Two Small Measures for Planning a Budget Tibet Tour
The world's highest plateau is Tibet. This enchanted country is the subject of far too many stories and legends, drawing travelers there each year. For travelers on a limited budget, knowing how to organize a Budget Tibet Tour is crucial, regardless of whether they are planning a quick trip to Lhasa, an Everest Base Camp tour, a lengthier pilgrimage tour to Mount Kailash, or an overland trip to Kathmandu. Furthermore, because Tibet is so isolated, travel expenses there are often greater than in other parts of China. For your vacation to Tibet, there are eight strategies to cut expenses.
Participate in a Small Group Tour
Tibet does not allow independent travel by foreign visitors. So you must hire a tour guide to accompany you all the way, and the tour guide fee cannot be reduced. Furthermore, Tibet is huge, and the majority of the prominent tourist sites in various places are separated by long distances. Outside of Lhasa, you cannot utilize public transit and must rent a private vehicle to go there, incurring additional costs. In light of this predicament, numerous Tibet travel firms have launched Tibet small group trips for budget tourists, particularly lone travelers. Joining the Best Price Tibet Tours will save you at least 25% over a solo trip since you can share tour guide expenses, car and driver fees, single hotel supplements, and food costs with other group members.
Take the Train to Tibet. Rather than flying to Tibet
If you just have a little time to spend in Tibet, flying is a speedy method to get there. However, if you have enough time, it is an inexpensive method to board a Tibet train from major Chinese cities such as Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xining, and Xi'an. Furthermore, the fastest and least expensive way to go from Xining to Tibet is via rail. By the way, the Qinghai-Tibet railway is worth experiencing at least once because it is the world's highest train for Budget Tibet Tour China and you will witness incredible plateau beauty along the way that you will not see anywhere else.

How to get to Everest Base Camp (EBC) from Nepal?
Everest Base Camp is a dream destination for many tourists to see the great Mount Everest. There are two camps in Tibet and Nepal respectively. This guide will explain how to get to Everest Base Camp from Nepal.
There are two camps on Mount Everest
There are two organized Everest Base Camps on opposite sides of the highest mountain in the world - Mount Everest. The one on the Nepal side is called South Base Camp and is at an altitude of 17,598 feet. (5,364m). The other is in Tibet at 17,060 feet (5,200 m) and is known as North Base Camp. These campsites are rudimentary and are used by climbers to ascend and descend on expeditions. When ascending from the Southeast Ridge and Northeast Ridge, South Base Camp and North Base Camp are used respectively.
South Base Camp in Nepal
It is the most popular route for trekking in the Himalayas. Thousands of climbers use this south-facing park every year. To reach here, travelers usually choose a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu and start the journey in the morning. This can make the trek more enjoyable. To visit this camp, it is necessary to obtain certain permits and certificates, including Nepal travel permit and foreign travel permit, etc.
North Base Camp in Tibet
North Base Camp is located in Zhaxizong Town, Tingri County, Shigatse Prefecture of Tibet Autonomous Region, about 600 kilometers from Lhasa city. Everest Base Camp sits on a narrow pass at the foot of Mount Everest and is the closest point for ordinary tourists to see the world's highest peak.
Visiting a camp in the South is better than in the North
If you are looking for some adventurous trip then you definitely need to visit South Base Camp. There you will get chance to hike to Everest Base Camp. On the way to the EBC there are so many beautiful scenery to explore and enjoy like picturesque villages, terraced fields, and lovely rhododendron and pine forests. There are also many establishments like tents and tea house etc where you can take break for some time.
How to reach South Base Camp from Nepal
Generally speaking, if you are in Nepal and want to go to EBC, you must first apply for a Tourist Group Visa and Travel Permit to enter Nepal. The travel agents based in Kathmandu can help you get them.
From Kathmandu fly to Lukla and proceed to South Base Camp
Many people fly to Lukla from Kathmandu. There are several flights daily that take 25 minutes to arrive. From Lukla, the trek starts to Namche Bazaar (3,440m), a Sherpa town with many hotels, restaurants, shops and more. Since it takes two days to reach this place, it is recommended to rest for a day and enjoy it. Then, for the next two days, the trek continues to Dingboche (4,260m), and a rest day is recommended for more activities. Then, following the trail through Gorakshep, the plateau below Mount Pumori and Kala Patthar, you will take another two days to reach South Base Camp. The entire journey from Lukla to Everest base camp usually takes 8 days.
Kathmandu to Jiri and trek from Jiri to Everest base camp
Another route is from Kathmandu to Jiri, a small town in the lower Everest region, and from Jiri to Everest Base Camp via Lukla. The journey from Jiri to Lukla takes about 3-4 days, but it is not popular but peaceful and pleasant.
After that, from Lukla to Namche Bazaar, the journey continued. And then you can take the same route from Lukla to Everest Base Camp as mentioned above, passing through Dingboche and Gorakshep on the way.
Fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa and then to EBC
You can fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa first and then choose to drive to Tingri, following the friendly road. After Tingri, you will turn south towards the Mount Everest Natural Reserve, and drive another 100 kilometers to reach the Everest Base Camp. Traveling from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp, you will pass Tibetan tourist villages such as Gyantse, Shigatse, Lhatse, as well as famous tourist spots such as Yamdrok Lake and Karola Glacier. The amazing landscape of the Tibetan mountains makes the trip very interesting and memorable.
