Speakers
Over the past few years, as Iâve gone deeper into the world of creating music with an electric guitar or bass, Iâve tried to highlight a few different things that are absolutely critical, but go overlooked. Things like the placement of pickups being more important than the pickups themselves...or how a mere .75âł of scale length can take an instrument from twangy and bright, to rich and mellow.
When I think of my own tone...obviously guitar and amp are the first considerations...but in my opinion, speakers should be above amps in that hierarchy. And, how a lot of the classic sounds weâve heard that have been attributed to amps, are really more about the character of the speakers.
***
youtube
youtube
Above are two of the most pure, perfect, crystallized examples of the idea Marshall guitar tone. Marshalls are giant, insanely loud, incredibly powerful amps that have come to define just about all rock music with an edge. The overdriven qualities of the Fender Bassman circuit combined with Russian or Czech tubes is THE quintessential rock tone of all time.
From Eddie Van Halenâs hot-rodded sound to the Allman Brothersâ glass-like bell tone to Jimiâs blank sonic canvas to Billy Gibbonsâ harmonics circus, a Marshall was powering all of it.
But how can a single amp circuit produce such a wild variety of tones? Easy...if the overall tone package is a car, the amp is really just the engine, the guitar the transmission, and the speakers are just about everything else.
***
Before we go on, I want to set a few parameters.
The world of tone is multifaceted with tons of variables, and itâs hard to put things in black and white to easily categorize stuff, but I think itâs a good idea to set some benchmarks before moving forward.
Magnets: Ceramic vs. AlNiCo - the magnet is the most important part of a speakerâs character. Ceramic speakers have a faster response and a more strident natural tone because they typically more hi-fi color the sound less...whereas AlNiCo speakers have more dynamic character that is less harsh in all registers but imparts more unique color. Ceramics are typically cheaper and lighter.
There are also newer Neodymium speakers that are MUCH lighter but Iâve yet to play one that sounds good on guitar (bass is a different story).
Efficiency pt. 1: High vs. Low - efficiency in regards speakers refer to the wattage handling capability and dB they can handle. Say you have a 30w amp and two cabinets...one with a 25w speaker and one with a 65w speaker. The distortion you get from the amp going into a 25w speaker will be more intense, come on a lower volumes and you will get quite a bit of speaker distortion...the result of more signal than the speaker can handle. Any distortion youâd hear coming through the 65w speaker would be purely from the amp, as the amp isnât powerful enough to overdrive the more efficient speaker.
Low efficiency is not a bad thing whatsoever. Youâve likely heard a Queen song, unless youâre from Kansas...Brian May has used a Vox AC-30 his entire career, with two low-efficiency 15w Celestion Blue speakers. The low-efficiency speakers in the AC-30 (30 watts) is an essential ingredient to their iconic tone.
Efficiency pt. 2: dBâs - Comparing a Celestion Blue to a Celestion Creamback (65w), the Blue has a max of 100dB vs. the Creambackâs 97dBâs. This doesnât sound like much difference, but dBâs arenât linear. This difference is essentially the difference between the loudness of a power mower and a garbage truck.
Color: Hi-Fi vs. Color - Efficiency and type of magnet arenât definitive in their own right. You can have a high-efficiency speaker with any type of magnet...and it can still be very unique sounding or not impact any influence on the sound, and anywhere in between.
A Celestion Vintage 30 is one of the most hi-fi speakers ever made...but just because itâs a ceramic magnet with a relatively low-efficiency doesnât mean thatâs how itâs employed. Compared to a Celestion AlNiCo Gold...a speaker with an AlNiCo magnet and a 90w efficiency...the Vintage 30 is still going to produce a more pure, unaltered tone coming from the same hypothetical amp.
Think about it this way (assuming amp is running in sweet spot):
High Watt Amp + High-Efficiency Speaker = CLEAN
Low Watt Amp + High-Efficiency Speaker = CLEAN w/ SOME DIRT
High Watt Amp + Low-Efficiency Speaker = DIRTY
Low Watt Amp + Low-Efficiency Speaker = VERY DIRTY
***
Above we have the Celestion Greenback...the most iconic speaker in rock history...a speaker that should have the same reputation as the Marshall Super Lead amp enjoys. They should be talked about in concert, given the fact that theyâre entirely symbiotic.
The tones youâve most likely heard a Marshall being played through are through a set of four Greenback speakers. Led Zep, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Jimi, AC/DC...all those musicians I mentioned above...almost all of it was a Marshall running through Greenbacks.
The Greenback is a very low-efficiency speaker with a ceramic magnet. It distorted so easy, you could get it overdriving with a dirty look. The Greenback overdrives at lower volumes (still blisteringly loud), but when the amp is seriously pushed, thatâs when the glorious overdrive Marshalls are known for come out.
