Born in Samara in the southeast of European Russia, she was raised in a creative atmosphere by her mother, a visual artist. Her education at the Art Academy and the School for Photography of Michael Musorin in Samara gave her the tools to visualize her ideas. Exhibitions of her sublime, mystic self-portraits ensued in Moscow and Paris. Katerina Belkina was nominated for the prestigious Kandinsky Prize (comparable to the British Turner Prize) in Moscow in 2007. In addition, she won the International Lucas Cranach Award 2015 and the prestigious Hasselblad Masters Prize in 2016. In her works, the Russian artist uniquely combines forms of visual art with digital image processing. The focus of her motifs is predominantly the woman, embedded in situations inspired by her childhood, environment, and experiences. Her works are allusions to masterpieces of the Renaissance or Modernism. It was really interesting questions and I hope you will enjoy to read! “At the same time, I was aware that Grimm's tales are the last thing that will be interesting for the sophisticated viewer of contemporary art in Europe, and even more so on other continents. But I am stubborn and decided that let it be a challenge, to connect the times of enlightenment and earlier, with our days. The atmosphere of the local nature became as this bridge and probably it turned stylistically this project towards romanticism.