Packing list
It is really important to pack your things properly for a safe, comfortable and hassle-free travel experience because it will get cold out there. Here is your list in full:
1. Bring a fleece jacket and down jacket.
2. Wear at least 4 thermal underwear. Also, take at least three to four t-shirts because sweat-absorbent cotton t-shirts will make you cold. A warm long-sleeved jacket is recommended. Take extra warm clothes like a sweater, a pair of thermals, 2 long pants and sweatpants. You can also get 2 pairs of wool socks and sports socks, 2 pairs of wool and synthetic gloves. Take a warm scarf or a muffler as it would be very cold in the mountains, especially above 3000m.
3. Take light and soft shoes or boots that will be useful when visiting nearby places and wear high-quality broken-in shoes for travel. Stock up on the perfect raincoat, woolen hat, sun hat and branded and pre-lined sunglasses.
4. It is recommended to sleep warm and comfortable in the underwear because it will keep you warm in winter. A hot water bottle is recommended.
5. Choose a toilet-friendly, stocked with good SPF sunscreens, travel towels, lip balm, cold cream, body lotion and, for those days you can't shower, baby wipes.
6. Take water purifiers, because you can drink water from lakes and rivers along the way.
7. Prepare your own medical kit which should contain anti-diarrheal medicine, antibiotics for heart or other sinus infections, as it is cold there and can get infected, bring adhesive bandages and adhesive tape.
Other action plans
1. It is wise to take the necessary time to recover from the illness affecting you. Pay attention to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, insomnia, shortness of breath and lack of appetite, these can be symptoms of upper respiratory infections.
2. Cover up well as the sun is strong here, use good sunscreen and make sure to reapply it regularly, wear long sleeves and long pants.

My old blue notebook is very rough, with scribbled notes of routes, ongoing costs and map marked up. My daughter accompanied me. We took a flight from Kathmandu into Lhasa on Saturday 5 April 1997.
We received a warm welcome from the many Tibetans we met — a life-changing experience for me, a homecoming — the landscape, buildings and the people merging, and overnight stays with Tibetan families wherever possible. Initially I had altitude sickness, tight headaches and vomiting. So tiring at first being at Lhasa altitude so suddenly — only 3,590 metres. We adjusted after a few days and criss-crossed many passes way higher than Lhasa.
We stayed in Lhasa for 5 days visiting the Jokhang Temple many times and the Potala Palace once. In the streets and markets, meeting people, arranging the many visas required for each step of our journey, hiring a 4-wheel drive vehicle, with a Tibetan driver and also a Tibetan guide. They made our journey a wonderful experience and kept us safe across the vast snowy high plains totally devoid of markings of any sort, not even tracks of other vehicles, no signs. Only Mountain peaks. We had to take everything with us, medicine, water, snacks, gifts and prayer flags.
On Thursday 10 April we left Lhasa for Tsetang visiting Gonkar Chode monastery on the way, not far from the airport. We also visited Tradruk Monastery. Stayed in Tsetang — not a wonderful experience.
Friday 11 April we took the Landrover on a ferry across the Brahmapurta — 90 terrifying minutes, then drove through desert to visit Samye Monastery for a day before returning to Tsetang for the night. Samye is amazing, wonderful.
On Saturday 12 April we visited Chonge tombs and continued via the Luga La pass at 4,600 metres. Views of the nomadic grasslands and lakes. We stayed at Tanzik Gov. Guesthouse — best place so far. Many yaks, horses, great birds, sheep and rabbit like animals. Saw Mawochock monastery from afar hanging on a sheer cliff face.
Owing to us not being granted access to military areas we were forced to take several round about routes doubling our journey so we could visit important places. The many extra hours in the vehicle were hard but worth it.
On Monday 14 April we arrived at Dowa Dzong capital of Lhodrak County. A drive up the winding pass of Gampa La at 4,794 metres. We looked down at the astoundingly turquoise Yamdrok Yutso Lake. Finally a tea stop in Nakartse. High plains, vast and empty without sign of humanity, then small villages with very friendly people. Then the high pass, the Monda La at 5,266 metres. This is high altitude. Prayer flags on piles of carved rocks at the top.
On Tuesday 15 April with visited Sekar Gutok, a military town. We continued to the 9 storeyed tower constructed by Milarepa. A place most difficult to reach — 32 km along a very deep sided gorge with rushing waters. We felt trapped in the gorge, perhaps the rushing waters would submerge us, we felt so small. This area with the famous tower is close to the Bhutan border. It feels like the end of the world. Finally a small village with lovely people and lots of children. At the tower itself we were well received. We hung prayer flags outside all around the building. Very special. This was our ultimate destination of the trip. We felt a sense of fulfilment, we felt blessed.
On Wednesday 16 April we travelled to Gyantse, a very large town where time has stood still for centuries after retracing our steps via the Monda La pass and along the side of Phuma lake, frozen over today. We turned off to Nakartse. We had a day around Gyantse visiting the great Kumbum stupa and the monastery. Next we went to Zhigatse where we visited the large and impressive monastery with many monks. A lively place. Nice place to stay.
We decided to make a 3 day detour on our road back to Kathmandu to visit Base Camp Mt. Everest on the Tibetan side. We also visited the nearby monastery. Main memory is of vastness, empty areas, only the wind breathing. Photographs Taken During a Journey Around Tibet in 1997 © Linda Griffiths
