Growing up, I LOVED libraries. I loved reading - so much, in fact, that the library staff would increase the limit of books I could check out at a time, simply because I loved reading, and I read *fast* (both are still true). I always participated in the summer reading programs, and once I earned all my stickers I would volunteer to hand out stickers and prizes. Libraries were also a safe haven for me - an escape from the dysfunction, abuse, and trauma I grew up with. The convenience, good pay, and relaxed atmosphere ("if there are no students to help, feel free to read or do classwork or whatever you want - you can even use the desk computers if you don't feel like dragging your laptop around") are all great perks, but I'm also joyful (yeah, I'm using one of the annoying words that annoyingly-aspirational bloggers and gramers use, but it really applies here) about working I'm a *library*. It feels like my home away from home - just as the libraries of my childhood did. 💗 📚 #library #studentworker #libraryemployee #HACC #HACCedu #HACCLancaster #college #adultcollegestudent #collegefreshman (at HACC - Lancaster Campus) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8aHMZbjmxH/?igshid=bzymct5zbxjm

So I helped my sister dye her hair red
My fingers are now stained pink. I go out on a Bookmobile route tomorrow for work.
Me: if certain patrons ask what happened to my hands tomorrow, I’m gonna say “well there was one gentleman who didn’t pay his fines….”
My sister: no what you do is pause, look down, smile, and say “nothing the police can prove.”

I work at the public library and today had to call multiple libraries for a “shelf check” [see if a book showing as available is on the shelf], because the patron was willing to go to whichever branch had the book available, but a few copies couldn’t be found. So while I was on hold, they helped me pass the time in an unusual (but not bad) way [conversation is edited for clarity]:
Them “Can I ask you some questions? There are no wrong answers”
Me “Sure”
Them “What color do you think of with the number 4”
Me “Light blue? But I was also staring right at the application form as you asked that” [which is light blue]
Them “Okay look at me. What color for August?”
Me “Green”
Them “Me too! The letter J”
Me “Red”
Them “My voice”
Me “Soft pink”
Person with them “What about mine?”
Me “Sky blue”
Them “Do you have a dog?”
Me “Yes”
Them “What color is your dog’s bark?”
Me “Umm... she doesn’t bark...”
Them “Really?? Whoa. What about when someone lies to you?”
Me “Ugly yellow”
Them “Ooo mine is blood red. Do you think people can have more than one persona or personality in their heads?”
Me “Yes”
Them “How many do you have?”
Me “Mmm I think three”
Them “Have you always had them or did they develop over time?”
Me “Either they developed or I wasn’t aware of them for a long time.”
Person with them “Never heard that answer before, but that makes sense!”
Them “Are all three the same gender and sexuality?”
Me “Actually, yes and yes. I think I’m lucky that I’ve never questioned the gender assigned to me at birth. It’s definitely cis privilege.”
Them “It’s cool you’re aware of that. Do you think simultaneously?”
Me “Do I what?”
Them “How many “tabs” are open in your brain?”
Me “Oh my god. ALL the tabs. So many tabs!”
Them “Can you read people’s energy when you walk into a room?”
Me “Sometimes”
Them “Do you get overwhelmed with large groups of people?”
Me “More often then not”
*At this point, the book they want has been found, and I give them the address of the branch*
Them “So you’re a really strong empath!”
Me “I’ve been told that’s a blessing and a curse. Do you need anything else?”
Them “Nope, and thanks for indulging my questions!”
Me “No problem! Have a good day!”

Most of this article is behind a pay wall (Sorry!). Nonetheless, it’s good. A lot of libraries have subscriptions to CT. #readmywifescopy #libraryemployee
