Can we talk about how Alex only does anything impulsive when he's with Elliot in the movie? Like he's literally such an anal-retentive (love how I remember that word the day AFTER my psychology exam), meticulously planning everything - even when he "impulsively" gets pulled in to going to the frat party, he still gets changed and takes forever to develop some McStraight Traits with a side order of crazy toxic masculinity before they go 😂 These moments were just so cute like:

The first time they met and he just randomly got high for the first time and hung out with Elliot and Gretchen (?)

On the day deciding to go to a concert

The first kiss initiated by Alex was craz y cute

The second kiss at prom !!

I stan an uptight queen letting go of inhibitions !!

Basically, I know the movie had issues. It uses a goddamn extended animal metaphor in it's opening scene that feels more like the YA teen movie (Alex:"omg my friends are so horny!!" Friends:"lmao fuck I had sex this one time") like it's basically stating it's going to be tiresome. And, obviously, the film did seem like bierasure because of the way the concept was dismissed and stereotyped confusion with being bisexual -, but people are confused sometumes and some people come oht quite a few times until they figure out how they actually feel. Alex literally couldn't hold a boner without thinking about a dude so - at the most - I saw him as biromantic homosexual. Obviously some issues were never addressed, like the misunderstanding of words and Dell's character in general. It was 100% a mess of disney channel and then adult viewing. And white people. Lots of white people. Also Elliot disappeared for like half the movie um???

But you know what? It was a movie completely focused on the teen experience - JOHN HUGHES BUT WITH ACTUAL GAY REPRESENTATION. It looked at how being gay can be so confusing when you have very strong sensitive relationships with someone of the opposite gender and you're just not sure where they fit in your sexuality. Claire was sympathetic; she fell in love with someone that couldn't love her back. Elliot was adorable - and they didn't shy away from making his crush obvious, even if Alex identities as straight. I don't know about you guys but, as a queer woman, I'm still genuinely scared of ever showing I have a crush on someone like straight people can so easily do, because I don't want to scare them off with my "gayness". Maybe it's just a me thing but when I want to be with someone I usually just become their friends for the rest of my life because I don't want to fall into the category of what people perceive me to be sometimes - a scary gay girl that crushes on you so you can't be friends. Elliot was so not that and I freaking loved that. He was so happy in his own skin and I think that made a brilliant contrast to Alex in all the important ways. I like how it focused on genuine, awkward teen issues like having sex. THAT SHIT IS AWKWARD at least for the first time - plus, account for the fact you're not even attracted to the person you're having sex with. Yeah. Not a fun time. (Been there bro). And Strangelove was created by a wonderful gay director who stuck with the script for ten years because he refused to change it to include a large adult role !! What a legend !!

I love Alex Strangelove. I appreciate it's not a trailblazing movie bulldozing any competition, but it's better than Kissing Booth and it's does have a sweet, fuzzy element while still maintaining adult themes. Love, Simon is definetly a better watch even with its PG-13 appeal but I don't hate the movie and I understand what it was trying to do. I mostly enjoyed it minus the cringworthiness sometimes. 😆 - Bet you weren't expecting this to turn into a rant, huh?
