Sure blade grabs and disarms in longsword are cool and fun and badass and all but Fiore never mentioned what to do if your drill partner is a PLUMBER WITH THE GRIP STRENGTH OF THE GODS
#hema#longsword#fiore#you might take a sword from a man but you cannot detach this man from his sword#swords#lichtenauer#prolly would have said “do something else then”

I know no one ever reads blogs anymore, but I publish some stuff on ancient historical fencing every once in a while. It's all in Spanish, which might be useful as I don't see a lot of resources for this topic in my native language.

I'd like to propose a fictional situation, and I hope you'll weigh in if interested. Let's say a portal opens in modern times, and a single champion of any age, wearing appropriate garb and armor, and a period-accurate weapon, steps out. Assuming no firearms are present, what, in your professional opinion, would be among the most dangerous armor/weapon pairings to exit that portal and face our fictional protagonist(s)?
If we're looking for more specific situations like terrain, let's assume this happens three times: once in the forest with wide clearings but dense underbrush, once in a room with tight corners and obstacles, and once in a mine with good lighting and long but narrow corridors.
First off, I'm not a professional...!
(1) A forest with wide clearings and dense brush: a lightly armoured man-at-arms (mail or brigandine on body, maybe a plackart on the lower abdomen and plates on limbs or at least arms, also some sort of helmet, non-enclosed for good peripheral vision) carrying a late medieval longsword or possibly Swiss sabre, and full Talhoffer / Lichtenauer / dei Liberi training in how to use it.
(2) A room with tight corners and obstacles: either the aforesaid lightly armoured man-at-arms, carrying a short Messer and once again with full training in how to use it OR an unarmoured man with a smallsword and full training in how to use it for combat, not just fencing - so, basic training by Angelo and lethality polish by McBane.
(3) A mine with good lighting and long but narrow corridors: peripheral vision and "nimble" mobility are much less of an issue, so full plate armour with unnecessary equestrian bits left off, carrying a pollaxe (poleaxe) and with full training in its use from "Le Jeu de la Hache" (Axe-play) and possibly an arming sword and dagger at the belt for backup.
That's today's answer, tomorrow's or next week's might differ in some or all respects, and I'm going to be interested to see what others suggest. ;->
HTH!

Sekiro has (in my opinion) the best soulslike combat because it most clearly understands the concept of Initiative.
In the Lichtenauer school of longsword fencing, we use the language of Vor and Nach, or “before” and “after” to describe this. One fighter Acts, and the other must React. Any rational being, when faced with an oncoming attack, will defend herself instead of eating the hit and launching her own attack. (This is why beginner fencers are dangerous, they often lack any sense of self preservation)
In fencing, you always want to take the initiative, to strike first, but in most soulslikes, the tempo of fights usually isn’t so clear. Because you rarely have a way of taking initiative away from enemies, you usually end up sitting around waiting for the enemy to finish a combo, who then waits for you to make two or three attacks, repeated ad nauseam. I don’t find this particularly compelling.
In Sekiro, combat is understood to be a dance with tempo, and you can and should take the lead. Enemies feel self-preservation and will defend against your attacks, until they gain initiative through a clearly identifiable parry against you (in lichtenauer we would usually call these master strikes) which puts you on the back-foot, and you can in-turn do the same and use other tools to create openings.
This isn’t to say Sekiro is more “realistic” and thus better than other soulslikes, but instead that this translation of the basic structure of real fencing more faithfully into a game creates a more dynamic and satisfying framing for combat

Who Killed Frauke Liebs?
On June 20, 2006, the 21-year-old student nurse Frauke Liebs disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The last known sighting of her was at a pub in Paderborn's city center, where she and a friend watched the FIFA World Cup match between England and Sweden. While Liebs was still at the pub, she borrowed a friend's mobile phone battery, as the battery on her own phone had been drained. She later returned her friend's battery before leaving the pub at around 11 p.m. Since she probably had no more than five Euro with her, she is believed to have been heading home on foot. The pub was about 1.5 kilometers away from her home. At 12:49 a.m., her housemate received a text message from Liebs' mobile phone, saying that she would be home later. However, she did not return home that night, and when she also failed to appear at work the day after, her mother reported her missing. The police discovered that the text message had been sent from Nieheim, a small city about 35 km north-east of Paderborn. In the following days, Liebs called her housemate five times via her mobile phone. Police were able to locate the calls, which all came from different industrial areas in Paderborn. During these calls, Liebs continued to say that she would return home soon, but did not communicate any information about her situation. She provided only vague or evasive answers to questions. Liebs' last phone call was on June 27 in the presence of her sister, who also talked to her. During this conversation, she is said to have answered the question of whether she was being held captive with a faint "yes", immediately followed by a loud "no". Contact broke off after this phone call. On October 4, 2006, Liebs' skeletonized body was found by a hunter in a forested area next to a Landesstraße ("state road") near Lichtenau. The body was found with the clothes she was wearing on the day of her disappearance. Her mobile phone, handbag, wallet and wrist watch were not found. Due to the condition of the body, the time and cause of Liebs' death could not be determined. A case analysis by the police came to the conclusion that Liebs was probably held captive in the area around Nieheim and that the phone calls from Paderborn may have been diversionary manoeuvres. No motive for the crime has been determined. Over 900 people who were connected to the victim were questioned by the police, and the initial investigation produced a list of five initial suspects. All five were eventually cleared after producing alibis.

Hey! I've been playing a bunch of DOBAD lately and first of all its one of my new fav all time games its so good. But! I was wondering about the sword guard mechanic. In the final product there's just the left/right guard with relatively simple features. Was this always the vision you had for it or did the fencing mechanics go through a few different iterations? My mind is racing wondering how Lichtenaeur and Fiore and the like played into your design decisions lol. <3
Hi! Glad you are liking the game. I never intended it to be a fencing game and added guards for fun. But yeah, I fence irl and study both Fiore and Lichtenauer among many other masters. The guards in the game were inspired by British sabre, so masters like Hutton and Roworth, but also early messer fencing of Paulus Kal and Johannes Lecküchner.

Hey, a historical fencer here!
You said you had some experience with historical European arms and I was wondering if you did any HEMA and what historical sources/fighting systems you used.
Hi there!
I've only had a modicum of experience, at this point im essentially a novice, hence why im not delving super deep into usage, to answer your question more specifically yes i do HEMA! i mainly work with Fiore, Lichtenauer, codex wallerstein and Meyer!
i'm just about good enough with some weapons like backsword, sidesword and some sabre systems to look good to someone who has never studied swordsmanship, and im at most half decent with longsword, but im very much looking forward to being in a position to attend lessons again, as unfortunately i can't right now, but here's hoping that changes soon!
Apologies for the long winded answer, may you edges stay sharp and you point true!
ps
i also enjoy the dueling shield
