You know, I’ve been thinking today about how Alina doesn’t even really work as a Reluctant Hero, compared her to Frodo to see the key differences (since Frodo is pretty much the Poster Child for the Reluctant Hero), and then I realized... 

You know, I think L/eigh B/ardugo wrote TGT as a very black-and-white fairytale, where Alina is the princess, Mal’s the knight in the shining armor, and the Darkling is basically the dragon, except it doesn’t really work because the worldbuilding requires an approach that’s... a lot more grey? 

The thing is, though, I realized... Alina and Mal are basically meant to be Frodo and Sam. Except that, again... it doesn’t really work. 

Frodo works as a Reluctant Hero, because he makes it clear multiple times that he doesn’t want to carry the Ring. He asks Gandalf to do it for him, he asks Galadriel, he asks Aragorn, and they all refuse, because they are (or are called to be) in a position of power, and while them being in a position of power is presented as good, the One Ring essentially represents the fast, easy way to get to it, which will ultimately corrupt them rather than have them fight their way towards their goal. 

Frodo, meanwhile, is the right person to carry the Ring, because he comes from a humble place and he doesn’t really have any aspirations to become powerful. And while he’s clearly burdened by having to carry the One Ring, and that he makes it clear that he wishes the Ring had never come to him, he still goes on anyway, despite all the hardships he faces, because his ultimate goal is to save the Shire and his friends, and that desire is stronger than any fear or greed he may have. 

Now, J.R.R. Tolkien himself said that he didn’t really see Frodo as THE Hero, and that Sam is the real Hero of the story to him. Which makes sense, given how Sam was based off young men from rural England he met while fighting in World War I. But also, the story makes it very clear that without Sam, who’s arguably the most pure-hearted person in all of Middle-Earth, Frodo would have definitely failed in his task. The reason why he resists the temptation to carry the One Ring is LITERALLY because him protecting and helping Frodo is more important to him. Sam doesn’t give two shits about power. Helping Frodo save the Shire and coming back to everything he’s ever loved is more important to him. 

Both Alina and Frodo are pure-hearted orphans who are given tremendous power: Alina is the Sun Summoner, and Frodo carries the One Ring. In both cases, power is represented as a corruptive force, that makes people go mad with greed. It works in the context of The Lord of the Rings, given how the rings were given to leaders of Elves, Dwarves and Men, and that Sauron created the One Ring to rule over and control all of them. The Grisha, on the other hand, unlike the Ring-bearers, are not in a position of power, given they are essentially victims of Fantastic Racism in pretty much every country. While Ravka treats them slightly better than in Fjerda or Shu Han, it’s still not ideal and it’s something that could be taken away from them at any moment. It would be an entirely different matter if the Grisha were the ones rulling over Ravka and viewing otkazat’sya as lesser, and in that context, Alina being the Sun Summoner would be a very obvious road to her becoming corrupted. 

Frodo refusing to carry the One Ring and asking other people to take that burden from him comes from a place of genuine fear of what the Ring might do to him. In his place, we’d probably all do the same thing. That’s what makes his acceptance of his task all the more admirable. Alina, on the other hand, refuses to be the Sun Summoner and to help her fellow Grisha because that stands in the way of her ending up with Mal. She never gives any sign that she’s truly empathizing with the Grisha’s plight, she tries to run away not once, but twice, and most importantly, she never sees herself as one of them. They are othered, but it matters little to her, because she doesn’t want to be othered herself, because that stands in the way of her running off with a boy. It’s basically the equivalent of Frodo being overcome by fear after seeing the fate of the Shire in Galadriel’s mirror, and just demanding to be sent to the Grey Havens straight away to save his own ass from it all and just leaving the One Ring to whoever wants to deal with it. At that point, it’s not being a Reluctant Hero: it’s being a coward at best, a selfish bastard at worst. 