The speaker below that is a vintage JBL d120f. These speakers were originally used in Fenderâs bigger blackface amps because theyâre the epitome of high-efficiency, and will not distort. Theyâre ultra clean, ultra hi-fi, and a lot of people hate them because theyâll expose all sorts of flaws in your playing, if you donât have your shit together.
Sound examples in next section.
***
youtube
youtube
Between all of the guitarists here...Billy Gibbons, Duane Allman and Dickey Betts...theyâre all using Gibson Les Pauls running through the same Marshall, but get quite different results.
Even at their most distorted and overdriven, the Allmans still sound relatively clean with the notes being able to ring out with clarity and not mushing together. Especially when compared to Billy Gibbonsâ solo on âTush,â where...even being relatively clean compared to his later stuff...he creates this massive wall of sound.
Clarity and distinctive notes is not something necessary for ZZ Top. A trio needs to do more to fill up the space a 7-person band can...and conversely...a 7-piece band with two guitarists playing like Billy Gibbons would turn to pure mush with a quickness.
The speakers are the difference. Billy Gibbons using the low-efficiency Greenbacks, Dickey and Duane using the high-efficiency JBLâs. This isnât even going into the tonal characteristic differences...that crystalline sound the Allmans get would be almost impossible to get with a Marshall amp loaded with Greenbacks.
***
There are a bunch of other important variables that come into play...the number of speakers, the cabinet design, porting, size, etc...it gets complicated quickly. Even more complicated when you talk about licensing and the cheap Chinese versions of these speakers that come from the amp manufacturers that want to save some money vs. buying UK Celestions or whatever.
But speakers impart tonal coloring and handling thatâs as important to a guitaristâs tone as the amp delivering the signal. One of the most hallowed amps of all time, the Fender tweed Bandmaster, is prized not because of its unique circuit, but rather the fact it combined three 10âł speakers, producing a tonal output that was totally different than other amps.
It wasnât the kind of speakers used that was special, it was the combination and layout that led to special output. The amp itself is nothing special. Fender tweed amps, Marshall plexiâs...these amps are about as primitive as they get. Not a whole lot of EQ going on, no special things like vibrato/tremelo, really just an engine to drive a signal and not much else.
The speakers are whatâs carrying the load. And itâs strange that theyâre not considered as essential a part of the equation as amps or guitars (or pickups and effects). You can take the same amp, and itâll sound and behave wildly different based on what speakers itâs running through.
***
Thatâs enough for today.

Choosing a Rare Earth Magnet
To describe two types of magnetic material, the term rare earth magnet is a generic name used: Â neodymium iron boron and samarium cobalt. Â Utilizing rare earth elements, both of these magnetic alloys as the magnetic constituents lend themselves to specific applications. They offer characteristics of both material types.
By Sumitomo and General Motors Specialty Metals, neodymium magnets were developed over 30 years ago in response to the rising cost of samarium cobalt. Â Neodymium iron boron from Magnet Factory in China since its inception has undergone a numerous enhancements, and this material is the most widely used and popular magnet alloy today.
Itâs also crucial to know that covering the production of sintered neodymium iron boron magnets, there are hundreds of patents. Â The neodymium iron boron supplied is compliant to all applicable patents and licensed.
To use relatively small amounts of magnetic alloy, this physical property allows designers when compared to other magnetic materials. Â Although might suggest for all applications, choosing a high strength neodymium magnet is the best choice, which is suggested by the smaller magnets and increased savings associated with neodymium.
To withstand corrosion may cause substandard performance and premature failure ignoring important characteristics such as the magnetâs ability or operating temperature. When the rigors of the application demand it, Alternative high temperature grades of neodymium iron boron and various surface treatments are available.
Between neodymium iron boron and samarium cobalt, there are few similarities Other than the fact that both are called rare earth magnets. When integrating samarium cobalt magnets with a given application Due to these physical engineers, designers and characteristic must exercise great care.
Samarium cobalt from other magnet materials also sets itself apart because it can function at high temperatures up to 662°F.  For high temperature / high strength applications, Samarium cobalt is often the rare earth magnet alloy of choice.

Watch Out Trump...
China May Weaponize âRare Earthâ To Retaliate Against U.S.â Ban On Huawei...
