John Price had been on a mission for what felt like an eternity. Even though it had only been a few weeks, it felt like months to Y/N. She tried to keep busy while he was gone, but found herself constantly checking her phone for updates or any sign of him.
Finally, the day arrived when John was supposed to return home. Y/N woke up early and went through her usual routine, but felt like she was moving in slow motion. She was so anxious to see him again, to be held in his arms and feel the warmth of his embrace.
As the hours ticked by, Y/N busied herself with cleaning and cooking, anything to keep busy until John arrived. Soon enough, she heard the sound of his car pulling into the driveway, and she rushed to the door to greet him.
John looked exhausted, but he still managed to crack a small smile when he saw Y/N waiting for him. They hugged each other tightly, and Y/N felt like she could finally breathe again now that he was home.
They spent the next few hours catching up and talking about the mission. Y/N listened intently as John recounted the details, but all she really wanted to do was snuggle up with him and forget about the outside world.
Eventually, John could see the exhaustion on Y/N's face. She had barely slept the night before, too excited to know that he was coming home soon. John knew that what they both needed was some quiet time together, so he suggested they go to bed early.
They changed into their pajamas and crawled into bed, Y/N's head resting on John's chest. The silence was comfortable, but Y/N couldn't help but feel the tears start to well up in her eyes.
"I missed you so much," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
John hugged her tightly, rubbing her back gently as she cried. He knew how hard it was for her while he was gone, but he still couldn't help but feel guilty he had to put her through it.
"I'm here now," he said, his voice low and calming. "I'm not going anywhere."
Y/N sniffled and hugged him tighter. "I know, I just...I can't help but worry about you when you're gone. It's like a piece of me is missing."
John rubbed her back soothingly, his fingers tracing patterns on her skin. As he reached her shoulders, Y/N let out a small giggle.
"What's so funny?" John asked with a small smile.
"My back is ticklish," Y/N admitted, blushing slightly.
John chuckled and continued rubbing her back, this time with a more playful touch. He found that he enjoyed watching Y/N squirm and giggle every time his fingers made contact with her skin.
"Hey!" Y/N laughed, wiggling away from him. "Stop it!"
John only tickled her more, enjoying the sound of her laughter filling the room. He continued until Y/N was gasping for air, too weak to fight him off anymore. Finally, he relented, resting his hand on her back and rubbing it softly.
"Feeling better?" he asked, his voice low and tender.
Y/N nodded, still trying to catch her breath. "Yeah, thank you. That was...kind of fun, actually."
John grinned, feeling a sense of relief and joy wash over him. It was good to see Y/N happy and playful again, even if it meant tickling her to get there.
For the rest of the night, they cuddled and talked, their conversation laced with laughter and affection. John felt like he was home at last, and that as long as Y/N was by his side, he could face any mission that came his way.

Treasure Planet - ler!Silver, lee!Jim
¸¸♬·¯·♩¸¸♪·¯·♫¸¸¸¸♫·¯·♪¸¸♩·¯·♬¸¸
John Silver took great pride in being smooth, an absolutely necessary character trait in his position of Legendary Pirate Who Almost Stole The Greatest Treasure To Ever Exist. He wasnʼt easily flustered, provoked, or thrown off balance (figuratively, in reality his leg was a true nuisance when it came to keeping balance), and he barely ever lost his cool.
Until he let Jim Hawkins into his life, that was. The boy had the very special talent of making even his closest friends very angry and his newest method of nuisance-ing was slightly bothersome at best and downright infuriating at worst.
“Nah.”
Silver whipped around to the boy so fast he almost fell over, his apron majestically waving after him and the sponge in his hand splattering water on the wall. “Whaddaya mean, nah?! These dishes donʼt do themselves!”
“Nah.”
“Donʼt you dare say that word again!”
Jim shrugged, an ever so slight grin tugging at the corners of his mouth. Little rat. “I mean, yeah, me neither though.”
“Jimothy Hawkins, this is my kitchen and I demand you-”
“Nah, itʼs my motherʼs.” Silver felt his eyelid twitch, but he kept his mouth shut - no disrespect to Mrs. Hawkins whatsoever was tolerated in this kitchen, no matter whose kitchen it was. Jim smirked. “If you really think about it, youʼre kinda in my kitchen.”
It definitely wasnʼt Jimʼs though. Silver let out a low growl. “Your last chance, scrub. Start doing the dishes now and I might consider not making a pastry out of you.”
They stared at each other for a few seconds, the old pirate trying to look as intimidating as possible and the young engineer weighing the pros and cons of giving in. Then the corners of his mouth twitched upwards. “Nah.”
Having anticipated the answer, Silver lunged forward immediately, but the reflexes of a sprout like Jim even outdid the speed of a skilled fighter, especially those of a skilled fighter whose glory days were long over. Ah yes, youth, the price for experience. Luckily, though the former might give you the momentum every once in a while, the latter always won in the end.
“AH- how did you- ehehey, stahahap!”
“Practice, lad.” Silver grinned and pulled both of Jimʼs wrists up to hold them in place with his robot arm. “I know a half-assed dash to the door when I see one.”
The boy let out a high-pitched string of giggles when a set of fingers wiggled into his ribs. “Ayehehehe! Sihihihilveheheher!”
“Yes, Jimbo?” The old pirate drilled his fingers into his victimʼs side with a smirk, making him shriek. “Care to do the dishes now?”
“Nah- no, nonono, wait, wahahahaiiit!”
“Was that a squeal I heard?”
Jim was too busy thrashing around in his grip and trying to protect his stomach to notice the fond twinkle in Silverʼs eye - and even if he noticed, he probably couldnʼt get a word in about it if he tried, too busy laughing and squealing.
“NAHAHAHAHA!”
“Yehehes,” Silver mocked. “And if you know whatʼs good for you, youʼll stop saying that word. ʼNahʼ, I canʼt even stand the sound of it. That squeal of yours on the other hand…” He chuckled softly when another one of said squeals echoed through the room. “I must say I rather like the sound of that.”