(And that’s why I don’t really buy her when she tells Aleksander that they could have had it all if he had told her all the truth from the start, because... again, she didn’t seem to care about the Grisha that much and Aleks telling her everything would have actually been a sure way of having her run as fast as possible the other way. I know the story is trying to tell me otherwise and that the plot point I’m supposed to see here is that Alina was willing to do something until she felt betrayed by Aleks, which is... not what was shown here, and it’s especially annoying considering how Alina is a deserter in every sense of the word, and that any army would have court-martialed her for running away.) 

So if Alina is meant to be a pure, selfless heroine, who loses her powers because she also refuses to be greedy... that just falls completely flat, because if anything, she’s as selfish as Frodo is selfless, because all of this really just boils down to her wanting to run off with Mal. 

Now, onto Sam and Mal. Both of them are basically Everymen who are there to help the Hero and keep their feet on the ground. As mentioned earlier, Sam is the one who helps Frodo finish his mission to Mordor, and the story makes it clear Frodo would have failed without him. TGT meanwhile presents Mal as Alina’s “True North”... which could work on paper as Alina’s reminder to temper Aleksander’s efforts and to remind him that in order for Grisha to be viewed as people, it is important for them to also remember that balance and peace between Grisha and otkazat’sya will be essential, so resentment and hatred can be healed between both groups. 

The key difference here is that Sam is completely supportive of Frodo at all times. Even when Frodo sends him away in the film, Sam goes back after him the minute he realizes he’s been tricked by Gollum. He never shames Frodo whenever he falls prey to temptation, he simply reminds him of who he is and what he must fight for, and even when he’s climbing Mount Doom, he still carries Frodo on his back despite being probably completely exhausted, because Frodo’s more exhausted than he is. He completely accepts Frodo as both his friend, the Hobbit from the Shire, and the Ring-bearer he needs to help, even if he might die in the process. 

Mal (in the books, that is) makes it very clear that he does not accept Alina as both the girl he knew and the Sun Summoner. He only wants the girl, and whenever Alina makes steps towards being the Sun Summoner, he basically sulks and yells at her for not paying attention to him. Despite Alina becoming othered in the eyes of the world, he refuses to see her as othered, mostly because it is inconvenient to him rather than because he loves her for who she is. That’s why in the end, people feel like Alina lost her powers in order to be with Mal, because Mal would never accept her in her entirety. Sam, on the other hand, accepts Frodo as both Ring-bearer and Hobbit, because if he didn’t, Frodo would have failed. 

And while they made Mal in the show a lot nicer than his book counterpart, he still doesn’t work as Alina’s “True North”, because he cossets her in her selfishness. He may say he doesn’t care about how Alina is a Grisha in this one, but he also doesn’t consider the implications of it all - which is especially glaring given he’s a soldier himself. Like, look, if you’re going to slap in a racism plotline to make Mal/ina work, you’d think that being half-Shu would give Mal a little awareness that people are going to treat Alina badly for being half-Shu AND a Grisha, and given Alina is the MOTHERFUCKING SUN SUMMONER AND A SAINT, maybe, just maybe he’d tell her: “Heh, it’s kinda lame we’ll just run off and let everyone else in the dust, you know, especially since we could make our lives as well as everyone else’s better?” Seriously, if you’re going to make Mal Alina’s “True North”, have him face her duties and her calling whether she likes it or not, don’t coddle her when she wants to run the other way because she wants to hide under a rock for the rest of her life. 

With all that being said, that leaves us with the Darkling, who... I mean, given his whole schtick is that power corrupts and makes you evil and crazy, I guess that makes him Gollum, but sexy.

That single expression has been haunting me ever since I started writing the above novel and I fucking hate it. You’re welcome. No one wanted Sexy Gollum. Absolutely no one. Fuck this shyte. See, this is why I want Darkling Redemption. I do not want to live in a world where Gollum is sexy. I need brain bleach. 