In what appears to be a hit below the belt and a coordinate attacks against China in the second phase of a trade war between the Middle Kingdom and the U.S., Trump has banned Huawei. The U.S. presidentâs executive order effectively prohibits U.S. companies from selling semiconductors to (or buying technological equipment from) the Chinaâs largest technology company. By adding Huawei to the so-called Entity List, American firms are essentially disallowed from selling technology to the Chinese company without first obtaining a license from the U.S. government. Washington claimed that the ban on Huawei was due to ânational securityâ. But every Tom, Dick and Harry knew Huawei is targeted due to the ongoing US-China trade war. Last year, Huawei purchased a whopping US$11 billion worth of computer chips and other components from American tech firms. That speaks volumes about how much the company depends on American chipmakers, the same way the U.S. companies rely on the Chinese tech giant for access to the nationâs market share. However, considering that Huawei successfully sold 200 million smartphones and hit 721.2 billion Yuan (US$107.45 billion; ÂŁ82.38 billion; RM438.67 billion) in sales last year, it would take more than just an executive order from President Trump to exterminate the Chinese giant. David Wang, Huaweiâs executive director, said that new U.S. restrictions would have little effect on the tech giantâs business prospects. Similarly, Huawei Technologiesâ founder and chief executive, Ren Zhengfei, blasted the Trump administrationâs decision and insists the Chinese telecom equipment maker has done nothing illegal. Mr. Ren also said the impact of the U.S. ban on Huaweiâs business will be limited, and expressed confidence in its longer-term outlook. But the fact remains that over 30 American companies supply core components to Huawei, including Qualcomm, Broadcom and Intel. Huawei, in its attempt to calm the business community, said it actually has been preparing for exactly the situation it now faces. Huaweiâs fully-owned HiSilicon Technologies, which designs core processor chips, has made plans to deal with a potential disruption in supply.
Huawei Android Chipsets
Hardware disruption is just one area which Huawei might be affected. In a stunning move that could threaten Huaweiâs global ambitions to take over from Samsung as the worldâs biggest smartphone maker, Google has dropped a bombshell when it announced its decision to stop licensing its Android operating system for the Chinese telecommunications firm â in order to comply with a U.S. trade blacklist. What that means is Huawei will no longer enjoy access to Android updates. It also means Huawei will only be able to use a public version of Googleâs operating system through the Android Open Source Project. A new purchase of Huaweiâs phone will also lose access to proprietary apps like the Google Play app store, Gmail and YouTube. Google, however, assures people with existing Huawei devices that they will still be able to use Google apps and download updates for them. Interestingly, the havoc of not being able to run Google apps only confined to international consumers. In China, itâs a totally different story as Huawei uses a modified version of Android that doesnât have Google apps pre-installed, thanks to Google service blockage. Because international shipments accounted for almost half of Huaweiâs overall smartphone sales in markets outside of China, the impact could be huge in the long term. In March, Huawei revealed that it had developed its own operating system for its consumer products if there came a time it was not able to use Googleâs or Microsoftâs. So, as early as 2 months ago, Huawei already knew their gadgets would probably be targeted by Trump administration. What is unknown is whether consumers can accept the Chinese tech giantâs own developed operating system. Days ago, Nikkei Asian Review reported that Huawei told global suppliers 6 months ago that it wanted to build up a year of crucial components to prepare for trade wars. That means Huawei may have stockpiled components to produce up to 200 million of smartphones. Knowing China, they probably have also figured out the workaround â probably via a third party â to download Android apps or services. But Beijing probably isnât impressed with Trumpâs little dirty trick of forcing American technology companies to suspend business ties with Huawei.
Huawei - 5G Technology Advertisement
When the official Xinhua news agency deliberately reported President Xi Jinpingâs visit to the countryâs rare earth mining base in Jiangxi province on Monday, it raises eyebrows. Chinese leaders have a habit of not trumpeting what they plan to do next, but would instead let its news media do the talking. Hence, speculations that Beijing could consider weaponize minerals such as rare earth against the U.S. Accompanied by Vice-Premier Liu He, Xiâs most trusted adviser whom was appointed as a special envoy with authority to negotiate directly on trade matters with the U.S. recently, the Chinese presidentâs visit to one of the nationâs major rare earths mining and processing facilities can be interpreted as sending a strong message of Chinaâs determination and defiance against the U.S. Rare earth is a group of metals and alloys that contain a set of 17 chemical elements that have magnetic and optical properties useful for making electronic components like computer memory, DVDs, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, catalytic converters, magnets and whatnot. Although not as rare as gold or silver, extraction and refinement of rare earth are costly and dangerous, not to mention âenvironment dirtyâ. For example, the Asian Rare Earth factory built in Bukit Merah, Perak, Malaysia in 1982 has seen radioactive pollution and health problems â infant deaths, congenital disease, leukemia and lead poisoning â even decades after it was closed in 1992. An estimated RM100 million was required to clean up the factory and dump site in Bukit Merah. As the worldâs biggest producer â about 90% of rare earth elements of the global supply â the U.S. depended on China for about four of every five tons of rare-earths imports between 2014 and 2017. The lack of domestic rare earth supplies would undermine a competitive modern economy and a strong military for the U.S. Yes, as it turned out, rare earth is a critical component to make weapons.
