Painting the Paschal Candle
Why paint my own candle?
The thought of painting the Paschal Candle for the Rosary Shrine in London, where I currenly am based, first came to me at the beginning of the year. I wanted to have a candle with the Rosary Shrine coat-of-arms, and I thought at first that I should commission a professional painter to do it; looking at the designs in the religious goods catalogues only convinced me that only a custom-designed candle would satisfy me. However, I knew a few friends who had painted their own, and I enjoyed the idea of coming up with my own design. The only problem was that I hadn’t picked up a brush to paint anything since I left secondary school, almost three decades ago! So, I ordered two Paschal candles so that if I made a mistake with one, I had an alternative candle with a ready made design!
Materials I needed
A little research online, and a few discussions with Facebook friends ascertained that I needed acrylic paints including gold and silver acrylic paints and some wax pens. To these, I would need to add an acrylic paint binder which helps the water-based acrylic paint to bond with the wax surface of the candle. And finally I needed to trace a pattern onto the candle. For this I bought carbon paper and an embossing tool.
Design: Cosmati and the Cosmos
From the outset, I knew I wanted a candle with designs inspired by the artwork of the great Christian basilicas of Rome. I gave some consideration to a design inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels, but thought this was too complex and ambitious. At another point, I thought of an icon of Christ emerging from the tomb and trampling the coronavirus underfoot! But I thought that it unwise for a beginner like me to try any figural work lest my depiction of the Lord become like the ‘Monkey Christ’ of Borja! So, I returned to the medieval designs that have long inspired me: Cosmatesque patterns.
Named after the Cosmati family, Cosmatesque patterns are sometimes called ‘opus alexandrinum’, perhaps because they originated in Alexandria. The geometric designs are certainly of Greek and Byzantine origins, and they’re first seen in the Western Church in the 11th century. According to Leo of Ostia, the abbot of Monte Cassino (the influential abbey founded St Benedict) “sent envoys to Constantinople to hire men who were experts in the art of laying mosaics and pavements”, and thus the transfer of knowledge about these Eastern patterns and designs came to the West. Cosmati work flourished in the 12th and 13th-centuries predominantly in Rome, but examples of Cosmatesque work are found throughout Italy, and even in Westminster Abbey in London. Its ‘Great Pavement’ was installed in 1268 on the sacred site where the monarch is crowned. Indeed, Cosmati work is costly, precious, and thus restricted to the most important of churches, often those associated with royalty or the papacy.
The stones used for laying the mosaic designs are almost always recycled from classical Roman sources, and two precious stones, coloured green and purple, feature in their design. Green porphyry was called Lapis Lacedaemonius by the Romans, and it came from quarries near Sparta in the Greek Peloponnese and was quarried from the Bronze Age until around the 5th century AD. The even rarer purple ‘Imperial Porphyry’, which was reserved to the Roman and Byzantine Emperors, comes from quarries at Mons Porphyrites in the Gebel Dokhan of Egypt’s Eastern Desert, quarried from the 1st century AD until the 5th century. Hence, by the time the Cormati family were active in Italy, green and purple porphyry were antiques that were no longer being quarried. The Cosmati pavements, therefore, accentuate and set off roundels of this legendary stone recycled from Roman spolia.
Cosmati designs generally have two geometric patterns: interlaced circular bands called guilloche, and which are said to represent the Resurrection, perhaps because they form a series of infinity loops; and secondly, the quincunx, which is a central circle surrounded by four circles. The quincunx is an ancient symbol, reminiscent of the Greek cross, which stands for the cosmos or an ordered universe. The Cosmatesque quincunx, moreover, with its triangular mosaics inlaid into the whirling circular pattern stands for the created world. As Galileo wrote: “The book of nature is written in the language of mathematics, and its letters are triangles, circles and other geometrical figures.” Hence, at Westminster Abbey, the Great Pavement uniquely had an inscription around the central quincunx design that referred to it as representing “the eternal pattern of the universe”.
At the centre of the Paschal candle, therefore, I placed a Cosmatesque quincunx, with triangles of green and purple around roundels of green and purple, evocative of imperial porphyry. I looked online for a design that could be easily traced, and printed this out, put the carbon paper on the candle, and then traced over this design with the embossing tool.
At first, I had intended to draw a cross in the central circle, and then, on the other four circles, I wanted to draw the ‘Alpha’ and ‘Omega’, and the year in Arabic numerals: ‘20′ - ‘20′. However, it was only after I had painted the quincunx that I recalled that the five incense grains would have to pierce these five circles, thus obscuring these symbols. So, an alternative solution had to be found! Incidentally, the five incense grains stand for the wounds of Christ, or the nails that pierced his body. I bought these golden pine-cones of wax from Italy, where they’re commonly used to pierce the Paschal candle – rather different from the brass pins we’re accustomed to in England, but they seem to work very well with this candle, and they add to the Romanitas of the design.
It was fitting, then, that this quincunx at the centre of the Paschal candle stand for the Cross of Christ, and for his Five Wounds – an observation made by James Joyce concerning the quincunx symbol. However, the quincunx is a rich symbol: as we’ve seen it also stands for the whole created order, which is now redeemed and transformed by the Risen Christ; or it stands for Christ in majesty surrounded by his four evangelists; or for the four Platonic elements of creation (fire, water, earth, and air) with the fifth element in the centre being aether, the Aristotelian quintessence. This design, therefore, signifies that all of creation is raised up and renewed by Christ rising from the dead; the whole cosmos is subjected to the imperial Christ, and resounds with the joy of his Gospel.
