Prior to the hanky code, queer men participated in different types of coded language. Travel books like Vagabond not only provided information on safe spaces throughout the country, but also sold branded jewelry which could be used to communicate queer identity through common knowledge of the publication. From the collection of @leatherarchives during my #researchvisit in 2015. #queerculture #queerdress #lgbtqculture #lgbtqdress #lgbtqidentity #queeridentity #gayculture #queerstudies #lgbtqstudies #hankycode #graduatethesis #mastersthesis (at Leather Archives & Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-YIkY1BcZu/?igshid=1i9phpviorcub

Photographs from the book Gay Semiotics: A Photographic Study of Visual Coding Among Homosexual Men, 1977 (republished in 2015). This anthropological survey of documenting queer male sartorial culture was all the proof I needed to convince my advisors that the hanky code was a worthy topic for a thesis. Renewed interest in Fischer’s work served as the inspiration for the 2016 music video to the song “House of Air” by Brendan MacLean. “Hanky Color Code, West and Christopher Streets, New York City, Summer 1975” by Hank O’Neal. Photograph. This was one of a few jump off points of my research, documenting the hanky code phenomenon at the height of its popularity. This display was most likely either a leather bar or a bdsm/erotica shop. This photograph was published in “Gay Day: The Golden Age of the Christopher Street Parade.” #queerhistory #lgbtqhistory #hankycode #thegayseventies #gayleather #queerleather #gaybdsm #queerbdsm #knowthecode #queerdress #lgbtqdress #queerculture #lgbtqculture #queeridentity #lgbtq identity. https://www.instagram.com/p/B2vNnDPBY7z/?igshid=ihiwisntv2qi