Rare Earth Metal Alloy Components
Terbium, dysprosium, samarium, praseodymium and neodymium are some high-tech names of rare earth exotic elements critical in making missiles and bombs, as well as electric motors and batteries for U.S. Navyâs destroyers. Rare earth element rhenium is a key component of jet engines for U.S. Air Forceâs F-15, F-16, F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Joint Strike FIghters. Sure, the U.S. can build their own plants to produce rare earth, if they donât mind the environmental issues. But that would take years. Blue Line Corporation, a US company, and Lynas Corp., an Australian miner propose to build the first rare-earths plant in the U.S. in years. Lynas, the worldâs only major producer of rare earth minerals outside China, faces regulatory issues at its processing plant in Malaysia. The strategic importance of rare earth in the present US-China trade war can be seen when President Trump exempted U.S. imports of rare earths from the latest round of tariffs imposed on Chinese goods. In 2017 alone, China mined 105,000 metric tons of rare earth metals, while the U.S. has only produced about 43,000 metric tons in the last 20 years combined. Hence, the visit to a rare earth plant by President Xi sends a message to President Trump â the U.S. may lose 80% of the supply of its rare earth imports anytime from China. The issue here isnât about the value of the rare earth imports by the U.S., but rather the supply chain. After all, the U.S. imported only US$160 million worth of rare earth from China last year. Clearly, losing the US$160 million business is just s drop in the ocean for China. So, to retaliate against the U.S.â ban on Huawei, China can easily deliver a deadly punch â bans export of rare earth to America. Beijing has actually weaponized rare earth before when it banned rare earth exports to Japan during a diplomatic standoff between the two countries in 2010. - FT

Bersediakah Najib debatÂ
tentang kleptokrasi?...
2. Pendedahan oleh bekas ahli Panel Penilaian Operasi SPRM, Datuk Lim Chee Wee bahawa Najib tidak disiasat atas kesalahan rasuah ketika beliau masih memegang jawatan perdana menteri kerana beliau memecat Tan Sri Gani Patail selaku Peguam Negara, menggantikan Gani dengan Tan Sri Mohamad Apandi Ali, yang hanya mempunyai satu utama agenda selaku Peguam Negara, iaitu untuk melindungi Najib daripada siasatan rasuah. 3. Pendedahan oleh Deepak Jaikishan dalam sebuah wawancara dengan Al Jazeera bahawa isteri Najib, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor adalah âperdana menteri de factoâ semasa Barisan Nasional masih berkuasa.
Najib tuduh saya obses dengannya. Beliau salah besar. - LKS

1. R Rajagopal, pengarah urusan Golden Mineral Sdn Bhd (GMSB) sebuah syarikat perlombongan hari ini mendakwa MB Terengganu berbohong kepada media berkenaan status sebuah GLC apabila mengatakan Permint Mineral Sdn Bhd (PMSB) telah dibubarkan. 2.
5. Samsuri berkata demikian ketika mengulas dakwaan Rajagopal sebelum itu bahawa kerajaan negeri menganiaya GMSB apabila PMSB enggan membayar RM15.3 juta ke atas kehilangan keuntungan GMSB seperti yang diarahkan Mahkamah Rayuan. 6. 8. Mahkamah Persekutuan mengekalkan keputusan Mahkamah Rayuan pada 14 Mac lalu.

How to Go Magnet Fishing
Magnet fishing is a unique type of fishing where you can use magnets to find lost items. The activity has its roots in the Let's Go Fishin' game, but has evolved to use mega-strong magnets and rope. Today, magnet fishing hobbyists use their finds to make a living, pulling out items from waterways, such as guns, bicycles, and trash. However, this hobby is not without its drawbacks. For instance, it is not uncommon for magnet fishers to find rusty refuse and even World War II grenades.
Although you don't need a fishing license to use magnets, it's important to consider a few things before you start fishing. First, make sure that you're fishing in an area where you can avoid disturbing animals below the water. This is especially true if you're fishing in a lake or river. Many fish will stay on the bottom of the water during spawning season, and dragging the magnet over the area can disrupt them. Another consideration is the size of your rope. While ordinary fishing line will work in most cases, it's not recommended for magnet fishing.
Finally, you should purchase a magnet with a high pulling force. The strongest magnets are made from neodymium, which are rare earth metals. You can choose from a single-sided, double-sided, or all-around 360-degree magnet. For beginners, it's best to buy a 300kg / 660lb magnet. However, if you're more experienced, you can always purchase a stronger magnet.
Where to Magnet Fishing? The best locations are areas with high traffic. These locations will attract a lot of visitors and may yield some interesting finds. For example, you can go magnet fishing in places where people often visit, like harbors and piers. Likewise, you can also fish in areas that are muddied and soiled by water. If you're going to be fishing in an area with a lot of pedestrian traffic, it's best to choose a location that is accessible by foot.
