Here is a bit of queer tv for y'all. This is from the new Netflix show 'Away' staring Hillary Swank as the commander of the first human mission to Mars of which Lu is the astronaut chosen to represent China. She has a secret, namely she is in love with Mei, the CAPCOM for the mission but the secret doesn't stay that way. While this storyline plays out predominantly in the 3rd episode of the 10 part season, it is referenced throughout the show. What I particularly liked about this storyline is that, in spite of it being a US show, it represents the experience of queerness from the point of view of the Chinese culture, which I don't often get to see (and, without knowing this culture particularly well felt like it treated it with sensitivity). The performance by Vivian Wu is subtle and moving and it it's basically a lesbian in space so ... Yeah, it's great. Elise and Eryka - A Love Story

Elise and Eryka are LGBT interest  /  lesbian interest characters in the UK TV series The Tunnel Sabotage S2 (2016) starring Clémence Poésy as Elise and Laura de Boer as Eryka. 

Elise, a commander with the French police is investigating a plane crash. Eryka is the only passenger who failed to board the flight. Despite being under suspicion Elise forms a connection with Eryka who has also experienced the loss of a twin at an early age.

So I was a bit thrown off when I herd about this new show, but then I read the article and I was like....OKAY IM WATCHING THIS SHOW.

I watched Ratched. I was a bit dubious about it because, as beautifully stylistic it looked and as much as two talented queer actresses playing queer characters enticed me, the somewhat stepford-wife creepy vibe the trailer gave off gave me pause. I'm not much for horror or gore. But the gifs on tumblr, my insatiable desire for queer content and the fact it is on Netflix overcame my doubts and boy am I glad. It was so good. The show does need a trigger warning though because I wasn't wrong about the quite graphic gore. The show is well written, well paced and was ideal to inducing a couple of binge sessions (honestly why did I start this at 10pm on a school night?) to get through the 8 episodes of this season. Mildred Ratched, the titular character (Sarah Paulson), is an uncanny woman that I didn't know what to make of for the first while given she enveigles her way into a job at a mental institute to get close to her murderous brother. The question in my mind was how far would she go in pursuit of saving him? I warmed to Ratched whose blossoming relationship with Gwendolyn (Cynthia Nixon) helped to unveil her vulnerabilities. This relationship felt intrinsic to Ratched opening up and growing as a character. It makes up the core romantic story for the season and because Ratched is the main character, it makes this a very gay show for which I am grateful. Rachel and Sid Lesbian UK TV Couple

One of the more popular couples on my YouTube channel has been the love story between Rachel and Sid.  Set in the midst of WWII Sid drives an ambulance in London while Rachel lives at home in the country with her extended family. 

Over the course of the story Rachel and Sid become lovers but Rachel can’t quite commit to Sid as she is conflicted about not being around to help her family. Great UK period drama that sadly only ran for one season so we never get a proper conclusion to the Rachel and Sid story.

Miranda and Chloe Lesbian Interest Storyline

I have just begun uploading a lesbian interest series on my YouTube channel featuring the love story between Miranda and Chloe from the Secret Life of Us. This is a well-loved TV series in Australia and New Zealand but is not widely known outside these countries.

The Secret Life of Us was a groundbreaking TV show back in its day for all sorts of reasons: good storylines, interesting characters and set in St Kilda, Melbourne. 

TSLOFUS series was one of the first Australian TV shows not to have all the usual tropes that we often see in lgbtq+ storylines. The show gave gay characters storylines other than just being gay. In the first three seasons there are a number of gay male characters. Miranda and Chloe feature in Season 3 of the show. What was great to see was that Miranda’s friends simply accept that Miranda is with a woman without any commentary or discussion about suddenly being gay even though she had previously dated men.

Miranda and Chloe fall for each other over time and the whole relationship appears to be an outgrowth of liking each other and spending time. Apart from some early interest in Chloe in the first episode from Miranda’s flatmate which she soon puts the kibosh on there is no annoying triangulation to detract from their sweet love story.