Tickletober Day 2: Accidental
Fandom: Lost in Space (2018)
Lee!Will, Ler!Penny and Robot(?)
Summary: While preparing for the first Halloween party at Alpha Centaury, Penny is reminded of Will's biggest weakness.
><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Will was holding onto a small ledge in the wall, hanging by one hand, the other holding a homemade, sparkly, orange and purple streamer, refusing Robot's help while Penny smiled evilly from below. How did he get into this situation?
It all started with Penny banging on his ship's door.
"Will get up! We have no time for sleeping if we want to get this done!"
Will groaned as he sat up, Robot standing above him as usual.
"Are you regretting our decision to help her, too?" He asked his friend.
Robot tilted his head. "Help Penny Robinson. Promise." He stated, pointing at Will.
"Yeah, I know." Will smiled as he grabbed clothing to get ready.
Will and Robot had returned to Alpha Centaury for Penny's birthday. They brought a cool glowing rock that they discovered on a distant planet (it was safe in every way other than it being a rock). The small party of just family members had gone great. As they were laying around, Penny had jumped up saying that she wanted to throw a Halloween. She made everyone promise to help, even though no one was against the idea.
"C'mon Will! Robot got out here faster than you, slow poke!" Penny's shouting snapped Will out of his reminiscing with only one boot on. He did notice that robot was not present in the ship anymore.
"I'm here." He yawned as the door opened, letting the light of the early morning suns to wash over him, along with the impatient glare from Penny, who was tapping her foot in disappointment.
"Dude!" She grabbed his hand and started dragging him away from his house. "You wasted ten whole minutes lollygagging! We only have so long before people notice!" She shoved a box of colorful stuff in his arms. "Take these and follow me!" She then picked up her own box and briskly walked down the road.
Will rolled his eyes and followed along. "She probably took way longer to get out of her bed." He muttered, glancing to Robot.
Robot gave him the equivalent of a "shush" face as he dragged a cart full of barrels, pumpkins, and paint. He then did the equivalent of a friendly shoulder bump, which, of course, sent will stumbling away from the force. Let her be.
"Ok, ok. I'll stop complaining about the really early morning on my week off." Will chuckled, bumping him back. "Now lets catch up!"
The decorations and preparations had gone good thus far, with tables properly decorated, barrels for apple bobbing set up (why did penny need those??), the carving corner had the paper mat and trashcan along with the carving tools.
When Will had asked as they hung bats and ghosts on the ceiling with a tall ladder, why the others weren't here. Apparently, John had helped make the decorations the other night, Grant had helped her get permission to use the large meeting room and had haggled with the pumpkin farmers for cheeper prices. Maureen was currently distracting anyone awake at this ungodly hour while Judy made the baked treats. Don was making the candy with some chocolate (where did it come from? best not to ask). Debbie was doing chicken stuff.
Currently, Will was putting up the last of the decorations.
"Just don't look down!" Penny called from below. Will rolled his eyes as he balanced precariously on a ledge.
He taped the long streamer to the ceiling and shimmied a few feet further to tape it again. This was a quicker process than climbing down the ladder, moving it, then climbing up again for each taping of the streamer. Was it safe? No. Did the adventuress teens care? No. However, Robot did, which was why he was repeating "No, Will Robinson. Down." as he followed with his arms up to catch him if he fell. Penny was just following along, calling out "useful" advice.
"How would I look down?" Will called down, "my chin is plastered to the wall."
"I dunno, just don't!"
"No, Will Robinson. Down."
"I know bud," Will replied, "I just need to tape the end to this corner, than I will come down."
"I shall retrieve the ladder!" Penny anounced, walking to the corner Will was heading to and picking up the ladder. Or attempted to. She somehow knocked it over instead.
The loud CLANG startled Will, causing him to slip and fall.
Cold, Metal hands caught him around the waist, squeezing tight.
Will threw his hands over his mouth, hoping to hide his reaction, but was too late.
The high pitched yelp that echoed around the room caused Penny's rushing apologies to stop.
Will felt his face heat up as he looked down at Robot, who had loosened his hold. His head was tilted in question. Did I hurt you?
"Don't worry, big guy." Penny sauntered over, a grin taking over her face. "He's ok. Just a little ticklish, right Will?"
Will felt his blush move to his ears as he nodded. He could take the embarrassment if it let his friend know he didn't cause any harm.
There was a pause filled by Penny's snickering at his misfortune, until...
"Tih KL Sh?" Robot looked to Penny, confused.
"You don't know what 'ticklish' is?" She asked. When Robot shook his head, she attempted to explain the odd quirk the human nerves contain.
Will took this time to wriggle out of his friends grip, which had loosened after his intense reaction earlier. He managed to squirm out and onto Robot's still outstretched arms, using them like a stool to hop and grab at the ledge. He knew that at any moment, Penny was going to-
"You know what?" Penny's voice was taking a teasy tone. "It would be easier to show you. Right Will?" Her and Robot turned their heads to face him just as he lept off Robot and managed to grasp the ledge firmly with one hand. The other accidentally grabbed the still hanging streamer instead.
"No Will Robinson!" Robot tried to grab his foot, but he swung it out of reach.
"No Robot!" He copied as he did a sad half pull-up. "I am staying up here! Away from the demon you have awakened!"
"Oh, C'mon Will!" Penny called up, grinning impishly, "You're the one who keeps saying we should teach him human things!"
"Down. Will Robinson!"
"Well, not this!" Another failed attempt to get up.
"It's not like you'll mind! You always used to ask me to ti-"
"Shuhush!" Will accidentally let a few flustered giggles escape. This whole situation was honestly just silly.
"Help Will Robinson. Penny Robinson!" Penny looked to Robot, who was holding his arms out.
"Oh!" Her grin widened. "Let's do this!"
Will was attempting his newest pull-up when he saw a movement out of the corner of his eye. His flustered giggles turned into anticipatory ones when he saw Robot lifting Penny up like Simba, right towards him.
"Noho!" He started thrying to get purchase with his feet, but it was all for not. "Nohoho, Peehehehnnyhuhheee! DohohoHOHNHHPFFT-AAHAHA!"
He couldn't hold back the high-pitched cackles when Penny wrapped her arms around his waist and dug into his ribs.
The rough tickling without any build-up immediately made his arms shoot down and claw at the offending arms.
Robot was happy to be able to gently put the siblings down as his friend laughed and laughed in his sister's arms. Humans are silly. He watched as Will slid out of the girls grip and flopped onto the floor, his face bright red and giggling hysterically.
"Puhuhu-Pehehennyhyhee wahahaihihiHIHIHETAAHahAHAhahaA!!!"His cackling returned when Penny pounced onto him and clawed at his stomach.
"No waiting! We must educate you bulky friend how 'tickle' works!" Penny anounced. "Plus, it has been way too long since I did this!" Her hands shot up to his armpits, causing a loud shriek to escape his lungs."
Robot watched, fascinated, as his friend threw his head back, smiling wider than he had ever seen. Will's face and neck were bright red and his eyes were squeezed shut. He was kicking and bucking beneath his sister, but, Robot smiled (or did the sparkle-face equivalent), when he noticed that Will was definitely not fighting back with all his strength. It seemed Penny wasn't the only one missing their odd bonding thing.
"Now," Penny looked up at Robot, "If you wanted to so this, you would have to be veeeeryy gentle." Robot nodded. "Don't want to risk hurting someone with your tough and pointy hands." She smiled back down at her brother, who's laughter had now gone silent. "But looks like you won't het to tickle Will today." She stopped and scooted of the giggly armadillo that was her brother.
"Yohohohuhuhu suhuck!" He anounced once his giggle high left.
"Yeah, yeah," Penny stood up. "But you love me anyway." She held out her hand to help him get to his feet.
"Healthy Will Robinson?" Robot made sure.
"Yup." Will gave him two wobbly thumb ups.
"Great!" Penny clapped once. "Now let's finish getting this party ready!"

