#liberal use of Xanax ambien and melatonin

I genuinely don’t understand how any patient gets a wink of sleep while hospitalized
The pillows are all crinkly, making noise with every movement
The bed has two huge blue screens lighting up the room
The bed can have alarms to sound if the patient gets out of bed, sits on the side of the bed, or even if they just move in the bed (which is appropriate depending on the patient’s condition: we don’t want patients to fall accidentally)
If the bed alarm is off, a fucking light flashes orange/blue the entire time you’re in the bed
Overhead pages
The person next door flushing the toilet
Doors closing
People talking in the hall
Any kind of rapid response anywhere nearby (lots of people talking very loudly, plus more alarms going off)
Q2hr status checks, q4hr skin checks if at high risk for pressure injuries
Patients with altered mental status shouting or even screaming down the hall
Meds being administered at all times through the night
Good grief
#well I know how they sleep:#liberal use of Xanax ambien and melatonin#and I say that with zero judgement#there’s one drug for a super rare sleep disorder but I don’t remember the name right now#you have to be sitting in bed to take it#because about thirty seconds after ingestion#you are OUT just like flipping a switch#and you will be OUT for about 8 hours whether you like it or not#anyway sometimes I’m like: I need some of that shit right about now#after my first colonoscopy when I had propofol (dipravan) for the first time I was like#oh yeah I totally understand why Michael Jackson was using that stuff to sleep#the anesthesiologist was right: that was the best sleep of my life