Our Lady’s Rosary and the Paschal Lamb
Having decided on the central cross-shaped quincunx, I knew I needed two more roundels that I wanted to add to lenghten the overall design. At the bottom would go the emblem of the Rosary Shrine, which is the monogram of the Blessed Virgin Mary surrounded by the Rosary.
I needed another emblem that would balance this at the top, and I chose the Lamb of God, a symbol of the Risen Lord. As St Paul says: “Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us” (1 Cor 5:7), and this text is used in the Communion chant of Easter Sunday.
I searched for a medieval design of the Paschal lamb, and found this beautiful example on the ‘Cruz de Bagergue’ that dates from 1200. The Paschal lamb carries a flag featuring a red-cross on a white field, which is traditionally used as an emblem of the Resurrection, but it also conveniently looks like the flag of St George, i.e., the flag of England, which is the land now rededicated as Our Lady’s Dowry!
Alpha & Omega
However, what about the requisite signs on a Paschal candle? we needed a cross, and an Alpha, an Omega, and the numerals for this current calendar year. First, I painted a Greek cross in the central circle of the quincunx, using the alternating black and white Cross of the Dominican Order. But I fashioned it as a Greek cross, and around this I wrote the Greek letters IC XC NIKA. This emblem, called the Greek Christogram, has been in use since the 8th century, and it was found throughout Byzantium, notably on imperial coinage. It is a reference to the victory of Constantine at the Milvian Bridge in 312, and the Greek letters spell out: “Jesus Christ Conquers” i.e. through his Cross. By the 9th-century this emblem was believed to be apotropaic, that is to say, it is believed to have the power to drive away evil.
Continuing to be inspired by Byzantine art, I looked to examples of Crosses which had an Alpha and an Omega, the Greek letters for the Beginning and the End (cf Rev 22:13) hanging from them. The Altar Cross in Westminster Cathedral notably has these letters of the Greek alphabet hanging from its arms, and I researched and found medieval engravings and medallions with the same device. However, in all the old Byzantine images, the Omega was drawn not with the uppercase Ω but rather the lowercase ω. So, on the Paschal candle, I drew two jewelled Greek letters, the uppercase A and the lowercase ω suspended from the Cross-shaped quincunx. Following on from this, it seemed best to put the date above these, but rather than to write the date in Arabic numerals (2020), I opted to stay with the Roman-Byzantine theme, and so I chose the neat Roman numerals (MMXX), inscriped above the horizontal roundels of the quincunx.
Flora and Beasts
Finally, I decided to add a few small elements to the candle so that not everything was centred around the middle portion of the candle. Near the top, I painted some bees, and then I added some to the bottom as well. Why bees? This is again a classical reference: Virgil, too, praised the industry and society of bees, and the Exsultet, which dates to at least the 4th century, says this concerning the Paschal candle:
“On this, your night of grace, O holy Father, accept this candle, a solemn offering, the work of bees and of your servants’ hands, an evening sacrifice of praise, this gift from your most holy Church. But now we know the praises of this pillar, which glowing fire ignites for God’s honour, a fire into many flames divided, yet never dimmed by sharing of its light, for it is fed by melting wax, drawn out by mother bees to build a torch so precious.”
Where there are bees, there ought to be flowers, so I added a few pink flowers, a reference to the cherry blossom (sakura 桜) which appear at this time, and which the Japanese enjoying viewing in the Spring (called hanami 花見), as a meditation on transience and impermanence, and the fleetingness of beauty. The exercise of painting the candle, I realised, is an exercise in detachment and impermanence because I would also come to sit in church, watching the candle burn down over the course of the year, and so consume and destroy that which I had painted. Sic transit gloria mundi!
Finally, I added a skep, the medieval bell-shaped hive made from coiled straw developed by apiculturists, and the hive is dripping with golden honey. It seemed fitting that the bees should have a place to live, and that their hive should be of the kind commonplace in Europe during the time that the Cosmati family engaged in their particular golden industry.
And then, as a little personal indulgence, I added a portrait of my beloved priory cat Felix. First consulting a book of ‘Cats in Medieval Manuscripts’, I adapted an illustration from the ‘Luttrell Psalter’, c.1325-35, and gave the cat the same colouring and pattern as Felix, who has a fine coat that looks like a Dominican habit. Felix has quite a penchant for sweet things – even though he’s not allowed them – and I am sure he’d love some honey, towards which he’s shown extending his paw.
Technique
I wanted to avoid seeing brush stokes in the quincunx, so I learnt to dab my brush rather than just paint it in broad strokes. I realised that I didn’t need a lot of paint - often a pea-sized blob would suffice, with an equal sized blob of the acrylic binder: mix these well, and then, let it dry a little; the less wet the paint, the easier it was to paint on the wax. I learnt that, with acrylics, if one made a mistake, one could easily run over it with a wet brush, and the water washed away the paint like an eraser. As time went on, I rather enjoyed painting the candle, and it took me about 2 hours a day for 5 days, which is far quicker than I had expected.
