didnât know how. She wouldnât accept a present. So, he asked her friends for help with the excuse that he wanted to make her a surprise for their engagement. They thought that was very lovely. He had to listen from very spicy ideas (they told him they were just joking) to something cheesy he would never do.
Lien told him that Mei wanted to go to a baseball game because it was her favorite sport; the other told him that itâd be the least romantic present. And that was perfect. Then, he told Mei that a friend gave him the tickets because if he told her that he bought them, she would refuse.
He went to her house to pick her up, and when she opened the door, he didnât know what to say, she looked adorable; her hair was styled in two braids, and she was wearing a simple t-shirt, jeans, tennis shoes and the jacket of her favorite team. She used to wear floral dresses, very girly clothes, all kind of shoes, and flowers on her hair. This new look was different, but to him, no one looked more beautiful than her.
Lars didnât understand baseballâs rules, Mei explained him. She was very excited because her favorite team was winning. Then, he felt strange again, she was happy, and he couldnât stop looking at her. After that, they took a walk in the park; she commented every detail of the game. She told him that when she was in middle school, she was in a baseball team. Now, she just watched the games. He was happy because she was telling him about her life.
âBy the way, I read the article you wrote, I liked itâ he said shyly.
âReally?â
âYes, it was very interestingâ
âIf you say so. I like fashion, you know, but sometimes I feel like no one takes my job seriously. They think I just write about clothesâ
âI am not lying. Itâs really good. Just trust in yourselfâ
She looked at him, and then, none of them talked. They walked in silence. Until, they arrived to her home.
âThank you. I had fun todayâ she said.
âMe tooâ
And for the first time, she smiled at him. He gave her an awkward kiss on the cheek and said goodbye.
Days later, Mei and Emma went shopping as they had planned. Both had always wanted to have a sister, they loved her brothers but having a sister seemed fun. They went to eat something, suddenly, Emma asked her:
âI donât want to be meddlesome, but everything is going well between you and my brother?â
âHe is very quiet but we get along wellâ she said trying to sound convinced.
âI know this situation isnât easy, everything is going so fast, but please, you can trust me. Iâm your friend, and I care because he is my brotherâ
âThank you. Iâll take care of him. Donât worryâ
âI know you will. Lars could seem grumpy but actually he is very kind. He taught me and Henri to ride a bikeâ
Mei thought that was very sweet. It wasnât that she really hated him, but they were complete different and with all the things had happened and the marriage, she was confused. Then, she thought about the kisses and she blushed. She couldnât talk about that with her. She kept it as a secret.
She asked her to make the wedding cake. Emma accepted happily.
It looked like their parents had organized everything. Now, she just had to buy her wedding dress, she wanted something simple. She tried on different dresses while her mother, her future mother-in-law and her friends told her she looked beautiful.
She was afraid. She will get married in a couple of weeks, everything went so fast. She looked at her hand, that ring made her feel so much responsibility and think about him. She wanted to hate him, but she couldnât.
Meanwhile, he was waiting, counting the days. He would be her husband and they would live together.

Gabe Kapler is Cool With Philliesâ Showmanship, Thinks itâs Good for the Game of Baseball
Gabe Kapler, who manages the undefeated, 1st-place Philadelphia Phillies, joined 94 WIP this morning for his weekly phone call with Angelo Cataldi.
Kapler talked about a special night for Bryce Harper, explaining that he felt like returning to Washington was a tough and emotional moment for the Philsâ right fielder.
He also admitted that he was a bit surprised at the the reception Harper was given by Nationals fans:
It did (surprise me). It really did Angelo. Itâs not that I wouldnât expect the Nationals fans to be a little bit irked that Bryce chose the Phillies. But at the same time, I think the first thing that I would do as a fan is recognize the contributions of a player that gave everything he had for seven years and four playoff appearances. Look, I remember when I was with the Red Sox, and Johnny Damon went to the Yankees. He signed with the Yankees after the â04 World Series, and then he came back to Boston. The first thing that happened was that he got a standing ovation, and then the boos came, of course the boos came after that. But before the boos came, you saw this acknowledgment and a tip of the cap in appreciation. So yeah, it was a little surprising.
Kapler, however, is not surprised that Harper has immediately connected with his teammates and the Philliesâ fan base, explaining that it was a âfocusâ and a priority for him after signing his 13-year, big money deal.
The manager is also 100% on board with the Philliesâ celebrations and handshakes, as explained after the jump:
Kapler: âŠDavid Ortiz had a handshake for every player he played with in 2004. So itâs not unheard of, itâs not a brand new thing. But it takes a lot of effort, and I think thatâs where Bryce is, heâs put in a lot of effort. One of the things I find really cool, is that he has a handshake with Dong Lien, one of our strength coaches. And the thing I love about that is how good it makes Dong feel, to have that connection with Bryce Harper, with somebody with that kind of star power, and to feel that connected to that guy in that moment. I think Bryce understands that and itâs really played well.
Cataldi: Gabe, thereâs maybe one possible negative, if the opponent keeps seeing that and thinks theyâre overdoing it. We saw a little bit of that with the balls under the chin of Rhys Hoskins. You think thatâs a response to all of whatâs going on after the big moments for Bryce?
Kapler: I think itâs so commonplace in the game now, Angelo. I think certainly, the more successful you are, the more celebrations you have, the more likely it is that other clubs come after you. But I really do think itâs commonplace around the league. Iâm curious to get your thoughts on that. Thereâs more celebration, thereâs more emotion being shown. Like I said, handshakes are not unique to the Philadelphia Phillies. Whatâs your take on it?
Cataldi: Fans love it. We know from the calls weâre getting that the fans absolutely love it. Thatâs part of the show biz element of baseball today. I think they really enjoy it.
Kapler: I think so, too. And I actually think itâs really good for the game of baseball. Itâs not to say that the Matt Williams style of hitting a home run, putting your head down, and sprinting around the bases isnât cool, and I think thereâs ways to (inaudible because my dog started barking at a squirrel)⊠but why not say, âhey both (styles) are great, both make our game unique, and both should be celebrated.â
So there you have it.
Itâs part of the game. Itâs fun. God forbid MLB fans have something to enjoy. God forbid the players have some personality.
If you donât want the Phils to shake hands and flip bats, donât let them score runs and hit dingers. Baseball retaliation is just as dumb as a hockey team losing 4-0 and deciding to just fight the other squad instead.
Seems simple enough to me.
Happy Wednesday.