An Ode to Payphones
Tumblr media
“Mommy, what’s that?”       I looked. A child was glaring suspiciously at the payphone I’d been using moments before. He looked to be six or seven-years old, so it shouldn’t have been surprising that he’d never seen or noticed a public telephone before, but still. The question, and the palpable disgust in his voice, made me feel old.      “That’s a payphone, honey.”      “What’s it for?”      The mother cast an apprehensive look my way. We were on the platform at Spadina station and she’d seen me on the phone, plugging my ear against the shattering noise of a subway pulling in, making arrangements to meet my heroin dealer John at our usual spot at Main and Danforth. I would have to call him again when I got there, either from one of the four payphones inside Main Street station or on one of the two phones outside the church at Danforth. The phones inside Main Station must have all been routed through one line, because they either all worked, or none did.
Tumblr media
As for the two phones outside the church at Main and Danforth, typically one was broken, but they both worked when I went to check them for this article, a miracle perhaps attributable to the Second Coming of Christ on the roof.
Tumblr media
There have been long spells throughout my life as an addict during which I’ve had no mobile phone. Every spare cent went to heroin. The longest such spell was nearly a year. Several spanned three or four months. So it’s safe to say I know the payphones of Toronto as well as anybody else.      One of my old heroin dealers lived near Roncesvalles and Howard Park, where a non-Bell phone sat outside the Meridian Bank on the northeast corner, crooked and somehow wounded looking.
Tumblr media
There’s no trace of it now, but I know there used to be one just north, on the other side of the street where Dundas splits eastward from Roncesvalles. I used to use it all the time. Luckily, there’s another one not twenty steps east, a Bell, just outside the bus stop east of the Starbucks at Dundas and Roncesvalles. I’ve fed that phone a lot of Loonies, cursing its curious inability to recognize nickels or dimes.
Tumblr media
My Roncesvalles dealer was notoriously unreliable, so I often found myself having to take the College car all the way across the city to its eastern terminus at Main Station. While waiting on that corner for John I would commiserate with my fellow drug users, many of whom lacked phones themselves.      The most popular complaint I heard was how hard it was getting to find a public phone. Apparently some neighbourhoods in Toronto are payphone deserts. You can walk for twenty minutes in any direction and not find one.       So I’m going to see how many phones there are within a five minute radius of my apartment. My guess would be at least eight. Maybe ten. I’m about to get evicted, but I’ve lived in Kensington Market at Nassau and Bellevue since February 2017, which is a veritable payphone oasis. It’s too cold to go out tonight, so I’m going to take a virtual tour of my neighbourhood and take screenshots of every phone I find from Google Street View. Yes, the photos look pretty lo-fi but my whole life is lo-fi, so sue me.      Here’s a no-name one just north of Dundas on Bathurst:
Tumblr media
Here’s one just south of Oxford on Augusta:
Tumblr media
There are two Bell phones just outside Nirvana, across from Sneaky Dee’s:
Tumblr media
There’s one outside the church one block east of Bathurst at Lippincot and College:
Tumblr media
Here’s another no-name phone one block west of Spadina on the south side of College:
Tumblr media
And here’s a bank of payphones outside the internet cafe at Spadina and College:
Tumblr media
All three of the above phones never work at the same time, and some days you’re lucky to find one operational. (Incidentally, if someone ever reads this post a century from now, or maybe I mean a decade, or maybe I mean reads this post at all, I wonder how quaint the term “payphones outside the internet cafe” will seem.)      Here’s one more non-Bell phone, just to the west of the Scotiabank on the northwest corner of Dundas and Spadina. This phone has great personal significance for me, for a reason I can’t get into. Let’s just say I made a phone call on it during a very memorable moment in my life:
Tumblr media
For those of you not counting, that’s ten phones all within a five minute walk of my apartment in Kensington. There are another three are in the lobby of Toronto Western Hospital, for thirteen total. Thirteen is a lot more than I expected. Especially in 2020. And I’m sure I’m missing a few. Maybe payphones aren’t as endangered as they seem. In fact, as I was taking the photograph at the top of this post, a woman came over to me and asked, “are you using the phone?”     So they definitely still serve a purpose. They wouldn’t still be there if nobody was using them. A capitalist venture like Bell doesn’t keep phones around because the CEO is nostalgic. I’m kind of relieved at how many there still are, and how vital they still seem to be.       Still, I have mixed feelings toward payphones. They annoy me, but I also like them for reasons I can’t explain. I like invisible infrastructure. Nobody notices payphones. Ask yourself where the nearest payphone is. Do you even know? They may be forgotten or disliked, but they’re dependable, standing tall at their lonely outposts through sleet and rain, day and night, as we cuddle up with our smartphones in the warmth of our homes. We’ve left payphones out in the cold and most of us don’t even miss them.      I have a mobile phone now, but I still miss payphones. Or maybe I miss the days when they were a normal way to communicate, phone books slung around their waists, swinging on a chain. (Some time in the last decade, phone companies must have got tired of replacing the books nobody ever used and just got rid of them entirely. I guess they figured we could look up the numbers we need on...our mobile phones?)      Yes, there’s a definite note of nostalgia among people who still use payphones. We’re all bitter about the great price jump of 2007, when calls went from twenty-five cents to fifty, an increase of one-hundred percent. If you’re of my generation, old enough to remember life before the internet, then you know that payphones are sad remainders of the technology we grew up with, a visible reminder of the 90s. It’s my firm belief that everybody suffers from chronic temporal sickness for the decade they grew up in. I can imagine a day when they only exist in museums and photographs. Maybe I’ll go to watch the last phone get decommissioned. Maybe I’ll only love payphones once I can never use one again, like the Once-ler becoming an environmentalist only after hearing the “thwack” that felled the last Truffula tree in Dr. Suess’ The Lorax.      