365 Promises of God
Day 340 – You Are Not Under the Law
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (Gal 5:18 NKJV)
Read: Romans 6
One of my favorite western movies is one you might never have heard of. This 1962 movie starred Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne, an unlikely combination both on screen and in the plot. Stewart plays a young lawyer named Ransom Stoddard, who is beaten and robbed by a local western outlaw named Liberty Valance. Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) and his handyman find Ransom and take him to Shinbone, where Tom’s girlfriend Hallie nurses him back to health.
Tumblr media
Ransom learns that Valance frequents this small western town, terrorizing the citizens, because the local marshal is a coward. Ransom wants to bring Valance to justice through the Law and due process, but Tom, a hard-bitten weatherbeaten tough guy, tells Ransom, “Out here, ‘due process’ is a bullet.” Tom is positive that Valance will not be subdued by any legal means.

That line of John Wayne’s stuck with me. I even had it as a system alert when my Windows 95 computer crashed, which it did often. There’s a part in every one of us that wants to be the Law, to punish the evildoer. Especially in these latter days when it seems the law of the land is designed more to protect the criminal than the victim.
Tumblr media
There’s also some hidden part in many of us that believes we are above the Law. Certainly, Liberty Valance believed he was. And many Christians use the promise today to convince themselves that God doesn’t expect them to obey anymore. That they can’t be held accountable. Nothing could be further from the truth, dear Christian.
The Apostle Paul makes it very clear in Romans 6 that we are no longer under the penalty of God’s Law, and the eternal punishment waiting for those who think they can get to heaven by obeying the Law. You see, Rom 3:23 makes it clear that ALL have sinned. And Rom 6:23 tells us that the wages for that Sin is death. Rev 21:8 makes it clear this death is a lake of fire for all unbelievers. The end of Rom 6:23 though tells us that God’s gift for us is eternal life, which can only come through Christ. So, it’s a promise that God will no longer judge us by the Law, for the penalty of that Law has been paid FOR you, by Jesus.
Tumblr media
But in this new life that we live, under Grace, we are called to follow God, and obey the law of Love. To love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and spirit. And love our neighbor as ourselves. If you do this, you won’t lie to them, cheat them, commit adultery or murder. You won’t chase after idols. You’ll remember to honor God not just on the Sabbath, but EVERY day. Not out of fear, but out of Love.
Prayer:
Father God, may I obey you out of love, today. Amen

I can't even be highly impressed by the fact that I can hear an american accent by sheer vibe despite the guy talking the heaviest french accent ever in the Lucky Luck opening without thinking about you !

gotta say whoever did the casting for the man who shot liberty valance made a funny as hell decision to set jimmy stewart and john wayne of all people as romantic rivals. they've got this poor woman choosing between two guys with competing brands of complete and total sexlessness. all the carnal energy in this movie is coming from lee marvin mostly and also from lee van cleef with his weird, overly angular facial hair