Magnet Fishing is a fun hobby that suits all ages. You'll need a strong rope and a powerful magnet. Also, you'll need a container to collect all the metal items you find. The magnetic field created by the magnet can pull up huge debris in the water. Because of this, you should always be accompanied by someone if you're doing it alone. If you're fishing off a bridge or pier, you could easily slip and fall into the water. Having a life jacket can make all the difference.
The strongest magnets are used in magnet fishing. Ideally, you should use one that can pull a few hundred pounds from the water. This is because ordinary magnets won't work as well when you're trying to pull heavy objects out of the water. You can use neodymium magnets for this type of fishing.

Neodymium Magnetic
The neodymium magnet is just about the most common forms of rare-earth magnets. Its magnetic properties help it become ideal for a group of applications. These magnets have grown strong and possess a large surface place. They are also easy to manufacture. This makes them the most versatile types involving magnets.
Several factors may affect the performance of a neodymium magnet, such as material's shape plus thickness. Larger magnets own greater pull strength, whereas thinner magnets often have a decrease pull strength. Another factor in which affects the performance of any neodymium magnet is definitely its proximity that will other magnetic products. Neodymium magnets can experience de-magnetization and decay their performance if they are exposed to high temperatures or even competing magnetic grounds.
The process associated with producing neodymium magnets is usually patent-protected. Although various countries produce neodymium, virtually all production is controlled by Chinese companies. While some vegetation pay the license fee to create neodymium magnets, others copy the task without paying for it.
Neodymium magnets are widely-used in a considerable amount of medical devices. They're just known for their ability to make a static magnetic field that may have a curing effect on some diseases. In addition, NASA uses these magnets to take care of the muscular tonus regarding astronauts during breathing space flights. They are used in molar distillation, palatal development, and orthodontic treatment options.
Neodymium magnets can also be used in state-of-the-art sound headphones. They provide richer sound by using full-spectrum bass. MRI scanners also take advantage of neodymium magnets. They allow experts to get a internal view of the human body without the chance of radiation. Additionally, neodymium magnets are used in of our separators in waste material removal and these recycling processes. These magnets will be excellent at getting rid of ferrous particles coming from waste, and they also improve image excellent.
Neodymium magnets have grown strong and use a higher coercivity as compared with ferrite or samarium cobalt magnets. Since these are so powerful, they must be coated so that you can prevent corrosion. Jointly be stored with a temperature of 60 degC or underneath.
Neodymium magnets have got many applications and so are widely available in different shapes and forms. Their abundance means actually not in small supply. They can be not expensive. They are long-term solutions with regard to different applications. These magnets are used in a good number of industries, including ionizers, filters, safety measures systems, and protection devices.
Neodymium magnets are generally extremely strong and are also ten times tougher than ceramic magnets. They are about 8 millimeters within diameter and personal training millimeters in time-span, and can generate a force of up to 1700 grams. This makes them a massive multiplayer replacement for ceramic magnets in a great many applications. Since they are so strong, they might be dangerous if touched. There have already been cases of men and women getting injured after being hit having a large neodymium magnetic.
Neodymium magnets are used in many diverse applications, from point-of-sale demonstrates to MRI scanners. Neodymium magnets could even be used to create a magnetic field about 1. 4 teslas.

Geocaching Block Magnets
A Block magnet is a great tool for geocaching. Smaller caches can be hidden in places like parks, forests, and wooded areas. A 4mmx2mmx1mm Block magnet will stick to a plastic container if glued to the container. When selecting the right magnet for geocaching, it is important to choose one with a strong pull force. The strength of the pull force will help you locate the cache quickly.
Magnetic blocks are also known as ceramic blocks, and are made of a combination of iron oxide, barium, and strontium carbonate. These magnets have a high holding power and are a popular choice for hobbies, arts, and science projects. Depending on the size, they can be large enough to hold several pounds. They are also available in smaller sizes that make them great arts and crafts magnets. While you may Chinese block magnet be tempted to buy a Block magnet to use for your next art project, remember that the strength of magnetic fields will be much less than if you had used a regular Magnet.
Another great option for creating a magnetic field is to create a Magnetic Separator and combine it with a Magnet. The magnetic fields produced by a block magnet are not completely blocked and cannot be eliminated, so this accessory should be used with caution. Besides, it can be difficult to ship larger units, so the despatch team will work closely with you to ensure a safe delivery. If you want to purchase a Block Magnet, consider buying a  for your tech. They can hold twenty blocks in one go.
The Magnet is an accessory that can be used for many different purposes. It has four Attachment Points and 1200 HP. It can be made by using . It can also be equipped on a tech and holds up to 20 blocks. The magnetic field can't be fully blocked, but the magnet can be protected from damage. However, if you want to prevent damage to your equipment or property, you should purchase a magnetic block to avoid contacting the magnetic field.
