So if beings of stardust au eclipse can hypnotize people how exactly does it work?
He has a swirly eye that hypnotizes others! So they have to make eye contact! It can be avoided but it's hard to not look him in the face! While hypnotized, the being is still present, just not in control of their body! Eclipse can't necessarily enter the mind and take the wheel, he can sorta alter the minds of others by "ghost controlling" in which he makes them think they're acting on their own will! It's like another form of gaslighting and manipulation! Also, once he's made eye contact and hypnotized, he doesn't have to continue that eye contact. Eventually, it'll wear off and he won't have control anymore but he can "reset the timer" of his control by making eye contact again! The further away the eye contact, the less time he has to control others! Also, mental strength plays a part in it! If the being he's trying to control has an extremely guarded mind, he can't control them very well, sometimes not at all! Also, if eclipse is weak or distracted, that can limit his abilities!

Why are Varys and Illyrio so naive as to keep trying to use people in their plots who have their own agendas? Illyrio sends Barristan to collect Dany vs one more likely to press *his* interests, he assumes that Daenerys will wed Aegon when all he offers is the GC (less men than Dorne even, and they provide no "in-house" legitimacy), he & Varys just assume Tyrion's support for their plan. Lf knows well that "even the humblest pieces can have wills of their own". Why do V & I have this blind spot?
I've mentioned this before - Varys treats everyone as if they are characters in a story he is telling, and that he can manipulate them as such. His Aegon plot has monumental hubris, so believing that most anyone can be manipulated to follow his agenda is par for the course. Same with Illyrio, he's been working at it a long time. Of course, though, remember that they are underestimating who they're dealing with. They think Barristan is blinded by loyalty (and they are largely correct in this) and they think Daenerys is just a meek girl to bowl over. So, they probably don't think they can manipulate everyone; that's why Robert, Stannis, Eddard, Tywin, etc. are going to be dead for their plan to work.
Thanks for the question, Anon.