I feel this way even though payphones are often more a hassle than a convenience. I once spent half an hour outside the Eaton Centre on Queen Street waiting for a woman to finish her conversation, only to find the phone broken when she finally hung up. Her wild gesticulations should have tipped me off that she’d been screaming at a phantom, but I was too dopesick to notice.        There were and are other cons to payphone usage. It wasn’t always easy to come up with the necessary exact change. Or sometimes you’d have exact change but the phone wouldn’t recognize one of your coins. For whatever reason, payphones have a really hard time reading dimes. Many times I’ve had just enough to make one call but the phone won’t cooperate and I’ve had to throw myself at the mercy of a local convenience store owner or random bystander. Maybe “can I use your phone?” was an innocuous question back in the day, but nowadays people immediately suspect you for asking and they really, really do not want to loan you their phone. I don’t blame them. Our phones contain our entire lives. It’s not the same as handing someone a few quarters.       Despite all the long list of cons, there remains among my fellow payphone users a keen sense of loss. We’re all grieving something indefinable, something that went away with the advent of mobile phones. And I’m not leading up to a gripe about “kids these days on their phones.” As an avid reader, I usually bury my nose in a book when I’m on transit, so I don’t beseech people to “live in the moment” when they’re sitting on a bus. Being a passenger on the TTC for the thousandth time isn’t something that requires one’s undivided attention. I only get annoyed when I see some guy – and it’s always a guy – staggering down the sidewalk with his eyes glued to his phone, walking into people. Or walking into traffic. The feelings of wistfulness among payphone users grows more acute as the years roll on and more and more public telephones are yanked from their moorings, never to return. The sense of loss sometimes manifests itself in the passing down of legend.      When I first heard the story, it was that there exists somewhere in the city of Toronto a payphone that still makes calls for a quarter. I was convinced it was the one just east of University on Dundas, south side of the street, just east of the Royal Bank. It just looks so fucking furtive. Like it’s hiding from the tourist hordes at Yonge and Dundas square, tucked around that corner:
Tumblr media
I went to check that phone for this article but it doesn’t work at all, much less for half price.      In an apt game of telephone about telephones, the legend grew. Only a few months after I first heard the Legend of the Half-Price Payphone, the story had morphed into a unicorn payphone that makes calls for free. People were arguing over which one it could be, though admittedly nobody had ever found it. It was like the leprechaun’s pot of gold.      “It’s the one outside the mall at Kingston and Midland. The one with the Scotiabank!”      “Naw it’s the payphone at Warden Station! Next to the donut shop!”      “It’s the one at Yonge and Charles!”      “What? They took that one out before 9/11.”      “It’s the one in Yorkdale near the GO Station!”      “Seriously bro. Pre-9/11. You’re memory is fucked, bro.”      “My cousin’s in the Hell’s Angels. He can sell you a burner for $5. Why use a payphone when you can get a…”       “No one cares about your cousin, Dwight.”      “Pre-9/11 bro. Seriously. Yonge and Charles? Christ!”       And on and on and on, into the night.       I have a mobile phone now and it’s hard to imagine I’ll ever go back.       The final straw came when I had to go up to Muskoka one summer for four days to work on a cottage. I missed my partner so much by the third day that I walked up and down the length of the lake, looking for a payphone. I probably had a better chance of spotting a lion, but there was no way I was going back to that cottage without talking to my wife. I missed her too fucking much.       At the end of the lake I spotted a house with the garage door wide open. Inside the garage there was a workbench, a fridge, and all sorts of tools. On a hunch, I quietly made my way up the gravel driveway. There wasn’t a human being in sight. Inside the garage, I spotted a wall-mounted phone, and called my wife. She didn’t answer but I left her a message. As I was leaving it I heard footsteps and before I could make myself scarce an elderly lady came around the corner and stared at me. She obviously lived there.       “Um. I was just…leaving,” I said, hanging up the phone and sheepishly skipping back to the main road as fast as I could. The woman frowned after me, watching me go.       A little further down the road I saw an electrician working on a house and asked to use his phone. He said yes and I finally got through to my wife. But I couldn’t talk long or say what I wanted to say because the electrician was staring at me, so I determined right there and then to get and keep a fucking phone of my own. And that’s what I did. I sometimes pay my bill late and find myself cast backward into the land of payphones and useless dimes, but for the most part I’ve joined the 21st century.      As for that mother and her child, the mother did her best, to her credit.              “Some people…can’t afford cell phones,” she informed her son, who looked bored already. “Or else they can’t get coverage on the subway, so they use one of these. Or in emergencies, they work for emergencies.”       “What kind of person can’t afford a phone?” the child brayed incredulously.       The mother looked embarrassed. I wasn’t. Let her stupid kid hate payphones and poor people. Most people do.      I rarely use payphones now but I still get a small shiver of curiosity when I pass one I haven’t seen before, wondering if it’s the legendary free one. The unicorn. The white whale of public telephones. So I check. And I hear “please insert fifty cents” from the robotic lady voice that rules payphone land.      Then I move on.

