Meet India's first aircraft carrier- INS Vikrant. Originally a British Navy Ship named HMS Hercules, India purchased the carrier in 1957 and commissioned it in 1961 as the first aircraft carrier of Indian Navy. The ship played a vital role during many wars. In December 1961 the ship was deployed for the annexation of Goa(Operation Vijay) from the Portuguese Indian territory. Due to growing war with Pakistan it was difficult and dangerous to keep the carrier exposed. The major threat was during Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 when Pakistan deployed US-built submarine PNS Ghazi. Ghazi specially reached Bay of Bengal to destroy INS Vikrant. But Ghazi, meanwhile itself sank off the Visakhapatnam coast under mysterious circumstances. After that Vikrant supported a naval blockade of East Pakistan. After many years of service she was formally decommissioned on 31 January 1997. . . When Sikkim wasn't the part of India. . . Sikkim was under the rule of the Chogyal Dynasty. In 1890, under the rule of the British, it became a protectorate state. This meant that it came under the jurisdiction of the British. It acted as a buffer state between China and British India. In 1947, according to a treaty Sikkim’s foreign policy, security and communication came under India’s realm. Yet Sikkim retained its independence. Sikkim’s last monarch Palden Thondup Namgyal married an American, Hoppe Cook. It has been said that she took over the governance of Sikkim after her marriage. She was also accused of being a CIA agent. In 1975, the people of Sikkim rebelled against the monarch which led to its official merger with India. Indira Gandhi after becoming PM established RAW, which carried out an important role to annex Sikkim and to liberate Bangladesh. Almost 98% of Sikkimese voted to join India. In 1975, IPS officer Ajit Doval, who is also the present National Security Adviser went from Mizoram to Sikkim and handled the entire operation. Sikkim’s first chief minister Kazi Lhendup Dorjee was supporting India throughout this. Sikkim was made a part of India after the 35th Constitutional Amendment. It was on 16 May 1975 that Sikkim, India’s least populous state officially became a part of India. . .
