Herb Lubalin - Key Moments
1949 - He was working at Suddler & Hennessy, which was a pioneering brand in healthcare marketing, founded more than 75 years ago. During this time, he became one off the ‘pioneers’ of expressive typography.
1957 - Whilst still working at Suddler & Hennessy, Lubalin and John J. Graham created the original NBC Peacock logo, which is the most famous and well known NBC logo to date.
1961 - Herb Lubalin designed a trademark for the Saturday evening post, which it went on to use for several years.
1964 - Lubalin formed his own design consultant firm, Herb Lubalin Inc, which later evolved into what is referred to as the first international graphics cartel. Five years later, the firm was renamed, LSC Inc.
1964 - Lubalin used Pistilli Roman as his first typeface, which later comprised the trademarks of Lincoln Centre, the Metropolitan and the New York Philharmonic from 1978 to 1985. This typeface was collaboratively designed along with John Pistilli. It was later sold by Lettergraphs as Roman No.
1968 - The Avant Garde magazine was first released, which was the third major collaboration between Ralph Ginzburg and Herb Lubalin. The magazine went on to be published for 3 years.
1973 - Lubalin created a trademark for the World Trade Centre at its opening.
1984 - Although Lubalin passed away in 1981, he was awarded the Type Directors Club medal in 1984.
1985 - The Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography opened in 1985, which was created in order to preserve Herb Lubalin’s vast collection of work. Its goal was to provide the design community with a means to honor Lubalin and to study his innovative work.