Jorge Carrin picks five bookshops that globetrotting bibliophiles should put on their bucket list
Posted January 06, 2019 06:27:49 Last year, the oldest bookshop in Australia Launceston's Birchalls shut its doors after 170 years of operation. Bookstore chains, including mega chain Borders, have also folded in recent years. US online bookselling giant Amazon has recently set up warehouses in Australia, and the e-reader has long encroached on the paperback's territory. But through that tumult, the independent bricks-and-mortar bookshop lives on. This is lucky for Spanish writer, academic and literary critic Jorge Carrin, for whom the bookshop is "the perfect place to understand the world". "When you enter a bookshop you discover a kind of country a little world and you can find different aspects of the history of the world, and also of the present time."
Tumblr media
Photo: Jorge Carrin at Ler Devagar in Lisbon one of the bookstores featured in his book Livrarias (or Bookshops). (Horacio Villalobos/Corbis via Getty Images) For pleasure and for research, Carrin has travelled the world visiting bookshops and getting stamps in his bibliophile passport. The result is Bookshops an extended love letter to his favourite book stores, and a meditative essay on the cultural, intellectual and historical importance of bookshops. "I know the library is more democratic than the bookshop, but the bookshop is part of the city," Carrin argues. "It is a private space with a public service dimension to the community that is very important." Carrin has (at least) 50 bookshops that he holds dear, but for ABC Arts he has whittled this down to five for intrepid bibliophiles to put on their bucket list. No Australians made it into this final cut, but Carrin says Melbourne's Embiggen Books would make his top ten which would also include John Sandoe Books (London, UK), Librairie Ulysse (Paris, France), Librera Rafael Alberti (Madrid, Spain), and Robinson Crusoe 389 (Istanbul, Turkey). Eterna Cadencia (Buenos Aires, Argentina)