Final Reflections
As Providence would have it, I began work on the Paschal candle on the Monday of Passiontide. By that time, public Masses had ceased because of the coronavirus pandemic, and then, having more time on my hands, this project became a Godsend because it gave me something to focus on; it took my mind off the worries of the present moment. Painting the candle became an act of love, something beautiful and devotional that I could do for God and for the sacred Liturgy; it became a prayer, and indeed, I would pray as I painted the Rosary, or the Paschal Lamb. Finally, on Easter night, I pierced the quincunx with the wax pine-cones of encased incense, and then I saw it lit and raised high on the Paschal candle stand. And then, I was privileged to be the first to incense the candle, and then, to sing the Exsultet that praised God for it, asking that its
“flame be found still burning by the Morning Star: the one Morning Star who never sets, Christ your Son, who, coming back from death's domain, has shed his peaceful light on humanity, and lives and reigns for ever and ever.”
Amen.

Canelo to PBC? Spence to Top Rank? What if there were trades in boxing?
Apr 22, 2020
Steve KimESPN
Boxing isn’t a league. It is one industry, but it’s fractured and divided due to the different promotional companies. Because of this, many of the sport’s best matchups are either delayed beyond the moment when they’d make the biggest impact or simply go by the wayside.
Promotional rivalries and network alliances are now as entrenched in the sport as 12-round championship fights and three-minute rounds. The promotion that represents a fighter determines their future fight options. Depending on their circumstances and the other fighters under the same banner, they could be right in the mix for big fights or left out looking for a matchup that will provide the profile-raising push that is most desperately needed.
But consider a scenario in which promotional entities in the sport would make trades in the same way they are done in MLB, the NFL and the NBA, where the talent can be acquired for both the benefit of the athletes and the franchise.
With that in mind, here are five fantasy trades between boxing’s major promotional companies — and fantasy is what they are, so take care not to take this too seriously — that would benefit the sport as a whole and those involved.
Vasiliy Lomachenko and Miguel Berchelt (Top Rank) for Errol Spence Jr. (Premier Boxing Champions)Vasiliy Lomachenko, pictured, against Gervonta Davis could be a great fight at lightweight. Richard Heathcote/Getty Images
How will the trade benefit Lomachenko? Lomachenko is a three-division world titleholder who has captured major titles at featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight. During this stretch of time, he has earned acclaim as one of the premier fighters in the sport. The biggest thing that has eluded Lomachenko is that one career-defining victory. Yes, there is talk of a showdown with fellow lightweight titlist Teofimo Lopez Jr., which would certainly count as a significant, high-profile bout, but who knows when that fight will actually come to fruition, if at all, in 2020.
2 Related
By being traded to the PBC, Lomachenko has a “Tank” awaiting him in Gervonta Davis, another blue-chip talent at 135 who has become a legitimate draw and owns a secondary title. By throwing in Berchelt in the deal, the current WBC junior lightweight world titlist, you have another well-known opponent whom the winner of this fight can face down the line.
How will this help Berchelt? For Berchelt, the longest reigning titleholder at 130, and one of the most physically imposing fighters in the sport, this puts him in alignment with fellow titlist Leo Santa Cruz, who currently holds the WBA “super” belt at junior lightweight. A fight between Berchelt and Santa Cruz would be a fun shootout. But the matchup that is really intriguing, and perhaps more enticing to the public at large, would be a bout against Davis, who twice held a title at junior welterweight and is now campaigning as a lightweight. Berchelt-Davis is one of the best pure fights that can be made at 135.
How will the trade benefit Spence? This trade opens the door for Spence to finally face Terence Crawford, the reigning WBO welterweight titleholder. Simply put, a matchup between Spence — who holds the IBF and WBC belts at 147 — and Crawford is one of the best fights to be made in all of boxing.
How do the companies benefit? Both Top Rank and PBC immediately get to make pay-per-view fights that both please boxing fans and succeed at the box office.
Fights we’d like to see: Lomachenko vs. Davis and Spence vs. Crawford.
Canelo Alvarez (Golden Boy Promotions) for Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz (PBC)Lightweight titlist Gervonta Davis is considered a future pay-per-view star. Scott Taetsch/Getty Images
How will Canelo benefit? After Canelo, who currently holds titles at middleweight and super middleweight, signed an incredibly lucrative $350 million deal with DAZN in 2018, for one reason or another things have gone sour between Golden Boy and their star client. It’s clear Canelo wants a change of scenery.
Waiting for Canelo at PBC is Jermall Charlo, the current WBC middleweight titlist. If Canelo decides to settle in at 168, he has a few options in WBC belt-holder David Benavidez and IBF titlist Caleb Plant, who would both be enticing matchups and give Canelo an opportunity to add more quality names to his ledger. Both fights are very marketable, but really, isn’t everything involving Canelo?
How will Davis and Santa Cruz benefit? Both can still fight one another, just on a different platform, and there is fertile ground between 130 and 135 to make various fights.
At Golden Boy, a fight between Santa Cruz and Joseph “JoJo” Diaz would be a very interesting, all-Southern California battle that would do well at the box office. And at 135 — where “Tank” Davis currently resides — there is Ryan Garcia, the 2017 prospect of the year, and a matchup between the two would certainly be a must-see fight. Davis and Garcia have been jawing back and forth on social media the past several months, but due to their current promotional ties, there are significant hurdles that exist. Under this trade, there really are none.
