Jesper as Everett C. Marm AKA the Harlequin, a clownish rebel. As Jesper is the best dancer in the troupe, it makes sense that he has the lead dance role. The style is best described as acrobatic street ballet.

Ingvar as the Ticktockman, the time-obsessed government agent and villain. Ingvar's eyesight gives him trouble dancing, so the Herons work in roles that let him use his acting skills/intimidating presence without too much movement. The Ticktockman moves in straight lines while the chorus dance around him.

Hal as Chorus / the Minee, the Ticktockman's assistant. To be honest, this is mostly a size thing. He practically orbits Ingvar.

Stefan as Chorus / Pretty Alice, the Harlequin's lover and betrayer. This is a nice hefty character role Stefan can get his acting teeth into. He may get a song.

Lydia as Chorus / Marshall Delahunty, the man who tries to escape the Ticktockman's reach. Come on, don't you want to see Lydia perform a desperate tumbling obstacle-course escape across the stage only to have a dramatic death scene at the end? She'd kill it.

Edvin as Chorus / Georgette Delahunty, Marshall's wife. Another nice character piece with plenty of room for face acting.

Wulf as Chorus / Raoul Mitgong. A walk-on comic role. He doesn't help much.

Ulf and Stig as the Chorus — along with the other Chorus-marked cast, playing Scientists, Minees, Workers, Coventry Guards etc. Ulf and Stig are good dancers but not the strongest actors in the crew. The chorus wear very basic costumes and switch characters quickly.

Thorn is their coach and AV tech, of course.

The journey time on the train from Coventry to Manchester was just over two hours. Every second felt like an eternity for Raymond as he kept hold of Amy's hand. He studied everyone who walked past, excusing themselves up the cramped aisle of the carriage. If Vaughan had been aware of Amy's location and told Lucas, then he obviously had eyes in various places. Between them, Vaughan and Lucas had a number of cards to play which would get them the whereabouts of Raymond and Amy.

"Are you okay?" Raymond asked suddenly, turning to Amy. He noticed that she'd been quiet since boarding the train. He squeezed her hand for emphasis and nudged a little closer to her.

"Yeah," Amy replied in a quiet voice, adding a weak smile. She looked at Raymond and couldn't help but feel something swell inside her chest and stomach, something intense and not quite the same that she had felt with any other partner. It was almost an ache in her gut that spread upward into her chest, a knowing somewhere that this man in front of her was true.

Amy leaned over and placed a gentle kiss on Raymond's stubbled cheek. "I'm sorry," she told him.

Raymond cupped her cheek and kissed her small nose. "Don't be sorry, love. There's nothing to be sorry for."

A short while later, about half way into the journey and Raymond brought himself and Amy a coffee each and some chocolate.

He noticed that she had nudged closer and was now sitting with her head on his shoulder. Her could feel her jaw moving against his shoulder, eating a piece of Twix.

Had Amy ever felt like this with Lucas? Content, protected, truly wanted and loved? Perhaps to a certain degree, but nothing like this. There was a longing in Raymond's eyes, a want for love, a yearning. She silently thanked him for not giving up on her, despite all her attempts to push him away. He had always remained in the shadows, waiting to catch her, knowing there would be a fall. Raymond was prepared to watch his cousin fall and succumb to the consequences, but never Amy.

Once the train pulled into Manchester Piccadilly, Raymond and Amy waited for the majority of passengers to disembark first. Then they walked with Raymond in front of Amy, his hand still in hers. His gaze flitted back and forth, checking across the platform, just in case anyone was there who looked suspicious.

Manchester Piccadilly was the last place that Raymond had been seen on CCTV. Tariq remained in contact with Lucas, texting him the whereabouts.

"John. Oh, John," Vaughan's manipulative and sly voice came, slithering down the phone line. "I know you want to keep up with that little girlfriend of yours, but our agreement still stands. The Albany file. My advice is that you bring me the file and nothing will happen to Miss Holland. She's in the safe hands of Mr de Merville from what I've been told."

"You fucking bastard!" Lucas spat.

"It seems as if she's taken a liking to your cousin, John. Your position has been filled."

"Fuck you!"

Lucas terminated the call and tossed his phone on the passenger seat of his car. His hands gripped the steering wheel, knuckles turning white. He needed to get to Amy, to protect her no matter what happened. Surely Vaughan wouldn't stay true to his word; Amy would still suffer.