(Supplied: Facebook/Eterna Cadencia) While tourists flock to El Ateneo Grand Splendid across town (which is housed in a converted 19th-century-style theatre), Carrin says the Eterna Cadencia "is a better bookshop, and probably more beautiful". "[There's] wooden floors, stately armchairs and tables, excellent stock set out on shelving that covers the walls, a delightful cafe on a refurbished patio where all manner of literary events are held," Carrin writes in Bookshops. Ler Devagar (Lisbon, Portugal)

(Supplied: Facebook/Ler Devagar) "There's two kinds of bookshops," says Carrin: "The bookshops that have sofas and seats and invite you to read in the bookshop for free, and the bookshops where the reading is forbidden. But in both of them you can enter for free and you can feel safe and warm." Lisbon's Ler Devagar, which translates to "reading slowly", is that first kind of bookshop. It's a three-storey open space with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves around the perimeter and an antique printing press at the centre a nod to the building's origins. With a cafe and regular list of events and readings, it feels more like a community arts space than a purely commercial endeavour. City Lights (San Francisco, USA)

Photo: City Lights Books is one of the most famous bookshops in the USA. (Supplied: Flickr/Curtin Cronn) City Lights is the most famous bookshop in the US, and it's among a group of bookstores (including the Lello Bookstore in Porto, and Shakespeare and Company in Paris) that "have been transformed into museums of themselves and the fragment of cultural history that they represent," Carrin writes. So naturally, on his first trip to San Francisco, he went on a "devout pilgrimage" to this icon. Happily, bookseller and poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti has managed to maintain City Lights as a place "for tourists, real readers and for local customers" alike. The Book Lounge (Cape Town, South Africa)

