It's very easy to misurestand H:SR Kaeya's past, expecially if somebody happens to stumble into the only existent picture of him that exists in tangible form, without the Enigmata powers distorting it:

It's some sort of mugshot. The background is a blinding white, which makes his lack of shadow behind him stand out. He's wearing a light blue hospital gown with cobalt waves loose down his shoulders.

His expression is empty. He looks haunted, mismatched eyes clearly in view and devoid of the curious shine that characterizes him nowadays. Even in the form of paper, it looks like he's staring right back at whoever found the photo and is scrutizining this tired, young man.

If one was to find this particular photo of him, they could misconstruct Kaeya as an escaped facility experiment. He's certaintly okay with it- the more confusing elements in his story, the better.