Neodymium Magnets are very powerful and may be used for many applications. A Neodymium Block Magnet can be used in various industries. Its magnetic strength can be adjusted to suit the application. A magnetic Block Magnet is the best option if you need a multipurpose magnet. You can also get smaller blocks for arts and crafts. If you're looking for a larger Magnetic Separator, the CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 license will allow it to travel safely.

Superconducting Magnets Market Segment Analysis - By Application
MRI Machines sector has been the primary market for superconducting magnets. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technology that produces three dimensional detailed anatomical images. It is often used for disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment monitoring. It is based on sophisticated technology that excites and detects the change in the direction of the rotational axis of protons found in the water that makes up living tissues. MRIs employ powerful magnets which produce a strong magnetic field that forces protons in the body to align with that field. When a radiofrequency current is then pulsed through the patient, the protons are stimulated, and spin out of equilibrium, straining against the pull of the magnetic field.

U/C Channel Magnets
https://www.magnetic-holders.com/products/c-channel-magnets/
Different from a normal cup(pot) magnet, the U-channel holding magnet is not round-shaped, and it is rectangular bar shape. The composition structure blocks bar magnets housed in a u-shaped steel shell. The magnetic adhesive force of the block bar magnets is significantly enlarged by the steel shell, meantime the block bar magnets are protected by the steel shell and avoid being damaged.
U-channel holding magnets are especially suitable for carpentry, kitchen installations, exhibition stand construction, shopfitting, signage technology, etcďźand used as rectangular base magnets. To make it easy to be mounting, the u-channel holding magnets are made with one or two countersunk holes for screws according to the length. The World Wants Greenlandâs Minerals, But Greenlanders are Wary
This huge, remote and barely habited island is known for frozen landscapes, remote fjords and glaciers that heave giant sheets of ice into the sea.
But increasingly Greenland is known for something else: rare minerals. Itâs all because of climate change and the worldâs mad dash to accelerate the development of green technology.
As global warming melts the ice that covers 80% of the island, it has spurred demand for Greenlandâs potentially abundant reserves of hard-to-find minerals with names like neodymium and dysprosium. These so-called rare earths, used in wind turbines, electric motors and many other electronic devices, are essential raw materials as the world tries to break its addiction to fossil fuels.
China has a near monopoly on these minerals. The realization that Greenland could be a rival supplier has set off a modern gold rush.
Global superpowers are jostling for influence. Billionaire investors are making big bets. Mining companies have staked claims throughout the island in a quest that also includes nickel, cobalt, titanium and, yes, gold.
But those expecting to exploit the islandâs riches will have to contend with Mariane Paviasen and the predominantly Indigenous residents of the village of Narsaq.
Until she was elected to Greenlandâs Parliament in April, Paviasen was manager of a heliport that provided one of the few ways to get to Narsaq, a village at the mouth of a fjord on the islandâs southwest coast.
The forces reshaping the planet â extreme weather caused by rising temperatures, and rising demand for electric vehicles and other green technology that require bits of rare metals â converge at Narsaq, where fishing is the main industry and most people live in brightly colored wooden houses with tar paper roofs.
Because of climate change, the nearby fjord no longer freezes so solidly in winter that people could drive their cars on it.
But rocky heights above Narsaq, population about 1,700, also contain what may be some of the richest concentrations of rare minerals anywhere. The lodestone attracted an Australian company backed by Chinese investors that had hoped to blast an open-pit mine â until it ran into Paviasen.
The mine would bring jobs and tax revenue to the village, but it would also produce radioactive uranium. That alarmed Paviasen, who in 2013 formed a protest group she called âUrani? Namiik,â Greenlandic for âUranium? No.â
âI was aware that this thing would affect us,â she said. âSo I had to do something.â
Paviasen is a guarded person who speaks softly and chooses her words carefully, at least when speaking English, which is not her first language. But she also has a reputation in the region for implacability whose opposition to the mine has made her into a figure of some renown.
In April elections for Parliament, Paviasen and her protest group overcame a determined lobbying effort by the mining company, Greenland Minerals, and swayed public opinion in favor of a party that promised to stop the mine.
The victory for Paviasen and her alliance of sheep farmers, fishermen and other residents sent a signal to all those eyeing Greenlandâs mineral wealth.
The lesson was that any project that threatened the environment or livelihoods was going to run into trouble from local people who were quite capable of standing up to powerful interests.
She is also aware that foreign money is still circling. âThe mining companies know what we have in Narsaq,â she said with a frown. âWe are not safe in the future.â
Greenlandâs Moment
With 58,000 people in an area half the size of all of Europe, Greenland has been a mecca for prospectors since the 1800s because of its geological history. Because there are almost no trees and sparse vegetation, it is much easier for geologists to read the rocks and find likely places to dig for valuable ore.