Photo: The Book Lounge is invitingly named and furnished. (Supplied: The Book Lounge) Though many bookstores have become famous because of the writers that frequented their shelves and sofas, Carrin reminds us that "the reader is the main character of the bookshop". And the reader is invited to make themselves at home in this relatively new bookstore, which opened in Cape Town in 2007. "The Book Lounge is a charming bookshop with large wooden tables and sofas and a basement with rugs that makes you want to stay on and live there," Carrin writes. It has the soothingly familiar aesthetic of a traditional bookshop except for one thing: the bookshelves are punctuated by glaring gaps. The explanation? Works by JM Coetzee, Paulo Coelho and Gabriel Garcia Marquez were regularly being stolen, so they've been taken off the shelf and are now kept behind the counter. Librairie des Colonnes (Tangier, Morocco)
Tumblr media
Photo: Librairie des Colonnes is the oldest bookshop in Tangier. (Supplied: Flickr/ActuaLitt) Situated on Tangier's main boulevard, the Librairie des Colonnes is Morocco's oldest bookstore, and the city's "most important cultural centre over the last 60 years," writes Carrin. It was founded in 1949, by which time a swathe of American and French writers had begun settling in Tangier beginning with American writer and composer Paul Bowles. Visitors to the bookstore (which underwent restoration in 2010) will walk in aisles once haunted by writers, artists and intellectuals including Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, William S Burroughs, Jean Genet, Amin Maalouf, Juan Goytisolo, Marguerite Yourcenar, Bernardo Bertolucci and the Rolling Stones. "It sells fixed-price books in French, English and Spanish, without the option of haggling that is amusing initially but soon becomes trying and wearisome," Carrin writes. Bookshops is out through Hachette. Now that you know where to go, how can you ensure you get a cheap car hire deal no matter where you go?
Here are some tips you can use:
Book early
As with most things, booking ahead can save you some serious cash. If next year’s holiday is booked and your dates are locked down in your diary, why wait to sort the car hire? Do it now while you’re thinking about it and save some money in the process.
Do you really need a luxury vehicle?
When booking a car hire, it can be tempting to take out a high-end vehicle and imagine yourself zooming around picturesque mountain roads in the latest high-performance car. Unfortunately, such vehicles are often more expensive than their rather more run-of-the-mill brothers and sisters.
Ask yourself if you really need something swish. When you’re on a holiday, what probably matters most is space. There should be enough for your stuff and for the people coming with you. Opting for a standard vehicle that suits your needs could be a much more affordable and practical option.
Understand the extras
Some car hire deals look cheap but once you look under the bonnet, they are actually a little more expensive. To avoid getting tricked, make sure you know exactly what your deal will cover before you book.
Get your arrival time right
Give your car rental provider an accurate idea of when you’ll be picking up the car. If your flight is delayed, your reservation could be cancellled, especially if it’s at a busy time. This is annoying but it could also incur additional costs. If you can get in touch with the car hire check-in desk to let them know you’re running late, do so.
Make sure any pre-existing damaged is logged
When you hire a car, you’ll usually get an inspection form before you drive away with it. This form will detail any damage that’s already on the car. If you spot some damage but it’s not on the form, make sure it gets logged immediately. Otherwise, you could end up paying for damage you didn’t cause. And, of course, make sure you take care of the car when you’re exploring the city.
Hiring a car can transform a holiday. Giving you the freedom of the open road, it allows you to get out and explore. Next time you choose a car hire, do your research, follow some top tips and you’ll be well on your way to bagging a great deal that won’t break the bank.

Os 10 melhores escritores de diálogos do audiovisual
New Post has been published on http://baixafilmestorrent.com/cinema/os-10-melhores-escritores-de-dialogos-do-audiovisual/
Na televisão ele criou e escreveu episódios para as séries Sports Night, West Wing: Nos Bastidores do Poder, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip e The Newsroom.