Even here it doesn’t even fucking work because Gollum hid in a cave with the Ring with a strategically placed cloth because no one wants to see his crusty ass family jewels anyway, while Aleks worked his ass off to give the Grisha a safe place to live and to at the very least ensure they’re useful enough to not be killed like animals. Like, if you’re going to give the world something that’s gonna definitely not make me sleep tonight like Sexy Gollum, at least do it right.

✨ Mikasa and Armin were the only people who could calm him down

✨ You know that one kid who gets sent outta the classroom every week? And like teachers always call said kid's parents for a meeting? Eren is that kid

✨ At first, a very disappointed Grisha went to the meetings, and then neither parent went cuz they were too busy, and then Carla always went. By "too busy" I mean having yelling matches and digging up old bones and then storming off like toddlers. That was the hardest part of Eren's life

✨ A lot of Eren's rage came from his parent's crumbling marriage and he missed his dad but MY GOD he was relieved when Grisha left them. Eren has a soft spot deep down for him, but he's gonna break a damn wall if he sees Grisha again, and near his mom

✨ Eren's behavior improves at the start of middle school though. He's still not to be fucked with and lowkey terrifies the teachers, but he's much more amiable

One of the best things about being Ronald Weasley’s best friend was the chance to spend summers at the Burrow. In your opinion, there was no more beautiful sunset than the one you, Harry, Ron and Hermione would watch from the top of the hill.

When you stayed at the Burrow, nothing could bother you. Not even Fred and George’s pranks, nor Percy complaining you all were too loud. Not even having to help Mrs Weasley out was a problem.

Last week, before you came to stay with Ron, you and your mom got into a big fight. She had got herself in a deal that you could not forgive her for. Your mom was now the newest Death Eater in town, and you could not believe she would side with the Dark Lord.

It wasn’t like you hated your own house.

Well, perhaps you weren’t very fond of your mother — that was one of the reasons you were “hiding” at the Weasleys.

But she did, and so that meant that your house was no longer your home. You couldn’t stay one more day there, living with such a dark witch, so you asked Ron if you could crash there for the rest of the summer. You didn’t tell him why, though.

Somehow the Weasley’s place was your only home left. Deep down, you knew why, but you didn’t want to admit — it wasn’t just the Burrow that made you feel like home. It was Ron.

“I think you kids should go to bed,” Mrs Weasley said, speaking in that way that only she knew how. It could sound like a suggesting for inattentive ears, but the truth was it was a command.

The boys complained, slowly getting out of the couch, scared of what their mom could do to them. Hermione looked at you with a tired smile, and without a good-bye, she and Ginny headed to the room you three were sharing.

You careless delayed your leaving, too scared to let go of Ron. Sure, it was not the first time he was laying on you tummy, but, every time he left, it felt like he wouldn’t come back.

He finally got up, stretching his arms up and fixing his jumper, letting you take a quick glimpse of the abdomen. He is taking his Quidditch practice way too serious, you thought, analysing marks that weren’t there before.

Ron looked back at you, still laying on the couch and offered you a hand you gladly accepted.

You two walked up the stairs, side by side, which was quite hard, but neither wanted to say good-night yet.

Ron stared at Ginny’s door room, which was closed. You followed his glance, breathing hard. Fred and George passed you two, and for the first time that week, they didn’t comment on it.

“Well, good night, y/N,” Ron said, pressing his lips together.

You stared from the door to him, scared to say something you would regret.

“Can I...” you swallowed hard, moaning already but Ron eagerly waited for you to finish your sentence, “...sleep with you tonight? I promise not to make a sound.”

Ron quickly smiled, and he had to tell himself to stop being so happy. It was a habit of you two to sleep in the same bed since you were eleven, so he had to remind himself that for you that probably was just a simple request.

But, by Merlin, for Ron, your request was practically his salvation.

“Sure, follow me before mum catches us,” he said, and you giggled, immediately reaching for his hand. When you touched, both felt something like an electric shock running through each nerve ending, dissipating heat throughout their bodies.

Harry was already there, and upon seeing his two best friends walking in and holding hands, he smiled before hiding himself under the covers.