Amy took money from her bank account, accessing an ATM around the corner from a hotel that was just two streets away from the train station. This was now the only access to her money and was traceable. Everything that she and Raymond did was traceable. CCTV, bank account activity, ANPR data; nothing was scared. Every step was identifiable.

"He'll find us, Raymond," Amy said. "You know he will. Lucas is resourceful, clever. He's got the means that we don't have."

Raymond looked up at the towering hotel block which was easily ten floors. "We can't stay at this one now that you've taken money out here. He'll know. We need to walk. Try and get out into the outskirts of the city."

Lucas finally made it to Manchester. The sun was disappearing, casting a great shadow on the land. Tariq confirmed that Raymond had last been spotted walking past a department store and was accompanied by an unidentified woman.

He scoured the city, glancing up and down murky backstreets as he walked. Still keeping his phone in hand, checking messages that Tariq sent through. By the time that it turned 7pm, Tariq text that Raymond had not been seen now for an hour and a half. He must have stopped.

Lucas took that last location, following a map on his phone. To everyone around him, he looked like a tourist maybe, someone unsure of their way around. Definitely not someone who was conducting covert activities. Blending in had become second nature.

The last location Raymond had been seen was at a junction, crossing the street and disappearing behind a hedgerow. In that same vicinity were three hotels, all of them approximately half a mile apart.

One by one, Lucas enquired with the clerk at the main desk of the hotels. The only way he would be able to get the information was to introduce himself as security services. And then, at the final hotel, Lucas held up a digital photo of his cousin on his phone, asking the middle aged man on reception if Raymond had been seen.

"Yes, I do believe I've seen him. May I take his name?"

"Raymond de Merville."

"There is no one by that name here," the clerk explained.

"You bastard," Lucas whispered. He was almost certain that Raymond wouldn't be dumb enough to use his real name. "I need to locate him. It's a matter of national emergency. Even if it means going to each room one by one, then it must be done."

"I understand. I believe if my memory serves me correctly that he checked in with a young woman and she was the one who paid."

"Amy Holland?"

The clerk tapped away on his keyboard. "No, I can't find her name. But I believe she was sent up to floor eight."

Lucas would wait however long was necessary and tear every room apart.

Amy sat down on the bed, her hands shaking. Raymond was sat across from her in an armchair, his gaze locked on the window. Raindrops were hitting the pane and dripping down, collecting on the ledge.

There was a sudden beep as the door lock activated and opened.

Terror hit Amy square in the chest as she saw Lucas staring at her, his jaw clenched.

The Nylons Are On Rick

“Rick!” urged Ruth while her partner grappled with the overweight German he had seized as the two OSE agents entered the cockpit of the airship. “That Adolf lookalike is trying to get us over Coventry so he can drop the load. You need to stop him! Let me finish off Herman here!” Rick Howard glanced at the woman and then looked over at the Nazi officer urgently attempting to pilot the Zeppelin towards the airspace over the city. He knew she was right. In one deft movement he threw the still resisting enemy officer towards Ruth and then flung himself at the moustached German, attempting to wrest the wheel from him. Ruth pushed her gun into the belt of her skirt and swiftly seized her wide eyed opponent’s wrist and put the surprised man into a vicious hammerlock, forcing his arm high up his back until he cried out in pain. Without even asking the German if he wished to surrender, the female agent simply fished out her spare pair of stockings from her skirt pocket and began to tie her furious captive’s wrists behind him, even as he struggled in her grip. “Unhandled me, woman!” the German gasped, but he was unable to free himself. “Calm down, Fritz, this won’t take long!” she told the man as she bound him.

Meanwhile Rick had succeeded in landing a blow on the other man’s jaw, sending him slumped to the floor of the cockpit, barely conscious. Howard slowly eased the wheel starboard, taking the huge ship away from the airspace over Coventry. Ruth’s face lit up with joy as she finished tying up her defeated adversary, even as his face collapsed into an expression of crestfallen despair. “Good girl, Ruth!” Rick congratulated his partner, glancing over his shoulder at the victorious young woman and her prisoner. “Can you get this other character tied up too and then radio Command and tell them Zeppelin LW23 is under new management and not to shoot us down?” Ruth tutted as she pushed the bound Goering lookalike up against the cockpit wall. “You’re very free with my nylons, Rick,” she smiled, “you owe me a pair when we get back to London!” Nonetheless she knelt down next to the stirring German and used the second stocking to bind his wrists together tightly behind his back as he lay, groaning, face down on the floor. Rick smiled again. “Nylons are on me, honey!” he said. “Not literally, I hope, darling!” laughed Ruth in reply as she proceeded to cleave gag the prone German with his own tie.