Climate change has exposed more potential deposits. Pacific-bound ships carrying ore can now sail across the top of Canada much of the year, shortening the trip to processing plants in Asia.
Reflecting Greenlandâs newfound stature, the United States has recently stepped up its diplomatic presence. Antony Blinken visited Greenland in May, four months after being named President Joe Bidenâs secretary of state, meeting with members of the newly elected Greenland government. Last year, the United States opened a consulate in Nuuk, the capital, for the first time since the 1950s. A delegation of U.S. officials visited Greenland last month and pledged aid to improve trade, education and the mining industry.
Anglo American, a British mining giant, has staked out swaths of an island believed to have lucrative deposits of nickel, essential for most electric car batteries. In August, KoBold Metals, a California company backed by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, formed a joint venture with Bluejay Mining, a British company, to search for minerals in Greenland using artificial intelligence to pinpoint deposits from mountains of data.
At the moment, only two mines in Greenland are active, one producing rubies and the other anorthosite, used in paints, plastic coatings and special varieties of glass. But dozens of companies have exploration projects underway, and five have licenses to begin digging.
Leaders of the new government in Greenland see the countryâs ore as a means to work toward financial independence from Denmark. Greenland has a parliament that oversees domestic affairs, but Denmark determines foreign policy and subsidizes the Greenland budget with 3.9 billion Danish kroner per year, or about $620 million.
No one believes that Greenlandâs reserves are big enough to make it the Saudi Arabia of nickel or titanium. Denmark would take a big share of any mining royalties.
A Promise of Riches
On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning recently, men drifted down to a dock in Narsaq lined with small boats. Some carried rifles on their shoulders and, in one case, a well-used harpoon. Some were on their way to hunt seals while another group planned to look for minke whales.
Other men â they were all men â simply watched and gossiped from mismatched chairs in front of a storage shed. Opposition to the mine appeared to be unanimous.
âMy children and grandchildren would also like to live in this town,â said Emanuel Joelsen, one of the whale hunters. Whale meat is still a big part of Greenlandersâ diet, and they are allowed under international agreements to hunt a limited number of animals.
Like almost all settlements in Greenland, Narsaq can be reached only by sea or air. Most people speak Greenlandic, the Indigenous language that is related to Inuit languages spoken in Canada and Alaska. The main employers are the government and a small factory that cleans and freezes halibut, salmon and shrimp caught by local people for export to Asia.
Narsaq residents were initially in favor of the nearby mine, attracted by the promise of badly needed jobs. âThey said people in Narsaq would be rich because of the mine,â said Niels Sakeriassen, who manages the fish processing plant.
But opinion shifted as people learned more about the project. Tailings from the open-pit mine would be deposited in a lake that lies above the town. Narsaq residents distrusted assurances by Greenland Minerals that a dam would keep radioactive water from reaching their homes.
Mining âthe Right Wayâ
Mining executives say they are aware of the need to pay attention to climate concerns. In August, rain fell for the first time at a research station at the high point of Greenlandâs ice sheet. It was a topic of discussion wherever Greenlanders gathered.
Some mining companies see a chance to establish Greenland as a reputable source of the raw materials for emissions-free power generation and transportation.
âYou can do it the right way,â said Bo Moller Stensgaard, a former Danish government geologist who is the CEO of Bluejay Mining.
He pointed to Bluejayâs plans to begin mining ilmenite, an ore that contains titanium, from a site hundreds of miles north of Narsaq. The ilmenite can be separated from the black sand that contains it using magnets rather than toxic chemicals, Stensgaard said, and the sand will be restored after mining is complete.
An Alternative to China
On the opposite side of the fjord from Narsaq is a mining project whose main backer has not generated the same hostility as Greenland Minerals. Greg Barnes, a veteran prospector from Australia, has a license to mine the area, known as Tanbreez. The site has only trace amounts of radioactivity, Barnes said from Australia, but rich deposits of metals like tantalum, used in mobile phones, and zirconium, used in fuel cells and various kinds of electronics.
Barnes may have unwittingly played a role in prompting Donald Trump to float the idea of buying Greenland while he was president. Word that Trump wanted to acquire the island from Denmark emerged soon after Barnes visited the White House in 2019 to brief officials on Greenlandâs potential.
While denying that he planted the idea in Trumpâs head, Barnes said U.S. officials âsee us as a solutionâ to Chinaâs dominance of rare earths.
So far Paviasen and her group have focused on stopping the Greenland Minerals project. But they are watching Barnesâ plans warily.
âA Lot of Money for Local Peopleâ
Greenland Minerals has kept a low profile since the April elections brought an anti-uranium government to power, but it has not given up on mining near Narsaq. The company is looking for ways to address local concerns, for example by shipping the minerals somewhere else for processing rather than separating out uranium in Narsaq.