Harry knew that you two fancied each other and he thought it was pretty stupid that none of you had the balls to confess it. But he wasn’t gonna be the one to ruin the moment.

Since you two were in your pyjamas already, there was not much more to do then to get under the covers yourselves and sleep. But who could warn your heart to slow its beats? It felt like you were in a bloody party!

Ron wasn’t doing much better either, squeezing himself in his bed so it could fit both of you. It was supposedly a single bed, only larger — a magic trick that the twins cast that went wrong, but for Ron, the spell had gone very very well.

“Hm, y/N?” Ron whispered in the darkness.

“Yes?” you were wondering if he could hear your heartbeat.

“Can I hug you with an arm? I’m too close to the edge,” he muttered.

You smiled in the dark, happy that he wouldn’t be able to see how much glad you were that he was about to squeeze you in his chest. His hot, callused hands found your waist with such delicacy that you never imagined Ron would have.

In a second, your face was on his chest, and you could feel his heartbeat as fast as yours. But both were slowly coming to a less quick rhythm.

“Sleep well,” you whispered to him, moving your head slightly just so your voice could find his ears better.

“I will,” he whispered a minute later, hoping that you would be too sleepy to remember.

Your last memory before giving in to the dream was Ron running his fingers through your scalp, and all you could think was how nice it was.

“Shhh, y/N, it’s okay!” Ron kinda whispered-shouted in your ear, holding your arms. “Please, wake up, you’re safe!”

You could feel his hands grasping your arms, but you couldn’t manage to open your eyes.

“It’s okay, I’ve got you,” he whispered again, kissing your forehead.

It was finally then when you woke up — scared, confused, sweaty.

Ron saw your eyes spark in the dark and he hugged you, placing a hand in your scalp and bringing you close to your chest.

“You scared me,” he said.

“What-what happened?”

“You had a bad dream, I guess. I woke up to you screaming ‘mum, it’s me, please don’t hurt me’ or something like that,” he informed, pulling you away to see your face. “Crazy nightmare, huh? Scared of your own mother,” his tone suggested he could be siling, but in the dim, you just couldn’t tell.

Ron noticed how quiet you were after his comment.

“y/N? Are you and your mom okay?” he asked, placing a hand in your cheek at the exact same time a tear fell from your eyes and wetted his hand. “What is it, princess? You can tell me.”

You tried to fight the tears, and Ron helped, trying to clean them up.

“My mum and I... the reason I came here without days’ notice—”

“—you never need to give a notice,” he interrupted.

“— is because my mum told me what she had done,” you kept going, scared that if you stopped whispering, you would give up. “She’s with the Death Eaters, Ron. She’s one of them now.”

Ron tried hard to keep himself together for you and not to scream because of Harry. “She what?”

“She said she wanted to protect our family, going to the winner side,” you kept telling. “Winner side, can you believe that? That woman is bloody stupid.”

He revived when you came in, a couple of days ago, with a big smile in your face, no sign of sadness. How you hugged him — yes, this time a bit longer, but he thought he was imagining it.

Ron didn’t know what to say.

Really, what do you say to someone who had a death eater for a mom? If Molly told Ron she was a Death Eater, what would he do? He had no idea, but he would be probably way more freaked out than you.

The fact that you were having just some nightmares about the whole thing and not running around, cursing everyone, only made Ron realise how much special and strong and brave the girl he was in love with was.

By Merlin, did he have to realise it now?

“It’s gonna be okay, y/N,” he said, not sure if it was the right thing to say, but pulling you close anyway. “We’re gonna find a way to save her. Talk some sense into her.”

“She has the mark, Ronnie. She showed it to me,” you sighed, hugging him tighter. You needed it — you would, and you have always needed it, but now you had an excuse for it.

“Doesn’t matter, princess. She’s gonna realise the mistake she’s made, and she’ll come around, and the Order will help protect her,” he whispered, running his fingers through her hair. “And if she doesn’t come to her senses... we’re not gonna hurt her, I promise. I’ll make sure of it.”