Follow us on Instagram and Twitter to stay up to date with all of our latest boxing news.
How do the companies benefit? For PBC, it’s simple: It gains the services of one of the biggest attractions in the sport. Given its Fox deal, PBC is still very much in the pay-per-view business and now has someone such as Canelo to anchor that platform at least twice a year. As for Golden Boy, it gets a chance to move on from a seemingly unhappy Alvarez and work with one of the brightest young stars in the sport and a longtime champion.
Two fights we’d like to see: Canelo vs. Charlo and Davis vs. “JoJo” Diaz.
Manny Pacquiao (PBC) for Devin Haney and Callum Smith (Matchroom)At 41, welterweight world titleholder Manny Pacquiao can still compete with anybody at 147 pounds. Apu Gomes/Getty Images
How will Pacquiao benefit? While most of the marquee welterweights are under the PBC umbrella, it’s clear Pacquiao and his management are looking for the biggest money fight possible — and that might mean going to the Middle East, where Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn now does business. Money talks, and if the price is right, Hearn will be able to entice a well-known dance partner to Saudi Arabia.
Mikey Garcia, who is now with Matchroom, has yearned for a fight against Pacquiao and he is a well-known figure to most boxing fans. A dark-horse candidate would be Regis Prograis, a top junior welterweight. Prograis, while not technically a Matchroom fighter, was scheduled to face Maurice Hooker on a DAZN card on April 17. Promoted by DiBella Entertainment, he’s the type of boxer who has the flexibility to make a deal for such a fight, and Hearn has shown a willingness to reach across the aisle and make fights with rival promoters.
Monday through Friday, host Mina Kimes brings you an inside look at the most interesting stories at ESPN, as told by the top reporters and insiders on the planet. Listen
How will Haney and Smith benefit? Haney is one of the best young natural talents in the sport, and at just 21, his future is bright. Right now, he is having problems enticing the other lightweight belt-holders to face him, but eventually, he’ll move up in weight. His career could very well get the same type of push Spence and Davis got from PBC. As for Smith, the WBA “super” champion at 168, his career has stalled since winning the World Boxing Super Series in 2018. This is a chance for him to get in the ring with the other super middleweight belt-holders Benavidez and Plant.
How do the companies benefit? PBC gets younger. For as iconic as Pacquiao is, 41 is 41. At a certain point, you always look to get younger with your roster, don’t you? Pacquiao is not the pay-per-view draw he once was, but it’s all relative. He matchups very well with everyone else currently in the division. The reality is that he is still one of the biggest attractions in the sport. When Pacquiao performs, it transcends boxing because of his global popularity, and it’s very much an international event.
Two fights we’d like to see: Pacquiao vs. Garcia and Smith vs. Benavidez
Three-way trade: Terence Crawford (Top Rank) to PBC, David Benavidez (PBC) to Golden Boy and Vergil Ortiz and Alexis Rocha (Golden Boy) to Top RankWelterweight titleholder Terence Crawford, pictured, needs a signature fight against the best fighters in the division such as Manny Pacquiao and Errol Spence Jr. Bradley Kanaris/Getty Images
How will Crawford benefit? Crawford is atop many pound-for-pound lists, but the fights the public yearns for have eluded him at welterweight since he won the WBO title from Jeff Horn in 2018. Good competition against PBC fighters such as Pacquiao, Spence and Porter would be must-see fights in the welterweight division.
How will Benavidez benefit? There will come a time when Canelo will settle in as a full-time super middleweight, and by being with Golden Boy, it makes this particular bout against Canelo much easier to put together. It’s a fight that looks to be a can’t-miss given the overall skills and star power of Alvarez and the offensive firepower of Benavidez.
How will Ortiz and Rocha benefit? In Ortiz, you have one of the most highly regarded American prospects. Ortiz has 15 fights (with 15 stoppages) to his credit, and he’s just 22 years old. He is a future star and now gets to be showcased on ESPN. Rocha is another solid young boxer and a possible foe for Ortiz in the future.
How do the companies benefit? Everyone involved here fills a specific hole. Some will benefit immediately, while others look toward the future. PBC gets a key piece on the welterweight chessboard with Crawford, who can be matched right off the bat with their other top 147 pounders. Golden Boy gets a current world titleholder at super middleweight and a natural opponent for Canelo. If Benavidez continues to develop his skills, a fight with Canelo is exactly the type of event that should be headlining on Cinco De Mayo weekend. In Ortiz and Rocha, Top Rank gets two young exciting fighters with a very high ceiling.
Two fights we’d want to see: Crawford vs. Spence and Canelo vs. Benavidez.
Jermall Charlo (PBC) for Mikey Garcia (Matchroom)Middleweight world titleholder Jermall Charlo is one of the best fighters in the division. Emilee Chinn/Getty Images
How will Charlo benefit? Despite having the WBC title, Charlo is on the outside looking in at middleweight, because the other belt-holders are under different promotional banners that have content deals with DAZN. In certain respects, what Crawford is to welterweight, Charlo is to middleweight.
But with this trade, Charlo could face Canelo at 160 or 168, Gennadiy Golovkin, Jaime Munguia or finally settle a long-standing grudge match against WBO middleweight belt-holder Demetrius Andrade. All of these names fight on DAZN.