With the cost-of-living scandal is the government facing its next poll tax moment and why is much of the mainstream media not reporting it?

I was shocked to see a Tweet this weekend claiming that the BBC – and indeed the mainstream media as a whole – was not covering the huge Enough is Enough rallies that had taken place in Manchester and Liverpool. But I was quickly able to verify this when I searched the BBC website and found no coverage at all.

The march in Manchester was so large that much of the crowd spilled out of the cathedral and speeches were made outside. Here’s a rousing speech from the RMT’s Eddie Dempsey for example. It’s no wonder so many people are saying the RMT is now the official opposition party. Hats off to him and his colleague Mick Lynch who have set British politics alight this summer with their speeches against the cost-of-living crisis and corporate fat cats paying themselves millions yet refusing satisfactory pay rises to cope with the crisis.

You can see how huge the crowd is in the video, so why was this not reported by the BBC? Is it to do with the Beeb’s relationship with the current government? In other words, is the Conservatives’ editorial grip on the BBC so firm that the news desk dare not report on such a huge uprising against the party’s policies?

The lack of reporting certainly backed up Emily Maitlis’s recent speech, where she claimed that former director of communications to Prime Minister Theresa May and now BBC board member Sir Robbie Gibb was “an active agent of the Conservative Party”.

The event was absolutely packed to the rafters inside with well over 1,000 people gathered to campaign against the cost-of-living crisis which is set to plunge millions into financial turmoil, yet no one from the BBC thought this was worthy of a mention in their news coverage.

Speakers included Coventry South’s Labour MP Zarah Sultana who addressing the large crowd, saying:

“In fact, they are experiencing wealth and profits like never before. It’s a crisis for our class not theirs. For them it’s record profits. It’s a record number of billionaires. “They talk as if there’s nothing they can do to stop millions of people being plunged into poverty. And it’s not true. It’s a lie. They’re bullshitting us and we’re not going to accept it.”

Child poverty across the country

The government’s apparent attack on the working classes is certainly uniting the country. Up in Scotland, the bitter rivalry between Rangers and Celtic is well known, but now fans from both sides are uniting in telling this government that enough is enough.

Parts of the Northwest are now facing near 50% child poverty rates and this is before this winter’s explosion in energy prices and all the follow-on costs associated with these rises. Nationally, it is so bad now that four regions have child poverty rates over 50%, namely the Northeast, Yorkshire and Humber, London and the West Midlands.

Let that sink in. We are one of the richest nations in the world, yet in four of our nine regions child poverty is now over 50%. The government has been told for months of the impending crisis yet has been too busy holding their internal leadership battle – closed to just the 150,000 party members who are more likely to be “male, white British, a Leave voter, middle class and living in the south of England” – to put measures in place to stop people having to choose between heating and eating this winter.

We are now literally finishing these children’s childhoods right here and now.

Civil unrest is now likely

I can see civil unrest coming; this is going to get very real, very quickly. The situation will be made harder by the fact that many people don’t understand and haven’t been taught the basics of food preparation, such as making chicken stock. And I’m not talking about the poorest in our society, I mean the middle classes. I remember a few years ago seeing a family member throw away about 1/5 of a chicken as they “didn’t like those bits”. I would have been able to make two more meals from what she discarded.

This is likely to be on the same level as the winter of discontent, perhaps on a par with the post-war years. But back then home economics was more widely taught. Baby boomers grew up with skills that our current generation often doesn’t have, often because these skills simply haven’t been taught. My mum, for example, was a home economics teacher, a role Margaret Thatcher’s government largely got rid of in the 80s as it was ‘no longer needed’. Arguably this contributed to us becoming the fattest nation in Europe, with a generation that has become deskilled in some of the essential skills needed to survive this current crisis.

I’ll end on this fantastic quote from Dempsey. It sums up the situation in the UK right now, a situation that has built up over decades and that now looks like it is coming to a head. Enough is enough.

“When they say we need to modernise they mean we need to work harder for less pay. Well, that doesn’t sound very modern to me.”