You faced up, meeting his sparkling eyes in the dark.

“But, Ronnie, what if she hurts me?” your question was barely audible, you were scared to even say something like that.

“She won’t. I won’t let her,” Ron muttered, kissing your forehead. “She’ll have to kill me first.”

Still looking into his eyes, you finally smiled. Not happy, but hopeful. You had Ron, and he was all you ever needed. He was your home, your best friend.

“I love you, Ronnie,” you whispered in a quick moment of bravery. You were not worried he wouldn’t feel the same, you weren’t worried if you were dumb to say such a thing.

But, as your home, he had the right to know. If it came to you, you could spend whole days telling him how much you loved him.

His eyebrows shot up, surprised at what he had heard. Somehow, Ron knew that you meant that you loved him as a woman loves a man, not as simple friends. He knew because of your hearts beating in the same rhythm, the exchanged looks causing goosebumps and colouring the cheeks, and the touches leaving trails on the body.

“I love you too, princess,” he whispered back, and all your worries suddenly disappeared.

Ron was in a sudden peace. He knew you weren’t going anywhere. You were his and he was home too.

Has a plush toy from his childhood; but he hides it everytime before he leaves his room

Has tea set cabinet, sometimes uses them but most of it serves a purpose of aesthetics only, he does not let anyone touch it

Arranges his books alphabetically and size wise

Has the queen’s rules on his wall, helps him remember them more vividly

Bed sheets stretched out everyday, he’s that person who irons bed sheets after theyre washed

Has a corner for Cheka’s toys

Bedroom extra messy whenever his nephew visits, Ruggie cleans it for him cause he can’t stand the site of it

Shows:

1. Tangled: The Series/Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure -- actually a fantastic show like, seriously. You need to watch Tangled: Before Ever After (a fairly short movie that sets up the plot) beforehand, but it's all on Disney+ and season 3 of the show will be out in a few days

2. Numb3rs -- a really good show if you like crime dramas. A math professor/genius works with his brother in the FBI to solve crimes using math, it's super cool. I think it's on Amazon Prime, but I could be wrong

3. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel -- truly an iconic show. It's funny, it's got Zachary Levi, it's on Amazon Prime

4. Good Omens -- I don't really think I need to explain this one to anybody who follows me. One of my absolute favourites, on Amazon Prime

5. Galavant -- a kind of ridiculous, not at all serious, very self-aware musical show. Great music, pretty good plot, good humour. On Netflix

Books:

1. The Montague Siblings // The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue and The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy -- representation!! So much representation in a historical fantasy setting. I cannot recommend this series enough, please read it -- by Mackenzie Lee

2. The Grishaverse // The Grisha Trilogy, Six of Crows duology, King of Scars duology, and The Language of Thorns -- yes, there are a lot of books, and yes TGT isn't the greatest, but this universe is so amazing and also the Netflix show will be dropping season one maybe kinda soon-ish -- by Leigh Bardugo

3. The Lunar Chronicles // Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Winter, Fairest, and Stars Above -- sci-fi, strong and diverse female leads, fairytale retellings, adorable romances, honestly it's my comfort series -- by Marissa Meyer

4. The Bloody Jack series -- it's a twelve book series, but good lord is it worth the commitment. Early 19th century, piracy, badass girl ends up in basically every major world event, it's just so good hdjdksnzhsjsk -- by L.A. Meyer

5. Literally anything by Neil Gaiman -- he's a really good writer, you guys

Movies:

1. The Princess Bride -- I mean, if you haven't seen this one, I don't know what you've been doing with your life. Iconic

2. Stardust -- based on a Neil Gaiman book, the score is glorious. Fantasy, adventure, idk I really like it, it's got a pretty fun story

3. Kubo and the Two Strings -- this movie's just like, really good. It made me cry. Also, it's made by the same studio that made Coraline

4. The Lord of the Rings trilogy -- look, I dunno what you want me to say, these movies are iconic (also you should definitely read the books)

