LGBT HISTORY MONTH SERIES → 1/28 - my beautiful laundrette (1985)
Starring Daniel Day–Lewis and Gordon Warnecke, and directed by Stephen Fears with an Oscar-nominated original screenplay by Hanif Kureishi, My Beautiful Laundrette broke major ground in its bold exploration of race and sexuality in Thatcher-era London. The film’s depiction of, and significance to, British South Asian and LGBTQ+ communities cannot be overstated. via studio voltaire

Mis Hanes LHDT+ 2023 : Gair y Dydd #6 -Anrhywiol
LGBT+ History Month 2023: Word of the day #6 -Asexual
Anrhywiol
(adj. Asexual)
Tumblr media
The first currently known use of ‘anrhywiol’ to mean asexual as a sexuality in Welsh comes from the Welsh medical journal Cennad cylchgrawn Y Gymdeithas Feddygol in 1986, which discusses the risk of prostate cancer to various groups. It mentions risk relating to ‘y garfan ddibriod ac anrhywiol’ (the unmarried and asexual cohort) and various clinical trials undertaken during study.
There is one other source for the term asexual in Welsh. The medical journal from 1986 is the earliest known usage of ‘anrhywiol’ as a human sexuality term in Welsh, but it also appears 6 years later in the 1992 edition of the Hippocrene Standard Dictionary – Welsh-English English-Welsh by H. Meurig Evans.
Since then it has seen a steady increase in usage and is being included in more and more Welsh language LGBT+ media.

Barnaby Edwards - Lil Nas X
(acrylic on toned card, 2023)
Lil Nas X (born 1999) is an American rapper, singer and songwriter who hit the big time in 2019 when his smash hit single ‘Old Town Road’ spent 19 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making it the longest-running number one in the chart’s 60-year history. During the song’s residency at the top, Lil Nas X shook the music industry by coming out as gay, the first artist to do so while at number one. The homophobic backlash which predictably followed, on social media and from within the country music and hip hop communities, is something he has confronted with warmth, wit and good-natured defiance: responding to a homophobic rapper’s rant about a pink outfit he wore to the Grammy Awards, he simply tweeted ‘Damn I look good in that pic.’ His provocative videos for subsequent hit singles like ‘Montero’ and ‘Industry Baby’ are acts of queer power in the grand tradition of George Michael’s legendary ‘Outside’ video, and it is their cinematic sweep that gives Lil Nas X his place in this exhibition.
The original of this portrait is for sale here.

Trans people in history 🏳️‍⚧️🌟 Chevalier D’Eon has been recognised by modern historians as trans, but there are also reports that indicate they might’ve been intersex as well. Regardless, they were a remarkable queer person in history. D’Eon was raised as a girl until about age 6 or 7, and then continued on as a boy as a condition of their father, Louis d’Éon de Beaumont, being able to inherit from his in-laws. Questions about Chevalier’s gender existed long before she started dressing as a woman in public. After being sent to England in 1762, rumours circulated about her true gender, and betting on whether she was male or female even made it to the London Stock Exchange. D’Eon tried to return home to France, from where she had been exiled by some unfortunate diplomatic intrigues. King Louis XVI allowed her to return under the bizarre condition that d’Eon dress as a woman. When the King offered money for a new wardrobe of female clothing, Chevalier readily accepted. Reportedly, d’Eon had no trouble at all complying with the terms of the arrangement. Later, when she returned back to England and was not under the constraints of Louis XVI’s directive, Chevalier continued to live and dress as a woman for 33 years, until her death in 1810. The controversy surrounding the Chevalier d’Eon excited imaginations for decades after her death. Her name became associated with trans people generally when English physician Henry Havelock Ellis coined the phrase “eonism” to refer to trans people. #trans #lgbthistory #lgbthistorymonth #lgbtqia #transgender #transpride #transrights #transrightsarehumanrights #lgbt #lgbtq🌈 #lgbtq #lgbtpride #lgbtcommunity #dragqueen #drag #dragrace https://www.instagram.com/p/CpilYKLOhHb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

What a film this is! On Tuesday I managed to get tickets for a q and a in my favourite cinema ahead of its release yesterday. Its a really good and important film and as a child of section 28 it can be hard to watch. The vacuum that law created which was filled with bigotry and robbed generations of LGBT kids role models growing up. During the q and a after the film, person after person commented on how authentic it was to there school experience and thanked the director Georgia Oakley who also explained it is only the third film made by written and directed by a lesbian with a lesbain lead. I might have the opportunity to see it again and I am more than happy to support this film. #film #qanda #lgbthistorymonth (at HOME Mcr) https://www.instagram.com/p/CohauslryqX5JIb1rhCqI9OZutk3M4lhKOpB5Q0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Every story begins with a word. As a young woman, Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew carried a word within her so potent that it spread through her every artery and vein. She carried it in secret until she was shown a different way and the word inside her turned restless and eager.
A stunning memoir of coming of age and coming out, Swinging on the Garden Gate: A Memoir of Bisexuality and Spirit describes a period of time in award-winning writer and teacher Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew’s life when she came to know bisexuality as an embodied manifestation of divinity. Andrew not only reconciles her United Methodist faith with her sexuality but realizes that her body is holy, her sexuality is holy, and the word she carried within her has always been holy.
The spark of spirit Andrew identifies in her body she also finds throughout the solid matter of life—in childhood, nature, creativity, loss, death, and especially the coming out process. Andrew brings a distinctly queer feminist lens to Christian teachings and answers the question innumerable young people have posed to her over the years: “Is it possible to be both queer and spiritual?” The act of bringing hidden, personal truths to light is transformative, and for Andrew, a universal calling.
This second edition includes a new note from Andrew as she looks back on its twenty-year history and a foreword by Bishop Karen Oliveto.
Available from inSpirit: The UU Book and Gift Shop.