How will Garcia benefit? For better or worse, Garcia insists he will stay at welterweight even though he has acknowledged he might be more effective at 140. So why not have him back at PBC, where he had a productive run between 2016 and 2019? During that stretch, Garcia captured a lightweight and a junior welterweight title. There’s an abundance of fights to make for him at 147, including a rematch with Spence, who blanked him last year. Some will groan, but Garcia has stated that he wants another crack at him. Beyond Spence, fights against Danny Garcia, Keith Thurman and Pacquiao would be available and easy to make.
How do the companies benefit? PBC gets another key addition at 147 in Garcia, a Mexican-American boxer who has become a solid attraction in both California and Texas. As for Matchroom/DAZN, they pick up the services of the fiery Charlo, who brings another dangerous element to their middleweight stable of Canelo, GGG and Andrade.
Two fights we want to see: Garcia vs. Thurman and Golovkin vs. Charlo.

Friday, March 2nd, 2018 – Fozzy Brings the Judas Rising Tour to Dallas for an Electrifying Show at Canton Hall
Photos by Jordan Buford Photography At long last, Fozzy was making their return to Dallas. Granted, they had been in town in the spring of 2017, but that was to partake in a festival. It had been some time since the rock outfit comprised of Chris Jericho, Rich Ward, Frank Fontsere, Billy Grey and Paul Di Leo had delivered a substantial set to their North Texas fanbase, though. The current leg of the Judas Rising Tour was going to change that. Best of all, their show on this particular Friday night was just the third of the current leg of this tour, meaning the musicians were sure to be teeming with even more excitement than usual as they returned to the environment where they thrive. This visit to Dallas had Fozzy gracing one of the newest venues in the area: Canton Hall. Resurrected by the forces that brought back and own Trees and The Bomb Factory, Canton Hall is a nice in-between of both venues. A decent bit larger than the iconic Trees, Canton Hall still possesses that gritty, grimy feel that is essential to that club vibe. And while a fraction of the size of The Bomb Factory, this newest spot also has some of the elegance that can be found there, the end result being a place that is refined but casual, still feeling quite intimate despite its size. And as expected, the sound and lighting were topnotch. After opening in late 2017, Canton Hall is still getting broken in, though there is no doubt it’s already in tiptop shape. The venue certainly made an impression on me during my first trip there, and it’s sure to become one of the best spots to see a show in D-FW. The support bands joining the Judas Rising Tour were Dark Sky Choir, Santa Cruz and Through Fire, each band putting on a fantastic show, the next somehow managing to outdo the act that had preceded them as they continued warming up the stage for the act of the night. When that moment finally rolled around, Canton Hall was quite lively, the loyal Fozzy fans turning out in droves. They had been waiting for this and were ecstatic that the moment had finally arrived. Many were already decked out in Judas Rising Tour t-shirts, while others sported some older shirt designs; several other attendees clutching a vinyl copy of Judas that they had picked up at the merch table. The mood was intense as they patiently waited for the band they so loved to take the stage, the concertgoers clearly ready to let loose and enjoy the no-frills, no-holds-barred rock show that was coming.
That happened at 10:24, the quintet storming the stage as Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” played over the PA system. If the air wasn’t electric before it certainly was then; the band kicking off their 70-minute long set with the title track from this seventh studio album of theirs: “Judas”. In all, they would wind up playing about half of the material from that record, and the response that fans had to it was quite something. Music fans (regardless of what band it might be) can be a fickle bunch, typically preferring the familiar over the new. Typically, but not in this instance. As Jericho stood atop a riser placed at the edge of the stage, ensuring everyone in the venue had a perfect view of him, the fans sang and even shouted the lyrics right along with him. Their enthusiasm regarding this new music from an album that wasn’t even quite five-months old was startling yet refreshing. It wasn’t restricted to just the singles, either.
An exhilarating start, they further immersed everyone in the raw, high-energy rock show with the subsequent track from Judas, "Drinkin with Jesus". None of them appeared to need any time to warm up, somehow having found their stride as soon as they stepped out underneath the stage lights. They did, however, begin to push their limits, growing even more kinetic. Even being downright explosive. Those two songs alone were built for the live setting, the heavy beat Fontsere laid down during "Drinkin with Jesus" designed to invigorate the listener. The riffs that Ward and Grey cranked out were incredibly dynamic; the musicians also clearly having fun as they threw down. At one point Di Leo and Grey stood facing one another as they jammed for a few moments, the two of them and Ward constantly on the move, frequently interacting with one another.
“FOZZY! FOZZY! FOZZY!” the fans began to chant afterwards. With a solid pairing of new songs out of the way, the members of Fozzy ventured back to some of their previous work. That would include the title track from their 2012 release, "Sin and Bones", which concluded with Jericho repeatedly pointing at as many individuals as he could, mouthing “thank you” to the adoring crowd before leaping back off the riser. The musicians’ actions were all centered around the fans. They were all about making this as engrossing an experience as possible for them. That included letting them know how appreciated their support was; their actions being commanding, while still keeping the tone slightly loose and carefree, which was further conducive of the mood of people just enjoying themselves and having a good time while indulging in some stellar music.