5. The Emperor's New Groove -- this is one of the best Disney movies ever made and I've come across a surprising number of people who haven't seen it. Iconic characters, iconic design, iconic dialogue

YouTubers:

1. Overly Sarcastic Productions -- literature and history videos. Absolutely wonderful, I have no words for how much I love Red and Blue. Please go enjoy salty commentary on classic literature and the absolute meme-ness of history (also, Red's webcomic Aurora is so freaking good, I have teared up over it)

2. Thomas Sanders -- wholesome, amazing, incredibly talented. I would kill to protect this man. Sanders Sides has no right being that good, but it is and I love it

3. JK Studios -- the og cast of Studio C, doing their own thing now. Mainly just there for the cast being themselves idk

4. Translator Fails / Malinda -- she's just pretty cool, idk

5. The Brooklyn 99 YouTube channel -- clips and compilations from the show, what more could you want??

Songs:

1. First Burn -- this song cured my depression for like a week when it came out. Eliza roasting Alex for three straight minutes. Five Elizas (one of whom I saw!) Best when imagined occurring immediately after Congratulations

2. Don't Make Me by Malinda -- really catchy, Thomas Sanders was in the music video, 10/10

3. Literally all the songs from Frozen 2 -- all of the songs are bops, but All is Found is tragically underrated and nobody's talking about how When I Am Older is the biggest goddamn mood

4. LEMONS by Brye -- powerful, iconic, it started on TikTok but damn is it a bop

5. In the Reptile Room by The Gothic Archies -- honestly, listen to this whole album bc all the songs are bops and they were written for the A Series of Unfortunate Events audiobooks. This one is probably my favourite one though

been back for a while and some things already happened. on the plane from jfk to amsterdam i watched battle of the sexes, which was worth watching, the princess bride again, childhood classic (although i caught a couple more jokes this time like ‘keep your jo der’) and notting hill again, twice. i will never not be in love with that movie. made it to the uk in the morning even though i missed the connecting flight in amsterdam due to a delay in the jfk take-off. turned into another “crying in the rebooking line” episode. i have never felt more miserable in my life. i didn’t even want to write here because i knew it would be too depressing to read lmao. i texted L instead and let her know all my woes. she comforted me loads. i finally got on a flight 3 hours later and fell asleep intermittently throughout the journey. dave picked me up in birmingham, we drove back, straight to the ph MP announced me everyone cheered i almost cried there was an aww then we sang 3 songs, thank god i made the blessing i felt ok for the first time in 3 days had done no work though ofc then went to st austin’s w no fuckin luggage didn’t get changed for the party at BCDR there were lights and 80s music and ice cream then i somehow found it in me to dance w A and Z then i slept like a baby w Z after chillin w her and A and listening to new music tgt rex orange county melodrama by lorde and some old stuff by troye sivan that Z had never heard while A was on facetime w her bf next day went to house found clothes thank god ran a shit ton of errands too early, explain waterstones AGAIN including brett easton ellis, what a shitshow then Z got there, had lunch w her and A and then B and K walked into costa i hugged B and she was totally listless but friendly, not sure if she still even cares abt me but i appear to be pretty unhurt abt the situation because apparently the only thing that keeps me going in this world is L  then L arrived and i was so happy to see her and J, we had dinner and J gave us loads of gifts including the food then i couldn’t do anything except unpack, did no work and was worrying about the next day because i had philosophy and english and theatre and i’m fucked for everything then i meant to go to bed but i couldn’t stop crying for some fucking reason so i went to visit L and lay in bed w her for ages and then felt better and went to sleep in my own room today was actually ok, my books arrived! so after skl i went to town w L, already dark, i wore a turtleneck white jumper, he wasn’t there but my jazz singer was! gave him some coins and he smiled at me and said happy new year and he seemed to recognize me, wanna build up the courage to ask him if he has a cd or if he performs anywhere before i leave and now i have loads to do but not that much time bc i procrastinated loads.