Greenland Minerals promised to train local people to work at the mine and to buy from local suppliers whenever possible. It also commissioned studies showing that radioactivity from the mine would be negligible and that there would be minimal impact on the environment.
The project would âbring many benefits to Narsaq and southern Greenland,â John Mair, the managing director of Greenland Minerals, said in an email. âIt would be a significant economic stimulus for local businesses.â
Greenland Mineralsâ largest shareholder, with a 9.4% stake, is Shenghe Resources, which has close ties to the Chinese government. Mair denied media reports that Greenland Minerals is a stalking horse for Chinese interests, saying Shenghe plays a crucial advisory role. âThere are no Western world groups that can match Shengheâs proficiency and expertiseâ in rare minerals, Mair said.
Some local people support the mining project, though they tend to be less visible. âItâs about jobs, work, a lot of money for the local people,â said Jens Karl Petersen, a cook in Narsarsuaq, a former U.S. air base about 30 miles from Narsaq.
A League of Sheep Farmers
Aviaja Lennert with her sheep on her farm near Narsaq, Greenland, Aug. 22, 2021. Greenland has rare elements needed for electric cars and wind turbines. But protesters are blocking one project, signaling that mining companies must tread carefully. Carsten Snejbjerg/The New York Times
On a sunny day in August, Aviaja Lennert, who raises sheep on a farm farther inland from Narsaq, steered her battered four-wheel-drive station wagon up a precarious gravel road to the crest of a high ridge and braked to a stop. Below, icebergs slowly drifted in the blue-green water of the fjord. The only sound was the wind and the occasional âbaaâ of a sheep grazing on the steep, rocky slopes.
Lennert, who also works as a schoolteacher and rents a small house on her farm to tourists, walked briskly up a nearby rise and pointed at a slab of dark gray mountain above.
âThatâs where the mine will be,â she said.
Her sheep, raised for their meat, graze at the foot of the mountain. âIâm worried about my family,â said Lennert, who is married and has three children. âIâm worried about my sheep.â
Lennert and other farmers in the area, one of the few places in Greenland warm enough for agriculture, are among the most fervent supporters of Paviasenâs protest group. They are afraid that people would stop buying their meat, believing it tainted. The organizationâs symbol, a smiling orange sun, is painted on the side of Lennertâs barn.
Sheep farming in Greenland is not an easy life. The roads are so rough that some farmersâ children sleep during the week at their elementary school in a nearby village. A daily commute would be too arduous, even though their homes may be only 10 miles away.
In the spring when the lambs come, the farmers sleep for weeks in their barns to deal with difficult births. The rewards of such a life are impossible to put a price on.
âThis is one of the most beautiful places in Greenland,â Paviasen said. âItâs worth fighting for.â
âWe will stop the mine.â

Choosing a Rare Earth Magnet
The term rare-earth element magnet may be a generic name wont to describe two sorts of magnetic material: samarium cobalt and neodymium iron boron. Both of those magnetic alloys utilize Rare Earth Magnet elements because the magnetic constituents and therefore the characteristics offered by both material types lend themselves to specific applications.
Over 30 years ago, neodymium magnets were developed by General Motors and Sumitomo Specialty Metals in response to the rising cost of samarium cobalt. Since its inception, neodymium iron boron has undergone a numerous enhancements, and today, this material is that the hottest and widely used magnet alloy. Itâs also important to understand that there are many patents covering the assembly of sintered neodymium iron boron magnets. Here at Dura, the neodymium iron boron we supply is licensed and compliant to all or any applicable patents.
Of all magnetic materials (including other rare earths), neodymium iron boron offers the very best available magnetic energy density with (BH)Max values starting from 33 to 52 MGOe. This property allows designers to use relatively small amounts of magnetic alloy in comparison to other magnetic materials.
Although the smaller magnets and increased savings related to neodymium might suggest choosing a high strength neodymium magnet is that the most suitable option for all applications, this is often not always the case. Ignoring important characteristics like operating temperature or the magnetâs ability to face up to corrosion may cause premature failure and substandard performance. Alternative heat grades of neodymium iron boron and various surface treatments are available when the trials of the appliance demand it.
Most of the main Motor arc Magnets manufacturers (including Dura) offer charts and data describing the physical characteristics of obtainable magnets grades, including rare-earth element magnets. This information may be a huge help when selecting a rare-earth element magnet, but it's only a start line.
The different magnetic and physical properties of those two magnetic alloys means choosing the right rare-earth element magnet is more complex than locating a web vendor offering an appropriate size. Ultimately, selecting the right rare-earth element magnet is application driven, and your best bet is to talk with an engineer to debate your specific needs.