Upon finishing that track Jericho addressed the spectators, stressing how great it was to be back in Dallas. He mentioned that last show, saying it was fun and they enjoyed getting to play for their fans, the only drawback being that they had a quick 30-minute set that day. “We’re just getting warmed up after thirty-minutes, RIGHT?!?” he shouted, seemingly not just speaking for he and his band mates, but also their throng of supporters, whom he sought confirmation from. The roaring fanfare they received seemed to echo that sentiment. And if that was the case (as it sure seemed to be), then they had just barely begun to scratch the surface of what they were capable of. Arguably Fozzy’s strongest release to date, they continued to demonstrate the might of Judas with a couple more cuts from it, "Burn Me Out" standing out as a fan favorite and one of their most aggressive numbers of the night. However, one of the most celebrated moments of the night came during another staple song. It was nearly pitch black in the venue, with the exception of a few flashing red lights scattered about the amps and equipment on stage. The band had disappeared from sight; the eerie rendition of The Itsy-Bitsy Spider that was heard over the PA telling everyone what was coming. However, what no one was anticipating was Jericho returning wearing his signature lighted jacket.
The cheers were deafening as the multitude of lights suddenly came into view; the singer spinning around some before they got back to the business of putting on a topnotch concert experience with "Spider in My Mouth". The execution of the performance had a straightforward flow about it as they made certain the music and the show were the primary points of focus. However, they weren’t afraid to mix in some humor as well.
A hearty laugh came before their lone cover of the night, Jericho mentioning that usually they go right into it, reminding everyone that this was a live show and sometimes at shows things happen. In this case one of his shoe laces had come undone. “…They taught me well…” he claimed, assuring everyone he did, in fact, know how to tie his own shoe; and with a drumroll courtesy of Fontsere, he proceeded to do just that. As if that wasn’t hilarious enough, once completed he balanced on one leg, proudly showing off his work, the crowd chuckling and applauding even louder.
Audience participation was highly encouraged during some of their final numbers, from clapping along to the steamy and hard-hitting "Lights Go Out" to Jericho pointing the microphone – stand and all – at the crowd, they were doing everything imaginable to get the patrons as pumped up as possible. "Enemy" certainly did that, particularly when Ward took center stage for a quick clinic. He wailed on his axe, delivering a solo that was nothing short of amazing, his prowess and passion seeping out as his moves progressively grew more intricate. After ducking out, Jericho returned once Ward was finished, promptly shouting the guitarists name, soon introducing Grey, Di Leo and Fontsere as well. “And I’m J. R. Ewing,” Jericho finished. “You know, since we’re in Dallas,” he added, referring to the show from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Some were either too young or just unaware, the joke going over their head, but for those who got it, it was pretty funny.
A refreshing aspect to Fozzy’s show was how they decided to forgo the traditional encore process. As Jericho mentioned, everyone there knew they would do more, so why not just stay out there for it. He did request everyone pretend that they had disappeared, though, fanfare being the only way to bring the five of them back out. He covered his head with a towel, slowly lifting it before putting it back down, ultimately yanking it off once the shouts and cheers reached a fevered pitch.
With that, they ripped into the closer for the night, "Sandpaper" bringing the show to a pulse-pounding finish. Jericho, Ward, Fontsere, Grey and Di Leo continued to showcase their cohesiveness as a unit and their impeccable chops as performers right up until the final note and even beyond. Standing arms around one another, the five of them graciously took a bow, thankful to everyone that had shown up this night, bidding them farewell until the next time. Their set was nicely curated. Not just in regards to the amount of new material spliced in with the beloved songs fans were hoping for, but the simple structuring of it and the flow that resulted. They came out swinging and only amped things up from there, each song further fueling the rush of adrenaline the music sparked. They were unrelenting when it came to delivering the rock, focusing exclusively on their most vigorous numbers. The ones that have that anthem-esque quality to them, being designed to excite.
It was certainly conducive of the type of performance they gave, the five of them going all on, putting their heart and soul into every last movement, all making certain that they left it all on the stage this night. They made that look pretty effortless; Jericho, Ward, Fontsere, Grey and Di Leo instantly striking up a rapport with the crowd, wanting and striving to not just deliver the show that fans expected, but exceed it. The more that fans sang along and cheered their efforts, the harder the musicians played and performed, creating a cycle as each continuously pushed the other to be the best they could possibly be. The most attentive and supportive audience, watching the most thorough and dedicated group pf performers. And as Fozzy churned out one song after another in their stupendous mix of styles that blends classic rock, hard rock and metal, it was evident that you would be hard pressed to find a more solid collection of musicians.
Their showmanship as individuals and a collective is off the charts, which further aids in them being such a high caliber act. Sure, one might expect that from Jericho thanks to his career in the ring, and while that surely doesn’t hurt, that’s not the extent of it, either. A commanding and authoritative frontman with a stellar set of pipes, he does know exactly how to best work the crowd, egging the patrons on at just the right moments in order to maximize excitement, but it doesn’t stop there. Ward, Grey and Di Leo have a certain degree of glitz to their performance styles, but with the mastery over the guitar and bass to back it up, their talents being the primary thing on display. That makes them each highly compelling figures in their own right, the sheer delight they clearly get out of sharing the stage with one another making them even more transfixing; and rounded out by the devastating force that Fontsere is behind the kit, it makes Fozzy a force to be reckoned with.
