Here's our top five TCM picks for the week of May 18, 2020 1. Girl Crazy (1943) at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT Monday, May 18: If you need a Monday mood lift, tune into this MGM musical starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. The plot is fairly typical college movie fare, but the hummable Gershwin songs and energetic production numbers make it joyous viewing. 2. Mr. and Mrs. Smith (1941) at 2:15 pm ET/11:15 am PT Thursday May 21: Director Alfred Hitchcock's only screwball comedy (yes, you read that right) is sometimes dismissed by Hitch fans, but I think it's a charming comedy with stellar performances from stars Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery. Part of a daytime birthday tribute to Montgomery. 3. Kid Galahad (1937) at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT Thursday May 21: Star of the month Edward G. Robinson teams up with Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart for this fun boxing flick about a hard-charging promoter (EGR) who turns a bellhop (Wayne Morris) into the next big thing. 4. Casablanca (1942) at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT Saturday, May 23: Head into the Memorial Day weekend with this all-time classic about the colorful characters and undercover intrigue at a Moroccan watering hole. Filled with wonderful performances and timeless dialogue, Casablanca is a powerful tribute to the sacrifices of the Greatest Generation and a timely reminder of life's priorities. FYI: I'll be live-tweeting about this film on Saturday night. Join in or follow along at https://twitter.com/oldhollywood21 5. Wings (1927) at 12:30 am ET/9:30 pm PT Sunday night/Monday morning: The first best picture Oscar winner is this World War I action flick about two flying ace buddies (Buddy Rogers and Richard Arlen) who fall for the same woman (Clara Bow). The aerial combat footage is still quite impressive.

The only line that’s wrong in Shakespeare is ‘holding a mirror up to nature.’ You hold a magnifying glass up to nature. As an actor you just enlarge it enough so that your audience can identify with the situation. If it were a mirror, we would have no art.