Long Overdue Blog Update
I haven't written or edited a thing for myself in a month. Sort of feels good, but at the same time, I wonder if I'm in one of those downward spirals where my subconscious has given up on writing. (Don't worry, I always go back to it, eventually.)
I started a new job on May 7. That's a big part of why I'm not writing. Between work, commuting, and the gym, I don't have a lot of time left in the day. (And I hate the gym...)
I think another big part of why I'm not writing is the slow uptake on the last two books. LONG EMPTY ROADS did okay, but honestly--AFTER EVERYONE DIED is still selling more copies than LER. And for a two year old book, AED is not exactly burning up the charts. LORD BOBBINS AND THE ROMANIAN RUCKUS is more or less dead in the water. I had hoped for a boost after I did the interview at Airship Ambassador, but it did not help much. TB&TRR has barely sold any eBooks, and it hasn't sold a single hard copy since @TeslaCon ended. It hasn't generated any reviews, and as I've said before: If you don't get to at least 50, that means the book is dead. Right now, LER is at 35.
I should get back to writing and editing soon, though. My new job has summer hours. That means I work M-TH and have Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays off. This Friday, as of now, I'm anticipating revisiting Culver's, sidling into my old regular book, and jamming on the keyboard for a while. Come have a burger with me.
In other worlds, I've partaken of some pop culture, so here's some reviews:
Movies: DEADPOOL 2: Fun, funny, and a worth sequel. Was it as good as the first movie? No. Is it still a good movie? Absolutely. Ryan Reynolds has said they probably won't make a third, but he wants to see Deadpool as the sidekick in someone else's movie. I would any price for a ticket to the Spider-Man/Deadpool crossover. And if they made a Deadpool/Wolverine movie--oh, man...
SOLO: I thought this movie would be stupid when they announced it. It is a pointless movie to make. We know the three most important characters WILL NOT DIE. That really cuts down on the drama aspect. However, they made a fun heist movie that, despite having no real emotional impact, is still worth seeing. Go see a matinee. Pay less cash for the ticket, but still a fun film. I liked it better than ROGUE ONE or THE LAST JEDI.
SUPER TROOPERS 2: Funny. A worth sequel. As good as the first? No. But, I still laughed. Some of the gags were hilarious. And Rob Lowe's Canadian accent is worth the price of admission.
BLOCKERS: I went to see this because I had nothing better to do. I love Leslie Mann, though. And I've always liked Ike Barinholtz. And John Cena seems like a truly good dude. I went to an early show ($6 tickets!) and I had a good time. Is it a great movie? No. Is it funny and clever? Yes. It's a standard teen sex romp film, but taken from the female perspective. It had some fun with some tropes. Cena was great. I liked it far more than I thought I would.
TV: Series Finale of THE MIDDLE: I loved this show. I initially started watching because of my love for SCRUBS and Neil Flynn's Janitor character (Knifewrench! For kids!), but this show really grew on me. I was sad to see it go, but it was a fitting end to a nine-season run. I hear they're going to spin-off Eden Sher's Sue Heck into her own series. I'd watch that. I thought Sue Heck was one of the most original characters I've seen on TV in a while. Her optimism was uncrushable, and the world needs more of that.
Books: AGE OF ASSASSINS by RJ Barker: Just plowed through this novel, the first in the "Wounded Kingdom" trilogy. It was the type of book I love--fantasy, a young hero-in-the-making still in his apprenticeship, and a good, tight, political "find the assassin before he kills the king-to-be" plot. I enjoyed it enough that I jumped on the sequel immediately.
Music: The lead singer of Frightened Rabbit, Chris Hutchison, recently committed suicide. Tragic, tragic end to an amazing singer and songwriter. Depression is real. And it's horrible. I've been dealing with it for most of my life. My buddy, Matthew Eidson, introduced me to FR on his outstanding radio show, Old Dog, New Music (which you can listen to online tomorrow night). He called their sound "Sad Bastard Music"--which is fitting. And I love me some good sad bastard music. Go check out their record "Painting of a Panic Attack." There isn't a bad song on that record. The song "Get Out" is wonderful. And the video is art. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBdsY_zsv_U Rest in peace, Chris. You are gone far too soon.
Podcast: I've been listening to Michael Ian Black's "How to Be Amazing" a lot lately. A lot of really interesting interviews. Black is a good host. He asks pointed, thoughtful questions and sits back to let the guest really talk. I enjoy it a lot.
Anyhow, enough for today. I'm not dead...it just seems like it.
Hope you all are well.
Tell friends to write reviews.
What are you all reading/watching lately?
Best, Sean

Top 10 Cheap European Car Hire Destinations
If you’re planning a European getaway sometime soon, you need to start considering arranging a cheap car hire for your trip. It will give you the freedom to explore, save you time on your trip and you won’t have to worry about your own car being stolen or damaged.
But, as you’ve no doubt discovered, car hires can sometimes prove to be a confusing process. Some cities are more suited to be explored in a car than others and that will depend on what time of the year you are traveling. There are, however, some staple cities across Europe that always offer an enjoyable holiday and hidden gems to discover by car on a budget.
Here are the top ten wallet-friendly European car hire destinations – plus some top tips on saving money while you’re there.
ROME

BARCELONA
Total Cost: £176.26 | Car Hire Cost: £10.86

PISA

MADRID

Three places to go: Enjoy cheap tapas from street vendors, visit the expansive 19th-century park Buen Retiro and take a stroll along the Gran Vía, Madrid’s main thoroughfare.

LISBON
Total Cost: £150.58 | Car Hire Cost: £15.28

MALAGA

Uau!!