There was certainly no denying them this night. Judas has pushed the band to a new level, the songs on that record being some of their strongest yet, and that has positively affected every other aspect of Fozzy’s career. Now having been pushed to new heights as musicians, the older favorites and classics sounded bolder than ever. Not different, though new life had been breathed into them, allowing the band to keep everything somewhat fresh. I had caught Fozzy once before this, a little over three years prior to this Dallas show. They made a lasting impression then, and somehow, they’ve now managed to outdo themselves. Their show on this night was one for the ages. They have made certain that they’ve pushed themselves into new territory, making things bigger and bolder than ever before. The performance felt even more professional, yet it didn’t sacrifice the pure rock ‘n’ roll mentality of being in-your-face as they kept it as raw as possible.
The point is while you may have seen Fozzy, you haven’t seen them like this. The Judas Rising Tour has elevated them to a new level, and now more than ever they epitomize what a well-oiled machine is. If they’re coming to a town near you, you need to go see them because they’ll deliver an experience you won’t forget. Fozzy will be on the road in the U.S. on and off through April 8th. This run includes visits to the House of Blues in San Diego, CA on March 9th; the legendary Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, CA on March 10th; and the Gramercy Theatre in New York, NY on April 5th. For a complete list of Fozzy’s tour schedule and further details on each show, go HERE. And if you don’t have it already, be sure to check out Judas in iTUNES or GOOGLE PLAY. Set List: 1) “Judas” 2) "Drinkin’ with Jesus" 3) "One Crazed Anarchist" 4) "Sin and Bones" 5) "Burn Me Out" 6) "Weight of My World" 7) "Spider in My Mouth" 8) "Do You Wanna Start a War" 9) "SOS" (ABBA cover) 10) "Lights Go Out" 11) "Painless" 12) "Enemy" 13) "Bad Tattoo" 14) "Sandpaper"

The Uber Oscars
Every year the Oscars hand out an award for Best Actor. But since they also hand out awards for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress they still leave the most fundamental question unsettled: who gave the year’s best acting performance.
Well (now that the dust has finally settled form this year’s crazy Oscars) I’m here to retroactively answer that question for every year dating back to 1990. Welcome to the Uber Oscars!
2016 Casey Affleck Emma Stone Mahershala Ali Viola Davis
If Viola Davis had competed in Best Actress, like she should have, she would have won it easily. I’m starting this exercise with a gimme putt.
2015 Leonardo DiCaprio Brie Larson Mark Rylance Alicia Vikander
Time changes how art is perceived, and this feels too recent to really have a clear perspective on it. I would wager that 5-10 years from now Brie Larson’s work will be considered the best of the bunch, but Leo so thoroughly dominated last year’s award season and his win loomed so large in the popular consciousness I gotta give him the nod here for now.
2014 Eddie Redmayne Julianne Moore JK Simmons Patricia Arquette
I remember being blown away by Julianne Moore in Still Alice, but the movie came out only three years ago and yet I barely remember a single thing about it. JK Simmons’ performance in Whiplash on the other hand, was instantly iconic to everyone who saw it and will define his entire career. So, sorry Julianne, but you’re lagging every so slightly.
2013 Matthew McConaughey Cate Blanchett Jared Leto Lupita Nyong’o
Screw your McConaisssance, this is Cate Blanchett all the way. Leo should have beaten McConaughey anyway, and then we could have had a real debate. Great year though overall.
2012 Daniel Day-Lewis Jennifer Lawrence Christoph Waltz Anne Hathaway
Another great year. Anne Hathaway is now officially underrated and Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most memorable winners of recent years. But one of my rules in life is that in an acting-related contest between anyone and Daniel Day-Lewis, the winner is always Daniel Day-Lewis.
2011 Jean Dujardin Meryl Streep Christopher Plummer Octavia Spencer
Uh, well someone has to win, so using the Daniel Day-Lewis Rules, this one goes to Meryl Streep, I guess? Says a lot about the 2012 Oscars that one of the hardest trivia questions in the world is “who won Best Actor six years ago”.
2010 Colin Firth Natalie Portman Christian Bale Melissa Leo
At the time it was probably Christian Bale. Now it’s probably Natalie Portman. But it’s close.
2009 Jeff Bridges Sandra Bullock Christoph Waltz Mo’Nique
I might be biased here, but I think Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds is an all-timer. If you wanted to talk me into Mo’Nique though I’d be willing to listen.
2008 Sean Penn Kate Winslet Heath Ledger Penelope Cruz
REALLY strong year. Any of the other three could have won most years. But Heath Ledger’s Joker is arguable the single best performance of the 2000s. It’s certainly the most iconic.
2007 Daniel Day-Lewis Marion Cotillard Javier Bardem Tilda Swinton
If Heath Ledger’s Joker isn't the best acting performance of the 2000s then Daniel Day-Lewis’s Daniel Plainview IS. So, sorry Javier Bardem, but you're gonna have to settle for being the strongest Uber-Oscars runner-up of them all. And Tilda Swinton, any day now feel free to give Cate Blanchett the Oscar you stole from her.
2006 Forrest Whitaker Helen Mirren Alan Arkin Jennifer Hudson
As much as I want to try and argue that it’s Jennifer Hudson, I think it’s pretty clearly actually Helen Mirren.
While we’re here, 2006 Best Supporting Actor is on the shortlist for weakest Oscar acting category of all time.