Happy #LGBTHistoryMonth! This week’s #zine #review is of "She/They" by @julestheonly!
There's this quotation. I can't remember who said it or how it went exactly, but it's something like "Literature show us ways to live that we might never have found ourselves."
I thought about that because, in this cisnormative culture, we don't have a lot of non-binary role models the way we have for cis- men and women.
In this zine, Jules talks about their experiences with both of the titular pronouns. Their words are handwritten over photograph collages. It's sort of like a poem, I think. The ending imagery was especially heartfelt; I'm glad I got to read it.

In honor of LGBTQ History Month!
Daniel Nicoletta (born 1954) has been the leading chronicler of the LGBT civil rights movement in San Francisco over the last 40 years. “LGBT San Francisco: the Daniel Nicoletta Photographs” chronicles LGBT civil rights movement and images of Harvey Milk, one of the world’s first openly gay elected officials, who was assassinated by a homophobic colleague in 1978.
In the second photograph, a group of LGBTQ activists gather around the car, “Heels on Wheels” in 1990. One of them holding a poster that reads “June 27, 1969” which references the Stonewall Uprising in New York City.
LGBTQ history has much to celebrate, at the same time we shall not forget those who have paved the way.

As this month marks LGBT+ History Month, this poster is a bright and clear reminder to be proud; proud of the progress we have made, but also proud to stand up and fight for the battles yet to be won - towards a future and world without stigma.

Valloween is fast approaching, and it's LGBT History month, so I guess it's time to remind you I have these little anatomical hearts on my website! As well as my usual Pride flag hearts, (and £1 from every sale going to an LGBTQ+ charity - this year's to be decided soon!), I'm also making up some random coloured dudes, (for the lady who asked me if I will ever have any """normal""" hearts 🙄😏). These little hearts are approximately 3" (10cm) in diameter and are perfect letter box gifts for someone you love, like or barely tolerate. And if you feel REALLY creative then I have the cross stitch patterns available too, so you can have a go at making one yourself. Perfect for beginners! PLUS if you're the parent of an LGBTQ+ child and would like to get crafty with them by stitching up some Pride hearts for LGBT History month, I'll happily send you the PDF pattern files for all five of my current flags for FREE - just drop me a DM here or on my website! 💚 More flags and """normal""" colours coming soon... 🤪 www.embRUDEry.com (Link in bio) 🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀 #valloween #lgbthistorymonth #pridematters #anatomicalembroidery #MHHSBD #CraftBizParty #justacard #keeponshoppingsmall #QueenOf #SmartSocial (at Canterbury, Kent) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZhzkiNsYPX/?utm_medium=tumblr

Barnaby Edwards - E.M. Forster
(8B pencil on paper, 2023)
Today’s LGBTQ+ hero is the author E.M. Forster (1879-70), one of my favourite writers. He skewered the hypocrisy, racism and stupidity of the British Empire in the early 20th-century. He also wrote one the best gay love stories of all time: Maurice. It was so autobiographical, it wasn’t published until after his death.

For #LGBTHistoryMonth, we are featuring material from our archival collections and our digital collection, PRIDE! of the Community, the first large-scale initiative to document the #LGBTQ+ history of the Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point) area of NC. This week, we are featuring the 1986 Gay & Lesbian Community Calendar produced by the Triad Gay & Lesbian Network. Calendars such as this were important to the LGBTQ+ community, as it facilitated social networking at a time it was potentially dangerous to be openly LGBTQ+.

Let's celebrate the sapphic urge to spend the 1920s prolifically creating beautiful female gaze art of your wife. Here are some of Gerda Wegener's paintings of her wife, Lili Elbe. Gerda and Lili married in 1904 while Lili was living as a man. Both were painters, although Gerda was more successful. She painted portraits, fashion illustrations and even some er*tic scenes. Many of her works featured her wife as a model. In almost all of them, Lili appears as a woman, although in "Summer's Day" she appears as both the nude woman and the man at the easel. Why not seek out Gerda Wegener's work and see how many times you can find Lili in the paintings?⠀ ⠀ All paintings are by Gerda Wegener.⠀ 1. Hot Summer, 1924⠀ 2. Solitaire, 1928⠀ 3. From Les Delassements d’Eros, 1925⠀ 4. Woman with mask, 1925⠀ 5. Portrait with green feather fan, 1920⠀ 6. From Les Delassements d’Eros, 1925⠀ 7.