2005 Phillip Seymour Hoffman Reese Witherspoon George Clooney Rachel Weisz
Fun fact: Even George Clooney can’t totally remember what movie he won an Oscar for. Anyway, this was the easiest call on the whole board. Not so fun fact: this was the Crash year.
2004 Jamie Foxx Hillary Swank Morgan Freeman Cate Blanchett
Oh god…is it Jamie Foxx for Ray? It’s Jamie Foxx for Ray isn't it? UGH. I hate this game; why did I make it up?
2003 Sean Penn Charlize Theron Tim Robbins Renee Zellwegger
Why does it feel like Charlize Theron’s performance in Monster doesn't get its proper due? It’s profoundly great work and should be talked about way more. Is this how think pieces get started?
2002 Adrien Brody Nicole Kidman Chris Cooper Catherine Zeta-Jones
Can I pick none of the above?
2001 Denzel Washington Hallie Berry Jim Broadbent Jennifer Connelly
If you want to really get me talking, ask me about how Art Carney’s 1972 win for Harry and Tonto led to Denzel beating Russell Crowe out for this Oscar. I’m fun at parties.
2000 Russell Crowe Julia Roberts Benicio del Toro Marcia Gay Harden
If Kate Hudson hadn't been upset by Marcia Gay Harden I would have given this one to her. But you have to actually get the Oscar to be eligible for an Uber Oscar.
1999 Kevin Spacey Hilary Swank Michael Caine Angelina Jolie
Full disclosure: I’ve somehow actually never seen Boys Don't Cry. But Angelina Jolie is not only incredible in Girl Interrupted, it’s the performance that made her into a superstar. It’s impossible to overstate how famous Angelina Jolie was overnight in the wake of this Oscar win. That counts for something.
1998 Roberto Benigni Gwyneth Paltrow James Coburn Judy Dench
I’m a big Shakespeare in Love fan and defender and even I refuse to give this to Gwyneth Paltrow. Also, the only thing that has aged worse than Roberto Benigni’s win is this poster: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/71st_Academy_Awards#/media/File:71st_Academy_Awards_poster.jpg
1997 Jack Nicholson Helen Hunt Robin Williams Kim Basinger
Would you like for me to quote the entirety of Good Will Hunting for you? Because I can. Have I mentioned yet that I’m fun at parties?
1996 Geoffrey Rush Francis McDormand Cuba Gooding Jr Juliette Binoche
This basically comes down to what you value more in a performance: craft or charisma. Although craft seems like the obvious answer, in this case Cuba Gooding Jr. basically invented an entirely new character archetype through sheer force of personality. So let’s call it a tie for now.
1995 Nicholas Cage Susan Sarandon Kevin Spacey Mira Sorvino
Yes that’s right kids, Nicholas Cage not only has a Best Actor Oscar but he’s actually one of the most deserving Oscars winners of the 1990s. The 90s were a weird time.
Speaking of which, here are actors who won Oscars at this Oscar ceremony for things other than acting: Mel Gibson, Emma Thompson and Christine Lahti. As I said, the 90s were weird.
1994 Tom Hanks Jessica Lange Martin Landau Dianne Wiest
Here’s the thing, this should be Martin Landau. He's incredible in Ed Wood. It’s one of the best supporting actor performances of all time and definitely one of the best overall performances of the decade. 1994 Best Supporting Actor is one of the strongest categories ever and he won it easily. But that said, no one is beating Tom Hanks for Forrest Gump. Is it great acting? I genuinely don’t know. But off the top of your head name 10 performances in the history of film that are definitely more iconic than Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump. I’m not saying I feel great about it, but for better or worse, right or wrong, this completely meaningless made-up award is his.
1993 Tom Hanks Holly Hunter Tommy Lee Jones Anna Paquin
Holly Hunter winning acting awards is so 90s. And I hear your arguments for Tom Hanks in Philadelphia, but so much of the esteem for that performance came from “straight man plays gay and has bravery to depict AIDS”. Nothing against Tom Hanks and the great work he does, but you don’t brownie points for that in 2017. Plus, although people sleep on it now, The Piano is actually STRAIGHT FIRE, SON!
1992 Al Pacino Emma Thompson Gene Hackman Marissa Tomei
I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to give this to Marissa Tomei. But I recognize that it actually belongs to Emma Thompson. However it definitely DOES NOT belong to Al Pacino. Scent of a Woman wasn't even his best Oscar nominated performance of 1992.
1991 Anthony Hopkins Jodie Foster Mercedes Ruehl Jack Palance
Hey, remember a few seconds ago when I asked if you came name a more iconic acting perforce than Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump? Well here’s your answer. This probably the Uber Oscar winner of the whole decade.
On an unrelated note, I kinda miss the days when people like Jack Palance, Marissa Tomei, and Dianne Wiest could win Oscars for comedic roles. #MakeOscarsGreatAgain
1990 Jeremy Irons Kathy Bates Whoopi Goldberg Joe Pesci
If Anthony Hopkins isn't the overall Uber Oscar winner for the 1990s then Joe Pesci is. In fact I extended this meaningless exercise all the way to 1990 just to include him. And now that I’ve reminded you of the greatness of Joe Pesci in Goodfellas we can finally draw this to a close. Congrats to all the fake winners on your fake awards!
